Ancient philosophers believed that celestial bodies were made of a fifth element, the quinta essentia, a Latin phrase meaning ‘fifth essence’, as they thought the Earth was made of four elements, air, fire, water and earth. Alchemists tried to combine these to find the fifth essence of life that permeates all nature. Ibiza is the place to find the quintessence of things, where the magnetism of nature merges with the sophistication of contemporary life.

Inspired by Ibiza’s unique spirit, we dedicate the first issue of 2019 to the quintessence of things and to those who are always searching for the quinta essentia. BMI:MAG’s pages present a visual feast of creative imagery where art plays a big part - fine art photographer and haute couture visionary Cathleen Naundorf graces our cover and pages with her quintessentially mesmerising shots.

This summer Blue Marlin Ibiza is off to a flying start as the ultimate entertainment concept, capturing the fifth element formula with musical innovation, promising a line-up of high-calibre DJs, carefully selected from the global electronic music scene. Blue Marlin Ibiza will take the audience to the cutting edge of musical revolution and entertainment.

Los antiguos filósofos pensaban que la Tierra estaba compuesta por cuatro elementos (aire, fuego, agua y tierra) y que los cuerpos celestes tenían un quinto elemento, la quinta essentia, que en latín significa “quinta esencia”. Los alquimistas trataron de combinar los cuatro elementos para poder descubrir la quinta esencia de la vida que permea toda la naturaleza. Ibiza es el lugar donde encontrar la quintaesencia de las cosas, donde el magnetismo de la naturaleza se funde con la sofisticación de la vida moderna.

Inspirados por el espíritu único de Ibiza, dedicamos este primer número de 2019 a la quintaesencia de las cosas y a aquellos que están siempre en la búsqueda de la quinta essentia. I have always been excited about finding amazing new records and building them into a set to play to people. That has been a constant throughout my career. Music discovery and sharing.

Really simple. For certain shows I’ll also get inspiration from scene and setting. Sometimes I think about the nature of the room and the sound system and what country or crowd I’m playing to. Time of day is important too. I’m going to play differently at 5am in an underground partyfrom at 8 pm at a festival or after sunset on the beach in Ibiza at Blue Marlin Ibiza.

¿De dónde sacas la inspiración para preparar tu set de DJ? Siempre me emociona encontrar discos nuevos y alucinantes y convertirlos en un set con el que actuar ante el público. Esa ha sido una constante durante mi carrera. Descubrir música y compartirla. Es así de sencillo. Para ciertos shows también me inspiro en el escenario y el montaje. A veces pienso en cómo es la sala, el sistema de sonido y en qué país o para qué tipo de gente estoy actuando. La hora es importante también. No actúo de la misma manera a las 5 de la mañana en una fiesta underground que en un festival a las 8 de la noche o tras la puesta de sol en la playa del Blue Marlin Ibiza.

This season, bows are set to rule as the pret tiest fashion embellishment. In and out of fashion for centuries, bows have shown they are a timeless shape in both fashion and jeweller y. Menswear’s leading talents have once again set the tone for the new season’s collections. As usual, sportswear added some serious steez to the SS19 sartorial agenda, with all-white ensembles championing a full tonal look come summer. Sportswear is about to go offbeat, combining high design and tech materials for all-season outerwear. The result is metallic anoraks, flyaway coats, loose voluminous parkas and over-layered trenches in the mix. Deconstructed tailoring, padded-up details and asymmetrical cuts are in rigorous stone colours, soft grey, off-white, contrasting black and white for a monochrome effect. There’s a move towards chill-out tailoring worn loose and soft on the skin. Streetwear and sportswear have been the main buzz in the fashion hive for a while, with big powerhouse labels now turning to collaborations with sports brands to add a cool twist into the mix, duly including sports pieces in the collection, but decisively smartened up. As a consequence of the rampant trainers culture and a shifting dress code there has been a fundamental change in men’s fashion: comfort has got cool.

En 2019 se celebra un cumpleaños importante, el de la Bauhaus, la escuela de diseño fundada en 1929 en Weimar por Walter Gropius y aún hoy considerada como una de las expresiones más influyentes y significativas del movimiento moderno. Crear objetos bellos y funcionales al alcance de todos: este era el objetivo de la Bauhaus, poder unificar arte y tecnología afrontando los retos y las exigencias de la producción en masa. Por ello, se buscaba obsesivamente la simplicidad: cuanto más esencial era el diseño, más fácil era su realización a nivel industrial. Bauhaus no es solamente arquitectura sino también decoración, diseño, artesanías, fotografía, diseño gráfico. Por las aulas de Weimar y posteriormente de Dessau y Berlín, pasaron exponentes de las vanguardias más importantes de los primeros años del novecientos, como Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Breuer, Anni Albers, Oskar Schlemmer, László Moholy-Nagy, Theo van Doesburg. La nueva visión estética y funcional de la Bauhaus fue el puntapié inicial del Movimiento Moderno, que marcó el gran momento de renovación de la arquitectura moderna cuyos protagonistas fueron Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright y Le Corbusier. La editorial Taschen publicó el volumen “Bauhaus” y recorre la historia a través de las obras de sus artistas más importantes.

The year 2019 marked an important anniversary, that of the Bauhaus, the design school founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1929 and now regarded as one of the most influential and significant expressions of the Modernism movement. Its aim was to create beautiful yet functional objects, within the reach of all, and to achieve this the Bauhaus philosophy was to unite art and technology, taking on the challenges and requirements of mass production. The result was an obsessive quest for simplicity – the more essential the design, the easier it would be to manufacture it on an industrial scale. Bauhaus wasn’t just architecture, it was also about furnishings, design, artisanal techniques, photography and graphics. The studios of Weimar and later Dessau and Berlin hosted the most important practitioners of the early 20th century avant-garde, including Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Breuer, Anni Albers, Oskar Schlemmer, László Moholy-Nagy and Theo van Doesburg. It was the new aesthetic and functionalist vision propounded by the Bauhaus that launched the Modernism movement, the great period of renewal in modern architecture featuring such celebrated figures as Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. Published by Taschen, the book “Bauhaus” tells the story of the school through the works of its most important supporters. Produced in collaboration with the BauhausArchiv/Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin, the world’s largest collection of material on the history of the Bauhaus, it offers over 575 illustrations, with architectural plans, studies, photos, sketches and models. Iconic designer Mary Quant is synonymous with some of the era-defining styles of the 60s, with the miniskirt becoming the symbol of a second wave of feminism. Quant pushed the boundaries of fashion, breaking design rules with her higher hemlines - the mini became the emblem of a sexual revolution and the women’s liberation movement.

From miniskirts and hot pants to vibrant tights and makeup, Mary Quant launched a fashion revolution on the British high street, and her work is now on show at the Victoria & Albert in London with over 200 garments and accessories, including unseen pieces from the designer’s personal archive. The exhibition spans the years 1955 – 1975, exploring how Quant ignited a youth culture revolution around the world with her playful designs. With the 1955 opening of her shop Bazaar at 138A King’s Road, London, Quant liberated fashion, freeing women from restrictive rules and from the requirement to dress like their mothers. Famed for her eccentric window displays and irreverent attitude, she made the Chelsea look and the miniskirt globally iconic styles, and showed that fashion had personality.

