Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation trustees gathered with Endowment Fund Charter Members for the September endowment plaque unveiling at the Club.

The special ceremony commemorated the unveiling with a champagne toast in recognition of this significant milestone

and the generosity of our Charter Members.

“With the creation of the Endowment Fund, now over $1.6 million, we further continued our legacy of giving. As we get ready to celebrate the Club's 25th anniversary, our endowment goal this year is $2.5M for 25!” shared Mike Brocato and

When Berkeley Hall members attended the Explorer’s LEAD Graduation, they were deeply moved. Cadets stood tall, spoke with pride, and reflected a transformation that can only come from hard work, encouragement, and belief in their potential.

The program, run by the Boys & Girls Club of Bluffton, carries a powerful name: LEAD – which stands for Leadership, Excellence, Achievement, and Determination.

Supported by Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation, the Explorer’s LEAD Program equips local teens with the tools to build character, confidence, and purpose. William, one of this year’s participants, said it best: “I’ve learned how to better manage my emotions. I’m more responsible now. I feel

like a leader – and others see that, too.”

This year, the program included a powerful visit to Parris Island, where teens experienced discipline and resilience firsthand. Bluffton's Chief of Police, whose department is integral to the program, delivered this message: “We’re building character and perseverance. Your ‘can’t’ will become your ‘can.’”

For William, and all 26 teens who completed the program – LEAD was more than a commitment. It was a turning point.

Silver 25th Celebration • Sat, Oct 17, 2026

ave the date now for our spectacular Silver 25th Celebration on Saturday, October 17th, 2026. Everyone’s invited and we’ll be sharing more details as we draw closer!

As we approach this remarkable milestone, our story is best told through the voices of our members, we hope you enjoy hearing them and learning more about our Club’s shared history.

Here, we continue our lead-up to BHC’s 25th Anniversary with members Dr. Charles (Chas) and Zoe Bassos, as they share their BHC story with us!

BHC: Changes You’ve Seen

ZOE: We were here when the Clubhouse was being built and were truly wowed! Over the years, it’s evolved into a more modern look, which we really like. The Verandah especially has been a wonderful addition, along with our new amenities, from pickleball to bocce, to updates at the River Park and throughout the Club.

CHAS: When we joined, there was no golf course, no clubhouse, no fitness center. Everything you see was new to us, has aged, and been renewed. We watched the North Course, which was sodded not seeded, spring up seemingly overnight. We’ve gone from a Clubhouse that started in a tent to the beautiful building it is now. Lots of changes, and very few that haven’t increased our enjoyment of living here. 22 years is a long time to live in one place. Zoe and I picked the right place to do it!

BHC: The Berkeley Experience

CHAS: We saw developer John Reed’s vision, and we believed in him and what Berkeley Hall would be. We think it’s the best place to be, we love the low-density and the welcoming attitude that has prevailed over 22 years and I don’t think that happens in other places.

ZOE: Our member-centric groups are fabulous – I’m in theatre group, book club, fun food group, four card groups, and I just joined the garden club!

BHC: What Do You Love Most?

ZOE: I love all the social events, and I really enjoy the fitness center – it’s kept me healthy for 20 years. My whole physical well-being has improved, and when Chas needed fitness to recover from a heart attack shortly before we moved here, this place saved him. My earliest and favorite memory was the Grand Opening Celebration, when I got a photo of my high school heartthrob Peter Noone of the Herman's Hermits – I still have it in my office! And sharing a booth in the Tap Room with Chas is always a favorite place to be.

CHAS: Well, anyone who knows me knows I love to talk and laugh. On the course, at the gym, at dinner with friends, the laughter and camaraderie are special. My best memory is moving into our new home. Although we’ve lived here longer than anywhere else, we still think of this house as our new home. We designed it for the way we live, and it literally renewed us for the second part of our lives.

PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB: Holger

Opderbeck

The majesty of Berkeley Hall is well-captured through the lens of member Holger Opderbeck. As the BHC Photography Club’s featured speaker on Tuesday, November 4th at 5 pm, he will share a gallery of large prints from his 60-page Berkeley Hall photobook, showcasing the beauty of our community with sweeping aerial views, dramatic panoramas and captures of common areas, golden sunsets, and the North and South courses.

“I bought my first drone more than 10 years ago, when drones had just become advanced enough for simple commercial use and hobby flying,” shares Holger. “Rapid advances have made them far more capable, both in usability and image quality. I now own my fifth drone, equipped with three cameras that produce photos rivaling those from high-end DSLR cameras!”

