“ ” LETTER FROM OUR CEO
As pioneers in the chia industry from the outset in 2005, we have built our business model around healthy, highly nutritional, innovative, plant-based sustainable products, from cultivation to processing and final packaging.
Agricultural models need to undergo radical changes worldwide to reverse the adverse environmental impacts traditional, modern farming has had on the planet. Our sustainable approach has been ahead of its time, integrating the principles of Regenerative Agriculture since our very beginning in 2005. Our values and model help us mitigate the effects of climate change in our value chain today.
We believe we can help create a healthier food industry.

INDUSTRIAL LEADER IN CHIA SEED-BASED INGREDIENTS
2023 has undoubtedly been a "Chia Year” with Chia becoming increasingly recognized as a healthy, clean ingredient alternative in the food industry.
- Sandra Gillot, Benexia's CEO
Chia Seed now has an official "Chia Day" in the US National Calendar: March 23rd. This recognition underscores Chia's growing importance in the health food market, validated by coverage in prominent media such as the New York Times and Harvard Health Publishing.
Chia's exceptional nutritional profile has captured academic interest:
• Perfect balance of fiber
• High-quality essential proteins
• Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
• Excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids (ALA)
Recent scientific studies confirm chia's potential in preventing cardiovascular diseases and combating diabetes and obesity. For example, University of Toronto research highlights chia's role in promoting satiety and appetite control.
In 2023, the University of Oregon published a study that recognizes chia as a superfood with the potential to address climate change and world hunger (Fortune.com/well).
The chia market
The role and contribution of universities and food technology institutes is key to endorsing and amplifying the benefits of chia. The functionalities of the seed have been proven to be considered as a replacement for eggs, sugar, and some less desirable gums in the industry.
- Carolina Chica, Nutrition R&D and Regulatory Affairs Manager
”Chia is a sub-tropical crop from the Salvia family (Salvia Hispánica Labiatae) native to Central America. Industrial production of chia was developed in Argentina between 1995 and 2000, then continued to flourish in Bolivia, and finally in Paraguay, reaching a current yearly production of approximately 60,000 to 80,000 tons of chia seeds in the world. Chia consumer markets are mainly the USA and Europe, with each consuming approximately 30,000 to 40,000 tons a year. Export prices can vary between 2 and 4 dollars per kilo, depending on the quality.
Evolution of consumption
Mass consumption began between 2012 and 2014, showing a notable evolution over time. The increase in planted plot area in 2014 was an average of 15,000 hectares, while planting intentions for 2024 are projected at 150,000 hectares, reflecting an increase of 900% in the last 10 years. This growth is largely due to the increase in the consumption of healthy foods, a trend in which chia fits perfectly due to its nutritional contributions.
The chia market is beginning to take hold and grow. The fact that it is being investigated so much now is due to the recognition of extraordinary benefits for human health and for fighting world hunger. With its high Omega-3 content, its healthy fiber without carbohydrates, and its protein containing all essential amino acids, chia offers perfect nutrition. When used as an ingredient, chia powders are highly functional and can replace additives that are not recommended in food. Therefore, chia has an important place in the future of the food industry and can play a significant role thanks to its sustainable, functional, and healthy profile.
- Sandra Gillot, Benexia's CEO
Growth capacity of the chia industry
Chia´s agricultural production capacity has great growth potential since it is grown where wheat, sorghum, or soybeans are also produced.
Chia results in an interesting alternative crop for producers. The technology of sowing, harvesting, and cleaning is already quite well understood, though potential lies in improving the general know-how of the crop.
”The demand for chia has been increasing over the years, though the supply continues to be limited. Although it seems to be a “commodity,” chia is not listed on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) or Euronext in Europe. It is at an early stage of being included in the food industry.
Benexia has promoted Chia's introduction in the processed food industry. There are very few companies that process chia to be included in industrial product formulations. There is enormous potential here, not only because of its nutritional content, but also because of its functionalities. Benexia offers chia fiber and chia protein in powder form, allowing the food industry to include chia in baking recipes, snacks, fortified fruit drinks, purees, and other formulations.
