Back in 2002 Australian Simon “Woody” Wood devised a way of getting hold of sneakers for free. Two weeks later the first issue of Sneaker Freaker magazine appeared, and it soon became the bible for all the world’s Sneakerheads, faithful followers of the gymnastics shoe cult. From its origins as a punk fanzine to the latest, ultra-stylish glossies and online editions, the mag has documented every limited edition, every unique model, all the collaborations and vintage re-editions created in recent years. Now Taschen is celebrating this fashion institution with a photographic collection called The Ultimate Sneaker Book, the most detailed, complete encyclopaedia on the uncontested queen of the modern age – the sneaker. Woody’s original idea was that Sneaker Freaker would be “fun and serious, meaningful and useless at the same time”, and this is confirmed by The Ultimate Sneaker Book, packed with irreverent observations, crazy details and minutiae that reflect an almost obsessive love of its subject.
