SPORTS AT BGS

Sport is in our DNA, it is nurtured in every student from the day they start to the day they leave.

Our Ethos

The key to success is providing an outstanding sporting education where every student has the opportunity to flourish and reach her potential as a sportswoman. We believe that every student has the ability to improve and progress on the sports pitch, just as she does in the classroom. We employ an inclusive open-door policy for sport and from the beginning of Year 3, all students take part in a variety of sports at all levels, helping them to develop holistically and embed technical skills. Our sporting approach means that, as well as spotting and developing outstanding talent, our staff have the specialist knowledge, and expertise to ensure all students benefit from regular participation in sport. Students gain a sense of genuine pride, self-worth, and happiness that they carry onto university and beyond; whether that is playing sport at a competitive level or just having the confidence to join a gym.

The PE Department works hand-in-hand with every student to help them balance school life with their sporting commitments, to build bespoke programmes to support their ambitions. Their success is fundamental to our success, whether achieved at school or for clubs, county and country; what is important is that they are developing as sportswomen. Creating a culture where we put students first enables them to shine.

Our emphasis on inclusivity, teamwork and peer support boosts self-confidence and promotes enthusiasm, focus and fun. Furthermore, unlike many co-educational schools, our expertise and time are never split along gender divides, ensuring we are able to offer a vast array of sports without compromising on the standard of delivery or restricting the numbers of those who can take part.

We recognise that sporting excellence and inclusivity are dependent on the provision of coaching and competition outside of normal school hours. As well as early morning and evening coaching, we maximise the opportunities open to the students by offering an extensive programme of weekend and holiday fixtures, training camps and tournaments. Participation is encouraged for everyone, not just our elite performers, and we often field A - E Teams in Years 5-8 at each competition.

Our holistic approach has paid huge dividends and seen our students win national and regional competitions in every curriculum sport. Our elite sportswomen go on to represent their countries but more importantly, for me, I am proud that every student leaves BGS with the understanding of the importance that fitness plays in their day-to-day life, and the skills to embed it into their routines.

I hope this booklet helps provide an overview of the outstanding opportunities we can offer your daughter to help her find a sport she loves at BGS. I look forward to welcoming you to the sidelines, riverbank, swimming pools and athletics tracks in the years ahead.

Our Approach

CURRICULUM SPORTS

• All students from Year 3 to the end of Year 8 have five sports lessons across a two-week period.

• From Years 9-Lower Sixth students have four sports lessons over a two-week period.

• Upper Sixth have a compulsory PE lesson twice across the two-week timetable.

• Sports lessons are scheduled as a Year Group activity so that students have the opportunity to collaborate with a wider cohort and work with students of a similar level of technical ability.

• Sports are played on rotation across the year.

• Students have curriculum swimming lessons from Years 3 to 8.

• From Year 9 students can start to make choices about their sports options; they can either decide to keep a broad range of sports or they can start to specialise. Those who are not interested in team sports can move to a fitness and wellbeing programme, including yoga, badminton, football and various fitness sessions which include the use of our fitness suite.

• Junior School students use the Senior School sports facilities, becoming familiar with navigating the Senior School and learning to be independently responsible for their sports kit.

• Unlike many other schools we encourage our students to take part in sports out of school.

• We believe that the more they play and enjoy their sport there will be a greater likelihood of lifelong participation. By playing in different surroundings they improve their skills and understanding of the sports alongside forming wider friendship groups.

CO-CURRICULUM SPORTS AND TRIPS

• We offer a very extensive co-curricular programme with approximately 100 clubs and practices running across any one term either before, during or after school.

• A termly co-curricular programme is published to the students and placed on the parent portal for parents to see.

• The programme will provide details of age groups, times and venues. If a particular session is for a selected team only this will also be specified. Please take time to read the programme carefully.

• If a student signs up for a club we expect them to inform the member of staff running the session when they are unable to attend.

• We aim to offer clubs before, during and after school making it possible for all students to attend some form of co-curricular sport.

• If your daughter has aspirations of representing a BGS team, we strongly encourage her to attend some of the co-curricular practices, although we do understand that students may not be able to attend them all.

3

• Students may go to our Late Care facility once they have finished sports practices to wait to be collected by parents.

• We offer trips to watch professional matches, often supporting our sports coaches playing for their professional teams; we also offer opportunities for our students to attend sports conferences.

• Each year we run a number of pre-season sport camps at School.