- Remi Reguero, Technical Director,
Since its commencement in 2005, Benexia has been at the forefront of the chia industry, evolving from a chia grower to a leading Chia ingredient supplier. Our journey exemplifies our commitment to innovation and sustainability. In 2016, we inaugurated a stateof-the-art processing plant in Arica, Chile, with hightechnology processes uniquely developed for chia. This facility enables us to produce a diverse range of chia-based products, including oils, powders (high in protein and fiber), and food solutions for the global food industry.
Our sustainable supply model, developed with expertise over two decades, focuses on resource preservation and support for farming communities. By adopting regenerative agricultural practices, we mitigate the effects of global warming and natural resource depletion while ensuring consistent production yields. This approach not only benefits the environment but also guarantees a stable and high-quality supply chain for our partners.
Benexia's global presence is significant, with 94% of our production exported to markets in Asia, the USA, Australia, and Europe. Our sub-brand, Seeds of Wellness® (SOW), offers 100% natural, glutenfree products, catering to Halal, Kosher, non-GMO, and Organic consumers. We maintain rigorous food safety standards and hold certifications from leading global companies, ensuring the highest quality for our customers.

WHO WE ARE
In the early 1990s, the University of Arizona and the Argentine government launched “the North Western Argentina Regional Project” (NWARP), to develop the industrial production of alternative crops in Northwest of Argentina.
THE NWARP PROJECT HAD THE OBJECTIVE OF IMPROVING THE ECONOMIC CONDITION AND THE LIVES OF LOCAL FARMERS.
During this project, Chia Seeds captured the attention of a farmer's group for their exceptional nutritional benefits and potential as a sustainable food source. Those farmers set up a company to work on securing a long-term future for Chia Seeds and bring together independent growers, experts, and scientists.
Functional Products Trading Arica (FPTA), now Benexia S.A., was established in 2005 as an association between growers with experience in selecting and cultivating chia seeds, and a young commercial team with the necessary commercial, scientific, and financial support for the project.
Benexia was created with a structure that we believed would be the most sustainable over time in terms of economic performance, as well as the most environmentally and socially responsible. By involving all the stakeholders in our company and our projects, we successfully integrated activities in the fields with raw material industrial processing, marketing and sales.
Throughout the years, the two majority shareholders in the agricultural production and commercial branches have encouraged ethical, fair, and positive relations within our team and fair remuneration with our partners and suppliers.
With the dream of making chia seeds an available source of important nutrients such as plant-based omega-3 for humanity in the coming years, our agricultural partners have developed a production model that respects local water and soil resources.
Our team consists of over one hundred employees based in the cities of Arica and Santiago in Chile, as well as in Bolivia and Paraguay. We are also associated with independent farmers in Bolivia and Paraguay to ensure the quality and availability of supply for our different markets.
We offer a range of all-natural, 100% traceable chiabased ingredients.

REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE: CHANGING THE PARADIGM, PARTNERING WITH NATURE
Benexia continues to grow as a highly valued producer in the agricultural sector in Bolivia, Paraguay, and Argentina: Our advice on presowing, cultivation, management, harvesting activities, the provision of excellent genetics, and the seriousness in all productive-commercial transactions have established our company as a leading reference point. This allows us to grow and expand our planting area while seeking to minimize the climatic risks inherent in the activity.
Our Farming Practices
- Alberto Baracatt, President, responsible for the group's agricultural activities
”Our premium products are crafted with the highest quality and nutritional chia, achievable by adhering to the highest standards of regenerative agriculture: beneficial to both our consumers and the environment. We are deeply committed to REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE, which focuses on regenerating and revitalizing the soil and environment.
Our farming practices lower greenhouse gas emissions and carbon and Water Footprints, preserve soil nutrients and water absorption, reduce soil erosion, protect biodiversity, and contribute to thriving local communities and economies.
Our key regenerative farming practices include NO-TILL, CROP ROTATION and surrounding our fields with 30 to 50-meter-wide NATURAL BARRIERS.
Our farms use ONLY RAINWATER as a watering source, preserving our natural water reserves.
Our fields are surrounded by NATURAL BARRIERS, which help sustain and facilitate the wellbeing and reproduction of biodiversity.
We preserve the soil’s nutrients, reduce CO2 emissions and reduce water and soil erosion with our NO-TILL PRACTICES.
Our CROP ROTATION PRACTICES promote environmentally sustainable and reliable local economic activity as well as crop resilience.