Desde sus minifaldas y sus shorts hasta sus medias y sus líneas de maquillaje, Mary Quant inició una revolución en la moda que conquistó Gran Bretaña y que ahora podemos admirar en una exposición del Museo Victoria & Albert de Londres, que recoge más de 200 prendas y accesorios entre los que se incluyen piezas nunca vistas del archivo personal de la diseñadora. La exposición abarca desde el año 1955 hasta 1975 y nos muestra cómo Quant dio el pistoletazo de salida a una revolución cultural de la juventud en todo el mundo, gracias a sus vistosos diseños. Desde que abriera su tienda Bazaar en el año 1955 en el número 138A de King´s Road de Londres, Quant dio alas a la moda y liberó a las mujeres de reglas estrictas y de tener que vestirse como sus madres. Famosa por la excentricidad de sus escaparates y por su actitud irreverente, Mary Quant fue la creadora del look Chelsea y consiguió convertir a la minifalda en un ícono a nivel mundial, demostrando además que la moda tenía personalidad.

This season, bows are set to rule as the pret tiest fashion embellishment. In and out of fashion for centuries, bows have shown they are a timeless shape in both fashion and jeweller y. E xhibiting a cascade of bows on her stomacher in many of her paintings, Madame Pompadour was a symbol of Rococo fashion, and became one of the most significant figures in French fashion. Louis X V’s mistress of magnificence became not just a household name but also a lasting icon of rococo frivolit y with her dresses over flowing with frills, ruf fles and bows. Menswear’s leading talents have once again set the tone for the new season’s collections. As usual, sportswear added some serious steez to the SS19 sartorial agenda, with all-white ensembles championing a full tonal look come summer. Sportswear is about to go offbeat, combining high design and tech materials for all-season outerwear. The result is metallic anoraks, flyaway coats, loose voluminous parkas and over-layered trenches in the mix. Deconstructed tailoring, padded-up details and asymmetrical cuts are in rigorous stone colours, soft grey, off-white, contrasting black and white for a monochrome effect. There’s a move towards chill-out tailoring worn loose and soft on the skin. Streetwear and sportswear have been the main buzz in the fashion hive for a while, with big powerhouse labels now turning to collaborations with sports brands to add a cool twist into the mix, duly including sports pieces in the collection, but decisively smartened up. As a consequence of the rampant trainers culture and a shifting dress code there has been a fundamental change in men’s fashion: comfort is now cool.

Fashion tastemakers have gone tech and sustainable in a world where tracksuits have moved away from the pyjama look to become high fashion - worn strictly loose.

El sportwear está a punto de dejar de ser convencional, combinando alta costura con materiales tecnológicos para una ropa de abrigo que se pueda llevar todo el año. El resultado es una mezcla de anoraks metalizados, abrigos ligeros, parkas sueltas y voluminosas y gabardinas superpuestas. A CENTURY of BAUHAUS

The year 2019 marked an important anniversary, that of the Bauhaus, the design school founded by Walter Gropius in Weimar in 1929 and now regarded as one of the most influential and significant expressions of the Modernism movement. Its aim was to create beautiful yet functional objects, within the reach of all, and to achieve this the Bauhaus philosophy was to unite art and technology, taking on the challenges and requirements of mass production. The result was an obsessive quest for simplicity – the more essential the design, the easier it would be to manufacture it on an industrial scale. Bauhaus wasn’t just architecture, it was also about furnishings, design, artisanal techniques, photography and graphics. The studios of Weimar and later Dessau and Berlin hosted the most important practitioners of the early 20th century avant-garde, including Mies van der Rohe, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Breuer, Anni Albers, Oskar Schlemmer, László Moholy-Nagy and Theo van Doesburg. It was the new aesthetic and functionalist vision propounded by the Bauhaus that launched the Modernism movement, the great period of renewal in modern architecture featuring such celebrated figures as Alvar Aalto, Frank Lloyd Wright and Le Corbusier. Published by Taschen, the book “Bauhaus” tells the story of the school through the works of its most important supporters. Produced in collaboration with the BauhausArchiv/Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin, the world’s largest collection of material on the history of the Bauhaus, it offers over 575 illustrations, with architectural plans, studies, photos, sketches and models. A vital aid to preparing for the birthday celebrations.

En 2019 se celebra un cumpleaños importante, el de la Bauhaus, la escuela de diseño fundada en 1929 en Weimar por Walter Gropius y aún hoy considerada como una de las expresiones más influyentes y significativas del movimiento moderno. Crear objetos bellos y funcionales al alcance de todos: este era el objetivo de la Bauhaus, poder unificar arte y tecnología afrontando los retos y las exigencias de la producción en masa. Iconic designer Mary Quant is synonymous with some of the era-defining styles of the 60s, with the miniskirt becoming the symbol of a second wave of feminism. Quant pushed the boundaries of fashion, breaking design rules with her higher hemlines - the mini became the emblem of a sexual revolution and the women’s liberation movement.

From miniskirts and hot pants to vibrant tights and makeup, Mary Quant launched a fashion revolution on the British high street, and her work is now on show at the Victoria & Albert in London with over 200 garments and accessories, including unseen pieces from the designer’s personal archive. The exhibition spans the years 1955 – 1975, exploring how Quant ignited a youth culture revolution around the world with her playful designs. With the 1955 opening of her shop Bazaar at 138A King’s Road, London, Quant liberated fashion, freeing women from restrictive rules and from the requirement to dress like their mothers. Famed for her eccentric window displays and irreverent attitude, she made the Chelsea look and the miniskirt globally iconic styles, and showed that fashion had personality.

Desde sus minifaldas y sus shorts hasta sus medias y sus líneas de maquillaje, Mary Quant inició una revolución en la moda que conquistó Gran Bretaña y que ahora podemos admirar en una exposición del Museo Victoria & Albert de Londres, que recoge más de 200 prendas y accesorios entre los que se incluyen piezas nunca vistas del archivo personal de la diseñadora. La exposición abarca desde el año 1955 hasta 1975 y nos muestra cómo Quant dio el pistoletazo de salida a una revolución cultural de la juventud en todo el mundo, gracias a sus vistosos diseños. Desde que abriera su tienda Bazaar en el año 1955 en el número 138A de King´s Road de Londres, Quant dio alas a la moda y liberó a las mujeres de reglas estrictas y de tener que vestirse como sus madres. THE POWER OF STORYTELLING | EL PODER DE NARRAR HISTORIAS Noël Hertling can spell out a story on canvas, with each brushstroke evoking emotion and firing the imagination. In a series of seven paintings, the Ibiza-based artist depicts the extraordinary moment diamond-bearing meteorites rained down on the Nubian Desert in 2008, an event known as the ‘A lmahata Sitta’.

Noël Hertling sabe perfectamente cómo narrar una historia sobre un lienzo y cada una de las pinceladas, evoca emociones y activa la imaginación. Este artista radicado en Ibiza ha retratado el extraordinario momento en que meteoritos con corazón de diamante cayeron sobre el desierto de Nubia en Sudán en 2008, un fenómeno que recibió el nombre de ‘Almahata Sitta’.

Tell us about your journey as an artist It’s simple - there are no limits to the freedom provided by creativity. I have a variety of professions including a conservator of antique furniture, cabinet maker, graphic designer and photographer. They all place limitations on creativity and art is the only way to conquer and move forward. Art is the ultimate kick.

Háblanos sobre tu viaje como artista Es fácil. En aras de la libertad de la creatividad no existen límites. Me dedico a varias profesiones y soy restaurador de muebles antiguos, fabricante de armarios, diseñador gráfico y fotógrafo. Cada una de estas profesiones tiene sus limitaciones en lo que respecta a la creatividad y el arte es la única manera de superarlas y seguir adelante. El arte es el empujón definitivo.

What inspires you?

Curiosity, mystery and observation. Looking for appropriate solutions is an important source of inspiration and wanting to uncover things that can be found everywhere. I find them while travelling, at home, sitting and watching the sea, listening to the sounds of nature during a walk or the rush of cities and people.

