200+ PROGRAMS 1 COMMUNITY

DEAR BGCD FAMILY,

Dorchester is a special place, a community rooted in generosity and aspiration. It is also richly diverse and accepting, a neighborhood people are proud to live in and call home.

For 50 years, BGCD has engaged thousands of Dorchester families, and now we are welcoming many third and fourth generation members, staff, and supporters into our Club family. Our continuum of support begins in our nationally recognized Early Education & Care program for children as young as two months and continues in our award-winning out-of-school time membership program for youth ages 5-18. In this way, we support young people at every stage, from infancy through high school graduation. We are proud to serve the children and families of Dorchester and beyond.

Today's members are the regions' future parents, community leaders and workforce. Every board member, staff person and volunteer work to ensure our young people are better prepared for their futures, and this cascades across the region. Together with our 200+ program partners in education, leadership, arts and athletics, BGCD programs instill skills and mindsets that will benefit every aspect of community life.

Take a look at what we have going on at Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester, we promise you will be inspired.

With gratitude,

#WeAreDorchester

Since 1974, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester has served the youth of Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood through an array of life-changing programs, offered at three strategically placed Clubhouses throughout the city. Currently, we welcome over 4,000 youth from 170 different schools.

Dorchester has long been a gateway for newcomers, and that tradition continues to this day, contributing to the vibrancy of this vital but under resourced community. We are proud to serve and support community members from dozens of different countries of origin, and honor the languages and cultures of each individual child and their families. Many Club families have been here for generations, and we believe we are stronger because of that blend of new and established families who are part of our community.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

We encourage Healthy Lifestyles among our youth through programs that promote healthy living, enhance life skills, and build strong nutritional habits. Our programs serve as motivational tools which provide the building blocks for setting individual goals and making positive life choices. Programs include athletics, aquatics, wellness classes, cooking and nutrition classes, and mental health support.

PROJECT BIND

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Our Education Programs support youth from kindergarten through high school and include enrichment activities focused on literacy, STEM, and college and career preparation. Throughout the year, the Club offers a variety of services designed to encourage, inspire and help our members develop stronger study skills, improve their academic achievement, and grow into lifelong learners.

20% of our FY23 members had a disability or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Our award-winning Project BIND (Boston Inclusion Network for Disabilities) initiative fosters the inclusion of youth of all abilities in programs Club-wide to provide meaningful opportunities for all children to participate and succeed. A unique partnership with the Martin Richard Foundation allows our members to participate in four seasons of Challenger Sports Leagues, Music Therapy, “Tween” Groups, Family Swim, and more.

FINE ARTS

We offer a full range of arts programs which allow our members to exercise their creativity while appreciating a wide spectrum of artistic expression. We offer a vast array of programming including visual arts, media arts, music lessons, dance, film and many other activities that keep members engaged, stimulated and eager to come back for more. We encourage our young artists to incorporate their culture, traditions, experiences, and individual personalities into the work they create, and to celebrate each other’s unique forms of expression.

EARLY EDUCATION & CARE

BGCD is unique in that it offers Early Education & Care to infants beginning at two months of age through kindergarten enrollment. Early Education and Care is unique to BGCD. The program provides parents with highquality, affordable childcare that supports the academic, social-emotional, and physical development of young children to fully prepare them to successfully enter kindergarten.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, BGCD has witnessed a decline in the mental health of our youth, coupled with a decrease in the availability of supportive youth mental health services in our community. In response, we launched BGCD’s Behavioral Health Services program. This program provides social, emotional, and mental health support through individual, group, and family treatment on-site at our Clubhouses with licensed, highly qualified clinicians.

YEAR OF THE TEEN TAKEOVER

In FY23, BGCD focused on the importance of our teens and their programs. We provide a fun and safe place for teens to spend their time with friends under the supervision of caring adults. Each program is designed with the teens in mind, helping to build character, enhance leadership development, and help disrupt youth violence in our communities.

Power Forward, our College & Career Prep programming for Grades 8-12, empowers each participant to apply, enroll, and successfully transition into their individual post-secondary futures. Youth explore four-year universities, community colleges, the trades, industryrecognized job training programs, police cadet programs and the military. Our Career Cafés feature inspiring guest speakers from local businesses, trade unions, biotech and healthcare industries, police, and academia. This well-rounded curriculum touches upon everything from college essay preparation and resume-building to attaining scholarships and financial literacy.

on-site employment

Our for teens included 90 young people who worked during the Summer 2023, with approximately 35 continuing to work during the school-year. Of our school-year junior staff, about 20 individuals are duplicates from the summer session and 10-15 are newly enrolled participants.

Safe Summer Streets , Boston’s first nighttime teen summer program, promotes youth violence prevention, character building and leadership development. It offers teens a fun way to spend their summer through an engaging mix of drop-in activities, field trips, and free time with friends, all under the supervision of caring adults. We extend our operating hours until 10:00 PM weeknights in July and August and give kids a ride home at the end of the night to keep them safe during the high-risk evening hours.

The Summer of 2023, we introduced the program to our group of Career Prep members. This group of 14 & 15 year olds were introduced to the workforce through training, volunteer opportunities, assisting at large special events, and attending sessions to garner skills for success.

BGCD’s builds leadership skills while serving the community through a variety of Club and community based service projects.

2023 YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Meet BGCD’s 2023 Youth of the Year, Deshawn Vega!

Each year, BGCD recognizes a member who embodies the Club’s mission and values as our Youth of the Year. In addition to being selected as our Youth of the Year, Deshawn continued at the statewide level to win the Massachusetts Youth of the Year competition.

Deshawn has been a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester since he was a little kid. His favorite thing about BGCD is that it is always a safe space. He has loved the opportunity to explore new hobbies, make new friends, and simply have fun.

Deshawn has been working at the Walter Denney Youth Center since 2021 and is grateful that he gets to be a role model and friend to the members he works with each day.

Deshawn says, “the Club provides so many things...so many programs and opportunities. But the most important thing they provide is hope. Hope always conquers fear and sadness. Thank you for providing hope for kids just like me.”
