Five ways we’re working to be more sustainable: Solar and wind energy

Protecting our world for a sustainable future

Our grounds maintenance will soon be carbon zero! We’re capturing solar and wind energy to power our grounds maintenance equipment, including our chainsaws, leaf blowers, trimmers and robotic mower. Keep an eye out for Lionel Pitchy, our battery-operated line machine!

We have installed, and are using for research, an anaerobic digestor that breaks down organic matter to produce bio-gas and biofertiliser for use as fuel on campus.

We are champions of sustainable farming solutions, both on our commercial farm at Bishop Burton and through our teaching. We have set ourselves an ambitious target to reach carbon net-zero by 2030 –ten years ahead of NFU’s aim for farming nationally. Our key focus is precision agriculture and how we can help develop and support more sustainable farming practices from an economic and environmental point of view. We are dedicated to using the most forwardlooking agricultural technologies to transform food production, reduce emissions, environmental damage, waste and soil erosion. As part of the Yorkshire and Humber Institute for Technology, more than £1.7m has recently been invested to develop our Centre for Precision Agriculture. This is a significant regional hub to support our students and the local farming community to be able to implement precision technologies in industry. Find out more about