Our agricultural partners are completely aligned with and committed to our same principles with the community, people and environment.
No-till practices
Our no-till methods protect the soil from erosion and damage caused by conventional tillage. By preserving the soil structure, we promote its natural regeneration of essential nutrients, ensuring proper growth and optimal nutritional quality of our chia.
Optimized crop rotation
Every crop has unique nutrient requirements as well as carbon uptake levels. By alternating crop cultivations with different plant species, we help maintain the soil's nutrient balance. We rotate our chia crops with soy, sorghum, sunflower, bean, corn, and pasture, which not only benefits the soil and the environment, but also plays a crucial role in sustaining local production and supporting neighboring communities throughout the year by maintaining local economical activities throughout the year.
lor CROP ROTATION
Nutrient management sporcyhtlaeH tnocesaesiD
At Benexia, crop rotation in our fields provides numerous benefits:
Enhances soil structure and nutrients.
Restores soil fertility, increasing crop yields and improving crop quality.
Prevents soil erosion thanks to a 30 to 50-centimeter layer of organic residues on topsoil that will efficiently absorb water.
Prevents the concentration of pests and diseases, reducing the need for herbicides and fertilizers

Natural Barriers:
Protecting Local Flora and Fauna
Benexia's commitment to sustainable practices includes protecting natural species through the preservation of surrounding forest areas and promoting environmentally-friendly and productive agriculture that benefits local communities. Preservation of natural species is a priority in our production fields, each surrounded by a 40-meter perimeter of dense native forest and diverse vegetation.
This arrangement protects our crops from the wind, the primary cause of soil erosion, while protecting plant and animal diversity by allowing biodiversity to circulate freely along a natural forest highway. Risk assessments of farming activities and their effects on local flora and fauna are carried out regularly, and measures are taken to ensure safe coexistence and minimize collateral damage. Additionally, these barriers help reduce the potential displacement of soil by runoff, thus further strengthening the soil while promoting native biodiversity and plant pollination.
Natural Irrigation
Our farms rely solely on rainwater for irrigation, thus helping to preserve natural water reserves. Our mighty chia grows in its natural habitat, where favorable weather conditions provide sufficient rainfall, eliminating the need for artificial irrigation.
PRESERVING WATER RESOURCES
At Benexia, preserving water resources is a top priority at every stage of our production chain.
We rely exclusively on rainwater throughout our agricultural process and maintain a water-free approach in our cleaning, pasteurization, production, and packaging processes.
Our industrial plant is located in one of Chile´s driest regions, making water preservation a core consideration in every decision. We have designed our production processes to eliminate the need for water usage, from cleaning our seeds to our cutting-edge pasteurization system and production technologies during ingredient processing.
At Benexia, we minimize our water consumption and ensure that the water we don't use remains uncontaminated by avoiding chemicals and solvents in our production process. Additionally, we use the entire chia crop, leaving no waste at the end of our line.
These practices ensure that we avoid contamination of nearby water sources and the natural habitats surrounding our fields. We do not require a wastewater treatment process, as we do not use water in our agricultural or industrial activities. As a result, we produce no gray water during our agricultural, cleaning, or production processes.
Nonetheless, we are developing a project to treat water at our plant. We aim to process the water used on site at our plant and eventually provide additional drinking water for our community in Arica. This project involves analyzing the amount of water that can be used from our source while ensuring its preservation according to its replenishment rate.
CLIMATE CONTROL PROJECT WITH LOW ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT IN ARICA PLANT
Sustainability and innovation are at the core of our fundamental pillars. At Benexia our practices and processes are aligned with the highest standards of quality and efficiency. In 2021, we implemented an innovative climate control project to reduce the temperature inside our storage facilities and provide a positive pressure P + > 10 [Pa] in all process areas, reduce energy consumption, and minimize our environmental impact. This low environmental impact air injection and extraction system has high quality, effective filters [G4 -> F9] which ensure an interior atmosphere that protects the safety of our products and ensures compliance with the most demanding international standards in the Food industry. With this project, we achieved an 82% reduction in our greenhouse gas (GHG) emission factor from the electrical system and improved the average ambient temperature within the plant from 28°C to 23°C.
Effective Benefits:
- Positive pressure within the entire facility.
