Astrid Wild: Scandinavian Design for Women Who Love the Outdoors

When it comes to outdoor clothing, the market has historically catered to men, leaving women to compromise on fit, comfort, and style. Enter Astrid Wild, the trailblazing Scandinavian brand founded by Maria Paulsson Rönnbäck and Jemina Pomoell.

With its flattering plunge neckline and sculpting shape, this bold printed swimsuit is both eye-catching and functional. Ideal for swimming, lounging, or layering under a loose linen shirt for that effortlessly cool beach look.

M&S Textured Scoop Swimsuit, £29.95, www.marksandspencer.com

These two friends and nature enthusiasts launched the company in 2019 after experiencing first-hand the lack of high-quality outdoor apparel made specifically for women. Frustrated by ill-fitting, unflattering gear, they set out to design a collection that would empower women to feel confident and comfortable in nature.

“Thoughtfully tailored to fit the female form without sacrificing function”

Astrid Wild is more than just a clothing brand. It’s a movement that champions inclusivity, sustainability, and timeless design. Every piece in their collection is thoughtfully tailored to fit the female

form without sacrificing function. From beautifully cut hiking trousers to fleece-lined shirts and water-resistant outerwear, the brand marries practicality with style in a way that feels refreshing and authentic. Their garments are produced responsibly in small factories across Europe, using durable, low-impact materials like organic cotton and recycled fabrics

What sets Astrid Wild apart isn’t just its flattering cuts or Scandi aesthetic; it’s the brand’s commitment to building a community. Through their online journal and social media, Astrid Wild regularly shares real stories from women adventuring across the globe, celebrating the joys of hiking, camping, and simply being outdoors.

It’s an ethos that resonates deeply in today’s fastpaced world, where more of us are looking to slow down, unplug, and reconnect with nature – the Beautiful South team are big fans.

Summer is the perfect time for outdoor fun, relaxation, and making memories. But while you’re soaking up the sun and staying active, it’s important to support your body with the right nutrients. A few well-chosen supplements can help you stay energized, hydrated, and feeling your best. Here are three essential summer supplements to help you make the most of the season.

1. Magnesium: Relaxation and Muscle Support

Magnesium is a vital mineral that plays a key role in over 300 biochemical functions in the body. During summer, when you’re more likely to be outdoors and active, magnesium is crucial for muscle relaxation and recovery. Whether you’re hiking, cycling, or enjoying a beach day, magnesium helps prevent muscle cramps and reduce post-activity soreness.

Beyond its muscle benefits, magnesium supports healthy sleep, which can be disrupted by heat, late nights and physical exertion. This mineral also aids in stress management, making it an excellent supplement for unwinding after a busy day of outdoor fun. To boost your magnesium intake, opt for a supplement like magnesium citrate or glycinate, both of which are easily absorbed by the body. You can also find magnesium in foods like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds, but supplementation ensures you’re getting enough to reap its full benefits.

Supplements

Boost Your Wellness Routine with These Three Essentials

2. Electrolytes: Stay Hydrated and Energized

With summer’s heat comes increased sweating, and when you sweat, your body loses essential electrolytes like sodium and potassium. These minerals are vital for hydration, nerve function, and muscle contractions. Without them, dehydration and fatigue can quickly set in, especially if you’re spending long hours in the heat.

Probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria, help maintain a balanced gut microbiome

Supplementing with electrolytes helps replenish what’s lost during physical activity and keeps you feeling refreshed and energized. Electrolyte supplements are also perfect for those who struggle to drink enough water or who want to avoid sugary sports drinks. Simply mix an electrolyte powder into your water bottle for a refreshing boost that helps maintain your energy levels throughout the day.

3. Probiotics: Gut Health for a Vibrant Summer Summer often means travelling, eating out, and indulging in different foods – and this can throw

your digestive system off track. A healthy gut is essential for overall well-being, from digestion to immune function and even mood. Probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria, help maintain a balanced gut microbiome, supporting digestion and keeping your immune system strong.

Taking a daily probiotic supplement can reduce bloating, gas, and discomfort, which are common when your routine and diet are less predictable in the summer months. Probiotics also support better nutrient absorption, meaning you get more out of the healthy foods you eat.

