marks our 70th birthday!

Over the last 70 years, we have added a range of landbased subjects to our Agriculture courses, including Animal Management and Equine, plus complementary subjects such as Sport and Floristry. All these courses tap into the resources our land has to offer us.

We are dedicated to delivering first-class education, and we do this by combining innovative technologies, industry specialist tutors, real working environments and partnerships with leading employers. Our focus is to develop the practical skills and knowledge needed to support your success in your future education and career – growing your potential for a sustainable future in every sense of the word!

Don’t worry if you aren’t a good chef, all our rooms are half board, so you get a £1,000 food card to spend in our food outlets. If you qualify for our Residential Bursary, we may be able to help you with the cost too!

From our wardens to the domestic team, you’ll get to know our lovely staff too. Our wardens are available throughout the night, and we have 24/7 security to make sure you feel happy and safe.

We also have a dedicated Activities Coordinator who will organise fun events on and off campus, from meeting our animals to trips to Hull Fair and go-karting. They’ll work with you to make sure whatever is planned fits with your interests and availability.

Get Involved

There’s plenty to keep you busy at Bishop Burton College.

Why not get involved and have an influence on your college experience by joining our Student Association. We have a range of sports clubs at varying levels, from rugby to clay pigeon shooting, which are a great way to make friends. If playing team sports isn’t your thing, you can always cheer on our teams during their Wednesday afternoon matches or head to the gym instead. You’ll get discounted gym membership (or free membership if you live on campus!), giving you access to fitness classes such as yoga.

We deliver various sports and wellbeing lunchtime sessions throughout the academic year too, offering a variety to suit everyone. A recreational timetable is available, with options changing every term.

It’s not all sport though...

Sustainable Futures

From small steps to larger projects, we are working on multiple ways of supporting our carbon reduction targets. Here are just six things we’re doing to be more sustainable:

Aiming for a Carbon net-zero commercial farm, by 2030

We are currently on track to meet our ambitious target, working with partners such as Agrii, White Rose Foods Ltd and Stabiliser Cattle Co. From feeding only homegrown products to our livestock to adopting new precision agriculture technologies, there’s lots going on.

Eco-friendly food packaging

We have switched our disposable food packaging to eco-friendly alternatives.

Flood defences

We have a balancing lake that acts as a flood defence for the rural villages downstream. It also features as a water jump for our British Eventing Horse Trials!

Our grounds maintenance team is working towards becoming carbon net zero, with sports ground maintenance now

75% off grid!

We’re capturing solar and wind energy to power our grounds maintenance equipment, including our robotic mower, chainsaws, leaf blowers and trimmers.

Sustainability skills for employment

As a student with us, you’ll have the opportunity to gain new qualifications in sustainability as part of your chosen course. This enhanced knowledge of sustainability practices will be invaluable in your career.

How You’ll Learn

Everyone learns in different ways, which is why we use a range of teaching methods to make sure that you are ready for your next steps, whether that’s going on to higher level study or to start your career.

You’ll make sure your theoretical knowledge is spot on in classroom sessions, before gaining practical experience on and off campus. Mandatory industry placements are integrated into some of our courses, but we encourage all students to take part in work experience and extra-curricular activities to deepen their knowledge, experience and skill sets.

Contact Time and Independent Study

Most of our full-time courses involve three days on campus, which includes time for independent study as well as lectures, seminars, on campus work experience, practical sessions and tutorials. You will also need to factor in time for independent study, at home or on campus.

Supporting Your Learning

We want you to feel confident and comfortable at every stage of your education. We offer a range of support, from helping you to understand assignment briefs to specialist support for people with diagnosed additional needs. This includes support with tools such as visual stress equipment (such as overlays), dictaphones and speech-to-text software.

Employer Links, Placements and Study Tours

Our team works hard to maintain and build employer links and to gain funding to give you access to once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

At Bishop Burton, you’ll have access to a whole host of opportunities to learn from employers, whether that’s through our guest speaker programme, industry placements in the UK, or work experience all over the globe.

From Cranswick Foods to Baillie Haylage, Humberside Police to Springboard Nursery and Pre-School; we have some amazing relationships with local and national employers, who provide talks, demonstrations and work placements, where possible.

Funding from organisations such as the Turing Scheme has allowed our students to undertake a wide range of activities and placements abroad. From tracking jackals and elephants on foot using telemetry in the South African bush, to surfing masterclasses in Sydney and exploring ancient burial tombs in Carmona, our students have been exposed to new cuisines, new cultures and amazing experiences.

