Register online at www.bedfordrecreation.org or in person, by mail or by fax. Registration form is in this brochure for non-online registration. Tuition must be paid at the time of registration. We do not prorate. We accept VISA, MasterCard, AmEx and Discover. Checks should be made payable to the Town of Bedford. There is a $25 penalty fee for returned checks. Those requiring special assistance, please contact the Recreation Director.

Scholarship Fund

In order to continue offering quality programs at affordable costs, please consider donating to our scholarship fund. Bedford Recreation's goal is never to turn away an interested participant due to economic hardship. With your help of $5, $10, $25 (or more!), we will be able to continue this practice.

Refund/Cancellation Policy

Notice must be given 5 business days prior to program start for refund. If the required notice is given refunds will be issued less 10% of the cost of the program. Medical refunds given after a program has begun will be prorated and the 10% fee will be charged. Other exceptions are noted in program descriptions.

Photo Permission

Participants in Bedford Recreation sponsored activities permit the taking of photos and videos of themselves and their children for publication and use. Instructions to the contrary must be made in writing to the Recreation Director.

Bicycle Escapes

Give a Great Gift!

Mary Hurley and her daughter Caitlin are once again offering guided bike rides this Spring. Mary looks forward to catching up with some of you and inviting newbies to join this energetic group. Get out your E-bike, road or touring bike and join us for outdoor fun on two wheels! We will be riding mostly back roads in various towns each week, offering some history, some chatting and lots of laughter. This is intermediate level riding; you should be able to ride about 10 to 12 miles an hour and ride 15-17 miles. Spring Mystery Walks

Discover new places to hike and hear tales about Native American settlers and esteemed writers such as Alcott and Emerson. Walks are typically four to five miles and usually rain or shine. Mary, a long time resident of Bedford, has been the spirited leader of hikes, bike trips and other marvelous adventures for more than 30 years in our local area of historic New England. Previously, she worked as the Adult Education Coordinator for the Bedford Public Schools. Her passion has turned into quality leisure time. Now she lives to PLAY. She feels that the reason that folks enroll is for friendship and love of the outdoors. Learning about our region and how it relates to us and to history is her passion. The shared knowledge of these connections and a desire for all of us to feel as though we are young forever is why she continues to lead people through the woods.

Forage Workshop: A Taste of Spring

Instructor: Emily Makrez, MS, Owner of F-Word Farm (Farming, Foraging and Fermenting) It’s amazing how much food is around us. Come learn about some common and easy to ID spring edibles through a talk, plenty of pictures, and real life examples. You will learn how to ID, prepare, and eat/use them. This class will focus on common and easy to ID edibles (greens & some mushrooms) led by Emily Makrez, owner of F-Word Farm and educator on all things farming, foraging and fermenting related. Emily is the owner of F-Word Farm and educator on all things fermenting, farming, and foraging related. She left her job in sales to pursue her true passion in farming, fermenting, and foraging. She's passionate about bringing the joy of microbes to others through explanations and demos of all the fermented foods we know and love; vinegar, pickles, hot sauce, sauerkraut, miso, and more! She supplies fresh produce to local restaurants, sells craft vinegar at farmer’s markets, and teaches classes on food, farming, fermenting, foraging and other fun stuff . Noticing Nature Workshop: An Introduction to Nature Journaling

Instructor: Molly Torrey, Nature Artist and Educator

What is nature journaling? A nature journal is a place to record your personal observations of the natural world, through words, pictures and numbers. You do not need to be an artist or have advanced drawing skills to create a nature journaling page! In this workshop, you will be guided through the steps of creating a nature journal page and come away with ideas for building a regular practice of nature journaling into your schedule. Molly is a Bedford-based nature artist and educator with a passion to connect people to nature through observation and focused attention. The practice of keeping a nature journal has allowed her to connect two of her lifelong joys - art and nature. From 2013-2023, she lived in the United Arab Emirates with her husband and three boys. Exploring the desert, mountains and mangrove forests of Arabia with her journal, she facilitated workshops that introduced people to the practice of keeping a nature journal and started a nature journal club in her city. Now back in Massachusetts, she hopes to share the joy of rediscovering New England’s natural spaces and building a community of nature journalers. Here at Mango Bay Equestrian, we promote learning how to communicate with our horses safely, effectively and kindly on the ground before hopping in the saddle. During this three class series you will learn how to safely work around horses and how to communicate with horses through body language. Diane has been a professional chef for thirty-five years, working in high end gourmet establishments as well as catering. She owned the Brickyard Café in Cambridge, an eclectic and popular café style restaurant and Sassy River Sauces, a specialty food company, selling at farmer’s markets and major food establishments. Diane has co-authored a Zone cookbook about healthy eating and she worked as a food consultant and developed recipes for a major specialty food company. She is now a personal chef with clients in the Boston area. Her teaching career spans 30 years, with Italian cooking her specialty. Mixed Media Workshop: Dried Flowers & Artistic Prints