¿Qué te inspira?

La curiosidad, el misterio y la observación. Buscar soluciones adecuadas es una fuente de inspiración importantísima, así como querer descubrir las cosas que están en otros sitios. Encuentro esa inspiración mientras viajo, en casa, sentado mientras observo el mar o escuchando el sonido de la naturaleza durante un paseo o en medio del ajetreo de la ciudad y la gente.

What message are you trying to convey to us with your art?

I prefer to work and play with opposites, especially in installations.

My exhibits are inviting and give visitors an opportunity to experience art as something visually appealing. But they also carry a hidden message that is unnoticed and more subconscious.

My paintings tell stories with messages that include socio-critical aspects, experiences or events, like in Meteorite Fall – Almahahta Sitta.

What is your creative process?

A situation that gives me the importance of a message. It comes instinctively, as an impact. I visualise the final artwork immediately in my mind and make decisions as to what medium can communicate it most effectively. My creative process revolves around the work process, but the transformation is more complex and technical.

What projects are you working on now?

At the moment I am working on three projects. The major one is ‘The Celebration of Nelson Mandela’s Life’ and is based on a special print technique. The second is an installation called ‘The Man Who’s Not Permitted to Enter the Senator Lounge’ and the third one is ‘Pink Panther Chasing Inspector Clouseau’ in a combination of two paintings.

Where does your curiosity take you?

Having enough time to ground myself and deliberate is really important to me, which is why I escaped to South Africa for six months and move to a different country every three to five years.

I do not want to be pinned to daily routines or stay in my comfort zone, ultimately losing curiosity. Curiosity means visual thirst. They are strongly connected and have a big influence on each other.

¿Cuál es el mensaje que quieres hacernos llegar con tu arte?

Me gusta trabajar y jugar con los opuestos, sobre todo en las instalaciones. Mis exposiciones son receptivas y dan a los visitantes la oportunidad de experimentar el arte como algo visualmente atractivo. Pero también transportan un mensaje oculto que pasa desapercibido y estimulan el subconsciente. Mis pinturas narran historias con mensajes que incluyen aspectos críticos de la sociedad o cuentan experiencias o eventos, como la lluvia de meteoritos de Almahata Sitta. ¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo?

Una situación me regala la importancia de un mensaje. Es algo instintivo. Como si se tratara de un impacto. En mi cabeza visualizo la obra artística de forma inmediata y ahí decido cuál es el mejor medio para plasmarla. Mi proceso creativo tiene que ver con el procedimiento del trabajo, aunque la transformación sea más compleja y más técnica. ¿En qué proyectos estás trabajando ahora?

En este momento estoy haciendo tres proyectos. El más importante se titula “The Celebration of Nelson Mandela’s Life” y lo estoy haciendo con una técnica de impresión especial. El segundo proyecto es una instalación titulada “The Man Who’s Not Permitted to Enter the Senator Lounge” y el tercero es “Pink Panther Chasing Inspector Clouseau”, que es una combinación de dos cuadros. ¿Hacia dónde te lleva tu curiosidad?

Para mí es muy importante tener tiempo suficiente para detenerme y pensar. Por eso me fui a Sudáfrica durante seis meses y cada tres o cinco años, me mudo a un país distinto. No quiero aferrarme a las rutinas diarias ni quedarme en mi zona de confort, pues acabaría perdiendo la curiosidad. La curiosidad es sinónimo de ansia visual. Ambas cosas tienen un poderoso vínculo entre sí y, a su vez, una ejerce una gran influencia sobre la otra.

What is the process behind your art?

What I can say for sure is that my little gizmos seem to appear out of the blue, just like that. Pop! There, and the next. Then often I can’t stop and sit there all night and drink far too much coffee.

What artistic challenge does digital art pose for you?

Where is your art taking you?

You have a passion to help other artists. Why is that?

I have a mission to help colleagues with my magazine. I guess I am one of those who feel happy when they can support others in their aspirations. I was born into an unusually selfless family, where both my parents were exceptionally generous and welcoming with a real interest and devotion to others.

Una de tus pasiones es ayudar a otros artistas. ¿Por qué?

Mi misión es ayudar con mi revista a mis colegas. Supongo que soy una de esas personas que se sienten felices cuando pueden apoyar las aspiraciones de los demás. Vengo de una familia inusualmente altruista, con unos padres excepcionalmente generosos y acogedores, con un interés y una devoción genuina por los demás.

Why did you start the IbizArtGuide?

There is a high potential in visual arts on the island, which apart from fashion design is largely undeveloped. One reason may be the prevailing naive and provincial attitude as well as a lack of self motivation. Ibiza is the island of a thousand sleeping beauties, where many people do amazing things in little caves. It took me years to understand that the main barrier for art life in Ibiza is the lack of outbound communication. This is why I supported the Gallery Cap Square in the 90’s with the idea of stirring the melting pot and bringing it to the boil. We have a unique, strong artistic spirit here, different from all urban art scenes. We believe in innocence, intuition and light, in the good and timeless. So, apart from bringing the nice stuff out of the caves, it had to be made visible abroad. .

En la isla hay un gran potencial para las artes visuales y, salvo por el diseño de moda, gran parte está todavía sin desarrollar. Puede ser que una de las causas sea la predominante actitud ingenua y provinciana, además de que falte algo de impulso propio. Ibiza es la tierra de un millar de bellezas durmientes, donde mucha gente hace cosas increíbles en pequeñas cavernas. Tardé años en entender que la principal barrera para la vida artística en Ibiza es la falta de comunicación con el exterior. Por eso apoyé la Gallery Cap Square en los años 90 con la idea de remover bien la olla y hacer que hirviera. Tenemos un espíritu artístico fuerte y único, diferente de todas las escenas de arte urbanas. Creemos en la inocencia, en la intuición y en la luz, en lo bueno y en lo atemporal. Así que además de sacar las cosas bonitas de las cavernas, también tienen que ser visibles en el extranjero.

Where is your art taking you?

As an editor, I found a concept to showcase sleeping beauties in a high-quality printed annual magazine that people would not throw away, but set proudly on their coffee or waiting room tables. It worked, the IbizArtGuide has become a collectible. There’s also the IbizaArtShop, an online sales platform for authentic art from Ibiza, now run by the IbizaArtUnion. As for my digital pieces, people keep asking me to use them on consumer products. This took me some years to accept and like, but now I can go ahead and prepare some merchandise.

¿Dónde te está llevando tu trabajo?

Como editor, he descubierto el concepto de mostrar bellezas durmientes en una revista anual impresa de alta calidad y que la gente no la quiera tirar, si no que desee conservarla con orgullo sobre la mesa de su salón o en la sala de espera. Y ha funcionado.

I explained every photo shot sequence in detail, gave instructions for lightning, set design and each move of my cast and technical crew. It was quite an adventure, and a very exciting time.

He explicado con detalle cada secuencia de la sesión de fotos y di instrucciones para la iluminación, el diseño del set y para cada paso que debía dar mi equipo artístico y técnico.

Ha sido toda una aventura, muy emocionante.

I divided the book into 15 different subjects like “rue Cambon”, “Grand Palais”, “Future Couture” and I finished the book with “Imperium Chanel”. The setting on “Coco on Travel” and “Imperium Chanel” was something very special.

I wallpapered the entire place Vendôme where Coco Chanel opened her first boutique, et voilà, a beautiful series of Coco’s Parisian life was created.

He dividido el libro en 15 temas diferentes como “rue Cambon”, “Grand Palais”, “Future Couture” y lo he terminado con “Imperium Chanel”. El montaje de “Coco on Travel” e “Imperium Chanel” fue algo muy especial. Coloqué papel pintado por toda la plaza Vendôme, donde Coco Chanel abrió su primer boutique, et voilà, así pude crear una preciosa serie de imágenes de la vida parisina de Coco.