- G4 Filter: Used as a pre-filter for the F9 filter, the G4 guarantees up to 90% retention of air particles.
- F9 Filter: Guarantees up to 95% retention of air particles, excellent for detaining pollen, spores, mold, fine particles, bacteria and viruses.
- Improved pest control.
- Eliminates environmental pollution throughout the entire production and packaging process.
- Improved oxygenation in all production areas.
- Controlled humidity, regulated temperature, and reduced odors throughout the production process.
- Improved equipment performance in the production line considerably (extending life by 15 to 20 years).

Sustainable Packaging
Benexia carefully selects packaging materials to ensure the sustainability we work so hard for during farming and production is maintained until the final product is produced. Our ingredient packaging is designed to meet the safest food grade requirements while minimizing materials used wherever possible.
We deliver our seeds (Benexia Chia LM), fiber (XIA Powder 435W LM), and protein (XIA Powder 125W LM) in paper bags lined with plastic. For larger volumes of our chia oil (Benexia Xia Oil) packaging, we have initiated a new project to replace our traditional oil drums with plastic-lined cardboard Spacekraft® packaging. In January 2017, we significantly reduced our environmental impact by replacing nearly all our direct-to-consumer Seeds of Wellness® brand chia seed plastic containers with more ecological doy packs.
Benexia has consistently prioritized selecting the best possible packaging materials available. To continue in that line, we’ve initiated a project to collect and analyze environmental data on all the packaging materials used across our products, enabling us to make the most efficient possible improvements. We are committed to increasing the amount of recyclable packaging in our Seeds of Wellness® brand products with a goal of making 95% of all our packaging recyclable or compostable by 2030.

Our Halal and Kosher certifications also underline our commitment to providing products that respect the specific dietary practices of different cultures and religions. By adhering to these rigorous standards and proven protocols, we demonstrate our commitment to offering our customers safe, high-quality products that comply with the most demanding international food safety standards.
FSSC22000 is a comprehensive food safety standard that integrates ISO requirements specific to the food industry, ensuring food safety throughout the supply chain. It is recognized by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), which means it meets international food safety standards and is widely accepted by organizations and supply chains worldwide.
We were the first to obtain EFSA authorizations for chia seeds and their derivatives. These approvals are based on rigorous scientific assessments aimed at guaranteeing the safety of substances used in the food and agricultural industries while protecting public health and the environment. They ensure that our products meet the highest safety standards, reinforcing consumer confidence in the quality of food products on the European market.
We follow the guidelines of the GLOBAL GAP standards in all our fields: an internationally recognized standard that sets guidelines for establishing good agricultural practices that ensure the quality and safety of fruit, vegetables, and other food products. It enhances access to global markets by providing trusted assurances of compliance with these high standards.
Our silos and cleaning facilities are GMP certified. GMP certification is a set of rigorous standards and guidelines designed to ensure that pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and other consumer products are manufactured under optimum conditions of quality, safety and efficiency. It ensures product quality throughout the entire manufacturing process, from receipt of raw materials to distribution of the finished product. Additionally, GMP certification promotes regulatory compliance, consumer confidence, and corporate reputation, all essential for maintaining competitiveness in the marketplace.
Our silos and cleaning facilities are HACCP certified. HACCP certification is a food safety management system designed to identify, assess and control food safety risks throughout the production chain. Its primary value lies in its proactive approach to preventing food hazards and ensuring food safety throughout the production chain, from receipt of raw materials to distributing the finished product. By emphasizing prevention over mere inspection of finished products, HACCP certification significantly reduces the risk of contamination and foodborne illness, ensuring consumer protection and regulatory compliance for food businesses.
We have certified ingredients since 2016 with the European (EOS), United States (NOP), Canadian (COR) and Chilean standards. Organic certifications ensure our products are free of chemicals and that we have good agricultural, processing and storage practices, as well as sustainability. This is verified in the field with analysis of our seeds, checking they are not contaminated with agrochemicals, and that they are GMO-free. These standards also verify that no unauthorized chemicals or pesticides are used during processing.
FDA recognizes chia seeds as safe for use in food products without requiring prior approval from the administration, provided they comply with good practices and specified conditions. We also ensure full compliance with import regulation in Australia, and are actively working on Chinese regulations.
