At the heart of PJA Summer Discovery...

are experienced teachers and staff creating their classes, based on topics they are passionate about, and sharing them with your children. Summer Discovery instructors strive to provide quality enrichment programming that is fun and challenging, with the goal of providing new learning for students.

General Information

OUR PROGRAM

• Program Hours: 9:00 am - 1:00 pm. (Pre-Care and Extended-Day are available)

• All children must be the designated age for the program and potty trained.

• PJA does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national and ethnic origin.

REGISTRATION

Registration opens to the general public at 12:00 pm on Wednesday, February 23 at pjaproud.org/summer. PJA families receive priority registration.

LUNCH AND SNACK

Bring a vegetarian snack and lunch (no meat, poultry, or shellfish) and a water bottle.

PAYMENT/REFUND POLICY

Credit Card transactions will incur a flex fee of 2.73%. To avoid this fee, consider using (ACH) Bank Account Transfer. In the event of a class cancellation, PJA will make every effort to direct your child to another program or issue a full refund. There are no refunds after June 1 except in the case of a class cancellation. Refunds incur a $30 processing fee.

SUMMER DISCOVERY PRE-CARE

Pre-Care (age 4 and up): 8:00 - 9:00 am

Cost: $65 per week (pre-registration required).

EXTENDED-DAY

PJA Extended-Day (age 4 only): 1:00 - 5:30 pm

Cost: $285 per week (pre-registration required).

MJCC Extended-Day (ages 5-12) is available through MJCC Summer Day Camp at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Visit oregonjcc.org/summerdiscovery for all the details. Summer Discovery staff will escort students to the MJCC at 1:00 pm.

Leapfrog engages young learners in an exploration of math, science, and literacy activities that are hands-on and inquiry-based. These classes nurture your child’s curiosity, allow imaginations to flourish and encourage a love for learning.

Stepping Stone

Entering Grades 1 - 3

Stepping Stone inspires children to explore new and exciting topics that incorporate inquiry-based activities, global themes and project-based work. Students will form friendships with other learners who share their passion for the same topic.

Mosaic

Entering Grades 2 - 5

Mosaic brings together a broader range of students in an effort to foster and encourage a patchwork of new ideas and lines of inquiry. With mixed-age groups, students learn from their instructor and from one another.

Soaring

Entering Grades 3 - 6

Soaring challenges learners to broaden their thinking through in-depth study of topics offered by our talented instructors. Classes will be taught with inquiry in mind, allowing students to express themselves creatively.

Unleash your true colors at PJA's Art Oasis. Whether young artists love painting, origami, drawing, or creating a complex masterpiece, this is the place to let their creative spirits soar. This fun and inspiring class encourages artists to explore new mediums and techniques, while they build confidence and have a blast.

CANINE CHARACTERS

Bluey, Gromit, Snoopy and more. Get up close and personal with some of your favorite dogs from comics, books, and cartoons. Learn to draw them, make cool crafts and even invent your own new puppy pal. A dog will visit the class so give a woof!

BACKYARD & HOUSEHOLD SCIENCE

Wonder, question and experiment with friends in PJA's backyard! Experiments you will do will all relate to things you may find in your house or outside in your own backyard. If you’ve ever wondered how to make soda, how to see over a fence, or how that thing makes that noise, then this is the class for you! All food made is kosher and vegetarian.

BEADING

Explore the many different types of crafts and activities created with beads like jewelry, decorations, keychains, art, and more! Spend the week using many varieties and sizes of beads, and creating lots of fun projects to keep, gift, or share! Beading is a great way to unleash our creativity, practice our fine motor skills, hone our ability to stay organized, and practice planning ahead by creating patterns. All skill levels are welcome!

BOARD GAME BASH!

Set the board, draw your cards, roll the dice, and dive in! This class blends strategy, teamwork, and creativity as students explore a variety of classic and modern games. CAN YOU SOLVE IT? PUZZLES & MORE

From word puzzles to math puzzles to shape puzzles to brainteasers, there are limitless amounts of puzzles to grow and stretch our brains! Compare, create, solve, and invent a wide variety of puzzles, including magic squares, tangrams, Rubik’s cubes, rebus, jigsaw, and more! Each day, we will add to our portfolio of puzzles and build our very own puzzle books to bring home at the end of the week!