It must feel like an otherworldly experience to photograph in the Grand Palais…

My photoshoots in the Grand Palais were an adventure, I’ve worked there for the past decade. I’ve photographed several times in this magnificent historical monument, which is for me the largest daylight studio in Paris. On top of this, I was able to photograph the Haute Couture Chanel collection on the roof, nothing could be more French than to see the Tricolour flag in the background.

Mis sesiones de fotos en el Grand Palais fueron toda una aventura. He trabajado allí durante la última década.

He tomado fotos en varias ocasiones en este magnífico monumento histórico y para mí es el estudio con luz natural más grande de París. Además, pude fotografiar la colección de Alta Costura de Chanel en la azotea. No hay nada más francés que ver la bandera tricolor de fondo.

Challenges, points, objectives, fun and energy. The old saying that life is a game is truer than ever. For better or worse, it’s all down to gamification, where the mechanisms of game-playing are applied to non-game contexts. The system used in companies to incentivise staff by awarding them points and prizes is infiltrating the public sector, being adopted by local administrations, and is gaining increasing popularity in our private life.

Retos, puntajes, metas, sonidos y animación. Si se dice que la vida es un juego, en esta época es más real que nunca.

El mérito o la culpa es de la gamification, que utiliza los mecanismos típicos del juego pero en ámbitos que no son lúdicos. El sistema que utiliza una empresa para estimular a sus empleados, gratificándolos con puntajes y premios, también está invadiendo la esfera pública de las administraciones municipales y cada vez más, está llegando a la vida privada.

The residents of Santa Monica, California, take part in an overall points-scoring initiative for the city, expressing their satisfaction with its urban choices through a sort of Tinder. In Boston, citizens win points by sending the authorities information on traffic, micro-criminality, WiFi access and waste disposal. In Moscow, they can participate in the public consultations held by the mayor, pay for parking, buy metro tickets and take part in prize lotteries.

En Santa Mónica, California, los ciudadanos participan al puntaje total de la ciudad expresando su parecer sobre las decisiones urbanísticas a través de una especie de Tinder. En Boston, obtienen puntaje si envían a la administración comunal informaciones sobre el tráfico, micro criminalidad, acceso al Wi-Fi y gestión de los residuos. Games can also begin to take on an unsettling resemblance to an episode of Black Mirror in cities like Suning, China, where citizens win or lose points on the basis of their behaviour in society. They can earn points by helping an old person, for example, or be penalised if stopped while drunk. If you are a good citizen you can jump the queue on the employment register, but if you behave badly you could even be stripped of the right to access the nearest Accident and Emergency department.

The Buzzydoc platform is for orthodontists, optometrists and dentists, creating a prize system where patients are rewarded with points if they arrive on time for appointments or follow all the doctor’s recommendations. The aim is to reduce overall costs and create loyalty among patients, who seem to behave better because of the App. The game system also works well for losing weight. The Lose It! app enables users to track calorie intake, set objectives and challenge friends to see who can lose the most weight. If you follow a healthy, balanced diet you’ll be rewarded with a “green” day. In times of crisis it’s the turn of large programmes like Plum, which provides readonly access to your bank transactions. The App analyses your spending and transfers the money you save every day to nest egg account. Chip has the same aim, using an algorithm to calculate how much you can save on the basis of your spending habits. You can also set a target like buying a new car, and Chip will programme savings plans to help you get there.

The aim is to refrain from using your phone for at least 25 minutes. If you succeed, a virtual tree will be planted for you – the longer you hold out the faster your virtual forest will grow.

It’s been around the world, from Germany to Mexico and South Korea, but until now it hadn’t visited his real home.

“The Exhibition”, the travelling exhibition dedicated to Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999), which opened in 2004 at the Deutsches Filmmuseum of Frankfurt, finally arrives in London after a tour of eighteen cities, sponsored by the publishing giant Taschen.

Now it’s the turn of the UK, the country the American director made his home and where he made most of his films, to play host. It’s where he built some of his most famous sets, like Full Metal Jacket (1987), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) and Dr Strangelove (1964). The location chosen for this treat for movie buffs is the Design Museum. After opening its doors in 2016 in the majestic venue on High Street Kensington, the former Commonwealth Institute, it has gained a reputation for its cross-media approach to design and was nominated European Museum of the Year in 2018. This ground-breaking overview of the work of one of the great masters of 20th century cinema provides a unique opportunity to see many archive pieces from the director’s personal collection and enter the world of his cinematic imagination.

Finalmente se presentará en Londres, “The Exhibition”, la muestra itinerante dedicada a Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999), inaugurada en 2004 en el Deutsches Filmmuseum de Frankfurt. Tras haber recorrido dieciocho ciudades, patrocinada por el coloso editorial Taschen, la próxima cita será el Reino Unido, país en el que el visionario director de cine estadounidense vivió y filmó la mayoría de sus películas. Allí fue donde realizó sus sets más célebres, como el de La Chaqueta Metálica (1987), 2001: Una Odisea en el Espacio (1968) y ¿Teléfono rojo? Volamos hacia Moscú (1964). El lugar elegido para el evento más esperado por los cinéfilos es el Design Museum que, luego de abrir sus puertas en el 2016 en la majestuosa sede de High Street Kensington, ex Commonwealth Institute, se ha distinguido por su enfoque cross-mediático en el sector del diseño y en el 2018 fue designado Museo Europeo del Año. Una retrospectiva inédita sobre el trabajo de uno de los más grandes maestros del siglo XX, única ocasión para ver objetos y materiales provenientes de la colección personal del director y sumergirse en su imaginario cinematográfico.

A retrospective of his career, the show begins with his formative years as a photographer for the prestigious LOOK magazine, and then develops over material linked to his twelve cult feature films, closing with projects he left unfinished. From The Killing (1955) to Eyes Wide Shut (1999), props, costumes, models, documents, equipment and original photos bring Kubrick’s masterworks to life, revealing his painstaking, at times almost obsessive creative process and his lifelong interest in design, as seen from the his many collaborations with some of the greatest professionals of the era, from Hardy Amies to Saul Bass, Eliot Noyes and Ken Adam. It’s said that Bass, the American creative talent who revolutionised the way film titles are made and elevating them to a new art form, had to make three hundred versions of the iconic poster for The Shining before the exacting director declared himself satisfied. His close attention to the construction of every scene and the space the action takes place in transformed every frame of his film into emblematic images, powerful visual metaphors studied in film schools, referenced in books, advertisements and communications so frequently that the word “Kubrickian” is now included in the Oxford English Dictionary.

Recorriendo su carrera, la muestra comienza en sus años de aprendizaje como fotógrafo en la prestigiosa revista LOOK , continúa mostrando el material relacionado con los doce largometrajes de culto y culmina con los proyectos que quedaron incompletos.

Desde Atraco Perfecto (1955) hasta Eyes Wide Shut (1999), la exposición reúne utillaje, vestuario, modelos, documentos, equipos y fotografías originales en los que recobran vida las obras maestras de Kubrick, mostrando su meticuloso y, hasta a veces, obsesivo proceso creativo y su interés por el diseño, como lo atestiguan las numerosas colaboraciones con algunos de los más grandes profesionales de su época: de Hardy Amies a Saul Bass, de Eliot Noyes a Ken Adam. Bass, el creativo estadounidense que revolucionó la manera de hacer los títulos de crédito llevándolos a obras de arte, tuvo que presentar 300 versiones diferentes del cartel de El Resplandor antes de satisfacer al exigente cineasta.

