PORTLAND JEWISH ACADEMY Annual Report 2024-25
Portland Jewish Academy provides an academically rich, values-based education that supports the social, emotional, and spiritual growth of children from infants through eighth grade. As a community day school that welcomes students and families of all backgrounds, PJA inspires Jewish engagement and cultivates a sense of belonging in a welcoming and inclusive community.
September 2025
Elul 5785
Dear Friends of PJA,
We are pleased to present Portland Jewish Academy’s Annual Report for the 2024-25/5785 fiscal year. This was an extremely successful year, thanks in large part to the philanthropic support of the extended PJA community. This report celebrates many of our school’s achievements over the past year, each of which is a testament to your generosity and partnership.
Among our accomplishments last year was the completion of a new PJA Strategic Plan. The process engaged all school constituencies. We’ve framed this report to highlight our key strategic areas of focus for the next three to five years. As we implement this plan, the new initiatives and programs will further strengthen teaching and learning, Jewish life, community engagement, and long-term sustainability. We’re excited to have you join us on that journey. Even as we innovate, the essence of a PJA education remains unchanged. Our strategic planning process reaffirmed our commitment to our school middot (values); our identity as a pluralistic, inclusive community Jewish Day School; our mission to support the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth of children; and our vision to empower our graduates to “think for themselves and work for the world.”
Our success throughout the year was possible because of you – our committed donors. We saw a remarkable 61% year-over-year increase in dollars raised by our Annual Fund campaign, enabling us to support our faculty with outstanding opportunities for growth and development. Our 8th grade Atid Campaign raised over $20,000 in new endowment funds, building a stream of revenue to support PJA in perpetuity. Our Dor L’Dor Society welcomed new members pledging after-life gifts to sustain our school. Numerous grants supported service learning, professional development, and special programs.
The Annual PJA Auction was an enormous success, with community members celebrating our “PJA All-Stars.” Every gift and sponsorship is meaningful and appreciated. The Auction raised $400,000 to support financial assistance, enabling PJA to award a total of nearly $1 million in need-based aid. In addition, the Auction raised funds for school reserves to support strategic initiatives and further grow the school’s endowment.
Your support of PJA impacts every student every day and ensures a promising future for PJA. Thank you for helping to educate the next generation of Jewish leaders.
B’shalom,
Nadine Gartner
Steve Albert Merrill Hendin Board President Executive Director Principal
Deepen our investment in our faculty and staff, and continue to build a strong culture of professional growth across all programs, to ensure that our staff best serves Portland Jewish Academy.
Each year, PJA staff are encouraged to attend conferences and trainings to further develop as professionals. This past year, PJA staff attended a variety of trainings through organizations like Prizmah and NWAIS, and they worked with individual educational coaches and mentors.
Coaches worked with PJA teachers to ensure that all students have equitable access to opportunities for learning and are supported in fully engaging at PJA, regardless of background or identity.
“As someone new to teaching the Bridges math curriculum, the one-on-one training and ongoing coaching sessions have been invaluable. I feel so fortunate to be part of a community that values growth and learning for everyone—not just the students.”
- Dani Barkat Turner, 4th grade teacher
Continue to refine and articulate an integrated and aligned educational experience for all learners that promotes inquiry, curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking.
Two years ago PJA created the Director of Student Support position, which is held by Colleen Morrissey, who works with teachers to decide how to best meet the needs of each student.
PJA has implemented education plans to ensure the success of all students. These customized plans are created by a team of teachers, student support educators, parents, and administrators to support students with multiple resources at the individual, classroom, school, and community level.
“One of the things that I love most about PJA’s teachers and staff is their ability to foster and nurture a love for learning among their students. PJA has a way of making learning a fun and engaging process which is a gift that will be with them throughout their academic years.”
- PJA Parent
Ensure that PJA graduates develop a strong foundation of Jewish life and literacy, Hebrew skills, and authentic connection to Israel while remaining steadfast in our commitment to pluralism.
The Jewish Studies program at PJA teaches our students to “stand on the shoulders of giants” while inviting them to be a part of the centuriesold Jewish conversation around connecting to and interpreting ancient texts.
PJA utilizes resources through Pedagogy of Partnership and Hebrew at the Center, programs that guide educators in the study and improvement of their teaching and advance the field of Jewish and Hebrew language education. Faculty and staff receive individualized coaching, training, and professional development with a Jewish lens at the center.
Throughout the year, our campus bursts with music and tradition as students and families come together to celebrate the richness of Jewish life. From lighting candles to singing, dancing, creating art, and giving back to the community, every celebration is designed to spark curiosity, joy, and a sense of belonging.
Increase entry level grade (kindergarten and sixth grade) enrollment and lateral transfers through targeted marketing and messaging, deeper relationships with the extended PJA community, and the strategic use of new tuition models.
This past year saw the exploration of a new bus system that allows for the pick-up and drop-off of more students around the Portland metro area. By partnering with Oregon Episcopal School, this has been implemented for the 2025-26 school year and has already created ease for parents.
In 2025, PJA convened an Affordability Task Force whose mission is to explore various tuition models and alternatives that will decrease the financial barriers for prospective and currently enrolled families. This will further support the more than 50% of PJA day school families receiving financial assistance through needbased tuition assistance.
“We have been at PJA since our son started in the Early Childhood program at 8 months old. He is now in 2nd grade. The warm, supportive and welcoming community has been an amazing place for him and our family.”
- PJA Parent
Identify opportunities for cost savings and increase non-tuition revenue – particularly from fundraising, endowment, and rentals – in order to strengthen PJA’s financial position and ensure its financial sustainability.
Each spring, PJA families, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, and past donors support us during the Annual Fund Drive. These funds support professional development opportunities for teachers.
The annual PJA auction is critical to our fundraising success, benefits tuition assistance, and provides essential operating support. It is also one of the most anticipated events of the year, bringing the full PJA community together to celebrate the school with a night of games, socializing, and high energy support.
Parent support for PJA can be found in every corner. From leading the Kehillah organization (parent community) to participating on various committees, to contributing to the Annual Auction and spearheading the Annual Fund, our parents demonstrate their commitment towards achieving sustainability.