While fermented foods like yoghurt, kefir, and kimchi are natural sources of probiotics, a highquality supplement can ensure you’re getting a concentrated dose. Choose a probiotic with multiple strains of bacteria and at least 10 billion CFUs for the best results.

While supplements are no substitute for a balanced diet and lifestyle, they can fill in the gaps and help you stay at your best. With these essentials in your routine, you’ll be ready to enjoy every moment of the season.

Puresport

In 2025, lip tints have officially taken the crown from the millennial-favourite winged liner. With celebs like Billie Eilish and Hailey Bieber swiping on these low-fuss wonders, it’s clear the modern lip routine is all about staying power and hydration. And what pairs more perfectly with a long-lasting stain than a nourishing balm? Together, they’re the ultimate beauty duo—giving you colour that lasts and comfort that never fades.

Lip tints are designed to stain the lips with a sheer veil of colour, creating a naturally enhanced look that resists fading, smudging, and transfer. Whether you’re sipping oat milk lattes or running errands, these pigments hold their own. They come in all kinds of formats—from glossy stains to marker-style pens—but the best ones feel like you’re wearing nothing at all.

The challenge, though, is keeping lips soft while the locked-in colour stays in place. This is where lip balms step in. When layered underneath or over a tint, a good balm boosts hydration, prevents flakiness, and gives your lips that healthy, justkissed finish. The pairing is perfect for anyone tired of high-maintenance lipsticks that demand constant reapplication or flake-off by midday.

Whether you’re sipping oat milk lattes or running errands, these pigments hold their own.

In testing various formulas, I applied each stain to freshly moisturised lips, let it sit for a few minutes, and then blotted it to reveal the true colour payoff. I then used balms throughout the day to evaluate how well the duo performed in realworld conditions. Key factors included hydration, application ease, staying power, and how well the balm complemented the tint without disrupting it.

LILY JACOBS Tufting Artist

Extraordinaire from Portsmouth

In a sun-drenched studio nestled among the historic arches of Old Portsmouth, just a stone’s throw from the sea, a new kind of textile art is taking shape— one loop at a time. Lily Jacobs, the creative force behind Tiger Lily Tufts, is putting tufting on the map with her vibrant, tactile creations that blur the lines between craft, design, and joyful rebellion.

Introduced to the art of Tufting during her BA (Hons) in Textiles at Arts University Bournemouth, Lily describes the moment as love at first tuft. “I haven’t put the tufting gun down since,” she laughs. It’s easy to see why. Tufting—where yarn is pushed through

a fabric base to create plush, textured surfaces—is a medium that invites play, patience, and a deep appreciation for the handmade.

Lily’s aesthetic is instantly recognisable: bold, cheerful, and rich in character. Smiley faces beam from her rugs, animated frogs leap across wall hangings, and nostalgic motifs like flowers and food-inspired icons are a recurring theme. “My inspiration comes from everyday life—walks by the sea, meals with friends, landscapes I’ve seen on my travels,” she says. “Lately, I’ve been obsessed with food-themed pieces. There’s something so fun and comforting about it.”

Tufting is fun, expressive, and a little bit magical. You just want to reach out and touch it!

From her open studio at Hotwalls Studios—a public-facing creative hub in Portsmouth—Lily not only creates but shares her passion with the community. Visitors can browse her ready-made pieces, commission custom artwork, or take part in immersive tufting workshops. “The workshops are one of my favourite parts of the business,” she says. “Introducing people to the tufting gun, seeing their ideas come to life—it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Her recent commission for Heinz, a 4ft tufted ketchup bottle, tested her skills in scale and precision. “It was my most challenging piece to date, especially getting the font right. But I loved it. It reminded me that I can bring even the wildest ideas to life.”

Sustainability is another cornerstone of Lily’s practice. From using second-hand materials and repurposing offcuts into mini artworks to recycling packaging, she ensures her studio operates with minimal waste. “Being kind to the planet is part of being a responsible maker,” she says.

