SUMMER STYLING:

Your Guide for the Season

Summer is here, and it’s time to embrace the sun-kissed days with a winning wardrobe. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with your outfits and enjoy the vibrant colours and relaxed silhouettes of the season. Whether you’re lounging by the beach, attending a garden party, having a park picnic with the family, or cheering at the horse races, Beautiful South has got you covered.

BEACH BLISS: SUN, SAND, AND STYLE

The beach can be your canvas for carefree fashion. When it comes to beachwear, the key is to opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics that keep you cool under the sun. Whether it’s one-piece swimming costumes, lightweight kaftans, or maxi dresses, comfort and confidence are key. Don’t forget your oversized sunhats—not only will they shield you from the sun, but you’ll be super stylish, too. Pair them with statement beach bags and sunglasses. Whether you’re at West Wittering, Ibiza, or Santorini, you’ll be the epitome of beach glam.

Picnic Perfection: PARK DAYS DONE RIGHT

Who says picnics can’t be stylish? It’s time to pack your basket and head to the park! We have beautiful woodlands and parks within the area, proving to be the perfect day out. A woven basket bag is practical and a perfect summer statement piece. We recommend choosing light, moveable materials like cotton or linen for style, comfort and ease. It’s also the perfect opportunity to bring out summer patterns, such as gingham, stripes and florals.

RACE-DAY GLAM: WINNING AT

THE RACES AND FASHION

The races are all about fun, elegance and sophistication. Whether you’re attending Fontwell, Goodwood, or somewhere further afield, your outfit will be a top priority. Summer is your time to go bright, bold and colourful. Opt for a statement dress or a jumpsuit as your base. This is the most important part, which all other aspects of your look, will centre around. Fascinators or hats are race course essentials, so pick one that compliments your outfit.

Garden Party: A FLORAL AFFAIR

You can’t beat summer BBQs, games, and Pimms in the garden. Whether you’re attending a casual get-together or something smarter, it’s the perfect opportunity to show off your chic, summery ensembles. Step into a space where fashion blooms as vibrantly as the flowers around you. This season, we are loving light linen tops and statement skirts in floral prints. Style with a lightweight pashmina or scarf. It can be a sensible addition when the sun goes down, but your evening has continued.

new era of fitness is dawning—one that prioritises not just physical health, but also the mental and emotional wellbeing fostered by group exercise.

In recent years, the fitness industry has witnessed a surge in the popularity of group workouts and social sports, with experts predicting that this trend will only continue to gain momentum in the post-pandemic landscape.

THE POWER OF WE How Group Exercise is

Shaping the POST-PANDEMIC

FITNESS LANDSCAPE

Group exercise offers more than just a chance to break a sweat; it provides a sense of belonging and community that is essential for overall well-being. Whether it’s a high-energy dance class, a challenging boot camp session, or weekend long run with a local running club, the camaraderie and support found in group settings can be a powerful motivator for individuals striving to reach their fitness goals.

One of the key benefits of group exercise is the social interaction it facilitates. After months of isolation and distancing, people are craving human connection more than ever before. Group workouts offer an opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, forge new friendships, and strengthen existing bonds—all while working towards a common goal of better health.

Moreover, the accountability factor inherent in group exercise can significantly boost adherence to a fitness routine. When you know that others are counting on you to show up, it becomes harder to skip a workout. This accountability not only helps individuals stay on track with their fitness goals but also fosters a sense of responsibility towards the group, creating a supportive environment where everyone is invested in each other’s success.

Beyond the physical benefits, group exercise also has a profound impact on mental health. The sense of accomplishment experienced during a group workout can alleviate stress, reduce feelings

AFTER MONTHS OF ISOLATION AND DISTANCING, PEOPLE ARE CRAVING HUMAN CONNECTION MORE THAN EVER BEFORE.

of loneliness, and boost mood. Research has shown that exercising in a group setting can increase levels of feel-good hormones like endorphins and oxytocin, leading to a greater sense of happiness and well-being.

In addition to traditional group fitness classes, social sports leagues have also seen a resurgence in popularity. From football, tennis, cricket or hockey, these recreational leagues offer a fun and inclusive way to stay active while connecting with others. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or a complete beginner, there’s a place for everyone on the field or court.