Su atención en la construcción de cada escena y del espacio de la acción, han transformado los fotogramas de sus películas en imágenes emblemáticas, metáforas visivas potentes, que han sido estudiadas en las escuelas, citadas en los libros, en la publicidad y en la comunicación, a tal punto que existe el término “kubrickian” en el Oxford English Dictionary.

The meticulous construction of the spaces in which his characters move means that his works are fascinating sources of interiors, furniture, objects and clothing that are always perfectly in tune with their period. The cult director comes to life through his unmistakeable symbols, like the star child costumes and the man-ape of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Jack Torrance’s axe and the twins’ outfit from The Shining, the “Born to Kill” helmet from Full Metal Jacket and the masks from Eyes Wide Shut. The exhibition also features a number of unfinished projects, including the film on the life of Napoleon, a figure to whom Kubrick dedicated over twenty years of work, although he never found the considerable investment needed to complete the task. The homage to the Master continues until 31 May at the BFI Southbank with screenings of his work and a special new film edition of A Clockwork Orange. BBC TV and Radio are also braodcasting a series of programmes on Kubrick.

De hecho, su manera de construir meticulosamente las escenas en las que se mueven los personajes, hizo que sus obras fueran fuentes provechosas de espacios, muebles, objetos y vestuario perfectamente sintonizados con la época que representaban. El director de culto de la séptima arte revive a través de sus íconos inconfundibles, como el traje del niño estrella o el disfraz del hombre-mono de 2001: Odisea en el Espacio, el hacha de Jack Torrance y los vestidos de las hermanas gemelas de El Resplandor, el casco “Born to Kill” de La Chaqueta Metálica y las máscaras de Eyes Wide Shut.

En la exposición se encuentran los proyectos que nunca pudo realizar, como el de la vida de Napoleón, personaje al que Kubrick le dedicó más de 20 años de trabajo y del que no logró encontrar la ingente suma de dinero necesaria. El homenaje al Maestro continuará hasta el 31 de mayo en el BFI Southbank con la proyección de sus películas y una re-edición especial del film Naranja Mecánica junto a un programa en BBC TV y radio.

If anyone thought glass was a passing fad, they were wrong – glass is becoming an increasingly central element in yacht design. Owners’ wishes and designers’ proposals are gradually moving towards a more emphatic use of glass in every part of the yacht. Recently-launched sail and motor craft have featured expanses of this versatile material. It’s not just a nod to future-proofing or a way of building cathedrals in the desert for the latest set of new rich arrivistes looking to demonstrate they have the biggest, most transparent craft on the water – no, even the most traditional yards, designers and owners are seeking yachts where light can enter the interiors in an uninterrupted flow.

As well as the material’s literal flexibility, its new-found popularity is down to the aesthetic appeal of the futuristic shapes glass can create.

The use of glass in a maritime setting is attractive because of its ability to allow the beauty and visual excitement of the exterior to be brought inside the yacht, adding breadth and impact to the interiors. Glass can open out 360-degree panoramas of the waterline or a thrilling view of a sail superyacht’s 60 or 70 metre high mast seen from its base.

Si alguien pensaba que fuese una moda pasajera, deberá cambiar idea: la transparencia es, cada vez más, un elemento central en el diseño de yates. El deseo de los armadores y las propuestas de los diseñadores, estimulan siempre más y donde sea posible, el uso del vidrio en los yates. Que sea de vela o motor, no importa, las recientes botaduras tienen más elementos de vidrio. Pero no es solamente la bizarría de un concept futurista ni tampoco una catedral en el desierto del nuevo rico del momento, que quiere demostrar a todos que la suya es la más grande y la más transparente de todas.

Hasta los astilleros y diseñadores más tradicionales y los armadores menos excéntricos cuando deben elegir su propio barco, teniendo en cuenta la estética en general, buscan yates donde la luz circule sin obstáculos, de afuera hacia adentro.

Gran parte del mérito, además de la dote que hemos citado, es la flexibilidad del material, como así también el encanto estético de las formas futurísticas que el vidrio puede crear.

La aplicación del vidrio en un ambiente de navegación, es interesante por su capacidad de dar belleza y emociones visivas del exterior hacia el interior, logrando que se sume una nueva dimensión a los ambientes internos. De todas formas, el vidrio puede ofrecer vistas panorámicas a 360° de la línea de flotación o una vista sugestiva a 60 o 70 metros de altura del mástil de un superyate de vela visto desde su base.

Owners in the 21st century want their yachts to allow more natural light to enter than was the case up until a few years ago, creating a closer connection with the exterior. Glass is also a reliable way of adding a “wow” factor to any yacht design, creating beautiful, elegant shapes while providing an opportunity to embrace new technologies. Finally, glass is extremely practical because it can be moulded to almost any shape and new production techniques make it tough and enduring – it is often the glass elements of the quickwork that last the longest.

The most frequently used type of glass used is a safety glass made of two or three chemically-hardened layers.

To avoid any problems involved in gaining certification and attestation regarding suitability for use – for as we know, sometimes the sea can show its most aggressive, malevolent face – the composite materials used are approved by the main certification bodies like RINA, Lloyd’s Register, ABS and Bureau Veritas and accepted by all the main classification companies. Nowadays larger and larger stretches of the superstructure – and even the hull – can be made entirely of glass. The most cuttingedge design studios and builders use glass with built-in sensors that enable damage to be detected immediately.

The sensors constantly monitor the condition of the sheets and this information is passed on to the management and alarm systems.

Los dueños del siglo XXI desean que sus yates dejen entrar más luz natural respecto a lo que sucedía años atrás pues quieren una conexión mayor con el ambiente exterior. El vidrio también es un camino seguro a tomar, pues garantiza el efecto “wow” de cualquier proyecto de yate, creando formas bellas y elegantes y ofreciendo, al mismo tiempo, la oportunidad de abrazar las nuevas tecnologías.

El vidrio también es práctico para usar porque es moldeable para obtener cualquier forma y las nuevas tecnologías garantizan la resistencia y la duración: a menudo, la parte de vidrio es la más dura de la obra viva.

El material que normalmente se utiliza es un vidrio de seguridad compuesto, que se obtiene utilizando dos o más capas de vidrio endurecido químicamente. Para evitar cualquier tipo de problema durante la etapa de certificación del yate y de constancia de idoneidad (se sabe que el mar cada tanto muestra su parte más aguerrida y mala), los compuestos deben estar aprobados por los principales entes de certificación como Rina, Lloyd’s Register, ABS, Bureau Veritas y debe ser aceptado por las principales sociedades de clasificación. A día de hoy, las áreas cada vez más grandes de las superestructuras y hasta de los cascos, se pueden construir totalmente con vidrio. Por ello, los estudios de proyectos y los astilleros más vanguardistas, utilizan vidrios a los que se les integran sensores que permiten relevar inmediatamente eventuales daños.

Los sensores integrados miden constantemente el estado de los recuadros enviando las informaciones a los sistemas de gestión y de alarma.

The main strength of the glass from an aesthetic point of view, its transparency, also imposes the most important limitations on its use for certain applications – nobody wants to live in a glass house. It’s wonderful to be able see what’s outside from every part of the yacht, but that also means people can see in to every part, too. Now, though, technologies exist that can avoid the problems posed by transparency. One example is liquid crystals inside the glass structure – when an electric field is generated, they orientate themselves in a way that renders the glass opaque.

Adhesive, transparent film can also be applied to the glass to transform it from clear to opaque, immediately or gradually.

In this case, as well as functioning as a screen, all types of multimedia content can be projected onto the adhesive film and controlled remotely by multimedia software on a tablet or smartphone.