Whether you’re looking for a statement rug, a quirky gift, or the chance to try tufting yourself, Tigerlily Tufts is a haven of colour, creativity, and conscious craft. As Lily puts it, “Tufting is fun, expressive, and a little bit magical. You just want to reach out and touch it.”

JULIET SEAR

Baking Magic and Festival Flair

Renowned baker, author, and television personality Juliet Sear has long been a household name in the world of sweet creations. With six bestselling cookbooks, including her latest hit, Air Fryer Baking Magic, and regular appearances on This Morning, she brings a touch of joy and creativity to kitchens across the UK. We caught up with Juliet ahead of her appearance at the Good Food Festival on Saturday, 16th August, to talk baking, books, and what she’s most looking forward to at the event.

Q: Juliet, you’re set to take the stage at the Good Food Festival this August — what excites you most about this event?

I’m really looking forward to the atmosphere at the show. The Good Food Festival is such a great place for passionate foodies. It’s fab to catch up with friends in the industry, too, and hopefully, the summer vibes at Goodwood will be shining; it is sure to be great fun with loads of tasty food and drink!

Q: With your new book Air Fryer Baking Magic becoming a Sunday Times bestseller, will you be showcasing any air fryer creations at the festival?

I will indeed; so many bakes can be made in the air fryer - sponges and breads come out incredibly well. All my recipes from the book can also be baked in an oven; they are very flexible!

I love doing live TV. It’s always such fun, and you get to meet all sorts of characters. There’s a great energy in a live studio. I also love making books. It’s such a special thing when you get the book back for the first time and see all the pictures you’ve worked on with a creative team.

Q: For those attending the Good Food Festival, what can they expect from your live session on stage? Any sneak peeks of what you’ll be baking?

I’m still deciding! The trouble is I always have so many ideas it’s hard to pick. I might do a collection of lovely summery recipes which are perfect for entertaining, as my favourite thing is hosting gatherings for friends and family in the summertime.

“I always like to style my recipes in a vibrant and creative way.”

Q: You’ve created cakes for some very high-profile names — from Tom Daley to Fearne Cotton. How do you bring that level of creativity to a live demo setting like this festival?

I always like to style my recipes in a vibrant and creative way. For me, the presentation is key! We eat with our eyes first. I love making super fun recipes that are shareable and great for gatherings and parties. I love cooking live with an audience, too. There’s usually lots of interaction, and it’s a great place to connect and answer questions.

I enjoy showing clever techniques for cake decorating and making bakes look pretty; there are lots of tricks you can use to make things look amazing. Hopefully, the demos will inspire people to get more creative.

Q: You’ve worn many hats in your career — baker, author, teacher, TV personality. Which of those roles do you enjoy most, and why?

Q: The luxury food scene is always evolving. What trends in baking and patisserie are you loving right now — and which ones do you think are here to stay?

There’s still a real trend for cool pastries using lamination, cubed treats, and pistachio cream, which seems to be taking over right now! Sourdough is also still huge - there are some fantastic new bakeries popping up.

Q: You’ve always had a talent for making baking accessible to everyone. What’s your best advice for home bakers who want to elevate their creations to something truly stunning?

I always say, make sure not to rush. Take your time, read the recipe over completely and get everything prepared before you begin. Then, just enjoy the process. For elevating a bake in the summer, using edible flowers on sweet and savoury food is a great way to add a wow factor with minimum effort.

Q: Finally, from stocking Fortnum & Mason to becoming a TV regular, your journey is inspiring. What’s one moment in your career so far that you treasure the most?

That is such a hard question to answer, as luckily, I’ve had the opportunity to work on so many fantastic projects. If I had to pick, it would be creating the Bruce Bogtrotter cake for the Matilda the Musical movie as we got to work on an incredible set with amazing artists (plus I’m a massive fan girl of Emma Thompson, so hanging out with her in our cake studio was brilliant!), and the crew. It was amazing. Also baking for His Majesty The King!

Catch Juliet Sear live on stage at the Good Food Festival on 16th August. From expert tips to mouthwatering demos, it’s an event not to be missed. The Good Food Festival at Goodwood Racecourse takes place from 15th - 17th August, tickets can be booked at www.goodfoodshow.com/goodwood-festival

Multi award winning Indian restaurant

Nestled in the heart of Hayling Island, Gandhi Tandoori is a culinary gem that delivers an unforgettable dining experience.