As individuals seek to rebuild connections and prioritise their health and happiness, the sense of community fostered by group workouts and social sports will continue to be a driving force in shaping the way we approach fitness in the years to come. So lace up your trainers, grab your friends, and join the movement.

BECAUSE WHEN WE SWEAT TOGETHER, WE THRIVE TOGETHER.

Celebrating What Makes You Unique

In a world inundated with airbrushed images and unattainable beauty standards, the quest for authenticity has never been more vital. As society evolves, so too do our perceptions of beauty. This article aims not to relay the latest body or beauty trends but rather serves as a poignant reminder that the idea of 'beauty' transcends weight, race, and age. It instead advocates for a collective shift towards self-acceptance and empowerment.

Today, more and more women are challenging the conventional notions of beauty that have chased generations like shadows. It's clear how the unrealistic standards, perpetuated by media and societal pressures, have fostered feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. However, amidst this cultural landscape, there is a bright beacon of hope: the power of solidarity among women to uplift and celebrate each other's inherent beauty.

The act of embracing one's authentic self should be at the core of everything we do, especially when it comes to beauty. Slowly but steadily, we are seeing a paradigm shift prioritising inner beauty, self-love, and acceptance over superficial ideals. In a world fixated on outward appearances, people at the forefront of this celebration of uniqueness urge women to reclaim their narratives, recognising that true beauty emanates from confidence, kindness, and authenticity.

We know by now that what constitutes 'beautiful' in the eyes of the media changes as often as the seasons. We've got the swinging sixties (c. 1960s), then the supermodel era (c. 1980s), the heroin

chic era (c. 1990s), through to today with the postmodern beauty era (c. 2000s). To understand beauty in its truest form is to understand that it's not about conforming to the latest trend brought to fruition through 'Hollywoodisation' - it is about being comfortable in your skin.

The importance of collective support cannot be downplayed in the journey towards selfacceptance. People must uplift and empower each other, helping to develop a culture of positivity and inclusivity. Ironically, the social media platforms that have contributed to these unrealistic beauty standards can also provide us with a way out. By creating a safe space to express body positivity and allow creativity, we can create communities of mutual respect and support.

Summer months can feel daunting to some, but this is your gentle reminder that nothing should ever stop you from enjoying life. Embracing the vessel that works around the clock to keep you living is the greatest self-love one could give oneself.

So, without further ado, go and take that spontaneous trip down to one of Hampshire’s many charming beaches!

SUMMER STYLE

Fashion for Every Occasion

The summer season can be a canvas for the modern man to express his true personality. From the pool to the park, from summer barbeques to the horse races – we’ve compiled our Summer Guide so you can stay stylish no matter what. It’s all about finding the right balance between comfort and flair – choosing practical pieces for the heat that also express personal style.

HIT THE PARK: CASUAL COMFORT

Comfort is key for a relaxing day at the park. You might be walking with the family, playing games, or having a picnic, so opt for an outfit that is as relaxing as it is stylish. Go for breathable fabrics like linen or cotton to keep cool. For a laid-back and leisurely afternoon, we recommend rocking a T-shirt paired with chinos. Be sure to finish the look by wearing trainers, as you’ll be wandering around the lawn.

Go Poolside: Splash with Style

When it comes to swimwear and pool attire, think beyond basic swim trunks. This is your opportunity to inject fun into your wardrobe and dive into the deep end. Opt for bold prints and vibrant colours that are eye-catching.

Whether you prefer botanical prints, tie dye, or stripes, this is your time to go all out. Pair your swimwear with a lightweight, open-front linen shirt for a dash of refinement. Complete your look with sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun and stylish sandals for when you park up poolside.

THE HORSE RACES: DAPPER

AND DASHING

The horse races are a time-honoured tradition that requires a touch of sophistication. Whether you have a day at Ascot or Goodwood planned, Beautiful South has you covered. It’s one of the best days out in the summer; it allows you to dress up and have fun.

Go for a lightweight blazer over a pastel-coloured shirt, as it perfectly balances comfort and class. A crisp shirt and polished oxfords will make you look like a winner, even if your race bet doesn’t. A pair of leather brogues and a stand-out silk tie will complete this refined ensemble, ensuring you stand out.

Summer

Barbeques: Sizzling Looks

When the grill is fired up, your style should be, too. Barbeques call for a more rugged yet put-together look. Add personality to your look by injecting colour, patterns, and print.

