Cuba's southern beauty

Located in the center of Cuba, the Caribbean has brought Cienfuegos an ocean of fortunes. Its cultural, patrimonial and marine richness have made it a tourist destination for vacations. La Perla del Sur, como románticamente se conoce a Cienfuegos, tiene peculiaridades que la han marcado desde su nacimiento. Es entre todas las ciudades cubanas, la única fundada por emigrantes de otra nación, siendo Cuba colonia española. Su establecimiento como villa, se remonta al siglo XIX, cuando colonos franceses se asentaron en la zona y la nombraron Fernandina de Jagua, para honrar al Rey Fernando VII y por fidelidad al linaje nativo del poblado, antes habitado por indios taínos.

La Perla del Sur (The Pearl of the South), as Cienfuegos is romantically known, has features that have distinguished it since its creation. Among all Cuban cities, it is the only one founded by emigrants from another country, since Cuba was a colony of Spain. Its foundation as a town dates back to the 19th century, when French settlers arrived in the area and named it Fernandina de Jagua, to honor King Fernando VII and out of loyalty to the then local lineage of the town, formerly inhabited by Taino indigenous people.

Turismo de ciudad

Un buen recorrido comienza en el parque José Martí, antigua Plaza de Armas de la villa, erigida justo donde, cuentan los historiadores, se fundó Cienfuegos. Partiendo de este importante punto citadino, la ruta continúa por la vía peatonal hasta llegar a una bella alameda, símbolo de la ciudad: el Paseo del Prado, el más largo de su tipo en Cuba, atravesándolo hay mucho que conocer: la estatua del Benny, el sonero mayor de la isla y el malecón cienfueguero. Al finalizar el Paseo del Prado, se alcanza la zona residencial y recreativa de Punta Gorda, una de las más antiguas y hermosas. Esta península que se adentra en la bahía termina en La Punta, zona declarada Monumento Nacional, por sus casonas junto al mar y otras impresionantes edificaciones, entre las que se destacan, por su singularidad constructiva, el Palacio de Valle -lugar de leyendas y joya de la arquitectura cubana- y el Club Náutico de Cienfuegos.

City Tourism

A good tour begins in the park José Martí, the old Plaza de Armas of the town, built right where, according to historians, Cienfuegos was founded. Starting from this important point of the city, the route continues along the pedestrian street reaching a beautiful boulevard, symbol of the city: Paseo del Prado, the longest of its kind in Cuba, through which there is much to discover: the statue of Benny, the greatest Cuban son musician and the Cienfuegos seawall. At the end of Paseo del Prado, visitors reach the residential and recreational area of Punta Gorda, one of the oldest and most beautiful. This peninsula that runs into the bay ends in La Punta, an area declared a National Monument, for its large houses by the sea and other impressive buildings, among which Palacio de Valle - a place of legends and a jewel of Cuban architecture - and the Cienfuegos Nautical Club stand out for their singular construction.

Cienfuegos y el mar

Cienfuegos es una urbe típicamente marítima. Posee una hermosa y amplísima bahía y sus playas son fascinantes lugares para practicar el snorkling y el buceo. Sus fondos, bien conservados y abundantes en especies tropicales poseen, además, magníficas condiciones para la inmersión. La mayor parte del año, la temperatura del mar oscila entre 24 y 30 grados Celsius, siempre agradable para una buena zambullida. Además, la transparencia de las aguas es un privilegio, a tal punto que, incluso el fondo marino permite una visibilidad horizontal de 25 metros, condición ideal para practicar la fotografía subacuática. Entre sus playas destacan Faro Luna, El Inglés, Guajimico y Rancho Luna, todas óptimas para el buceo y la aventura. Rancho Luna, ofrece entre sus asombros, el famoso coral de columna Notre Dame, de seis metros de altura y bautizado así por su semejanza estructural con la famosa catedral parisina. Mucho, muchísimo hay por ver y disfrutar en esta provincia del sur de Cuba: ciudad, cultura, historia, náutica, naturaleza. Desde La Habana es fácil llegar, también desde Trinidad. Cienfuegos and the sea

Cienfuegos is a traditional coastal city. It has a beautiful and very wide bay and its beaches are fascinating places for snorkeling and diving. Its seabed, well preserved and abundant in tropical species, also has magnificent conditions for diving. Most of the year, the sea temperature ranges between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius, always pleasant for a good dive. In addition, crystal clear waters are a privilege, to such an extent that even the seabed allows a horizontal visibility of 25 meters, an ideal environment to do underwater photography. Among its beaches are Faro Luna, El Inglés, Guajimico and Rancho Luna, all optimal for diving and adventure. Rancho Luna, offers among its surprises, the famous Notre Dame column coral, six meters high and so named for its structural resemblance to the famous cathedral of Paris. There is so much to see and enjoy in this southern Cuban province: city, culture, history, nautical activities and nature. From Havana it is easy to get there, also from Trinidad.