From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted with warm smiles and attentive service that remained consistently excellent throughout the evening. It’s clear this restaurant values not only its food but also its customers just as much.

We began our meal with a kebab platter, a generous and beautifully presented assortment of chicken tikka, lamb tikka, and sheek kebab. The meats were tender and full of smoky tandoori flavour, each piece distinct in its spicing yet perfectly harmonious on the plate. A highlight was the vibrant chilli jam salad, artfully topped with pomegranate seeds — a delightful contrast of heat and sweetness that elevated the dish beyond the usual starter.

The Sag Aloo offered perfectly cooked potatoes in a vibrant spinach sauce, a delicious addition to the main courses.

Accompanied by poppadoms and a chutney tray, our first course set the tone for what was to come. Each chutney — from the tangy mango to the cool mint yoghurt — was fresh and flavorful, adding an extra dimension to every bite.

For mains, the Tandoori Chicken Tikka Biryani was a standout. The marinated spring chicken was tender and richly spiced, cooked over charcoal to impart a delicious smoky depth. Mixed with

aromatic basmati rice and served with a cooling raita, it was hearty and satisfying — the kind of dish you want to savour slowly.

The Gandhi Chef’s Special truly lived up to its name. We opted for chicken and were delighted by the bold and complex blend of hot, sweet, sour, and spicy notes.

Gandhi RestauRant HAYLING ISLAND

This curry is a testament to the chef’s mastery of balance — fiery yet nuanced, with the signature “Hiralian spices” adding a distinct and memorable kick. It’s easy to see why this is a favourite among regulars.

Vegetarian sides were just as impressive. The Khatte Baingan, aubergine in a rich gravy of onions, red chillies, coriander seeds and cashew nuts, was silky and deeply flavorful, and something that we have said we will be ordering every time we visit from now on. The Sag Aloo offered perfectly cooked potatoes in a vibrant spinach sauce, a delicious addition to the main courses. These were accompanied by fluffy mushroom rice and warm, pillowy naan bread — ideal for mopping up every last bit of sauce.

Throughout our meal, the service was impeccable: prompt without being intrusive and always friendly. Every dish arrived beautifully presented and clearly prepared with care and pride.

Whether you’re a spice lover or new to Indian cuisine, Gandhi Tandoori offers something truly special. With its exceptional service, beautifully crafted dishes, and warm atmosphere, it’s not just a meal — it’s an experience. Highly recommended.

The charitable foundation making a difference close to home

Behind every thriving community across our region are stories of resilience, ambition, and hope - and at the heart of many of these stories is the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Community Foundation (HIWCF).

HIWCF is the region’s leading independent charitable foundation, dedicated to creating positive social change within the poorest and most disadvantaged communities. Working quietly but powerfully behind the scenes, HIWCF connects generous donors with the grassroots organisations that make a real difference - often in places and communities that go unseen.

Across Hampshire, HIWCF supports a huge range of causes, from helping young entrepreneurs build businesses to funding projects that tackle social isolation and mental health challenges and helping reduce barriers to opportunity.

Take Hannah, a promising young entrepreneur who, with HIWCF’s support, was able to expand her coffee business. Thanks to a small but vital grant, Hannah could purchase the equipment she needed to turn her dream of growing the business into a reality - gaining not just financial independence but pride and confidence in her future.

Or consider the story of Josh, a young man with autism who, thanks to funding from HIWCF, has developed the skills and confidence to gain employment. With HIWCF’s help, organisations like Positive Path Foundation can continue to help young people with autism gain independence and confidence in their abilities.

HIWCF’s work doesn’t stop at individual lives. It champions systemic change, too - convening conversations and action on critical but often unheard issues like support for care leavers. Recently, HIWCF brought together charities, funders, and policymakers to explore how young people transitioning out of care can be better supported to lead fulfilling, independent lives.