Desde un punto de vista estético, la principal cualidad del vidrio es la transparencia, pero en ciertas aplicaciones puede llegar a ser una limitación. Sabéis qué significa vivir en una casa de vidrio, ¿verdad?

Es maravilloso poder ver desde cualquier lugar hacia afuera pero también esto significa que de afuera se puede ver todo el interior de vuestra casa. Actualmente, existen tecnologías que evitan estos inconvenientes de transparencia. Por ejemplo, cristales líquidos dentro de la estructura de vidrio que, al ser sometidos a un campo eléctrico, se orientan de tal manera que los vuelven opacos. O películas adhesivas y transparentes que se aplican a las superficies vítreas transformándolas de claras a opacas, inmediatamente o en forma gradual. En este caso, además de cumplir la función de protección, sirve como pantalla en la que se puede proyectar el contenido multimedia que se desee, controlado a distancia por medio de software multimedia para utilizar en una tableta o en un smartphone.

Dan Lenard’s day job is designing yachts. He’s a famous name in his field, a well-established figure. During his twentyfive years of activity with the studio that bears his name and that of his partner Carlo Nuvolari he has designed more than 350 craft, including Perini’s 64-metre ketch Spirit of the C’s, Steven Spielberg’s Seven Seas and the imposing 106-metre Black Pearl. Built by Oceanco, it is the world’s largest private yacht. His choice for the Atlantic crossing, though, with the purpose of drawing attention to the damage being cause by plastic flotsam, was Scia, a 33-foot (ten metre) sail yacht. In fact, this Frankenyacht was built by putting together pieces from other, decommissioned craft. “We recycled parts from yachts in various stages of construction. We joined the hull and deck from different ten-year-old boats, the mast is from an abandoned Bavaria Match 35 and the rudder’s from another yacht”, says Lenard. “I can’t preach about sustainability and then sail a non-recycled yacht. We used 100 kilos of resin for the various joints, then we thought about giving it an aesthetically-acceptable shape”. No engine, electronics, GPS, log, compass or autopilot were installed, nothing.

Alone and with no back-up, the only instrument the designer permitted himself was a chronometer by Ulysse Nardin, the sponsor of the initiative together with the Ocean Conservancy, Mirpuri and Water Revolution foundations, the Cook For Your Life initiative in support of cancer victims, the Carlo Muretti glass-making company of Murano, Mercedes Benz and the Monte Carlo Yachts yard, which through its yachts designed by Nuvolari Lenard seeks to eliminate waste by using recyclable materials wherever possible.

“I thought the most significant stumbling block would be sailing without instruments, but whoever said that any piece of wood thrown into the Atlantic will sooner or later end up in the Caribbean was absolutely right. The wind takes you in the right direction”, he said during the last few miles of his voyage, when renewed mobile phone coverage enabled him to contact “civilisation” once again after a month of total radio silence. To maintain the correct heading he set the on-board clock to local time on the island of Saint John’s, Antigua. Dan knew exactly what time the sun would rise and set over the island, so he always knew where to point his bow. “In the final days I saw a private aircraft fly over, almost certainly heading for Antigua, carrying the owner to his yacht to take part in the RORC Caribbean 600, and that told me I was sailing in the right direction. Even before that the planes flying overhead helped point out the right way”.

El trabajo de Dan Lenard es el de diseñar yates, es una referencia en el sector y ya ha alcanzado la cima. El estudio que comparte con su socio Carlo Nuvolari y que lleva el apellido de ambos, en 25 años de trayectoria diseñó más de 350 barcos, entre ellos el ketch de 64 metros de Perini Spirit of the C’s, el Seven Seas de Steven Spielberg y el impresionante 106 metros Black Pearl construido por Oceanco, el velero privado más grande del mundo. Para atravesar el Atlántico y llamar la atención sobre los daños que el plástico está causando, eligió Scia, un velero de 33 pies (diez metros). Una criatura que ha nacido, mejor dicho, renacido como Frankenstein, ensamblando piezas de otros cuerpos. «Reciclamos partes de embarcaciones en diferentes fases de construcción, montamos el casco y la cubierta de barcos viejos, el mástil es de un Bavaria Match 35 que estaba abandonado y el timón es de otra embarcación», explica Lenard. “No puedo predicar la sostenibilidad y después navegar en un barco no reciclado. Para crearla, utilizamos 100 kilos de resina para los diferentes acoplamientos. Luego, hicimos nuestro trabajo de diseño para darle una forma estéticamente aceptable”. No le agregaron motor, electrónica, gps, brújula ni piloto automático, nada.

Solo y sin ningún tipo de asistencia, el diseñador ha utilizado como único instrumento de navegación un cronómetro Ulysse Nardin, patrocinador de la iniciativa junto a las Fundaciones Ocean Conservancy, Mirpuri, Water Revolution, Cook For Your Life (apoyo a pacientes oncológicos), el cristalero de murano Carlo Moretti, Mercedes Benz y el astillero Monte Carlo Yachts que con los barcos diseñados por Nuvolari Lenard, trata de eliminar los residuos y de utilizar lo más posible materiales reciclados.

“Pensaba que el reto más difícil iba a ser la navegación sin instrumentos, pero tiene razón aquel que dice que una madera en las aguas del Atlántico, llegará en algún momento al Caribe.

El viento te empuja hacia la dirección correcta”, contaba durante las últimas mil millas de navegación, cuando gracias a la red móvil tuvo nuevamente contacto con la “civilización”, después de un mes de silencio de radio. Para mantener la ruta de navegación había fijado la hora de bordo según la hora local de la isla de Saint John’s, Antigua. Dan conocía exactamente cuáles eran los horarios del amanecer y del atardecer en la isla, por ello sabía siempre hacia donde apuntar la proa. “En los últimos días vi pasar un avión privado que se estaba dirigiendo seguramente hacia Antigua para llevar el armador hacia su barco inscripto en la regata RORC Caribbean 600 y esto me confirmó que estaba siguiendo la ruta correcta. En otros momentos, los aviones que pasaron me ayudaron a mantener la dirección”.

It was a month-long voyage during which Dario only allowed himself ninety minutes’ sleep a day because the cockpit was taking in water and could be emptied only if the craft was in motion. Noseda had to reckon with a fall overboard, an aggressive dolphin butting the Star’s orange hull, a lack of food because the weather meant the crossing was taking longer than expected, a beaching at Mindelo (Santa Lucia) and a gang of looters who stripped the boat of all its electronic and computer equipment.

The next person to undertake this risky enterprise will be Matt Kent. In order to raise funds for the Bioreserve environmental education programme, he is to attempt an Atlantic crossing from the Canaries to Florida on board a craft only 42” (1.06 metres) long. Imagine being alone for four months in a box that’s not even big enough to lie down in!

The Caribbean stop was chosen to break up a crossing that took more time than expected because of a long storm that limited progress to fifty miles out of the hoped-for total of 4,500 from start to finish. The purpose of the undertaking, named Vela Code, was to draw attention to the state of neglect to which we have condemned our seas. Now plastic waste can even be found at the bottom of the Marianas Trench, eleven kilometres below the surface of the sea. It is such a widespread problem that it has even begun to appear in the food cycle of deep-sea creatures.

It’s hard to identify exactly how much damage toxic substances released by the ingested plastic and transmitted throughout the food chain cause to the health of the environment and ourselves, but it is easy to imagine on a global scale. Researchers now estimate that fifty-one trillion pieces of plastic are in the sea, 90% of which are microparticles, ingested by animals.

“I’d like to invite everyone who loves and is passionate about the sea to raise their voices in its support, promoting its conservation.