• We also offer a number of residential trips including our Year 8 netballers attending the GSA residential tournament at Condover Hall; a swim camp to various European destinations; and an annual residential rowing camp to prepare for the Summer Regatta season.

• We aim to offer an international sports tour for our senior teams every two-three years.

OUR FACILITIES

• We have outstanding sports facilities with astro pitches on both the Junior and Senior School sites which are used for hockey, lacrosse, netball, football, cricket and tennis.

• We have a large playing field which is used for lacrosse, cricket and athletics.

• We have a 20 metre swimming pool on site.

• A large sports hall and a smaller gym support our delivery of sport.

• We also have a well equipped fitness suite which students use from Year 9 upwards.

• Our second sports site, Cople Fields, is a seven minute drive from school. It houses six full size lacrosse pitches and a stunning clubhouse, where parents can view the games on a cold winter’s morning with a warm cup of coffee in hand. This facility allows us to host regional tournaments in stunning surroundings.

• Given the amount of co-curricular sports sessions taking place at any one time we also make use of some additional off-site facilities. These include using Gordon Fields (Bedford School’s all-weather pitches), the University of Bedfordshire and Bedford Hockey Club and more recently Bedford Cricket Club.

TEAM SELECTION

• On average we participate in over 1,000 sports fixtures a year.

• We aim to run as many teams as possible so that a large number of students have the opportunity to experience competitive play; however, undoubtedly there will be occasions when students are not selected to play or move teams.

• Any student that is attending cocurricular practices is expected to be available for school fixtures, both mid-week and on a Saturday during term. If a student is unavailable for a particular weekend fixture, they should make contact with the member of staff in charge of their team, giving plenty of advanced notice.

• Team sheets will be published at the start of the week. There will sometimes be occasions that students are selected to play out of age-group.

4

• We do wish to support students and their families making plans over the weekend, but would ask that you communicate with us in advance to establish if a student is due to be playing on a given weekend.

• The PE staff will always take a number of factors into account when selecting the best team for a match. They will be looking at technique, a demonstration of commitment and the right skills to form the best team for the opposition. Teams are not set in stone and students may be asked to play up or down depending on the situation.

• Our team of staff are experienced professionals and their decisions on team selection are final. They will always take the time to explain a decision to a student and to provide feedback and strategies towards improvement, where needed.

• Team selection and fixtures are communicated by emails in the Junior School and placed on the Sports Portal in the Senior School.

OUR ELITE SPORT PROGRAMME

• With the depth in sporting talent growing every year, the School has seen a significant increase in the number of athletes representing their county and country.

• To support the differing needs of these athletes, we have developed an Athlete Support Programme for students in Years 10 and above. The programme is designed to help athletes achieve their full sporting potential whilst ensuring that academic success is maximised.

• The Athlete Support Programme is tailored to the student’s needs to help her balance academic work alongside her sporting commitments. It will also help to ensure that she has the appropriate rest and recovery time in her sporting programme to enable her to flourish.

EXPECTATIONS OF OUR STUDENTS

To maintain a successful, enjoyable and professional sporting programme we have high expectations of our staff and our students. Our staff are fully invested in developing every student’s sporting potential. In return we expect students to:

• Always be on time for sports lessons and practices.

• To come prepared: to have the right kit and equipment with them.

• To be committed: if a student wishes to progress or to represent the school they need to demonstrate commitment; to attend, where they can, additional sessions; and to fully engage in every lesson.

• They need to be resilient. Sport does not always go the right way; they have to learn to pick themselves up, understand what went wrong and try again.

• Students are representing the school at matches. They are expected to uphold our values.

• To be kind and empathic on and off the field of play; both to their teammates and our oppositions.

• We want them to have fun, but to always follow instructions and listen to advice. This is how they will learn.

Athletics and Cross Country

Athletics is one of our major Summer sports and is contested amongst local, regional and national school teams. Teams are formed in the Junior School, with the core running, jumping and throwing skills taught in curriculum lessons from Year 3. Students start competing in Year 5 and they have the opportunity to continue representing BGS right up to and including Upper Sixth. We have an abundance of opportunities to compete with local leagues being run for Years 5-10. We enjoy regular success at both District and County Level and students regularly qualify for the finals of the National Preparatory Schools competition. We also have a proven track record in the English Schools’ AA Track and Field Cup for Junior and Intermediate age groups, qualifying for the regional rounds.

