Last May, Bob Scannell celebrated 35 years of leadership at Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester. Over the years, our organization has expanded and grown stronger under Bob’s leadership. Despite the stresses of the COVID-19 pandemic, Bob and his team remained steady and resilient, unwavering in their dedication to our children, families and communities. We are still grappling with many issues of the past two years including mental health and learning loss in our youth, both exacerbated by today’s economic insecurity. Despite these challenges, our organization has been a lifeline to support the children and families of BGCD.
Our values at BGCD are Respect, Innovation, Support, and Equality, which is what you’ll quickly discover when you are welcomed through the doors of our three Clubhouses in Dorchester. I want to thank Bob, Mary, the dedicated staff, and supporters like you who value our commitment to excellence.
I am excited to begin the next phase of work as we expand our footprint in Dorchester and are able to serve even more children. As we say at BGCD, “We are stronger together!”
With gratitude for your continued partnership,
BGCD offers more than 200 youth and family programs in the areas of education, art, music, career prep, character and leadership development, health and life skills, athletics, aquatics, social recreation, early education & care, summer programs, behavioral health services, and family engagement.

BGCD is committed to representing all members of our diverse community, and our DEI Task Force prioritizes equitable inclusion for all BGCD children, families, staff, volunteers, and board members.
19% of our FY22 members had a disability or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Our award-winning Project BIND (Boston Inclusion Network for Disabilities) initiative fosters the inclusion of youth of all abilities in programs Club-wide to provide meaningful opportunities for all children to participate and succeed. A unique partnership with the Martin Richard Foundation allows our members to participate in four seasons of Challenger Sports Leagues, Music Therapy, “Tween” Groups, Family Swim, and more.

Since 1974, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester has served the youth of Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood through an array of life-changing programs, offered at three strategically placed Clubhouses throughout the city. Currently, we welcome 4,000 youth from over 140 different area schools.
Dorchester has long been a gateway for incoming newcomers, and that tradition continues to this day, contributing to the vibrancy of this vital but underserved community. We are proud to serve and support community members from dozens of different countries of origin, and honor the languages and cultures of each individual child and their families. Other Club families have been here for several generations, and we believe we are stronger because of that blend of new and established.
In 2022, BGCD’s Healthy Meals program provided nearly 80,000 free, nutritious meals and snacks to our youth from urban, low-income households. Due to the increased need in our community with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and children’s inability to access their school meals programs, we supported our families by distributing an additional 300 food boxes during February and April school vacation weeks.
“I appreciate how much Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester cares about our kids by providing healthy meals at no cost” - BGCD Parent
The powerful bond between a child and parent is at the center of BGCD’s LIFT program. As a youth organization, we recognize that the struggles of a family cannot be separated from its children. Our LIFT program offers practical strategies for parents and families to advance their economic independence while supporting their children’s development. 100% of LIFT families set and worked towards family goals.
LIFT was launched with the generous support from the Ullian Institute.
BGCD is unique in that it offers Early Education & Care to infants beginning at two months of age through kindergarten enrollment. Early Education and care is not commonly offered at other Boys & Girls Clubs. The program provides parents with highquality, affordable childcare that supports the academic, social-emotional, and physical development of young children to fully prepare them to successfully enter kindergarten.
• BGCD’s Licensed Childcare Program serves infants, toddlers, preschool and K1
• Trained and knowledgeable staff foster learning in an atmosphere of play
• Extended day programs are offered year-round in Boston Public School K1DS classrooms
• Research-based curriculum aligns with MA standards and guidelines
The programs are licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care and are accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
BGCD encourages Healthy Lifestyles among our youth through programs that promote healthy living, enhance life skills, and build strong nutritional habits. Our programs serve as motivational tools to provide the building blocks of working towards individual goals and making positive life choices.
Our programs include athletics, aquatics, wellness classes, cooking and nutrition classes, and mental health support.
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, BGCD has witnessed a decline in the mental health of our youth, coupled with a decrease in the availability of supportive youth mental health services in our community. In response, we launched BGCD’s Behavioral Health Services program.
A primary partner in providing these services to our members and families is Sevita Health. Together, we developed a program that provides social, emotional, and mental health support through individual, group, and family treatment on-site at our Clubhouses with licensed, highly qualified clinicians.
Our Behavioral Health Services and Sanctuary Space are the perfect complements to our long-running Healthy Lifestyles activities. Both are critical and essential support systems as we work together to help our youth heal.