A graphic t-shirt or short-sleeved shirt is the perfect opportunity to show off your summer style.

For footwear, comfortable yet goodquality sandals are key as you mingle, play garden games, and enjoy the BBQ feast.

YOU PREFER PRINTS, TIE DYE, OR STRIPES, THIS IS YOUR TIME TO GO ALL OUT.

The Oldest Decorating Trick in the Book

Bookshelf Wealth, the idea of using bookshelves as a focal interior statement design, has become every budding interior designer’s obsession.

This concept, hailed as the “first major design trend,” suggests pairing bookshelves with mismatched interior patterns, cosy seating areas, and layered, loosely organised art pieces to create a tastefully eclectic reading space. It’s an aesthetic that evokes the warmth of a Nancy Meyers movie, featuring cosy yet classic furniture and, most notably, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves showcasing the owner’s vast collection.

Incorporating Bookshelf Wealth Into Your Home Decor

At its most basic, this feature requires two things: books and bookshelves. While usability and practicality are essential components, specific elements tie it all together, transforming cluttered, forgotten, or second-hand books into a gorgeously lived-in statement. As the nineteenth-century

writer Sydney Smith once said, “There is no furniture so charming as books, even if you never open them or read a single word.”

Choosing Your Bookshelves

Selecting the right bookshelf is key. Routes range from bespoke joinery that integrates seamlessly into your space to stand-alone shelves that add flexibility (and often half the price). For added character, consider vintage or mid-century designs or even bookshelves that conceal hidden doors reminiscent of classic spy novels. The tone of the wood or a painted colour can change the look and feel, and a shelf full of books adds instant appeal to any room, whether in the living room, bedroom, or study.

Organising Your Collection

Once you’ve decided on the perfect bookshelf, think about how best to organise your books. Are you someone who likes them colour-coded? Or do you prefer them organised by size? Learning how to style a bookcase so it becomes an elegant part of a room rather than a distraction is vital to a successful scheme. Here are some expert tips:

“There is no furniture so charming as books, even if you never open them or read a single word.”

Declutter:

Ensure your bookshelf isn’t overstuffed. A neat and organised shelf creates a more inviting look.

Arrange by Size:

Place the largest, heaviest books at the bottom and smaller ones at the top. This helps maintain balance.

Creative Stacking:

Stack books both horizontally and vertically, leaving space around them for a tidy display.

Incorporate Accessories:

Leave room for accessories like vases, plants, and art pieces to add variety and interest.

Colour Coordination:

Display books by spine colour for a unified look. Painting the back of the bookshelf a darker colour can also highlight your collection.

Height Coordination:

Group books of similar heights together for a clean, cohesive arrangement. These techniques are particularly important when looking for bookshelf ideas for living rooms and bedrooms. A wellordered bookshelf will restore interest, character, and texture to a room.

Making Memories

Your bookshelf should also hold memories. Whether you’re searching for bookshelf ideas to elevate your collection of tomes or looking for book storage ideas that are as beautifully curated as the rest of your room, these rules for styling a bookshelf will help you achieve your aim.

If you are designing a home library, bear in mind that over-styling bookcases can be an issue. Books are usually beloved—not props—so don’t worry too much about having a few books too many that need to be piled sideways.

The Final Chapter

Bookshelf Wealth is more than just a design trend; it’s a way to celebrate the stories that make a house a home. By thoughtfully curating your books and integrating them with other decor elements, you can create a space that is both stylish and uniquely yours.

Embrace the oldest decorating trick in the book and let your bookshelves tell a story of their own.

PETERSFIELD TO PALAZZO

This remarkable exhibition, which opens at Petersfield Museum and Art Gallery, tells the fascinating story of Peggy Guggenheim, the famous art patron and collector and her connection to Petersfield. The exhibition will include artwork by artists Guggenheim collected and supported, on loan from Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, Tate, the Hepworth Wakefield, National Trust, The Penrose Collection and Lee Miller Archives, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery and private lenders.

So how did Peggy Guggenheim, an American and member of the wealthy Guggenheim family and member of the avant-garde literary circles of 1920s Paris, come to call an Elizabethan cottage in the hamlet of Hurst, near Petersfield, home for five years? Having lived among the elegant mansions in New York and bohemian apartments in Paris, Guggenheim was introduced to the West Sussex and Hampshire countryside by her partner, Douglas Garman.