We’re now in a state of emergency”, Lenard concludes.

El objetivo de la iniciativa Vela Code, es concienciar sobre el estado de degrado al que estamos condenando al mar. Ya se ha encontrado plástico en el fondo de la Fosa de las Marianas, a 11 kilómetros de profundidad. Why did you become a DJ...

I loved music, vinyl, collecting records, record shops, radio and putting sound systems together. I was obsessed with the whole idea of becoming a DJ and standing up there making people dance and have a good time. It was what I HAD to do. Destiny.

¿Por qué te convertiste en DJ? Me encantaba la música, los vinilos, coleccionar discos, las tiendas de música, la radio y montar equipos de sonido. Estaba obsesionado con la idea de convertirme en DJ y estar ahí haciendo que la gente bailara y disfrutara. Era LO QUE TENÍA que hacer. El destino.

When did you start DJing…

I was at school playing drums in a band and converted to being a DJ when I was about 15/16 after I saw a DJ play at an end of term party. I was obsessed from the moment I set eyes on two turntables and the mixer in between.

¿Cuándo empezaste como DJ? Cuando estaba en el colegio tocaba la batería en un grupo y luego me convertí en DJ a los 15 o 16 años, después de haber visto a uno pinchar en una fiesta de fin de curso. Estuve obsesionado desde el momento en el que vi los dos platos y la mesa de mezclas en el medio.

Where do you draw inspiration preparing for a DJ set?

I have always been excited about finding amazing new records and building them into a set to play to people. That has been a constant throughout my career. Music discovery and sharing.

Really simple. For certain shows I’ll also get inspiration from scene and setting. Sometimes I think about the nature of the room and the sound system and what country or crowd I’m playing to. Time of day is important too. I’m going to play differently at 5am in an underground partyfrom at 8 pm at a festival or after sunset on the beach in Ibiza at Blue Marlin Ibiza.

¿De dónde sacas la inspiración para preparar tu set de DJ? Siempre me emociona encontrar discos nuevos y alucinantes y convertirlos en un set con el que actuar ante el público. Esa ha sido una constante durante mi carrera. Descubrir música y compartirla. Es así de sencillo. Para ciertos shows también me inspiro en el escenario y el montaje. A veces pienso en cómo es la sala, el sistema de sonido y en qué país o para qué tipo de gente estoy actuando. La hora es importante también. No actúo de la misma manera a las 5 de la mañana en una fiesta underground que en un festival a las 8 de la noche o tras la puesta de sol en la playa del Blue Marlin Ibiza.

Your best Ibiza moment…

There have been many. DJ-ing at DC10 when the wall of the club collapsed in a storm! Space Terrace Radio 1 10 year anniversary.

Pure Pacha 2003-2008. Manumission Motel. Lady Gaga @ Wonderland. Mambo Sunsets. Formentera trips. Bike ride around the island …. It don’t stop ! :)

Why did you become a DJ...

I arrived in the scene through a love and passion for music. I was a teenager when I discovered Detroit and Chicago house music, which changed my life forever. When the scene developed around my hometown a few years later, I experienced the art of DJs. Tell us about your music label Sapiens.

I have a feeling that the artists that I have signed are creating the label. Like a football team, they are players making the game and I am just the coach! I always felt music came to my ears naturally and through the label I have had the chance to wor with amazing artists.

Sapiens also features work by visual artists, sound designers and film directors. What was your motivation behind this?

I am surrounded by film directors, actors and sound designers every day and I am currently creating a few film scores that will be on screens next year. I could not be happier with the results from my own music videos. The film directors that I have wor ed with dedicated so much time and took insane risks, but their light, stories, casting and directions have been incredible.

You are also an accomplished producer. What is your source of inspiration when creating music?

My focus is to take pleasure from my work and make the process of recording fun, collaborating with many musicians and sharing positive energy.

What projects are you working on now?

I just released my album Drift which took four years to complete and includes recordings of great voices and musicians. The album expresses my innocent and guilty pleasures, so it’s one that you can listen to at home or on the dance floor. It includes remixes from some of the best DJs and is also the inspiration for my Blue Marlin Ibiza residency!

What surprises do you have in store for your Blue Marlin Ibiza residency?

The idea is for everyone to be Drifted! You will listen to great house music and beautiful melodies. Ibiza is full of open-minded people and for this reason I want to mix different genres of music.

Amazing artists will share the decks with me each week, all playing their guilty treasures!

What is special about the energy at Blue Marlin Ibiza?

The location and work achieved at Blue Marlin Ibiza over the years is incredible. It’s an institution! I am glad to be part of this family. I have had lots of fun every time I have played here and I couldn’t be happier about my residency!

¿Qué te convirtió en DJ? Llegué a este mundo por mi amor y mi pasión por la música. De adolescente descubrí la música house de Chicago y Detroit y eso me cambió la vida para siempre. Cuando la escena llegó hasta mi ciudad natal unos cuantos años después, pude experimentar el arte de los DJs. Háblanos de tu sello musical Sapiens.

Creo que los artistas a los que he fichado están creando el sello.

Como en un equipo de fútbol, los jugadores crean el partido ¡y yo soy solo el entrenador! Siempre he sentido que la música llegaba a mis oídos con naturalidad y a través de este sello he tenido la oportunidad de trabajar con artistas increíbles.

Sapiens engloba también el trabajo de artistas visuales, diseñadores de sonido y directores de cine. ¿Cuál fue tu motivación para ello?

Todos los días vivo rodeado de directores de cine, actores y diseñadores de sonido y ahora mismo estoy creando unas cuantas bandas sonoras de películas que se estrenarán el año que viene. No puedo estar más contento con el resultado de mis propios vídeos musicales.

Los directores de cine con los que he trabajado han invertido mucho tiempo y se han arriesgado al límite, pero su iluminación, sus historias, sus castings y sus maneras de dirigir han sido increíbles.

También eres un consumado productor. ¿Cuál es tu fuente de inspiración para crear música?

Mi objetivo es que mi trabajo me proporcione placer y convertir el proceso de grabación en algo divertido, colaborando con muchos músicos y compartiendo energía positiva. ¿En qué proyectos estás trabajando ahora?

Acabo de lanzar mi álbum Drift, que me llevó cuatro años completar e incluye grabaciones de grandes voces y músicos. El álbum expresa mis placeres inocentes y ocultos y lo puedes escuchar tanto en casa como en la pista de baile. Incluye remezclas de algunos de los mejores DJs ¡y también es la inspiración para mi residencia en Blue Marlin Ibiza! ¿Qué sorpresas tienes preparadas para tu residencia en Blue Marlin Ibiza? ¡La idea es que todo el mundo to be Drifted, se deje llevar! Podrán escuchar música house increíble y bellas melodías. Ibiza está llena de gente de mente abierta y por eso quiero mezclar diferentes géneros de música. Artistas alucinantes compartirán los platos conmigo cada semana, ¡todos pinchando sus placeres ocultos! ¿Qué tiene de especial la energía de Blue Marlin Ibiza?

La ubicación y el trabajo realizado en Blue Marlin Ibiza a lo largo de los años, es increíble. ¡Es toda una institución! Nowadays it’s hard to believe, but black never used to play an impor tant role in the watchmaking world. At best misunderstood, at worst unwanted. The fault lies with the rules first laid down in the 16th centur y, the era when por table timekeeping instruments began to appear for the first time, all spor ting a light-coloured dial with dark numbers or indicators to honour the golden rule ensuring instant readability. This iron principle was also scrupulously obeyed from the early 20th centur y, when the wristwatch came into general use.