None of this impact would be possible without the generosity of families, individuals and local businesses who believe in giving back to their

local area. HIWCF ensures that every donation is carefully placed where it will create the greatest good. Donors have the opportunity to be as involved as they wish, from setting up a named endowment fund for a cause they care about, to leaving a legacy in their will to simply trusting HIWCF to direct their regular gift to where it’s needed most.

In a world where need can often feel overwhelming, HIWCF offers a meaningful, highly personal way to create change that you can see and feel in your community.

Your support could help fund a mentor for a vulnerable teenager, a social group for isolated older people, a skills workshop for care leaversor even the next young entrepreneur who will one day help shape Hampshire’s future.

INTRODUCING THE

The Polestar 3 is a sizable SUV with cool styling, a modern minimalist interior, and is packed with technology.

It’s an all-electric car, and you should consider it alongside premium alternatives such as the exceptional Audi Q8 e-tron, the handsome Mercedes-EQE, and BMW’s smart iX.

It shares much of its mechanical makeup with fellow Swedish EV, the Volvo EX90. However, while that car is a practical, seven-seat family car with safety and comfort at the forefront, the Polestar 3 intends to be the sporty foil to the Volvo’s sensible nature.

Inside, you get a lovely minimalist design. Though you do get a dedicated driver display for your speed and other essential information, everything else is routed through a large, portrait-oriented touchscreen in the centre console. This runs a slick Google operating system, which is responsive and easy to use. However, it’s annoying that many functions, such as the climate controls and even the glovebox opening and closing, require use of the touchscreen.

Polestar

There are premium-feeling materials abound inside. Everything feels high-quality and well put together, so it should stand up to the rough and tumble of family life really well.

Space is excellent up front in particular. You might get a bit more space for three in the back seats of a Kia EV9, but there’s not much in it, and the Polestar 3 will be roomy enough for most. The seat bases are quite close to the floor, though, so underthigh support isn’t fantastic. Unlike the Volvo EX90, the Polestar 3 is strictly a five-seater.

Beneath the cabin floor sits one of the biggest electric car batteries currently on sale in the UK, and it contributes to a maximum official range of 403 miles. And incredibly fast charging means that with a suitably powerful DC charger, you’ll be able to top up from 10-80% in as little as half an hour, despite the mammoth battery.

There are single- and dual-motor versions, with the latter getting more power but less range. Dualmotor models get air suspension, which makes the Polestar 3 absolutely lovely to drive around town because it soaks up bumps with zero fuss. It’s quiet and refined to drive, even at motorway speeds.

That is perhaps unsurprising for a big, luxurious electric SUV. What is surprising is the fact the Polestar 3 is also incredibly capable on a twisty road. Make no mistake, at over 2.5 tonnes this is a heavy car, but it maintains impeccable road manners along those more, er… ‘entertaining’ B roads.

It’s an easy car to like because it looks and feels like nothing else, in a class of cars that can seem rather samey. It is comparably decent value for money, especially given the standard kit list. More than that, it strikes a very happy blend of comfort, pace, and even a little handling zing.

IT’S QUIET AND EVEN AT

MOTORWAY SPEEDS.

Sweden’s Polestar 3 is available to order now and is priced from around £69,000 to £89,000 depending on desired technical specification and chosen equipment packs.

In Italy, summer is not just a season—it’s a state of mind. Think lingering afternoons, golden sunsets over cobblestone piazzas, and laughter echoing from terrazze and trattorie. And at the heart of it all? The iconic Italian spritz.

Effervescent, bittersweet, and irresistibly refreshing, the spritz is more than just a cocktail—it’s a ritual of aperitivo, a celebration of connection, and the ultimate toast to la dolce vita. While the Aperol Spritz has become a global symbol of Italian elegance, Italy’s spritz tradition is as diverse as its landscapes. Discover the crisp,

St‑Germain Hugo Spritz

Light, floral, aromatic and elegant, born in Northern Italy and beloved across Europe, the Hugo Spritz is a modern classic. A delicate blend of prosecco, soda water, fresh mint, lime, and a dash of St-Germain elderflower liqueur—it’s Alpine charm in every sip. Available from www.waitrosecellar.com

The Italian Art of the Spritz

herbaceous sophistication of a Martini Bianco Spritz, the citrus-kissed brightness of Limoncello, or the delicate, floral charm of St-Germain, inspired by the Alpine blooms of northern Italy. Each sip transports you to a different corner of the country.