All students attend regular training sessions throughout the Summer Term regardless of previous experience or ability; making use of the onsite provision of a grass track, long jump pit and high jump bed. We take full advantage of the amazing facilities at the Bedford International Athletics Track that is right on our doorstep. We also continue these links with the Club and encourage girls of all ages, who are showing particular potential, to attend the plentiful and regular training sessions they run.

It also provides a fantastic foundation for lifelong fitness as well as improving mental focus, determination and resilience of character – qualities that transcend curricular and co-curricular sport and have a positive impact on general wellbeing.

We have an extremely successful team of Cross Country runners who compete in local and regional competitions. The school also has several students who have been selected to run in national competitions and a number of elite runners who have raced for England at international fixtures.

We run teams from Years 5-Upper Sixth in the Spring Terms, encouraging students to challenge their boundaries. Our students regularly qualify for the Regional Finals of the English Schools’ Cross Country Championships and have also made the National Finals in Bolton.

Cricket

In Summer 2022 cricket was introduced as a major sport.

All students from Years 3 to Upper Sixth are offered cricket in curriculum PE lessons, alongside training at lunchtimes and after school. One of the benefits of cricket is the different formats that can be played, depending on ability, experience, time of year.

As the students grow, those who are keen to develop, are confident, and show technical ability can start to play hardball cricket; whilst those who are new to the game or want a more relaxed version can play softball. Cricket can also be played through the winter, both as training in the sports hall nets or as an indoor game. The School has a 2G Flicx pitch which enables students to play hardball and softball matches on site. Indoor training started in February 2022 and shortly after the school entered the Lady Taverners Indoor League. We have indoor and outdoor cricket nets, with a bowling machine, to assist training.

In our inaugural year of 2022 after winning the county finals at both U13 and U15, BGS then represented Cricket East at the Regionals Finals and were one of only two schools who qualified across the East region in both age groups.

Equestrian

The School has a team of students that compete at all levels in a multitude of equestrian competitions. The team is open to any students who own or have access to their own horse or pony, and the students can compete at any level that they like.

Some prefer to compete as an individual for BGS and others enjoy the challenge of the team effort riding in squads of four. Over the years we have had tremendous success, consistently winning the County Championship titles in Show Jumping and competing at The Royal Windsor Horse Show and Hickstead International Showground, as well as attending many local shows and events. All events cater for novice riders up to the more experienced.

The National Schools Equestrian Association schedule is now a major feature on the Equestrian calendar and BGS compete with over 100 schools from all over the country.

KIT LIST

BGS equestrian team personalised jackets & gilet options are available to purchase. Full details on this are available through our equestrian team organisers.

The Fitness Suite had a complete refit in the Summer of 2022 and houses a number of running machines, cross-trainers, ergos, bikes, weights and a SkiErg.

The Fitness Suite is open for use throughout the day for our Sixth Form students who can use the space in their non-contact periods in at least groups of two.

Hockey

Hockey is one of the most popular timetabled and co-curricular sporting activities among students from Years 3 to Upper Sixth. With expert coaching and our own all-weather pitch, we are able to offer a style and pace of play that stretches the students to reach their full potential.

All students enjoy receiving precisely the right level of coaching for their stage of skill and development. Dedicated hockey coaching also means we are able to offer hockey all year round, not just through the Autumn Term.

We regularly field as many as 20 teams on a single day during any given Saturday in the Autumn Term, ensuring everyone can represent the school in a team which is at the right level for them.

We also offer both before and after school training sessions, for outfield players and goalkeepers, and always run pre-season hockey training in September delivered by the excellent MT13 coaching company. We also run coaching during the half term and Easter holidays from top level coaches and international hockey players.

We excel at hockey, often winning both regional and national level competitions across age ranges. Every year a large number of our students represent club, county and national teams, continuing to play the game at university and beyond.

Inspiring Alumnae

Lacrosse

Played on the grass with 10 players on a team, lacrosse is a fast and furious sport and is often described as ‘the fastest game on two feet.’ Students relish the excitement of representing the School in county, regional and national tournaments, and enjoy taking part in regular school matches against teams from Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Middlesex on weekends during the Autumn and Spring Terms.

Open to all students in Year 6 and above, lacrosse is a key winter sport with all students benefiting from expert coaches in their Games classes. Each Year Group are also offered lunch time and after school lacrosse sessions in addition to their core curriculum classes. Specialist goalkeeping sessions are also in place for those who take up this very exciting position.

The number of BGS students competing at county and regional level has increased significantly, as well as having players at all ages involved in the England talent development pathways. Many students, reflecting the truly inclusive nature of the sport, play purely for the thrill of being part of a team while also celebrating their hard work and enthusiasm for the sport.