CHESS: MAKE YOUR MOVE

Chess is the greatest board game! Chess is thousands of years old and still one of the most popular games around. Learn the basics from pieces to positions and a little bit about the history of the game. Students will go home with a chess board of their own. All levels are welcome.

Welcome to the Doodle Club! Practice your sketching skills and learn to draw original/ existing characters, pictures, and more! Go home with a sketchbook and artist's pencils and more confidence in your doodle abilities.

FLAG FOOTBALL & FOOTBALL HISTORY

Come find out why football is the most popular sport in the USA! We will learn some football history, look at how plays are designed and executed, and, of course, we will play some ball. Students will have a chance to try out playing different positions and designing their own plays.

Dig into a world of adventure with us as we uncover the wonders of the Earth. Each junior geologist will start their own rock collection or organize their existing one. WINTER IN JULY: A CROCHET ADVENTURE

Embrace the coziness of winter in the summer months as we learn the art of crocheting scarves and hats! Crafters will crochet their way to making stylish, warm accessories while having fun in the sun. Students will end the week with their very own beginner crochet set that includes a hook, stitch markers, patterns, extra yarn, and a yarn needle.

Join the Dragon Team!

Ages 7 - 15

Are you ready to take on a leadership role and make a difference? Would you like to help and inspire younger students while gaining valuable skills? If so, we’d love to have you on our Dragon Team! As a Dragon Team member, you’ll join classroom activities and develop leadership skills while assisting instructors and younger students.

Here’s how to get started:

• Choose a younger age group and a class topic that excites you. Note: Contracted classes are not available (LEGO/Coding/Robotics)

• When registering online, look for class titles that include “Dragon Team” (e.g., Fairytale Mix-Up/Dragon Team, ages 7-15).

• Register and pay.

Every member receives a t-shirt and a certificate of participation. We can’t wait to see you this summer!

POKEMON ENGINEERING

WITH LEGO© (ages 5-8)

Calling all Pokémon trainers! With the Pokémon Championship approaching, join us as we build and catch our favorite Pokémon, rescue Pikachu from Team Rocket, take a ride on the S.S. Anne to uncover rare and mystic Pokémon, and battle to see who will hold the title of Pokémon Master.

JURASSIC ENGINEERING

WITH LEGO© (ages 7-12)

Dive into the world of dinosaurs in this LEGO®-powered STEM course! You will apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills to design and build secure habitats for herbivorous dinosaurs and discover elusive species. Collaborate, innovate, and deepen your understanding of biology, engineering, and prehistoric ecosystems, all while bringing the Jurassic world to life.

Build and program robots in this introductory Robotics class using the LEGO® Spike Prime® system. Learn basic programming skills using a simple and visual block coding system to grasp new and diverse coding challenges. Build robots using motors, sensors and lights that will make for a fun experience that incorporates both building with LEGO® and coding.

ROBOTICS: INTRO (ages 8-12)

Learn the basics of programming a robot and how to use code along with hardware to open up so many possibilities with technology. Through a block-based, visual programming platform, learn introductory concepts, such as code structure, variables, and loops to complete robot mission challenges. Note: Additional $10 added maintenance fee for the use of robots.

Venture into the world of Minecraft while learning to build and program robots in this introductory Robotics class using the LEGO® Spike Prime® system. Learn basic programming skills while traveling through biomes, harvesting resources, and battling the Ender Dragon. Work in pairs to build LEGO® based projects incorporating motors, sensors and lights.

SCRATCH: INTRO TO GAME DEVELOPMENT (ages 8-12)

Learn coding using Scratch, a fun dragand-drop coding environment and practice coding fundamentals like Variables, Loops, and Conditionals while designing characters, creating scenes, and adding sounds. Build exciting games, stories, and animation projects, including Pet and Ball, Shark and Fish, and Snowman Maze.

ADRIANNE SHARROCK

Adrianne Sharrock has taught Pre-K at PJA for almost 20 years! She is delighted to bring her passion for role playing games and storytelling to Summer Discovery each year. Her favorite DnD class to play is druid and her favorite spell is Misty Step!