What is a Spritz?

The spritz (lo spritz) originated in the early 19th century in the Veneto region when Austrian soldiers—unaccustomed to the strength of local Italian wines—began to “spritz” them with a splash of water. Over time, this simple custom

evolved with the addition of bitter liqueurs and bubbly prosecco, blossoming into the beloved aperitivo we know today. At the heart of every spritz is a simple, timeless formula: 3 parts prosecco, 2 parts Italian liqueur, 1 part soda water. Served over ice in a large wine glass and garnished with a slice of orange or lemon. The result? A light, sparkling cocktail that invites you to slow down, savour the moment, and embrace the Italian art of living well. Whether you’re relaxing on the Amalfi Coast, hosting an apericena in your garden, or simply dreaming of Italy from afar, the spritz is your passport to a summer filled with flavour, joy, and effortless sophistication.

Limoncello Spritz

Zesty, sweet, and bright, this sparkling cocktail blends Prosecco with Italy’s iconic Limoncello lemon liqueur. Refreshing and vibrant, it’s garnished with lemon and mint—perfect for sunny afternoons, poolside lounging, or lively gatherings. A true taste of la dolce vita.

Available from all major supermarkets.

Martini Bianco Spritz

A luminous, refreshing spritz with hints of vanilla, citrus, and aromatic herbs. Martini Bianco’s subtle sweetness and botanical finesse shine with prosecco and soda, garnished with lemon, strawberries, and mint. Effortless sophistication—globally celebrated since 1865. Available from all major supermarkets.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is the region’s local air ambulance service.

Its specialist doctors, dispatchers, pilots and paramedics provide enhanced critical care to the most seriously ill and injured patients – at the beachside, roadside, countryside, or bedside.

Burn-out and

Chronic Fatigue

The Priory has published an alarming statistic on its website: “During 2025, 74% of adults have felt so stressed at some point over the past year that they felt overwhelmed or unable to cope” (1) What are we doing to ourselves?

The final effect of ongoing stress from any cause, be it work, home, psychological, chemical or physical causes, ends with burnout, and it can affect anyone from caregivers to parents juggling work, kids and home life, from those trying to climb the career ladder right up to top-level executives.

Jo uses medical herbs to heal the immune system, and rebuild the stamina of the person.

It’s a widespread societal problem. We have forgotten how to live sustainably within our own lives. People are running on empty, but this is not a new phenomenon.

One hundred years ago, an endocrinologist called Hans Seyle described General Adaptation Syndrome, where, he said, the person under stress is initially able to rise to the challenge. After a short while, they adapt to their stressor and may struggle on for years despite feeling more tired and less able to cope. If the stress continues, their resilience crumbles, and they crash. Burn-out.

At this point, the immune system is compromised so that they are more likely to catch a virus, which is often thought of as the cause of the illness. The over-production of adrenaline and cortisol leaves the person with less stamina and ability to cope mentally. Paradoxically, they are both exhausted but too jittery to sleep. The elevated cortisol inhibits recovery from small injuries, whilst the overstimulated nervous system inhibits the digestive process, leading to bloating, etc. Thus, a wide range of seemingly unrelated issues develop in the previously healthy person.

“When I see people suffering from chronic fatigue, post viral fatigue or burn-out, they often think that it has just happened to them, but after describing their life story, they start to see that this problem had been building for many years”, says Medical Herbalist, Jo Dunbar, who has been treating people with these conditions for over 25 years. Jo uses medical herbs to heal the immune system, kill viruses hiding in the body, restore digestive function, soothe the mind, and rebuild the stamina of the person.

This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all treatment but rather a holistic approach curated for each of Jo’s patients. Over the years, she has developed many tips and recipes, which she shares with her patients, but now, in her latest book, Natures Remedies for Stress & Fatigue, Jo shares these tips and recipes to help people recover from burn-out and fatigue, through the use of home herbal remedies, food and suggested lifestyle changes.