Fixtures are every Saturday morning for the whole of the Spring Term, culminating in County Tournaments and the National Schools Lacrosse Tournament in March.

Netball

Netball is enjoyed by all ages and is offered to the students from Years 3 to Upper Sixth. We have seven floodlit all-weather courts, an indoor court and two courts also situated on our newly laid astro in the Junior School.

In addition to lesson time, extra coaching is available after school and regular tournaments and fixtures are played at evenings and weekends as well as during the school day. We field A, B, C, D, E and F teams in each age group, where possible, in as many tournaments as possible. We have an extensive netball fixture list for all age groups across all abilities. This spurs each and every student to work hard to improve their performance. It also helps everyone understand the value of determination and practice by clearly outlining a pathway for progression.

From Year 7, our top netballers are selected to go through to county netball trials. If successful from here, they will be chosen to enter the satellite/development squad or the full county squad. When in the county squad, the students can be put forward into the Netball Super League hubs which act as regional performance hubs. We have a large representation of students in the county and regional squads as well as U19 and U21 National Performance League Squads.

Rowing

From the Summer Term of Year 8, all students are given the opportunity to try out this uniquely demanding and rewarding sport. Enjoyment, teamwork and commitment are at the heart of the Boat Club at BGS, and the coaching team aim to achieve success on the water through a combination of these key values.

From Year 9, students can elect to row in their timetabled lessons and take part in a comprehensive programme of before and after school rowing and fitness sessions. These include Saturday morning sessions around the year. The rowing squad take part in competitions across the year both locally and nationally. Each year students enjoy a residential rowing camp to provide intensive training ahead of the summer regatta session.

We have achieved success at national and international level on the water, with GB representation at Junior level, and medallists at National Schools Regatta and Henley Women’s Regatta since the Boat Club formed. Rowing at BGS has also opened up the opportunity for some of our students to be offered rowing scholarships at US universities. We are proud to offer one of the most competitive programmes in girls’ only schools in the UK.

We are supported by our parent community who provide assistance and fund-raising opportunities across the year.

Swimming

Swimming is offered as a regular timetabled sport from Year 3 to the end of Year 8; from Year 9 onwards students can opt to swim in PE lessons.

Our timetabled sessions deliver the highest quality swimming lessons with a focus on technique. Every student is placed in a swimming development group that is relevant to their experience and confidence. They are regularly assessed throughout the year to ensure that they are being stretched to the correct level.

Our extensive after school co-curricular swimming sessions focus on implementing high level technique into the students’ swimming training. These are quite physically demanding sessions aimed at making the students much fitter and faster in competitive swimming races.

We also offer invitational morning and lunchtime swimming sessions which are aimed at developing already high-achieving students and working on fine technical development in smaller groups, where a high level of feedback can be provided. This enables the students to perform their race skills at the highest possible level. We will work with local clubs to coordinate these morning sessions which may allow club swimmers to free up an evening for school work and family time.

The students regularly compete in swim galas and we have a strong track-record of success at national level competitions. Many of our swimmers also go on to join our triathlete programme.

KIT LIST

Required:

• School swimming hat

• Black swimming costume

• Swimming goggles

• Towel and swim bag

Optional:

• For swimmers who are regularly picked for swimming galas there is a swimming team shirt available

14

Tennis

Tennis is offered as Summer sport from Years 3-Upper Sixth.

We mirror the Lawn Tennis Association pathway; helping students to establish the correct technique with the Mini Tennis programme.

In Year 3 tennis is taught as Mini Tennis Red, played with a sponge ball on a reduced sized court. As pupils move up through the Junior School they progress through Mini Orange and Mini Green stages until they are ready for a full-sized court in Year 6.

We have very strong links with Riverside Lawn Tennis Club (LTC). With support from Riverside LTC, which includes their coaches and the use of their tennis courts in the winter, the School runs a tennis academy throughout the year. Students showing potential from Years 3 to 11 participate in early morning sessions five times a week at the Riverside LTC.

In the Senior School, with 12 astro tennis courts on site, students can complement tennis in the curriculum by practising before school, at lunchtimes and after school.

We field strong teams across all age groups and play regular fixtures on Saturdays during the Summer Term. With the use of the 24 courts at Bedford School in addition to the 12 courts on site, it means that there are regularly 72 students playing tennis for the School on Saturday mornings.

Bedford Girls’ School is one of the strongest tennis schools in the UK, regularly achieving successes at national level competitions.