BEN STOLBERG

CODING WITH KIDS

Coding With Kids has been on a mission to bring children the highest quality coding education no matter where they are, since 2013. Every child deserves an opportunity to learn this fun and lucrative skill that gives access to quality employment without migrating.

ELLIOTT SAUNDERS

Elliott Saunders has worked as the PJA PE Teacher and After-school athletics coach for the past 4 years. He brings his love for sports, outdoors, and energetic attitude to whatever class he may be teaching.

RAE HILL

Rae Hill is a teacher and artist who focuses on repurposing materials in their work. They advocate for the autistic and queer communities and is deeply passionate about inclusion and self-expression.

Ben Stolberg has worked at PJA for the last three years across various grade levels. He thinks learning should be fun and active. Ben loves to learn about new topics with his students and find a way to challenge each individual at an appropriate level.

BESS NATION

Bess Nation aspires to foster an environment that encourages exploration, creativity, and confidence through discovery. After graduating from PSU, she taught abroad and in the US. She loves reading, cooking, drawing, cute cats, rockhounding, and being a mom.

Cody Hall has a Master’s degree in Social Work and a B.A, in Theater Arts. She has worked at PJA and Summer Discovery for over four years. Cody loves all things Disney and Marvel.

Hannah Guglielmana is an Instructional Aid at PJA and works at the Odyssey After School Program. Hannah will graduate from PSU In June with a bachelor’s in Psychology and Family Studies. Hannah loves teaching kids about history, nature, and theatre!

SOPHIA WHYTE

Sophia Whyte is serving her second year as assistant to the Summer Discovery Director. During the school year, she works as an Instructional Aid in PJA’s 2rd grade, where she helps students grow, learn, and be their best selves.

Daravahn Insixiengmay has worked at PJA for 11 years. She looks forward to working for the PJA Discovery Aftercare Program this year. Most importantly, she wants to have fun and a wonderful summer with the 4-year-olds.

Celinda Llanez is the PJA Summer Discovery Director and PJA Kindergarten teacher. She has worked at PJA for 21 years and began the Summer Discovery Program in 2010. She looks forward to seeing all of the learning and projects.

CLAUDIA SNEATHEN

Claudia Sneathen works as a 3’s floater at PJA during the school year. She has been playing Zimbabwean marimba for 19 years and loves a chance to teach music.

EITAN MILLER FEDER

Eitan Miller Feder is a PJA alum and a senior at Grant High School. He has been playing Dungeons and Dragons for ten years and has been running his own camps for four. He loves 3d printing, Jewish text study, and playing with his dog Orzo.

Livy Knight has worked at Portland Jewish Academy since 2023. She loves helping kids discover their passions and dreams while creating a joyful, supportive space where every child feels seen, valued, and free to be themselves.

Sean Bartlett is PJA’s Garden & Social-Emotional Learning teacher. He enjoys being outside growing food & flowers, and hanging out with his dogs and goats. He is very excited to explore PJA’s garden this summer with you!

SUSANNA PERRIN

Ellen Kipnis has taught for over 30 years, 20 of those at PJA. She believes in learning through hands-on activities and curiosity as a guide to gaining new knowledge. She loves children and her goal is to make a positive difference in all children’s lives.

Lucy Leo is in her 9th year of teaching 2nd grade at Portland Jewish Academy. She loves to read, crochet, and spend time with her dogs Fozzie and Thelma. She is looking forward to another year of exploring, learning, and crafting with you at Summer Discovery!

PLAY-WELL

Play-well provides project-based programs for children ages 4-15 using LEGO©. Kids enjoy exploring fundamental engineering and physics principles as they build elaborate objects, structures, and vehicles.

Susanna Perrin taught at PJA for 22 years. She loves the integration of story and art with learning. Susanna enjoys reading, hiking, creating her own art & stories and spending time with her family and pets.

Tammy Thompson has worked at PJA almost 2 years in the 3's class. She had her first experience with Summer Discovery last summer and is excited to be back. She enjoys hands-on learning, and thinks kids should have fun and enjoy what they do.