Guggenheim was introduced to the Hampshire countryside by her partner, Douglas Garman.

In the summer of 1934, Guggenheim rented Warblington Castle in Langstone. It was large enough to invite family and friends to stay, and they played tennis and swam in the sea at Hayling Island. At the end of the summer, Guggenheim bought Yew Tree Cottage to enable her daughter, Pegeen Vail, to attend Winton House Preparatory School on Petersfield High Street. In 1936, her son, Sindbad Vail, also went to school nearby when he boarded at Bedales.

In Guggenheim’s autobiography, she described Yew Tree Cottage as a beautiful cottage, and she particularly loved the countryside and the South Downs. While Guggenheim spent time in London and Paris, her life at Yew Tree Cottage was relatively domestic, coming into Petersfield for groceries and the newspaper. Several interesting stories have been found that connect Guggenheim to the daily life of Petersfield which are included in the exhibition.

In 1938, while still living at Yew Tree Cottage, Guggenheim opened a modern art gallery in London called Guggenheim Jeune, which became a centre for the artistic avant-garde. During this time, Guggenheim invited several artists, writers, and poets to Yew Tree Cottage, including the writer

Samuel Beckett and artists Jean Arp, Geer van Velde, and Yves Tanguy.

With the impending outbreak of the Second World War, Guggenheim left Yew Tree Cottage and travelled to France and eventually, she moved back to America in 1941. In New York, Guggenheim continued to support modern art and opened a gallery called Art of This Century. When the war was over, Guggenheim looked to return to Europe and in 1949, she bought the Palazzo Venier dei Leoni on the Grand Canal in Venice. With her artwork on display throughout her home, Guggenheim enjoyed sharing her collection with visitors and touring the canals in her private gondola.

Of this exhibition, Karole P. B. Vail, director of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice and Guggenheim’s eldest granddaughter, says, “It will be wonderful to have an exhibition exploring an unexpected and wonderful little-known chapter in Peggy Guggenheim’s eventful life before she began her life as a committed patron of the arts.”

Raising Awareness & Funds for Prostate Cancer

When our dear friend, Kevan Birkett was 57, he had been experiencing neck and shoulder pain, which he put down to his work as a painter and decorator. This pain bothered him, so he booked an appointment with his doctor. The appointment was on 29th November 2021, and on the 1st of December, the doctor called to inform Kevan he had Prostate Cancer. His Prostate Specific Antigen Test was 325, which meant there were high levels of Prostate-Specific Antigens in Kevan’s blood. After a urology appointment, doctors informed Kevan the cancer was advanced and manageable but not curable.

Further testing showed that the cancer was metastatic to the bone, including the top and midsection of Kevan’s spine, lymph nodes, pelvic region and along his aorta. Kevan had one round of chemotherapy and a treatment of ADT, unfortunately, neither of which were successful. Sadly, Kevan lost his fight against cancer in May 2023.

An English Wine

Nestled in West Ashling, near Chichester, Ashling Park Estate is a captivating haven tucked between the South Downs and the Isle of Wight. The estate has been established since 1822, and is steeped in rich history and British heritage. The crest of Viscount Lord Portal, a distinguished RAF officer and former owner, graces the neck labels of Ashling Park’s bottles, a tribute to his storied legacy.

A VINEYARD STAY LIKE NO OTHER

Picture a dreamscape where rolling vineyards meet the tranquil English countryside, where awardwinning wines harmonize with luxury lodges, gourmet dining, and enchanting escapades. Welcome to Ashling Park Estate, a wine sanctuary just an hour and a half from London by train, offering a Napa Valley essence with an English soul.

Gail Gardner, the Managing Director, orchestrated the estate’s metamorphosis from a historic property into a contemporary vineyard retreat. Inspired by her sojourn in Switzerland’s Valais region, Gail persuaded her father to transform their hay meadow into a vineyard, planting 22,000 vines. Today, Ashling Park spans 50 acres, offering not only exquisite wines but a myriad of diversions that keep guests delightfully engaged within the estate’s bounds.