It was not until the 1970s that all these conventions were over turned at a stroke, an event inspired by one surprising individual - Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. Not content with having with having sketched out what was to become the 911, he also opened a design studio, focussing on watches, too – so long as they were black with white numbers, like the speedo in his spor ts cars. From then on, black became a must, an ambivalent style element expressing both extreme elegance and a spor ty elan. Its appearance is determined by the materials used and treatments applied – matt and textural when based on pure carbon, like in the Bvlgari Octo Tourbillon Automatic Carbon, marbled when expressed by Carbotech, a proprietar y compound chosen by Panerai for its Submersible Marina Militare 47 mm, velvety when associated with the high-impact ceramic used, for example, on the Boy-Friend Squelet te Edition Noire by Chanel, or enigmatic when it is the final result of the ADLC treatment (Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon), which can coat and strengthen all types of metal. This is the solution preferred

by Car tier, skilfully applied to the case and movement of the Santos de Car tier Skeleton Noctambule. Flawless models, whatever the technical content, thanks to a colour - black, the new black.

Hoy puede parecer inverosímil pero el color negro en el mundo de la relojería, nunca ha podido ganar su lugar. Incomprendido, en la mejor de las hipótesis. Indeseable, en las peores. La culpa la tienen las reglas codificadas de 1500, época en la cual comenzaron a aparecer estos instrumentos destinados a medir el tiempo llamados “portables” (hoy los defi nimos portátiles), que individuaban en una esfera clara con números o índices oscuros, la regla de oro de una lectura perfecta. Un principio inderogable que fue escrupulosamente respetado a partir de los comienzos del siglo pasado, con la llegada de los relojes de pulsera. Para poder ver cómo estas convenciones fueron echadas por tierra con un solo golpe, es necesario esperar hasta los años 70 del siglo pasado. Fue la intuición de una persona insospechable: Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, quien no se conformó con diseñar el coche que se convertiría en el 911, sino que decidió abrir un estudio de diseño, para dedicarse, entre otras cosas, a los relojes. Debían ser negros con números blancos, como los velocímetros de sus coches deportivos. A partir de ese momento el negro se convertirá en el color más usado. Un código ambivalente por su elevada elegancia junto a un desenfrenado estilo deportivo.

Su rendimiento cromático se refleja en los diferentes materiales y tratamientos. Opaco y material por ser la emanación del carbono puro, es el Bvlgari Octo Tourbillon Automatic Carbon. Marmóreo si se expresa a través del Carbotech, compuesto patentado y elegido por Panerai para su Submersible Marina Militare 47 mm.

Aparentemente aterciopelado si se lo asocia a la cerámica de alta resistencia, como enseña el Boy-Friend Squelette Edition Noire de Chanel. Indescifrable por el resultado fi nal del tratamiento Adlc (Amorphous Diamond-Like Carbon) que puede cubrir y reforzar cualquier tipo de metal. La solución preferida de Cartier, realizada magistralmente en la esfera y en el movimiento del Santos de Cartier Scheletrato Noctambule. Modelos impecables, más allá de la técnica, gracias a un color. Negro, el nuevo negro.

Are you tempted by the idea of a psychedelic journey to one of the Earth’s most incredible, evocative locations? Then explore the ravines and clefts of Antelope Canyon, east of Page, Arizona.

It’s another planet, a magical world that confronts visitors with a dazzling array of reflections from the red sandstone walls, sculpted by rain and wind, a matchless series of dramatic settings.

Protected by the Navajo nation, the canyon can be visited only in the company of authorised Navajo guides. It’s best to book a pickup in Page a day in advance, choosing from a range of tours for up to ten people – but remember that Indian reserve time is one hour ahead of the official Arizona time. The best seasons are autumn and spring.

The site is divided into two main areas - Upper (the most famous and with the largest number of visitors, 260 metres long and called by the Navajo Tsé bighánílíní, the place where water runs through the rocks) and Lower (more tiring to hike, with steps and changes in level). They are a few kilometres apart, separated by the Arizona highway Route AZ 98.

The best time to visit the canyon in all its splendour is around midday, when the light penetrates the clefts in the rock from almost directly overhead, creating a constantly-changing natural kaleidoscope, a spectacle of vivid flashes of reds, orange, yellows, pinks and gold.

¿Cuál es el viaje psicodélico en el lugar más increíble y sugestivo del planeta? Se encuentra entre las grietas y recovecos del Cañón del Antílope, en Arizona, al este de Page. Es otro planeta. Un mundo mágico que pinta la mirada de los visitantes con sus paredes de arenisca roja, esculpidas por la lluvia y el viento, que reflejan y devuelven espectros luminosos y escenográficos incomparables.

El Cañón está protegido por la tribu de navajos y podéis visitarlo acompañados por un guía navajo autorizado; en Page, podéis reservar la visita con un día de anticipación y elegir el tour con un máximo de diez personas. Debéis recordar que respecto a la hora oficial de Arizona, la reserva indígena tiene una diferencia horaria de una hora en adelante y las estaciones mejores para visitarlo son el otoño y la primavera.

El sitio está dividido en dos sectores principales: Upper, es el lugar más famoso y visitado, su longitud es de 260 metros y los nativos lo llaman Tsé bighánílíní, lugar donde el agua corre a través de las rocas y Lower, un recorrido más difícil con escaleras y desniveles.

Ambos están separados por un par de kilómetros por la carretera AZ98. El horario recomendado para admirar el cañón en su máximo esplendor, es cercano al mediodía, cuando la luz penetra verticalmente en las ranuras de la roca, creando un caleidoscopio natural que cambia continuamente, un espectáculo de destellos rojos, naranjas, amarillos, rosas y morados.

Antelope Canyon offers a unique experience, a plunge into a magical world where at every step the shifting light brushes the smooth, curved walls, leaving visitors asking themselves where the light is coming from, how it could shatter and refract into the myriad bright colours that fill the wondering gaze of the tourists, enchanted by such intense beauty. The name Antelope comes from the herds of pronghorn with large, backwardcurving antlers that used to roam wild in the area. The colours of their fleece echo those of the walls in the bright sunshine.

The narrow gorge has been carved out over millennia by the wind and violent floods caused by rainstorms. The water has excavated the sandstone walls, scraping the sand out of these narrow passageways, creating a path for itself and smoothing the sides, eventually moulding extraordinary shapes like the formations that resemble a standing bear about to charge, or the outline of Abraham Lincoln. The most interesting and amazing aspect, though, is the play of light that at some times of day projects a heart onto the walls, providing a backdrop for lovers to take the inevitable selfies.

Atravesar el Antelope Canyon es una experiencia única, os sumergís en un mundo mágico al rozar sus paredes lisas y curvas, donde la luz cambia a cada paso, sin comprender por dónde se filtra, cómo es posible que se multiplique y refleje miles de tonalidades intensas acompañando la mirada de estupor de los turistas encantados por su belleza. El nombre Antelope proviene de las manadas de antilocabras o berrendos (pronghorn), con grandes cuernos curvados hacia atrás, que antes vivían en estas zonas en estado salvaje. Los colores de su manto recuerdan las paredes inundadas por el sol. El estrecho desfiladero se ha formado durante millones de años por el viento y las lluvias intensas que causaban inundaciones imprevistas y violentas. Las arenas arrastradas por el agua en estos laberintos angostos, fueron excavando las paredes de arenisca, abriendo un camino, alisando sus bordes y esculpiendo formas extraordinarias, como aquella que se asemeja a un oso en pie a punto de atacar o el perfil del presidente Abraham Lincoln. Pero lo que más genera estupor e interés son los haces de luces, que en determinadas horas del día, se cuelan en las rocas y reflejan un corazón, donde los enamorados se hacen el inevitable selfie.
