Bialik Rising Star 11

Page 1

PROGRAM TUESDAY 22 AUGUST 2023, 7PM ALEXANDER THEATRE, MONASH CLAYTON

PRINCIPAL’S NOTES

Whilst I Like To Move It was originally an American solo project by Erick Morillo with ragga vocals by a Trinidad and Tobago rapper Mark Quashie, it is most likely better known now as the Sasha Baron Cohen version in the animation film Madagascar.

We may not have Sasha Baron Cohen or Erick Morillo, but we will be movin’ it tonight with six Junior pieces featuring nine performers, eight intermediate pieces (eleven performers) and four senior pieces and performers. With some special guests and a combined piece, we can rock like it is 1993.

Supported by an incredible and dedicated range of musicians (including some of our competitors themselves), Bialik Rising Star 11 is once again a testament to the talent and hard work of our students, the dedication and vision of our teaching staff and the overall vibe and groove of our Bialik family.

Kol HaKavod to our performers, front-of-house, backstage, hosts, logistics, coordination and leadership teams in putting together another feat of talent, inclusion, musicality and fun.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Eleven years and still going strong, Bialik Rising Star continues to give not only our emerging singers, but also our instrumental students, incredible performance opportunities.

We live in the shadow of the ‘one in a hundred years’ covid pandemic and our world is slowly getting back on its feet. What better way to celebrate the return to normal than with a theme that gets us back on our feet, gets the blood pumping through our veins and brings us not only the joy of classic tunes by music legends, but even the greater joy of gathering together to celebrate the art of music.

The songs you will hear tonight span many decades and are as interesting and varied as the people that sang them and made them famous. Since the dawn of time, humans have moved their bodies to music. Whether Disco or Motown, Folktronica or House, Northern Soul or Dance-Pop, Tropical or Latin American, you will hear songs tonight that will make you want to move! With artists represented like The Jacksons, Michael Bublé, Amy Winehouse, Donna Summer, Stevie Wonder, Meghan Trainor and Justin Timberlake to name but a few, the evening is full of wonderfully crafted melodies that will have you tripping down memory lane – some of those memories more recent and some much older. We like to move it and hope you do too!

Enjoy the night.

JUDGES

Jackson Howe

Originally from the Sunshine State, Jackson trained at the Australian Dance Performance Institute where he completed an Advanced Diploma in Musical Theatre and Dance.

In 2018, he moved to Melbourne to pursue his dream of a career in Music Theatre and began studying at the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA). Whilst at the VCA, Jackson performed in ‘On the Town’ (dir. Adam Mitchell), ‘Morning Melodies 2019’ at Hamer Hall (dir. Jayde Kirchert). In 2020 Jackson performed in ‘Mongrel’ (dir. Maude Davey), featured in the ensemble of ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’ (dir. Jason Langley) and played a leading role, Joe’s Dad, in the musical ‘Our House’ (dir. Tyran Parke). In 2023, Jackson played the role, Linus, in the musical ‘You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown’. If you can’t find Jackson singing on stage, then he’s probably teaching or playing a game of footy.

Jake Fehily

Jake Fehily is an actor, singer and multi-instrumentalist. As a teenager, he starred in two seasons of the ABC3’s Logie nominated skit show You’re Skitting Me, and was featured on Prank Patrol and in Tim Winton’s feature film, The Turning.

Jake made his stage debut in StageArt’s production of The Full Monty (StageArt), followed by the lead role in Lin Manuel Miranda’s 21 Chump Street (Pursued by Bear). As a musician, Jake has performed at several prestigious Melbourne venues and made his music festival debut at St Kilda Festival. The following year, he was invited to sing for Stephen Sondheim as part of the Lobby Project at the New York City Centre. In 2019, Jake made his professional stage debut as Augustus Gloop in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory: The New Musical (GFO/Warner Bros/Craig Donnel). Most recently, Jake has written and developed a new stage musical-comedy titled “The Matchmaker” with a full scale production planned for 2024.

Dr Sue Arney

Dr Sue Arney is a Lecturer in Teacher Education at The University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Education where she teaches music education into the Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary Master of Teaching courses. Having originally trained as a secondary classroom music, instrumental and ensemble teacher, Sue has since worked in a variety of settings from early years to tertiary in both regional and metropolitan Victoria.

Sue is regularly engaged to run workshops in schools, music programs and conferences that encourage strategic planning, team building, establishing and strengthening music programs and developing innovative curriculum. She appears regularly as guest conductor and clinician at state and national music camps, regional workshops, music festivals, schools and various youth music organisations.

Sue is delighted to be here this evening to be part of this fabulous event, and to join the Bialik community in celebrating the joy of young people performing and making music.
