MAKING A DIFFERENCE LOCALLY WELCOME MIKE BLAZER NORTH-SOUTH CHALLENGE SILVER ANNIVERSARY LEAD-UP
here’s nothing quite like fall in the Lowcountry, the golden marshes glimmer in the sunlight as the tides flow beyond to our pristine waters of the Okatie River.
Please join us in welcoming our new COO/GM Mike Blazer. He came onboard in August, just in time for our busy fall season. You can learn more about Mike and his vision for Berkeley Hall on page 8, you may even want to join him for one of his informal member lunches at the Club, to share your thoughts and get to know him better!
It’s always a glorious time for golfers as the temps dip lower and we gear up for our fall golf tournaments. On the greens, our Agronomy team has done an amazing job getting our courses ready, and we’ve got a full line-up of popular events from our North-South Challenge to the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s signature event, the 2025 Charity Cup! If you
haven’t registered yet, we encourage you to do so, this event is always a sell-out! (read more on pages 4-5).
Around the Club, BHC’s Welcome Home gathering kicks-off a wonderful season of events! We look forward to gathering with you, from casual happy hours to exciting culinary experiences. We’ve also lined up a great series of Wellness Speakers and Capt. Amber Kuehn returns to share her vast knowledge of our salt marsh estuaries and local waters.
The excitement doesn’t stop there, as we lead up to Berkeley Hall’s Silver 25th Anniversary Celebration in October of 2026! We’ll be sharing some of our Club history along with member stories in each Berkeley Experience issue as we approach this remarkable milestone. We begin with one of our earliest club members, Marsha Levin with a Q&A on page 7.
We have a wonderful story to tell, and it’s a great one to share with your family and friends. It’s exciting to see our membership share in our continued vision and we have much to look forward to this fall and beyond, as we gather to celebrate the very best of the “Berkeley Experience.”
Cheers to great gatherings here at the club, and evening sunsets on the dock!