Upon crossing the impressive gates, guests are embraced by a realm of opulence and tranquillity. The estate features elegant tasting rooms, five sumptuous lodges, a refined restaurant, a boutique, an experience room, and even classes in gin and cocktail crafting. Additionally, Ashling Park houses 50 beehives and a dedicated bee room for beekeeping workshops and courses.

A TASTE OF EXCELLENCE

Ashling Park’s vineyard flourishes on a sheltered site with chalk and flint soils, perfect for vine cultivation. The estate’s wines, including their flagship sparkling Cuvée, Rosé, and Blanc de Blancs, are celebrated in prestigious venues such as Cliveden House and Chewton Glen. The remarkable summer of 2022 enabled the estate to produce an array of still wines, including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Bacchus, Rosé, and even a Sparkling Red.

The estate’s sparkling wines have garnered numerous accolades, including the trophy for Best Sparkling Rosé in the UK at the Wine GB Awards 2021 and 2020, along with awards for Best NV Sparkling and Best Regional Wine.

INDULGENT DELIGHTS

Our visit commenced with an immersive vineyard tour, an enchanting journey that included five tastings. We delved deep into the vineyard, learning about the various grape varieties and sustainable farming practices. Our tastings featured awardwinning sparkling wines and a distinctive Pinot Noir Gin, blending education with pleasure. The tour culminated in the interactive Experience Room, where we explored the intricate art of winemaking.

Guests are embraced by a realm of opulence and tranquillity.

The Gin Making Experience stands out as another gem. Participants become scholars at the Gin School, engaging in a hands-on class that marries history, chemistry, and creativity. After crafting their unique gin recipes, guests depart with two bottles of their own creation, perfect for impressing at home. Similarly, the Cocktail Making Class allows guests to master the art of mixology under the guidance of a skilled mixologist, perfecting the techniques of shaking, muddling, and pouring.

GOURMET DINING

After a day of exploration, dining at the estate’s Vineyard restaurant is a sublime necessity. The talented chefs present exceptional cuisine, focusing

on locally sourced ingredients. The meats, for instance, hail from a farm less than a mile away. The dishes narrate a Sussex story, showcasing the estate’s finest produce, including its wines, honey, and kitchen garden treasures. The chic and sophisticated restaurant interior, coupled with balcony seating overlooking the vineyard, offers a dining ambience reminiscent of Napa Valley. Downstairs, the vineyard terrace caters to those seeking sharing boards and small delights, while the evening service provides a vineyard dinner experience with WSETtrained staff offering expert wine pairing advice. Ideal for large gatherings, special celebrations, or a romantic evening, a vineyard tour and lunch at Ashling Park is a premier Chichester highlight.

LUXURIOUS LODGING

An overnight stay in one of the estate’s lodges is a testament to luxury. Designed by Will Hardie of Channel 4’s ‘Amazing Spaces’, the lodges are sanctuaries of elegance. Each lodge boasts 2m x 2m EPOC handcrafted beds, spacious bathrooms with clawfoot tubs, and cosy living areas complete with log burners and estate views. The south-facing terraces are perfect for morning coffee or evening wine, while the well-appointed kitchenettes ensure all comforts are met. Each lodge is named after a stage in the vineyard’s life cycle—Budburst, Flowering, Veraison, Harvest, and Fall—reflecting the estate’s seasonal splendour.

DISCOVERING A HIDDEN GEM

Whether for a day visit or an extended retreat, Ashling Park offers an unparalleled blend of history, luxury, and the pinnacle of English winemaking. The staff at Ashling Park are exceptional, providing friendly and attentive service. Our wine tasting was both enlightening and enjoyable, and the dining experiences, from evening dinner to breakfast, were nothing short of spectacular.

And as a special treat, if you book a lodge on a Thursday, you get a free vineyard tour and tasting worth £50, on mention of this review!

TOYOTA MAKES STRONG UK ALL-BEV DEBUT bZ4X

This is the Toyota bZ4X BEV (battery electric vehicle). The ‘4X’ bit is the main name of the car – the ‘4’ refers to its size, so it sits alongside the RAV4 in the range as a compact SUV. The ‘bZ’ refers to Toyota’s ‘beyond zero’ strategy, but no one would stop you if you called it Bizzyforks.

The stratagem is a company philosophy aimed not just at zero-emission cars but encompassing all the improvements that modern-day technology offers. This includes enhancing the entire driving experience, keeping you connected over longer journeys and keeping you as safe as possible.