(1) www.priorygroup.com/mental-health/stress-treatment/stress-statistics

Jo says, “It is quite a breakthrough when one realises that this disaster is actually a gift; it teaches us how to slow down a little, to live sustainably and joyfully within our own energy boundaries for the rest of our lives. Now we prioritise taking time out for ourselves, being in nature, and enjoying time with loved ones, with equal importance as dealing with what needs to be done. It is important to bear in mind that if you are not well, you are unable to take care of others.”

WHY RUNNING IS THE COOLEST COMEBACK OF THE Summer

Once viewed as a solo sport for the ultra-disciplined athlete, running is now at the heart of a booming wellness movement connecting millions, fusing physical improvement, mental clarity and social interaction.

Whether you’re chasing a 5K personal best, craving a post-work endorphin rush or training for your next race, there’s never been a better time to lace up and hit the ground running.

THE REAL BENEFITS OF HITTING THE PAVEMENT

At its core, running is one of the most accessible forms of exercise. No required memberships, no specific gear or expensive machinery— simply just you, a decent pair of running trainers, and wherever your desired routes take you. But beyond the basics, running offers a powerhouse of health benefits.

From cardiovascular fitness improvement to stronger bone density, blood sugar regulation and weight management, the upsides are endless. But perhaps what’s most impressive is its efficiency: just 30 minutes of moderate running a few times a week can add years to your life, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and improve sleep quality.

Then there’s the mental rejuvenation. Running stimulates the release of endorphins and serotonin—neurochemicals responsible for that post-run ‘high’ feeling that so many crave. It’s nature’s true stress-resolver, capable of helping you process and clear your mind after a tough day and reducing anxiety symptoms.

Studies consistently show that regular aerobic exercise like running can be as effective as medication in treating mild to moderate depression. But beyond the clinical data, ask any runner why they do it, and you’re likely to hear words like “peace” or “escape.”

Running allows time to unplug, process emotions, and find perspective. And there really is a calming repetition to the act of running that grounds you in the present moment and offers a form of control in our often chaotic, digital world, where the only worry on your mind in that very moment is simply putting one foot in front of the other.

No specific gear or expensive machinery— simply just you, a decent pair of running trainers, and wherever your desired routes take you.

RUN CLUBS: THE RISE OF THE SOCIAL STRIDE

While solo plods still hold their place, 2025 is the year of the run club. Across cities worldwide, grassroots running communities gather in local parks, trails and neighbourhoods—turning this once seemingly lonely sport into a surging social affair.

From early morning jogs to after-dark running events lit by headlamps and glow sticks, these clubs are welcoming spaces for individuals of all abilities. No longer exclusive to the fasterpaced elites, today’s run clubs are inclusive, diverse, and often intertwined with further connection—many ending in coffee, beers, or brunch. And whilst many would’ve once joined a run club for the simple cardio, it’s safe to say nowadays that they are just as sought after for the social connection.

HOW TO START (AND STICK WITH IT)

Thinking of joining the movement but unsure how to begin? Here’s my beginner-friendly blueprint for you to get stuck in and start:

1. START SLOW & STAY CONSISTENT

You don’t have to be an established marathon runner straight away. Try alternating between walking and running—something as simple as running for 2 minutes followed by one minute of walking, repeated for 20–30 minutes, 2–3 times a week. If this is too much, that’s ok! Play around with the interval timings until it’s something you can stick to consistently and build on.

Celebrate each milestone, no matter how big or small.

2. INVEST IN THE RIGHT SHOES

A good pair of running shoes is your only musthave. But whilst getting recommendations online can help, visit a running store for a gait analysis if possible—they’ll recommend shoes based on your running style to give you the correct support you need to succeed.

3. SET MICRO GOALS

Don’t focus on pace or distance at first. Aim to simply show up consistently. Celebrate each milestone, whether it’s going through a session without walking or beating your previous distance, no matter how big or small.

4. JOIN A COMMUNITY

Whether it’s a local run club or an app-based virtual group, community keeps you motivated.

Some platforms like Strava or Runna even offer real-time encouragement and tracking.

5. KEEP IT FUN

Curate a playlist, explore new routes, or sign up for a park run. If it starts to feel like a chore, switch it up – it’s a blessing.

6. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Rest days are part of your training, so please do not neglect them. If you’re sore, stretch. If you’re tired, walk. Progress isn’t linear—just forward.

Running is more than exercise—it’s therapy, social time, exploration, and empowerment rolled into one. As the days get longer, running is the perfect time to enjoy those mornings and evenings filled with the returning sun. Every runner starts somewhere, your somewhere can be today.

The Art of the Luxurious English Picnic Perfectly Packed:

by Antonia Troth

The South East of England is such a beautiful place to be, particularly during the spring and summer months.

Rolling fields filled with lush crops and a multitude of colours in our forests bring joy to those travelling in the area. Making the most of warm days and long evenings in gorgeous settings are a host of events to enjoy, ranging from world-renowned operas such as Glyndebourne, The Grange and West Green House, Goodwood motor racing and horse racing, Cowdray Park polo and numerous agricultural shows.

Of course, no event or show would be complete without the perfect picnic! They can be a simple car picnic, a delightful riverside cosy hamper feast for two in the dappled shadow of a great oak or a grand affair catering for larger parties.

“The food enjoyed during the picnic needs to be special, easy to eat outdoors and mouth-wateringly good.”

The first thought that springs to mind is the diverse range of locally produced food to choose from for a delicious al fresco meal.

The food enjoyed during the picnic needs to be special, easy to eat outdoors and mouthwateringly good. Each component carefully sourced and put together to create a fresh, colourful menu to suit the occasion and the guests. Fortunately, in Petersfield, we are spoilt with a wide range of independent artisanal producers.

The UK’s high standard of traditional and innovative food is now well recognised internationally. Did you know the UK produces over 750 types of cheese, many of which have won international awards? Fine cheeses such as Tunworth, Baron Bigod, Golden Cross, Colston Bassett Stilton, and

“Delicious fresh food is prepared by Madeleine’s team in the kitchen in Steep Marsh, using the finest ingredients”

Cornish Yarg, to name a few. There are also fine English cured meats from Weald’s Smokery, Perfect Pickles, Saint Ellia Oils and Balsamics, Summerdown mint chocolates from Basingstoke, sauces from the Isle of Wight and much more.

This is where Madeleine’s Deli, nestled in the beautiful market town of Petersfield at the foot of the South Downs, comes into its own. Madeleine’s offers a wide range of carefully selected local produce.

Delicious fresh food from the deli counter is prepared by Madeleine’s team in the kitchen in Steep Marsh, using the finest ingredients for recipes developed over the ten years they have been established. Two or three different salads are prepared daily along with a wide selection of quiches, spanakopitas, frittatas, falafels, and Moroccan lamb pie (a favourite

in The Deli) available by the slice or whole to order. The Deli menu also has some fabulous sandwiches for eating in or something on the go. And there’s a Hamper service for those who want to order their picnic beautifully presented and ready to go.

Finding and building relationships with local producers has been core to the community focus of Madeleine’s Deli since it opened in 2015.

On Lavant Street, with regulars popping in to pick up their coffee and breakfast or catering for 20 at a racing gathering, Madeleine’s Deli is a favourite source of locally produced and cooked foods. Many of the producers have been recommended by regular customers or been introduced to the Deli by the artisans themselves.

“Finding and building relationships with local producers has been core to the community focus of Madeleine’s Deli since it opened in 2015.”

Recently, two customers came in raving about one of the stands at the Farmer’s Market on the first Sunday of every month. Caroline Daines from RÅG Nordic Bakery was selling beautiful Nordic Dark Rye Bread and seeded crackers created from her family’s Swedish recipe. Other producers, such as Susanna and Daughters Kefir from the Cowdray herd, is made on Mondays and delivered on Tuesdays. Lucy Saunders has been a long-standing supplier of her Diddling Charcoal, perfect for barbecues!

Providing hampers for sports days and speech days at local schools such as Bedales & Churchers to tables of feasts for 20 to 40 guests at Cowdray Gold Cup, the possibilities are endless.

Madeleine’s Deli will assemble your picnic ready for you to enjoy with your guests. Call, pop in or have a look at the website to order:
