On behalf of the BMX New Zealand Board I would like to welcome all members of the BMX Community, both competitors and supporting families, to the 2022 BMXNZ North Island Titles which are being hosted by the Central Region, and held here at the Taupō BMX Club track.
Twenty years ago, in 2002 and also seven years ago in 2015, we were also here for the BMXNZ North Island Titles, so it is fantastic that Taupō BMX was chosen again as the host!
At close of entries we had 568 riders. This is down from the last time Taupō hosted norths, but is in line with what the world and of course, New Zealand and Australia has had to deal with over the last couple of years.
It is fantastic that this is also the return of the New Zealand leg of the Mighty 11 trans-tansman racing which has been suspended since 2019. BMXNZ welcomes our cousins from Australia and I wish our girls and boys the best of luck as they battle with them.
In preparing for these events there is much work that goes on behind the scenes (which to a lot of people goes largely unnoticed) and for this our acknowledgement and appreciation is extended to the Taupō BMX Club and Central Region BMX.
To all the volunteers, and to those officials who are responsible for looking after the different departments, without your support these events simply wouldn’t happen so a big thank you goes out to you. Our sport should be very proud in the strength and ability of our very talented and well qualified volunteers and officials who staff these events making them run smoothly.
To all competitors, I hope that at these Norths, you achieve to your expectations, whether it is a North Island Title, making the podium or reaching the final, ride hard, ride fair and particularly enjoy the experience.
Finally at the conclusion of these North Island Titles, I wish you all a safe return journey to your homes and families.
All the very best and cheers
Warren Boggiss BMX New Zealand Chairman
It’s my pleasure to extend a warm welcome to riders, supporters, officials and coaches visiting our district for the BMX New Zealand North Island Titles being held at the Taupō BMX Club on 22 and 23 October 2022.

We are thrilled to welcome competitors from the North and South of the country, and those riders who are visiting from Australia.
A massive thanks to all the event organisers, officials and coaches that have made this weekend possible.
I hope that you will take the opportunity to enjoy some of our local attractions when you’re off the track.
We have world-class trails to explore, trout fishing charters on Lake Taupō, geothermal hot pools for tired muscles, and lots of delicious eateries!
lf you want some inspiration for things to do, look at www.lovetaupo.com
Best wishes for what I’m sure will be an enjoyable and successful event.
David Trewavas JP Mayor
We are honored and privileged to host the BMX community for the 2022 BMXNZ North Island Title’s this Labour Weekend.
I would like to start by acknowledging those Club’s that have had to recently run major events under trying restrictions and thank you for continuing to deliver great events all things considered, the Taupō BMX Club hopes it can do you proud by running a world class event free of restrictions for this North Island Title’s.
Our committed members of both our Club committee and North’s subcommittee have been working tirelessly in the background since the announcement was made that we were to successfully host the 2022 BMXNZ North Island Title’s and I would personally like to thank those that have sacrificed hours and hours away from family and friends and their own time and leisure, without your commitment this event would not be possible and be able to be delivered to the high standard that it will be.
We would like to also extend a huge thank you to the Taupō District Council for your continued support of the Taupō BMX Club and in particular your assistance and support to run this event, it has allowed us to run a world class event and showcase the beautiful Taupō district and surrounding areas to the entire BMX community and their friends and supporters.
A huge thank you must go out to all of the businesses large and small that have supported this event financially we can’t thank you enough, for it would simply not be possible to make this event run successfully otherwise.
To the Mighty 11 teams from both New Zealand and Australia, a special welcome to you and your supporters. You play a special part in this event and we wish you all the best with racing and trust you will make memories that last a lifetime. We also extend a warm welcome to the Australian Mighty 11 teams and their officials, family and supporters. We hope you thoroughly enjoy your time here in Taupō and take advantage of all our beautiful town and surrounds has to offer.
If there is anything the Taupō BMX Club can do to help while you’re here please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Finally thank you to YOU, the attendees and riders at this event, welcome to our beautiful district, it is our wish you make the most of your time here and enjoy all our area has to offer. Whatever your goal may be, whether it’s to make it out of moto’s, to make a final or to be standing on a podium may all your goals and dreams be attained.
Race hard, race fair and continue to make the sport of BMX what it is.

The Mighty 11’s is an international BMX competition. It started as a competition run by the Ipswich Club in Brisbane, Australia and BMXNZ.
Some 30 years ago, a rider in the Ipswich club was killed in a car accident. His mother gave the Ipswich club a trophy in his memory. The committee discussed just what to do with the trophy. It was decided to hold an invitation meeting for a junior class. The young child that was killed was eleven years old. The committee members discussed their options and formulated guidelines for the special event. However, when the date was discussed one committee member was reported to have said, 'It can't be in June, my son will miss out as he is twelve". So, 3 ages were put in a hat and one was drawn out. Thus was the birth of the Mighty Elevens.
A friendship between New Zealand's Errol Nelson and Neville Gray, the President of the Ipswich club, and their vision was key to beginning this tradition, which is now at the forefront of the Trans Tasman BMX exchange. Their vision was for cultural exchange visits along with the BMX racing, which they truly loved. The exchange was therefore timed to enable Trans Tasman competition for the Mighty Eleven title. It was a real cultural exchange in the early days. The riders were billeted with families in Australia. No parents were involved in anything other than meeting their children at the track during racing.
Every June Queens Birthday weekend and October Labour weekend riders who are eleven on the first day of June and the 20th of October respectively, from all over Australia and New Zealand are invited to compete against each other to establish the "mighty eleven" for that year. (Age on the day special class).