The bZ4X rides on the e-TNGA platform which was jointly developed by Toyota and Subaru. Technically similar to the Lexus RX and the Subaru Solterra, all three cars share the e-TNGA underpinnings.

Priced from £42,900, the trim line-up currently comprises ‘Pure’, ‘Motion’ and ‘Vision’. The range-entry Pure is offered in FWD only, while Motion and Vision both offer AWD.

In terms of body colour, black is included on all trims. However, if you want dark blue, it’s extra,

while white, silver, red and dark grey all cost extra, too. The single-motor front-wheel drive variant has a range of around 320 miles, while the all-wheel drive version claims 292 miles. Of course, the actual range depends on many factors, including ambient temperature, weather conditions and driving style.

Off the line, it feels impressively responsive, accelerating with an instant burst of power, sufficient to get you up to speed without feeling like you’re waiting for your pension to kick in. First impressions are that the car is more of a comfortable cruiser than a performance-focused mean machine. But it still has lots of personality and doesn’t feel lethargic.

The suspension errs in favour of soft, so it’s relaxing and easy to drive for long periods, feeling elegant on the move. In addition, the Toyota smooths out potholes and crusty surfaces reasonably well.

While not yet tested, the four-wheel drive version is said to be a very competent off-roader - largely thanks to Toyota’s partnership with Subaru, which has given the former access to an adapted version of the latter’s X-Mode off-road system.

Off the line, it feels accelerating with an instant burst of power

The Toyota bZ4X has a maximum charging speed of 160kW (150kW on FWD versions). Like its range, it’s not bad. Getting from a 10 to 80 per cent charge will take around 30 minutes, although a 7kW home wall box will take 10 to 11 hours (comfortably overnight) to get from empty to full.

The bZ4X’s interior looks impressive, futuristic, and even somewhat luxurious, representing a clean break from the interior design of Toyota’s ICE models. The Pure model offers an 8-inch infotainment screen, while a larger 12.3-inch is standard on the Motion and Vision trims.

The bZ4X is a solid, spacious and comfortable performer. It feels exceptionally well built, pulls away strongly with good handling and has a generously equipped interior with lots of gadgets and a 5-Star Euro NCAP safety rating, too.

Creating the future YEARS OF

Growing Places Community Childcare Centres have been central to the communities they serve.

The not-for-profit charity started with one nursery in Havant by Jackie Warren (CEO). “My background in childcare began in a nursery in Liverpool. This was in an area of deprivation with vulnerable families. I came to Growing Places, known then as Staunton Park Day Nursery, which was a ‘community’ nursery in the heart of Leigh Park.

“At the time I arrived at Staunton, the families were predominantly affluent, with few from the local community; this was something we changed by offering more flexible sessions that met the needs of all families. We developed a nursery that ALL could attend, no matter their standing in society; as we say, ‘no child should be left behind.’

Recognising that everyone has a valuable contribution to make and should have a voice and

be appreciated for what they bring. My biggest want for the nursery at that time was that it was a ‘family’ and that we were there for one another. Parents working with the nursery and vice versa; we have an invested interest in each other - it is important to expect support from the families and for them to expect the same. My time in Toxteth, Liverpool gave me a strong vision and passion for changing how we view childcare and education in this country.

All children have the right to explore and make mistakes.

Growing Places is built on this today, valuing all and treating everyone with respect. All children have the right to play and have a childhood where they can explore and make mistakes. They should be offered opportunities to develop life skills and shared experiences to build up their bouncebackability.”

The Early Years sector is undervalued and underfunded, with nurseries closing daily from financial pressures and a recruitment crisis.

There are five Good and Outstanding nurseries, Out of School Provision and Holiday Clubs in Havant, Waterlooville and Fareham. Carlie Powell (Head of Nurseries) shares, “we provide opportunities and experiences that encourage children to explore, think for themselves, find solutions and know that it is ok to make mistakes.

In doing so, we build children’s resilience, selfesteem and self-belief, encouraging positive attitudes to future learning. We believe children are born curious, capable and competent learners. Our knowledgeable and highly educated team facilitate these deep learning opportunities with a secure knowledge of child development theory in practice”. These incredible 25 years were celebrated with a glitzy, red-carpet event for the company with plenty of surprises for Jackie: a film of messages from parents, children and colleagues, a choir and surprise guests. For ten years, staff have been visiting pre-schools in Reggio Emilia and Sweden. “We are constantly reflecting, reviewing and amending our practice to meet the needs of our children in an everchanging world.”

