A jewel of Cuban architecture

Mármoles y alabastros italianos, herrería española, cerámicas venecianas y granadinas, bronce y cristales de diversas partes del mundo hicieron una excelente mezcla con los únicos materiales cubanos utilizados: la preciosa madera caoba y el intelecto del arquitecto local Pablo Donato Carbonell, autor de otras bellas mansiones cienfuegueras, entre las que destaca el Palacio Ferrer, hoy Centro de la Cultura cienfueguera. Quienes gusten de admirar y regodearse en el arte, aquí podrán disfrutar de una síntesis sorprendente de estilos. En la entrada domina el gótico, con sus cristales de colores que hacen irradiar la luz hacia el interior. El comedor, uno de los salones más elegantes de la casa, tiene influencia mudéjar y, dicen los estudiosos, que es una delicada imitación del famoso Patio de los Leones, de la Alhambra en Granada. En la sala de música, las artes decorativas rinden honor al estilo Luis XV. El antiguo recibidor de la casa, de estilo Imperio, propio del neoclasicismo, muestra el artesonado en oro, zócalos de mármol rosado, aplicaciones de bronce y piso de mármol blanco.

Italian marble and alabaster, Spanish ironwork, Venetian and Grenadian ceramics, bronze and glasses from different parts of the world made an excellent mix with the only Cuban materials used: the precious mahogany wood and the mind of local architect Pablo Donato Carbonell, creator of other beautiful mansions in Cienfuegos, among which stands out Palacio Ferrer, nowadays Centro de la Cultura in Cienfuegos. Those who like to admire and enjoy art can appreciate a surprising synthesis of styles. The entrance is predominantly Gothic, with its colored glass that makes the light radiate into the interior. The dining room, one of the most elegant rooms in the house, has a Mudejar influence and, scholars say, is a delicate imitation of the famous Patio de los Leones, in the Alhambra in Granada. In the music room, the decorative arts honor Louis XV style. The old foyer of the house, with its Empire style representative of neoclassicism, shows the coffered ceiling in gold, pink marble baseboards, bronze fittings and white marble floor.

Cada espacio tiene su encanto propio y en todos hay detalles que sorprenden: paredes estucadas, elegantes pinturas, pisos compuestos por mosaicos de múltiples colores, techos repujados jarrones de porcelana. El palacete es un derroche de riquezas. La vista externa también sobrecoge por su versatilidad constructiva. Su aspecto evidencia, igualmente, la fusión de disímiles estilos artísticos y constructivos. Al frente, dos mitológicas esfinges, con actitud enigmática, custodian la escalinata que antecede la entrada. Y en lo alto, lo más sobresaliente son sus tres torres, que permiten distinguir el palacio desde lejos. Una de ellas con características gótico romanas; la segunda de influencia hindú y la tercera, un alminar de estilo árabe. En la azotea luce su encanto una explanada desde donde se tiene una complaciente vista de la bahía cienfueguera.

Each area has its own charm and in all of them there are surprising details: stuccoed walls, elegant paintings, multicolored mosaic floors, embossed ceilings and porcelain vases. The palace is a wealth of riches. The external view is also striking for its constructive variety. Its design is also the result of the fusion of various artistic and constructive styles. In the front, two mythological sphinxes, with enigmatic pose, guard the staircase that leads to the entrance. And at the top, three towers stand out, allowing the palace to be spotted from afar. One of them with Roman Gothic characteristics; the second of Hindu style and the third, a minaret of Arab style. On the roof, there is a charming terrace with a pleasant view of the bay of Cienfuegos.

Símbolo de Cienfuegos, el Palacio de Valle fue declarado Monumento Local en 1990. Su historia, sus valores arquitectónicos y el ambiente tan acogedor que lo identifica, lo han convertido en legítimo patrimonio y visita oportuna. Actualmente, en la mansión se hacen fiestas culturales y en sus áreas, el visitante puede disfrutar de esa magia que solo trasmiten los lugares exclusivos.
