I am immensely proud of our community which has grown much since it was founded in 1977. We have indeed reached a very important milestone of 45 years of existence and of service to the Filipino-American community!

A little fun fact I would like to share with you is how we in the Executive Committee paid tribute to our 45th Year Anniversary by delivering some of our programs tied with the number 45 this past year

During the annual tree planting in February, we lovingly dedicated the first 45 saplings we potted to the FILAM (Filipino-American) community We prayed that those saplings will grow to become big and strong trees providing ample support to the environment just like how our past FILAM leaders before us courageously led us to where and what we are now.

At our Easter Picnic, we playfully hid 45 golden eggs that were intended for our unsuspecting children to claim for much bigger prizes once found. We saw how those 45 golden eggs brought tremendous happiness to the kids. We aspire to bring more activities that would bring parents and children together and foster stronger bonds and relationships with other families to become a much stronger FILAM community.

And as we gathered 45 (and more) reynas, sagalas, escorts and angels during our yearly Santacruzan, we witnessed how our youth beamed with pride as they participated in the procession to showcase our culture We dream that our youth will continue to embrace their heritage and pass it on to the future generation

Upon planning for this year’s Pasko Sa Memphis, we told ourselves in jest that we should close our 45th year with 450 guests to celebrate with Little did we know that it will become a reality! Tonight’s event is the culmination of almost five months’ worth of planning, training, and strategizing We have about 150 performers gathered in one stage tonight before an audience of 450 people Tonight’s event is an confirmation that if members of the community work together, great things can be accomplished!

Here’s to us working together for the next 45 years! And more!

This is always my favorite time of the year. It is the time we come together as a Filipino-American community and exchange laughs, make memories, and reflect on what this year brought. I hope as you read this message, that you not only reflect on the memories you share with friends and family, but also think about the growth the Memphis, Filipino-American Community has had in the past 45 years.

Wow – this organization has been advocating, educating, and celebrating Filipino history, tradition, and comradery for 45 amazing years. The longevity of this organization is only attributable to all those who come before us and our amazing supporters like you. So, at this moment, I would like to thank you for the gracious support you have given and continue to give through all these years. We would not be where we are without you.

As I reflect on the celebration of our 45 years, the one question that rings in my head is the same question I was repeatedly asked when I first ran to be a director: Why FILAM? This question was asked by even the most loyal of FILAM supporters, and tonight, I am here to give my answer as a way to commemorate our 45 years. FILAMemphis serves each person in the way they need it to. FILAM is for the immigrant who uprooted their life and had to leave behind family, friends, and familiarity for the unknown. FILAM is for the first generation Filipino-American children who have to navigate two different cultures and merge it into one. FILAM is for the family and friends who have an affinity to the Filipino community by marriage, by friendship, or by admiration. FILAM is for everyone.

I end this message to say – choose FILAMemphis in the same way FILAMemphis chooses you. For 45 long years, this organization has been a home to many, and I know it will serve as a home for many to come in the next 45 years. I am more than honored and proud to have a community like this, and I hope you are as well. Happy 45 years FILAMemphis, Inc. community, whether as an immigrant, a first-generation Filipino-American, or simply a friend of the community, you will always have a home here.

The Philippine Jota was among the most popular dances during the Spanish colonial period in the Philippines and up to the early 20th century. It was originally performed by Señoritas and Caballeros in social gatherings (like wedding, parties and baptismal) during the Spanish period in the Philippines, and the dancers wears traditional regional costumes The Filipinos adapted this lively and delightful dance with different versions These versions are combinations of Spanish and Filipino dance steps and music

Notable differences between the Philippine and Spanish jotas are the use of unstrung bamboo castanets The jota is accompanied by the Philippine rondalla often consisting of a bandurria, guitar, bass and other mandolin-type instruments

NATIONAL DANCE OF THE PHILIPPINES

Tinikling is a traditional Philippine folk dance which originated during the Spanish colonial era. The dance involves at least two people beating, tapping, and sliding bamboo poles on the ground and against each other in coordination with one or more dancers who step over and in between the poles in a dance

Tinikling is often described as a folk dance that represents the attempts of Filipino rice farmers to catch and prevent the Tikling bird from stealing ripe rice grains from the fields