English andMaths

To make sure you’re ready for your next step, whether that’s higher levels of study or employment, if you are aged 16-18 and didn’t achieve grade 4 in GCSE English and Maths you will also take dedicated classes to prepare you to re-take your GCSE or Functional Skills exams. These classes are delivered alongside your course. You’ll also have access to support sessions and revision workshops.

Health and Wellbeing

We don’t just want you to achieve academically and professionally – we will support you to be as happy and healthy as possible, in body and mind.

Our friendly Health and Wellbeing team offers chaplaincy, counselling, sexual health clinics, and much more!

Course Costs

If you are 18 or under when you start your course, you won’t have to pay any tuition fees.

If you are 19 or over, you may still be able to study for free, based upon your age, previous qualifications, employment status and income. Your personal circumstances will need to be assessed to confirm whether a fee applies but, even if it does, you will be able to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan which you will only start to pay back when your income is above the repayment threshold.

Depending on your course, there may be equipment and clothing you need. During our Open Events, our academic team will run you through everything that’s needed for the course you’re interested in. In addition, all full-time students must pay an annual £70 campus fee, which is non-refundable. This contributes towards enrichment activities, such as the costs of trips and visits.

Our Student Services team are always on hand to give information and advice on financial issues, including grants, fees, student loans, money management and bursaries. Our Courses

Here at Bishop Burton College, our specialist, technical courses have been specifically designed to give you the practical skills and underpinning knowledge you’ll need to progress to higher level study or to go straight into work.

Where should you start?

We offer a range of different course levels across all our subject areas to suit your needs and previous qualifications. We know that understanding the different levels can be confusing which is why we’ve listed them overleaf for you to understand the differences.

Often the main differences between our courses is the awarding body we use, such as BTEC, City & Guilds or Pearson. Regardless of the awarding body, the levels are equivalent to each other.

Each of our courses has specific entry requirements that vary depending on the level and subject you are wanting to apply for. These are subject to change, so we recommend that you check our website for the most up-to-date course listings and entry requirements.

Level 1

A step up from Entry Level. These one-year courses are the equivalent of GCSE grade 3 or D to E.

Level 2

Level 2 courses are the equivalent of GCSE grades 4 or A* to C. As well as vocational courses, you can also choose to study a Level 2 apprenticeship with us.

Level 3

These are equivalent to A Levels and can be studied over one or two years. They have various pathways and we will help you to decide the right one, including progression to the right route to collect UCAS points.

You can also study a Level 3 apprenticeship with us, though you won’t collect UCAS points with these.

T Levels (Level 3)

These new two-year qualifications, which launched in Sept 2020, are the equivalent of three A Levels. You spend 80% of your time at college and 20% on an industry placement.

Access to Higher Education (Level 3)

If you are aged 19 or over and want to return to education, these courses will prepare you to study at degree level.

University Level Programmes

If you’re ready to take your studies to the next level, University Centre Bishop Burton (UCBB) offers a wide range of university level programmes, from HNCs to master’s degrees.

T Levels are a qualification after GCSE that will take your future to the next level. They are the next generation of vocational learning, offering the perfect balance between classroom learning and real-world experience.

Equivalent to three A Levels and giving UCAS points for entry to university, a T Level focuses on vocational skills and can help you into skilled employment, higher level study or apprenticeships. Bishop Burton has led the way in these exciting new qualifications and our successful track record means we are ideally placed to help you to the next level.

Earn While You Learn

As an apprentice, you will get a true hands-on experience. Most of your time will be spent on-the-job, with dedicated time for off-the-job training. You will be paid and will receive holidays and other employee rights. This is a great opportunity to start your career, change career, or upskill for future career progression.

Prepare for a degree with us

Are you aged 19+? Have you been thinking about studying for a degree or another university-level programme?

If you don’t have ‘traditional’ qualifications, such as a BTEC or A Levels, or have been out of education for some time, an Access to Higher Education course could be the perfect solution for you. They are intensive, one-year courses designed to get you ready to study at university. The courses combine relevant academic subject knowledge with the techniques you need to study at university level, from research methods to academic writing and referencing.

We offer the following specialist Access to Higher Education Diplomas:

All of these courses are validated by the Cambridge Access Validating Agency (CAVA)

Do universities accept Access courses?

Lots of universities accept Access to Higher Education qualifications, but we recommend you double-check with the university that you’re interested in.

The UCAS tariff points you would gain depend on the grade you receive - anywhere between 48 and 144 points.