Instructor: Taline Saatjian, artist

Interested in mixed media art? Join Taline for a hands-on creative session where art meets nature! In this workshop, you’ll create beautiful 5x5 wooden tiles artworks by combining delicate dried flowers, leaves and unique prints crafted by the artist. Guided step by step, you’ll explore layering techniques, composition tips and sealing methods to design your own one of a kind piece. Taline is a Lebanese Armenian who moved to the US in 2014 with a BA in graphic design and a background in painting. Her style combines fine art and graphic art. Taline designs and makes her own prints made of gelliplate which she uses to create wall art, greeting cards, and paintings. Taline is a long-time member of the Bedford Arts and Crafts Society. Linocut Printmaking Workshop

Instructor: Brooke Lambert, artist

Students will be introduced to the printmaking process of linocut. The class will cover techniques in carving linoleum, composition, ink mixing, and printing. At their own pace students will learn how to create a design and carve it in linoleum using carving tools. Students will learn how to ink and print their linoleum blocks by hand. In a relaxed and welcoming environment students will create many beautiful prints of their own as well as collaborate with their classmates. Acrylic Painting Workshop

Instructor: Brooke Lambert, artist

Learn how to create beautiful and colorful acrylic paintings! In this class you will be introduced to painting with acrylic, including techniques in color mixing, observational painting, and composition. At your own pace you will learn how to paint a still-life using acrylic paint in a relaxed and welcoming environment. This class will cover wet on wet and wet and dry brush techniques, sgraffito/combing, overlays/glazing, gel medium pattern making, and masking. You will come away from this class with beautiful paintings of your own and a greater understanding and appreciation for the medium of acrylic painting. Making Silver Jewelry with Metal Clay Workshop

Instructor: Hilary Taylor, Silversmith/Jeweler, owner Merlin’s Silver Star Studio, West Concord Join Hilary for a unique opportunity to make jewelry using metal clay that is embedded with microns of silver! You will design and make your piece using textures, natural elements and stamps. Once dried the pieces are fired and it is during this process that the clay burns off and you are left with your piece in silver. You will have enough supplies to make a small pair of earrings and a small pendant or you may choose to use all of your materials for one larger piece. Please look through your home and outdoors for textures that you may want to capture in silver such as a piece of lace, a leaf, silverware or a favorite stamp....endless things out there (Hilary will also have many textures to choose from!) Once your piece is completed, they will be fired in ’s studio and will be brought back to the Recreation Department for pick up in 7-10 days (email will be sent when ready). Drawing with Confidence

Instructor: Namrata Siviya, artist, owner of The Purple Pencil Art Studio

Draw confidently and boldly while exploring charcoal, pencil and soft pastels. It’s a series of four drawing classes to help you kickstart and maintain a sketching habit. We will practice observation, go over basics like perspective and composition, and experiment with intuitive drawing. All levels welcome! Materials list: pencils 2b and 6b, soft vine charcoal, sketchbook, erasers and pencil sharpeners. Soft Pastels will be provided for use during the class though you are welcome to bring your own. Namrata Siviya received her BFA in Applied Art at Govt. College for Art in Chandigarh, India. She went on to study filmmaking at National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad to further explore visual language. Through her drawings and paintings, she explores human nature, the self and the absurdities of our modern, daily lives. She is passionate about examining the process of making art and its role in healing. She works from her studio, The Purple Pencil, in Bedford, MA, where she also holds classes and workshops as a way to provide a nurturing space for others and support their creative journeys. Pysanky: Painted Easter Eggs