Our Education Programs support youth from kindergarten through high school and include enrichment activities focused on literacy, STEM, and college and career preparation. Throughout the year, the Club offers a variety of services designed to encourage, inspire and help our members develop stronger study skills, improve their academic achievement, and grow into lifelong learners.
• 99% of BGCD 5th to 12th graders are on grade level for their age.
• 95% of BGCD members said they enjoy learning new things.
• 94% of BGCD members expect to graduate high school.
We offer a full range of arts programs which allow our members to exercise their creativity while appreciating a wide spectrum of artistic expression. We offer a vast array of programming including visual arts, media arts, music lessons, dance, film and many other activities that keep members engaged, stimulated and eager to come back for more.
We encourage our young artists to incorporate their culture, traditions, experiences, and individual personalities into the work they create, and to celebrate each other’s unique forms of expression.
Through our daytime Summer Camp program for children ages 5-12, our dedicated staff members engage participants in a combination of educational and fun activities! Members rotate through our core program areas throughout the day and also take field trips to museums, sporting events, theater performances, parks and recreational attractions. Members and staff take part in various theme weeks as well with fun coordinating activities, dress-up days, and more.
Our popular Safe Summer Streets program offers teen members ages 13-18 a safe and structured place to spend their summer evenings. Safe Summer Streets began in 1990 to curb escalating youth violence in our community and was the first evening summer program for teens in Boston, winning the national Honor Award for Program Excellence from Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The program runs daily from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and provides teens with volunteer service and leadership opportunities, sports activities, arts and crafts, nutritious meals, and a ride home when the Club closes.
Each year, our members finish off an exciting, activity-filled summer with a week at Camp Northbound in Bridgton, Maine! Camp Northbound is a time for kids to spend with friends while engaging in some of their favorite outdoor activities. Members have the chance to relax before they start the new school year. Throughout the week, members enjoy activities such as swimming, arts and crafts, ninja warrior obstacle courses, water tubing and much more, including some friendly competition Blue v. Green in a Color War. With the help from our friends at Camp Micah and the Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation, BGCD provides an unforgettable end to summer with fond memories that carry our members through the school year.
Each August since 1992, our Disney for Kids program has sent Dorchesterarea kids on all expenses paid trips to the Orlando theme parks: Walt Disney World and Universal Studios. More than 3,000 kids have been on the trip to date. The program is funded by Rodman for Kids, and the many friends and partners who support their efforts. Rodman for Kids is dedicated to continuing Don Rodman’s legacy by providing members of our Club and our partner organizations opportunities and memories that will last a lifetime. Our Club members have an unforgettable experience visiting the different parks.
A trip to Walt Disney World and Universal Studios Florida is not a necessity, but for kids who have never been on a plane or stayed in a hotel, it is lifechanging. By gaining independence, making new friends, and visiting the “Happiest Place on Earth,” kids’ horizons are broadened, friendships are solidified and indelible memories are created.
For the past 47 years, the Club has recognized members who embody our mission. In addition to being BGCD’s Youth of the Year, Tina was selected as one of four finalists for the Massachusetts Youth of the Year competition.
Tina has been a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester for more than 10 years, and her favorite memory was her first day at the Club when she met the late Bruce Seals, a longtime BGCD staff member.
At our recent Alumni Reunion, Tina also had the opportunity to chat with BGCD’s first-ever Youth of the Year from 1976, Billy King!
In June 2022, the Club hosted more than 300 alumni and friends for a reunion that featured a basketball tournament in honor of beloved former BGCD staff member, Bruce Seals.
Alums regularly engage on our social media platforms, help raise money for the Rodman Ride for Kids, support holiday food and toy drives, tutor members, and stay actively involved in Club matters. BGCD alumni exemplify the character and leadership we value at BGCD and set a remarkable example for the youth in our programs.
Our Alumni Association includes over 500 former members and is still growing!
Dorchester lost one of its most generous and loyal friends on August 7, 2022.
Among Bob’s greatest achievements was founding, along with his brother Dan, the Colonel Daniel Marr Boys Club in Dorchester (later renamed Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester) in 1974.
Bob leaves behind many close friends and associates from his lifetime of work with the Marr Companies, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, and the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Boston. His impact will be forever felt here at BGCD and across our community. Rest in eternal peace, Bob.