When Marcus first joined Programs for Exceptional People (PEP), his world felt very small. A young man with autism, he lived with his grandmother in the Bluffton area, with no transportation and few opportunities to leave home. His grandmother, now in her seventies, worried about what the future would hold – for both of them.
Thanks to supporters of the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation, that future looks very different.
With grant funding from BHCF, PEP was able to provide Marcus with daily transportation to its life-enriching day
COURSE F ACTION
program. That van ride changed everything. Marcus found a welcoming community, began learning vital life and job skills, and – most meaningful of all – formed lasting friendships. He now receives a paycheck from a job with Goodwill and is learning to manage
money and navigate social settings with growing confidence.
The transformation has been remarkable. Once quiet and withdrawn, Marcus now volunteers during activities, speaks up in group discussions, and wakes up excited to start his day. “It’s given him purpose,” his grandmother says. “And it’s given me peace of mind.”
PEP’s drivers do more than just provide a lift – they offer routine, encouragement, and a familiar, smiling face that starts each day on the right note. For Marcus, that consistency was key to unlocking his confidence and potential.
Impact at a Glance
PEP Transportation Program Highlights - Powered by BHCF
• 88 members served – 100% of active PEP enrollment
• 6 van routes, over 500 miles driven daily
• 19 new members added in the past year, all relying on transportation
• 0 missed routes due to staffing shortages
• 100% of drivers trained in first aid, defensive driving, and disability sensitivity
Save the Date
s we lead up to Berkeley Hall Club’s Silver 25th Anniversary, we reflect on the extraordinary vision and foresight that brought us to where we are today. Save the date now for our spectacular Silver 25th Celebration on Saturday, October 17th, 2026. Everyone’s invited and we’ll be sharing more details as we draw closer to our event date!
Join us as we embark on celebrating 25 years of Club excellence, defined as the “Berkeley Experience.”
Berkeley Hall’s known for our gorgeous grounds and Clubhouse, premier courses and world class amenities. And what makes us such an extraordinary place to call home is our Membership! Those who’ve been with us from the beginning, and those who’ve joined us along the way.
“We’re pleased to share a bit of our Club history, as we approach this remarkable milestone, by featuring some of our longstanding members and their stories,” shares Henry Marini, Board Member, House & Social Committee Chair.
In this issue, member Marsha Levin takes a look back to when she and her husband
Howard came onboard in 2001. “Our first membership was as an NPO by lottery offered through Berkeley Hall’s developer John Reed, founder of the Reed Group. We then bought our first home in 2003 on Good Hope Road.”
Marsha later built on Holly Grove, following Howard’s passing in 2013. “I knew this was where I’d stay because of all the great friendships and camaraderie I enjoy here, in a community I love so much. And I’ve been able to run my New Jersey firm, Crown Clothing Co. from here, which manufactures uniforms for the U.S. Marine Corps. Howard’s family founded it in 1940 and we just celebrated 85 years in business!”
From the beginning, both Marsha and Howard were avid golfers. “There were only 28 or so living in residence when we moved in, and we were the 13th home built. Everyone loved the Tap Room and that was our meeting spot to gather after golf for drinks and dinner. We had so much fun!”
Marsha’s celebrating her Silver Anniversary along with the Club – which marks 25 years at BHC!
Changes You’ve Seen? There were very few members in those days and look at us now! When we first came here, the Club was a tent, the size of a circus tent – one end was the pro shop, the middle was seating for dining, and the other end was for set-up. Every Thursday night John Reed had a Member Mingle, and everybody came! Jumbo shrimp was piled high, the food was fabulous, and it was a wonderfully social time!
The grand opening of the North Course was October 26th, 2001. The developer sodded the entire North Course, which was phenomenal. And the South Course came later.
As we approach our 25th Silver Anniversary Celebration, we’re excited to share Berkeley Hall’s history and showcase the member stories that define our Berkeley Experience.
– Henry Marini, Board Member House & Social Committee Chair
Most Marvelous Memory?
Grand Opening of the Clubhouse – a grand, three-day affair from March 27-30, 2003! I’ve never seen anything like it! Live entertainment, tables overflowing with gourmet fare, life-sized statues of live people, painted gold and silver, harlequins, Frank Sinatra, Elvis and Marilyn impersonators, and an enormous tent in the back with live music, looking out over the 9th and 18th Fairways. The headliner was Peter Noone, lead singer for Herman's Hermits! The most extravagant spectacle I’ve ever seen! I've celebrated three significant birthday events here, all fabulous and those are great memories for me, too – my 65th, 75th and 80th!
What Do You Love Most? The deep friendships formed over so many years, I can’t imagine being anywhere else! I used to run a golf game called Monday Night Madness, and after we’d have drinks and dinner. Only 9 holes. And we all loved it. It really formed our first sense of community, you could say we laid the groundwork for Berkeley Hall’s easy, welcoming culture of today. This is what I treasure most. And getting to share the Silver Anniversary at the Club, that’s something I’m really looking forward to!
elcome to our new COO/GM Mike Blazer!
Many of you’ve already had a chance to meet him around the Club, and here we catch up with him for a quick hello and preview of what’s coming up for our busy fall season.
“I’ve known about Berkeley Hall since the developers were first planning it – it was a new concept, this core concept, having a community built around two fantastic golf courses, with lower density homes,” shares Mike. “So, Berkeley Hall has long been one of my most-admired clubs, and to have the opportunity to now lead the Club is the pinnacle of my 30+year career. I’ve already learned firsthand what makes this Club so special – you, the Members. I have been warmly welcomed by so many and look forward to meeting you over the coming months.”
Bluffton region, but one of the defining communities in the country. We’re incomparable in so many ways, a sense of ease and excellence that’s woven throughout – you feel it in the genuine warmth of our membership, the care of our friendly, top-notch team from the front gate to the bag drop and beyond.”
“I believe Berkeley Hall has everything it needs to be the premier club community not only in the Hilton Head Island/
“It’s an exciting time to be here at the Club, as we gear up for some incredible BHC-style events and the lead-up to the Club’s Silver 25th Anniversary Celebration in fall of 2026!
SOUS CHEF JEREMY TAYLOR EARNS CERTIFIED EXEC. CHEF CERTIFICATION
Congratulations to Berkeley Hall Sous Chef Jeremy Taylor, who recently passed his CEC practical exam at Helms College in Augusta, GA – his last step in receiving his Certified Executive Chef (CEC) certification! “We couldn’t be more pleased for Jeremy,” said Executive Chef James Kremer. “His success reflects well on our culinary program here at Berkeley Hall and is quite an accomplishment in
the culinary profession. The American Culinary Federation’s Certified Executive Chef (CEC) certification is aimed at chefs who display leadership and excel in managing and motivating employees. A CEC is a skilled, professional chef who manages the kitchen and has demonstrated the knowledge, skills and culinary experience of an advanced level in food preparation. Well done, Jeremy!
I already have a long list of things to do so I've hit the ground running. One of the most important items on my list is a focus on our member dining experience. Food and Beverage touches every member and our goal is to deliver an outstanding experience every time you dine. We are developing plans for some fun new events, new menus and new dining options, more on that to come later!”
Join Mike for one of his “Let’s Have Lunch” informal lunches beginning in September. “Each lunch will have a theme, open to the first 10 members who rsvp. My goals are to meet as many members as possible, learn more about the BHC member experience, and to address any questions or concerns you may have. I will continue these throughout the fall, or until I gain 25 pounds, whichever comes first!”
“I am deeply honored you have entrusted me with this wonderful Club and I am very excited about the journey ahead!”