Instructor: Hanka Robertson

Pysanky (pee-san-key) are decorated eggs created by using a written-wax batik method with traditional folk motifs and designs. In this workshop, you will learn how to draw on a whole plain white chicken egg with a special pen (kistka) and melted wax, then dye the egg with special dyes. The drawing and dyeing are repeated several times as each layer of the design is applied until the egg is finished at which time the egg is blown out, the wax removed, and a ribbon is threaded through. Everyone will receive an egg to work on and a kistka to use. Hanka will share a short history of Pysanky, instructions with an explanation of the process, motifs and pictures for design inspiration. She will provide information on how to care for the completed egg, and provide a container in which to take the egg home. All supplies are provided. Hanka was born in Slovenia and as a child learned to make Pysanky from her mother who was from the former Czechoslovakia where making Pysanky every Eastertime was a tradition. Hanka is an avid Embroiderer and a member of the American Needlepoint Guild and the New England Lace Guild.

Be Creative: Art & Craft

Introduction to Botanical Cyanotype Papers

Instructor: Tony (a) Lemos, artist, Tonya Lemos Arts

Cyanotypes Prints (Prussian-blue image on a white background) also known as ferro-prussiate, blue print process or simply as sun prints, were invented and named by Sir John Herschel in 1842 and are one of the oldest photographic processes. This method was popularized by Anna Atkins, one of a handful of women working in photography in the mid-1800s who published multiple botanical books. Cyanotypes are one of the easiest photographic printing techniques and can easily be made at home without expensive equipment or a photography darkroom. In this workshop, you will learn how to make dry and wet cyanotypes from found plant material, as well as experiment with kitchen spices and suds, we will work with the sun as our UV light source. The chemicals needed are easy to source and inexpensive (because there are no precious metals involved). This class would be great for any creative being and/or plant lover who wants to jump into the world of alternative photographic printing techniques. Each student will leave with multiple prints and an eagerness to go home and make more! All levels welcome. Please wear art-appropriate clothing and also warm clothes to go outside briefly. A life-long environmentalist and plant person, Tony(a) Lemos is a process based, nature inspired, conceptual artist who works at the intersection of art and herbalism. She has been teaching workshops around New England for over 25 years. Presently her work includes eco-printing, photopolymer printmaking as well alternative photography methods, often combining mixed media and found objects into artist books. She likes to explore symbolism from her ancestry (Greek/Middle East) while deepening her sense of place on Pocumtuc/Nipmuc territory where she has called home for over 30 years. Digital Photography

Instructor: Fran Blaschke, Photographer

Are you disappointed by the images you get with your fancy digital SLR or MIRRORLESS camera? Are you intimidated by the innumerable buttons, dials and menus on your camera? This introductory course is designed to demystify your digital camera, giving you a strong foundation in understanding and using the basic functions. Proper exposure (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), histogram, white balance, camera shooting modes and focusing modes, lenses, digital file types, file resolution and other fundamental controls will be covered. You must have a digital SLR or MIRRORLESS camera with adjustable exposure settings and the owner’s manual for your camera. This class in collaboration with Concord-Carlisle Community Education. Digital Photography II

We will build on the foundation from Digital Photography I as we start by reviewing the basics and then moving on to more fundamentals. In addition to learning new technical skills – including additional camera functions and an introduction to the use of flash - we will address the visual elements of making images, helping you elevate your skills from taking snapshots to making photographs. Discussions include: identifying and isolating the subject, elements of composition, and effective use of color in your photographs. Weekly critique sessions address technical and aesthetic considerations as you are challenged to make conscious decisions as you use your cameras. Punch Needle Key Holder with Flowers Designs

In this popular one-day workshop, you have the opportunity to carve your own stone, an art form that is not typically accessible. Scott graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in fine arts. While working as a resident sculptor at the Vermont Marble Exhibit, he carved a 5,000 pound block of Vermont Marble. Scott relocated to the Boston area where he started exhibiting his work in many galleries and universities. He is a member of The New England Sculptors Association and he has been teaching at several major sculptural institutions in the Boston area.

Sacred Space Essential Oil Rescue Relief Kit

Come spend the night with friends crafting a DIY essential oil rescue relief kit. We will create a safe, non-toxic insect repellent that is sure to keep those pesky bugs away! An outdoor candle that is as effective as a citronella candle, but smells amazing. We will be using essential oils, fruit, and herbs to create a mason jar with a floating candle. This is both beautiful and effective to maximize your enjoyment outside during the warmer months. Two relief items that we will create are a soothing oil for bug bites that helps to alleviate the itch and an after-sun soothing spray for sunburns. Stimulate Your Vagus Nerve to Create Overall Well-being Workshop (virtual)

This workshop is for anyone that feels overwhelmed at times and has noticed changes in mood such as irritability, mood swings, anxiety or feelings of depression. You may be suffering with negative GI symptoms, fatigue, brain fog or muscle weakness. The vagus nerve acts as the communication pathway between the brain and the internal organs. It is primarily responsible for regulating vital bodily functions like, digestion, heart rate, breathing, and mood. Oscar has been a Tai Chi practitioner for more than 30 years. He has been trained and qualified by OHAA (Oriental Healing Arts Association) and he has been teaching Tai Chi for several years. Oscar started learning Judo and Chinese martial arts in Hong Kong as a young man where he was a Judo student of the coach who led the Hong Kong Judo team to the Olympics in 1967. Nick fell in love with partner dancing over 14 years ago through contra, blues, and fusion dancing. Seven years ago he left his bio chemistry job to pursue his passion and share his love of dancing as a professional ballroom teacher. As a professional dance teacher, Nick discovered that he loved teaching and supporting other teachers. This interest led Nick to make another career jump and start his own independent dance studio with his partner Maretta. Their goal is to build community and connection through ballroom and partner dancing. At Ignis, they try to make dancing accessible by offering affordable dance lessons, while supporting local artists to build successful and financially viable careers as dance teachers. Co-Ed Outdoor Boot Camp

What better way to begin a fitness program or up the ante on the one you already have in a supportive, non-threatening class environment. Combining cardio and strength conditioning with use of full body, tires, hills, bleachers and more for a challenging but fun outdoor workout. Modifications are always available and encouraged for anyone with restrictions. Sneakers, outdoor workout attire and water a must. Classes held rain/shine. Age 16+ (max 30)

Sandy grew up in Maine. She received her undergraduate degree in Business at Bentley College. She began teaching fitness classes in college. Sandy attended the Massage Institute of New England, became a CLMT, and had her own practice in Waltham for 15 years. Sandy has been teaching Fitness classes and working as a Personal trainer for more than two decades. She has certification through AFAA, ACE and various other programs.

Kyle is a PTR certified tennis instructor who has been teaching both children and adults for nearly three decades. He is a resident professional instructor at the Dedham Health and Athletic complex. Kyle has been offering classes in Bedford for 13 years and he offers instruction to all levels and ages. He is also certified in safe play and cardio tennis. Kyle is a Bedford resident where he has raised his two daughters.

Learn to Play (Beginner): Here is your chance to learn the fundamentals of the fastest growing sport in the country. Pickleball is a combination of tennis, racquetball, and ping-pong played by four people on a half size tennis court with paddles and a plastic polyball. Classes include learning the rules, scoring, hitting drills, strategy and game play. It’s great exercise and easy to learn! Equipment will be provided if needed. Next Level (Advanced Beginner/Low Intermediate) Are you an “improving” your game to the next level? This clinic is for the player that can serve, score, and keep the ball in play. Archery Outdoors!

Get outside this season to enjoy learning a fun and relaxing Olympic sport: recurve archery! This martial art archery only requires patience, focus and discipline to succeed with emphasis placed on the technique rather than just the aiming. Build character, selfesteem and confidence with each triumph and tribulation on the range as you work hard to achieve consistent success. Summer Outdoor Basketball League

Basketball returns to the outdoor courts at BHS this summer for the 12th season of the league. The season is June 10 - August 5. There will be 10 games plus playoffs. Playoffs will be held in A and B divisions to accommodate both competitive and recreational teams. All players must be Bedford residents, Bedford High School graduates or employed by the Town of Bedford. The cost includes uniforms, 2 patched officials/game, 2 scorekeepers/game and playoff games for all league members. Games will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays and some additional weeknights during the season as needed. Fee: $1,000 Per Team /$1,250 after June 10 deadline

A mandatory meeting will be held at 12 Mudge Way, Flint Room (near Recreation Office) on Thursday, May 22 at 7 pm. All Captains/Team representatives and free agents must attend. Rosters and team fees must be submitted by June 6. Unattached players may put their names on a free agent list by contacting the Recreation Department (will be placed if space is available).