Come learn more about drone photography, and you may just be the fortunate winner of his drawing for a copy of his Berkeley Hall photobook!

“The Frozen River” by Ariel Lawhon

A vivid, exciting page-turner from one of our most interesting authors of historical fiction. Lawhon’s work is inspired by the true story and diaries of midwife Martha Ballard of Hallowell, Maine. When a man accused of rape turns up dead, an Early American town seeks justice amid rumors and controversy. Supposedly, the only time a midwife can testify in court is regarding paternity when a woman gives birth out of wedlock – but Martha also takes the witness stand in the rape case against a dead man named Joshua Burgess and his living friend Col. Joseph North, whose role as judge in local court proceedings has made the victim, Rebecca Foster,

reluctant to make her complaint public. Further complications are numerous: North has control over the Ballard family's lease on their property; Rebecca is carrying the child of one of her rapists; and Martha’s son was seen fighting with Joshua Burgess on the day of his death. Lawhon weaves all this into a richly satisfying drama that moves suspensefully between childbed, courtroom, and the banks of the Kennebec River.

owcountry temperatures make for a glorious fall season and we’re off to a busy start with a full roster of tournaments and record participation! Both courses have had their usual summer maintenance and have been in great shape to start September and October. With the overseed on the South fairways, and the North tee complexes, we should be set up for another wonderful fall and winter season.

As we wrap up a busy October of

2025 NORTH-SOUTH RECAP

Our Fall season, as always, began with the North-South Challenge. The North team were defending their 2024 title, and looking to keep the bragging rights for another year. We had a full field with 26 teams representing the South team and 20 teams representing the North team. Once again, it was a closely fought contest with a very small margin between the teams at the end. But it was the South team that were victorious this year and the South flag will fly proudly for the next 12 months!

events, from the North-South Challenge to the Charity Cup, Berkeley Classic and Women’s Invitational, we wonder how the season could get even better. But we do have several golf events still to come, including the new Fall Member-Member Matchplay in November, the HAIG in November and the Club Challenge in December. And, of course, we are already looking ahead to 2026 and yet another superb year on the courses!

Golf is a game of integrity. Always do the right thing, even when no one is looking.

THE CRAFT OF MODERN AGRONOMY

n the world of golf course maintenance, “balance” may be the single most important word we use and the hardest to achieve. Every day presents a tug-of-war between agronomic science and golfer expectation, between what looks beautiful to the eye and what performs best underfoot. Finding that equilibrium where turf health, playability, and aesthetics coexist is both the challenge and the craft of modern agronomy.

Irrigation technology allows us to deliver water with remarkable precision, yet over-watering remains one of the easiest mistakes to make. Too much water reduces oxygen in the rootzone, invites disease, and softens playing surfaces. Too little and we stress turf to the point of dormancy and loss of density.

Our team uses data from soilmoisture sensors, evapotranspiration models, and daily field observations to fine-tune irrigation cycles. The goal is not “green” it is functional moisture. A balanced surface is firm enough for crisp ball roll yet supple enough to recover from play and resist wilt in the Lowcountry heat.

Fertilization is equally nuanced.

We want the plant to be strong, not spoiled. Excess nitrogen produces lush, dark green growth that pleases the eye but weakens turf structure and increases disease pressure. Too little, and we lose color, density, and recovery.

Pursuing, refining, and respecting balance is what turns maintenance into mastery. –Adam Miller

We focus on steady spoon-feeding, guided by soil and tissue tests, environmental conditions, and seasonal goals. Fertility is not about chasing color it is about fueling health. When the plant’s energy is in balance, firmness, smoothness, and consistency naturally follow.

Members understandably love to see vibrant green turf. Yet the very surfaces that play best firm, fast, tightly mown often carry a lighter hue. This can be one of the hardest balances to communicate: that a

slightly off-green fairway may, in fact, be in perfect health and ideal condition for golf.

True championship conditioning lies in playability: ball roll, surface firmness, smooth transitions, and consistent speed. Color is simply one indicator, an appealing one, but not the measure of quality.

Our job is part science, part stewardship, and part storytelling. We balance budgets, weather extremes, tournament schedules, and environmental responsibility while keeping the golf course healthy year-round. The balance extends beyond the turf itself to our people, our planning, and our patience. Every decision must weigh short-term appearance against long-term sustainability.

When all the pieces align moisture, fertility, firmness, aesthetics, and communication you can feel it immediately. The course plays true, the turf responds predictably, and golfers notice something intangible: harmony.

Balance isn’t static; it shifts daily with weather, traffic, and time. But pursuing it, refining it, and respecting it is what turns maintenance into mastery.
