DEAR BGCD FAMILY,

Dorchester is a unique and vibrant community, built on the values of generosity and a shared vision for growth. It is a place that embraces diversity and inclusivity, where residents take pride in their neighborhood and feel a deep sense of belonging.

For half a century, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester has played a central role in the lives of thousands of families here, with multiple generations of members, staff, and supporters now part of our extended family. From our nationally recognized Early Education & Care program for children as young as two months to our acclaimed after-school and summer programs for youth ages 5-18, we offer comprehensive support that accompanies young people at every stage of their journey, from infancy to high school graduation.

Today’s members are tomorrow’s parents, community leaders, and professionals. Every member of our team from board members to staff to volunteers works with dedication to ensure that the next generation is prepared for success. This effort ripples throughout the region, positively impacting all aspects of community life. With the help of over 200 local partners in areas such as education, leadership, the arts, and athletics, our programs help young people build the skills and mindsets necessary to shape a bright future.

We encourage you to learn more about the exciting work happening at Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester. We are confident that what you see will leave you feeling inspired.

With gratitude,

Since 1974, Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester has served the youth of Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood through an array of life-changing programs, offered at three strategically placed Clubhouses throughout the city. Currently, we welcome over 4,000 youth from 170 different schools.

Dorchester has long been a gateway for newcomers, and that tradition continues to this day, contributing to the vibrancy of this vital but under-resourced community. We are proud to serve and support community members from dozens of different countries of origin, and honor the languages and cultures of each individual child and their families. Many Club families have been here for generations, and we believe we are stronger because of that blend of new and established families who are part of our community.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

We encourage Healthy Lifestyles among our youth through programs that promote healthy living, enhance life skills, and build strong nutritional habits. Our programs serve as motivational tools which provide the building blocks for setting individual goals and making positive life choices. Programs include athletics, aquatics, wellness classes, cooking and nutrition

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

Our Education Programs support youth from kindergarten through high school and include enrichment activities focused on literacy, STEM, and college and career preparation. Throughout the year, the Club offers a variety of services designed to encourage, inspire and help our members develop stronger study skills, improve their academic achievement, and grow into lifelong learners.

INCLUSIVE PROGRAMS / PROJECT BIND

25% of our FY24 members had a disability or an Individualized Education Program (IEP). Our award-winning Project BIND (Boston Inclusion Network for Disabilities) initiative fosters the inclusion of youth of all abilities in programs Club-wide to provide meaningful opportunities for all children to participate and succeed. A unique partnership with the Martin Richard Foundation allows our members to participate in four seasons of Challenger Sports Leagues, Music Therapy, “Tween” Groups, Family Swim, and more.

FINE ARTS

We offer a full range of arts programs which allow our members to exercise their creativity while appreciating a wide spectrum of artistic expression. We offer a vast array of programming including visual arts, media arts, music lessons, dance, film and many other activities that keep members engaged, stimulated and eager to come back for more. We encourage our young artists to incorporate their culture, traditions, experiences, and individual personalities into the work they create, and to celebrate each other’s unique forms of expression.

EARLY EDUCATION & CARE

BGCD is unique in that it offers Early Education & Care to infants beginning at two months of age through kindergarten enrollment. Early Education and Care is unique to BGCD. The program provides parents with highquality, affordable childcare that supports the academic, social-emotional, and physical development of young children to fully prepare them to successfully enter kindergarten.

BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, BGCD has witnessed a decline in the mental health of our youth, coupled with a decrease in the availability of supportive youth mental health services in our community. In response, we launched BGCD’s Behavioral Health Services program. This program provides social, emotional, and mental health support through individual, group, and family treatment on-site at our Clubhouses with licensed, highly qualified clinicians.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS

2024 was the year of Boys & Girls Clubs of Dorchester’s 50th Anniversary! Over the years we have served thousands of youth and families, made countless memories, fostered lasting relationships and provided great futures for so many of our members. Throughout 2024, we celebrated 50 years of building Dorchester’s future in many different ways. A couple of our favorite memories include:

THE ANNUAL DORCHESTER DAY PARADE

Over 30 BGCD members took part in the Annual Dorchester Day Parade and to recognize the Clubs 50th Anniversary in the community! BGCD’s Keystone Club lead the way while our Baton and Dance Programs performed walking the 3.2 mile route along with some BGCD staff and parents. Our members worked on special routines for the parade and were beaming with pride to represent the Club and their community.

BOSTON POPS JULY 4TH SPECTACULAR

To celebrate and recognize the shared 50th anniversaries of BGCD and the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s 4th of July Spectacular, 125 BGCD members and families were invited to take part in the festivities on July 4th on the Esplanade! Our families were given special wristbands to have access to the best view in front of the Hatch Shell to watch the entertainment and have a great view of the fireworks display.

Since our 1974 inception, the Club has grown in size, expanded its diverse offerings, and touched the lives of countless youth and families. Throughout our evolution, BGCD has remained steadfast in its mission to welcome and connect young people and families to opportunities that embrace diversity, nurture growth, and inspire success.

Over the 50 years, BGCD has grown our footprint from one to three clubhouses and serves over 4,000 youth and families. The Club is constantly adapting and expanding its programming in response to the community’s needs and proudly offers fully inclusive programs designed to encourage the educational and social skills of children of all abilities.

“This year marked an important milestone for all of us,” notes BGCD CEO Bob Scannell. “As we acknowledge years of service to the Dorchester community, our focus is from this point forward, taking bold steps to ensure BGCD’s impact continues to grow during the next 50. Our state-of-the-art FieldHouse+, a renovation of the Marr Clubhouse, and exciting new programming are just a glimpse of what is to come.”

DONOR HIGHLIGHT

2024 marks the 21st year of New Balance Foundation’s support of BGCD, which has helped us transform thousands of children’s lives for the better. Since 2003, our friends at the New Balance Foundation (NBF) have invested more than $500,000 in the Club’s programs! Their grants have supported our Fit Dot Individual Fitness Programming, which includes our main pillars of Athletics, Aquatics, and overall Healthy Lifestyles. In line with their mission to invest in vibrant communities and bright futures through sport, NBF's long standing support has provided opportunities for kids of all backgrounds and abilities. On top of their significant financial support, the New Balance Foundation has provided inkind donations of apparel and sneakers to ensure our Club members are 'geared up' to pursue those healthy lifestyles.

The New Balance Foundation proudly joined the fundraising efforts as a major donor for the FieldHouse+ - a 75,000 square foot recreation and enrichment facility due to open in December 2026!

Thank you New Balance Foundation for all you do to provide opportunities for healthy recreation to the youth of Dorchester and beyond!