From its ample restaurants and bars to its luxurious spa, Viva, Norwegian Cruise Line’s newest ship, is fuel for fantasies – and guarantees the ultimate escape.

A great many of us enjoyed a Barbie moment sometime last year, myself included. While many collectively wore pink on nights out at the blockbuster or posed as Ken or Barbie figurines inside oversized doll packaging (to be forever immortalised on Instagram), mine came unexpectedly. Aboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s newly-launched Viva, inside one of Los Lobos restaurant’s Barbie-pink glossy deckside booths, I found myself, cocktail in hand, enjoying the Mediterranean sun and views of Cannes. It was a fantastical moment in which imagination became reality, much like any time spent aboard Viva.

Travelling aboard the second ship in NCL’s elevated Prima class is a sensory delight, an opportunity to leave one’s daily stresses at home and revel in an environment that’s designed for memory-making. Boarding Viva is a departure from reality into an escapist world that redefines modern cruising – sophisticated design, sustainable cocktails, elegant finishes, compelling entertainment, global cuisine… and all that’s before mention of a triplestorey race track on the ship’s uppermost decks!

Dining and drinking venues aboard Viva number close on twenty, with complimentary and speciality restaurants appealing to all tastes. In Hasuki, the lively clang and festive cheer accompanying preparations of its teppanyaki cuisine are offset by sultry midnight blue interiors that add intimacy. Located several decks above, the pastel palette of the poolside Surfside Café and Grill perfectly complement the light lunch I enjoyed following an afternoon swim. The showstopper interiors of Cagney’s Steakhouse and Onda by Scarpetta, the ship’s Italian restaurant, are as exceptional as their

dishes and the perfect environments for dressed-up nights at sea. As too is Palomar, with its seafood menu and walls of glass revealing dusky ocean views. I loved how the Indulge Food Hall – with its global food trucks and digital menu – offers relaxed seating that spills outdoors. From the swanky to the casual, there’s an eatery for everyone, and being able to dine at the hour of one’s choice only adds to the appeal, whether it be an intimate or familyfriendly meal.

“An opportunity to leave one’s daily stresses at home and revel in an environment designed for memory-making.”

With so many restaurants and activities onboard, disembarking for days spent in any number of ports is a choice rather than a necessity. My Mediterranean cruise departed from Rome’s nearby port, Civitavecchia, and, over several days, sailed west towards its end destination, Lisbon. Familiar with the city itself, in Florence, I opted for the ship’s excursion to the Tuscan city of Lucca.

Within its ancient fortified walls are the particularly striking facades of the basilicas of San Michelle in Foro and San Frediano. Cannes was magical in different ways; a walk to the hilltop Château de la Castre rewarded with views of the city’s famous La Croisette, and time in Marché Forville, with its array of spices, cheeses, and farm-fresh produce, was a culinary treat. And while many aboard

Viva opted for time at Ibiza’s Talamanca Beach, walkable from the town’s new cruise terminal, curious to discover more of the party island, I ventured to the sleepier towns of Santa Eularia and Santa Gertrudis.

After such sightseeing, some dedicated me-time and an afternoon of pampering was called for, so I booked into Mandara Spa. Descending the black marble staircase overlooking the thermal pools, I left the bustle beyond. The heated pools and many saunas (including salt, charcoal and infrared) provided quiet spaces in which to unwind – as too did the aromatherapy steam room. But for real indulgence, I can’t recommend Mandara’s signature Aroma Spa Seaweed Massage enough. It was a tough choice from a comprehensive menu that includes hot stone and bamboo massages, but ultimately, it’s one of only a few that include a full body massage. And how much more effective and enjoyable such a treatment can be when one’s

There was no question thereafter but to bliss out on a heated lounger in the solarium at the ship’s bow, with views – as Viva sailed from Ibiza through the Balearic Islands – of the sunset. Because isn’t this the stuff of which fantasies are made?

Norwegian Viva will be sailing to multiple European destinations this summer and beyond, please go to ncl.com to find out more.