“The God of the Woods” opens in nostalgic territory: It’s 1975, and Barbara and Tracy are cabin mates at Camp Emerson in the Adirondacks. Tracy is 12 and gawky, there because her father has forced her to attend so he can spend time with his new girlfriend. Barbara is a mature and rebellious 13, coolly selfassured. She’s also the only living child of the extremely wealthy Van Laar family that founded the camp. When Barbara’s counselor, Louise, realizes she’s missing, she knows exactly what’s at stake. The story moves swiftly from the drama at camp to the shock and horror of Barbara’s mother Alice. Not particularly close to her daughter, the girl’s disappearance is eerily reminiscent of an earlier tragedy, when her first child, 8-year-old son nicknamed Bear, went missing in 1961. He was never found. No matter how often Alice’s husband and the local police argue Barbara is a runaway, it’s impossible for Alice to ignore the echoes of that first loss.

“The Vow” by Jude Berman
In 1760s Venice, Angelica Kauffman struggles to make her mark as a painter while supporting herself and her father. She catches a lucky break when a British noblewoman takes her to London to seek her fortune. Angelica becomes a great success, thanks to constant commissions for portraits and paintings of historical subjects. She eventually befriends other artists, including celebrated portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds. Despite her determination to never marry, she becomes preoccupied with a mysterious Swedish count, and their relationship takes an expected turn. Later, Angelica and her family return to Italy, where she falls in with a community of artists and intellectuals in Rome. As she contemplates her future, Angelica must figure out what kind of love she wants, and how a woman in a sexist society can enjoy her freedom. Berman’s story of Angelica’s adventures among the nobility and other bohemian artists paints an illuminating yet subtly drawn picture of 18th-century society and the art world.

Top 100 Instructor Krista Dunton brings a level of excitement to Berkeley Hall Golf Academy that’s unparalleled.
Dunton’s unique, custom approach is matched by the award-winning technology at Berkeley Hall’s 33-acre Learning Center. “We have the technology to properly diagnose what’s going on with the golf ball, the golf club. I individualize what you can do with your body through bio-swing dynamics, because
everyone is built differently. No one is going to swing the golf club the same, nor should they, as we all have different physical structures. In my 25-plus years of teaching, what makes me different is I know what to leave alone and what to pinpoint and fix so you build a golf swing you can own and it can repeat on the course.”
Once on the course, Dunton works on the other elements of human skills: how you think, react to your shot, manage your emotions and develop great technical skills that repeat under pressure, with a good mental set that allows you to perform at your best.
“We are fortunate to have some of the best technology so we can measure and assess. We measure so we don’t guess, and the changes we make as your teachers and coaches are going to help you improve your game.”
We want to offer you something different, and customize it to you, the individual. I believe everyone has their own unique swing DNA. We work with what you have, and enhance that and make it better.
–Krista Dunton
DAY 1 We use technology to get a game plan of where you are and where you’re going to go to.
DAY 2 The process of getting your game on the course. How to think correctly, make it productive, implement swing changes under competition and pressure.
DAY 3 How to keep this going, and practice correctly and efficiently.
“We want to teach you how to manage variability. What I love about our Learning Center and two golf courses, is we’ve got every shot imaginable you can learn to play,” adds Dunton. “We teach you a variety of shots, different trajectories –so when you go on the course, you take those shots you learned in practice and tap into that with confidence.”

CHANGING SEASONS ON OUR COURSES
he beauty of golf in the Lowcountry is that no two months are ever quite the same. Our courses shift with the seasons, and behind the scenes, our agronomy team works year-round to ensure they remain in top condition.
SUMMER IN FULL SWING
Summer is the most demanding season for turf. While bermudagrass thrives in the heat, it takes extraordinary effort to keep conditions firm and fast. Frequent verticutting, heavier topdressing, and increased mowing are all required. Summer is also when we close courses for major aeration work, a vital process that relieves compaction and builds long-term turf health.
THE SUBTLE SHIFT OF FALL
As days shorten, bermudagrass slows its growth and begins preparing for dormancy. Fall is also one of the busiest golf seasons, so our team balances heavy play with critical maintenance.
Whether you play in July or December, you’ll experience the course in a new way.
– Adam Miller
Overseeding helps maintain color and playability – South Course fairways are overseeded each year, and this season we are adding overseeding to North Course tees, short game, and practice areas.
WINTER DORMANCY AND PLAYABILITY
By winter, bermudagrass usually rests in dormancy, giving the courses a golden hue while staying
firm and fast. In warmer winters, however, the turf doesn’t go fully dormant, leaving it fragile and more vulnerable to cart traffic. Careful management during this period is essential to ensure a healthy spring green-up.
REAWAKENING OF SPRING
From mid-February through April, the courses awaken. Bermudagrass breaks dormancy, greens up, and fills in. This is when fertility programs ramp up, aerification is scheduled, and irrigation is finetuned – all to prepare for another peak season of golf.
A YEAR-ROUND COMMITMENT
Every season brings unique challenges, but our team is dedicated to managing these transitions with precision and care. Whether you play in July or December, you’ll experience the course in a new way – and that rhythm of change is what makes golf in the Lowcountry so special.
