The Istanbul Foundation for culture and Arts was founded in 1973 by fourteen company executives under the leader ship of Nejat F. Eczacıbaşı, who had concieved the idea of a festival of the arts, similar to those held annually at certain times of the year in a number of European cities, to be held in Istanbul, a metropolis that for centuries had formed a bridge between Europe and Asia and the first Festival was held between 15 June -15 July 1973, a date which coincided with the fiftieth anniversary of the Turkish Republic.

From its first inception the Istanbul Music Festival has aimed at including in its programmes the finest examples of artistic creativity in the fields of music (orchestral concerts, chamber music, recitals and traditional music), classical ballet and contemporary dance, opera, folklore. Its acceptance as member of the European Association of Festivals in 1977, on its first application, is a proof of its achieving the high standards of quality it had set itself. The 24th International Istanbul Music Festival will be held between 10 June 10 July 1996. P
