The Comeback of ‘90s Fashion:

A Nostalgic Revival

The ‘90s is a decade full of iconic fashion moments, and it has made a triumphant return to the style scene this year. From scrunchies to Birkenstocks, these trends are now embraced by new generations, proving that fashion truly is cyclical.

The ‘90s revival is more than just a fashion comeback—it’s a celebration of nostalgia, selfexpression, and timeless style. The Beautiful South Magazine team are big fans of this trend,

so we have shared our top tips on working it into your wardrobe. If you’re ready to channel these nostalgic looks, here’s how to rock ‘90s fashion with flair…

“The key is having fun and

Bold Colors and Graphic Patterns:

time to embrace the ‘90s Palette. The ‘90s were all about bold, bright colours and graphic patterns. Think neon hues, checkerboard prints, and tie-dye galore. Say goodbye to your winter wardrobe of dark hues and hello to something bright and new. Don’t be afraid to mix and match—pair a vibrant top with funky bottoms or layer contrasting patterns. The key is having fun and expressing individuality through clothing choices.

Birkenstocks: Spring is here, and it’s time to start putting away your winter boots. Comfort and casual meets style with Birkenstocks - with their cork soles and iconic buckles, they were a staple of the ‘90s hippie wardrobe. Today, they’ve transcended their beachy roots and become a favourite among the fashion-forward. You’ll now find them in various colours and styles, far beyond the neutral, earth tones originally found. An incredibly versatile shoe that you should add to your new season wardrobe.

The Return of Birkenstock: A Comfortable Revolution style insider

In the ever-revolving carousel of fashion trends, the ‘90s have staged a triumphant return in 2024. And leading this nostalgic revival? None other than Birkenstock, the iconic sandal and shoe company from Germany.

Once dismissed as an “ugly” shoe, Birkenstocks have made a remarkable comeback. Their profits are soaring, and retailers can’t keep them on the shelves. But what sparked this resurgence?

The idea that a shoe could be so unapologetically unattractive that it became cool among the grunge, ironic, and hipster crowd? Birkenstock has shown up in the right places, partnered with the right brands, events, festivals and celebrities to

Slip Dresses: Slip dresses, with their slinky bias cut, continue to be popular in 2024. Kate Moss was a strong advocate for this simple yet elegant style in the ‘90s. Consider a lace-trimmed silk slip dress for a timeless look - perfect for the lighter weather.

trended - giving relaxed, casual and adventurous vibes. It’s given Birkenstocks a new lease on life. Younger generations have embraced them, discovering not only their popularity but also their unparalleled comfort. But what makes them so loveable?

It’s their durability and being so well made to last the test of time. It’s their classic design, timelessness and simplicity. They’re now the goto footwear across generations. You can easily slip them on and be ready for whatever your adventure or day might hold.

Hoop Earrings: Swing into style with this key accessory. Hoop earrings were a staple in the ‘90s and are still strong. Whether you prefer small, delicate hoops or oversized statement ones, these accessories add instant flair.

Scrunchies: The ultimate hair accessoryavailable in various sizes, textures and colours. The fabric hair ties have been everywhere in recent runways and the latest designer collections. Not only are they more comfortable and forgiving than regular elastics, but they also add an unfussy touch of style to any casual outfit.

Unlocking Wellness: The Marvels of Lymphatic

DRAINAGE MASSAGE

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, we often forget to give our bodies the TLC they truly deserve.

But what if I told you there’s a gentle yet incredibly effective way to rejuvenate both body and mind? Enter the world of lymphatic drainage massage – a wellness secret gaining traction among those in the know. So, grab a cuppa and settle in as we delve into the soothing benefits of this luxurious treatment.

THE BASICS: WHAT IS LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE MASSAGE?

First things first, let’s unravel the mystery behind this blissful therapy. The lymphatic system, often referred to as the body’s “garbage disposal,” plays a crucial role in detoxification and immune function. Unlike the circulatory system, which relies on the heart to pump blood, the lymphatic system depends on muscle movement and external stimulation to keep things flowing smoothly.

“this massage can work wonders in promoting a more sculpted silhouette.”

Lymphatic drainage massage employs gentle, rhythmic strokes to encourage lymphatic fluid movement, aiding in the removal of toxins and waste buildup. Think of it as a gentle nudge to help your body detox and recharge.

The Benefits:

WHY IT’S WORTH THE HYPE

Now, you might be wondering, what’s in it for me? Well, dear reader, the benefits are aplenty! From reducing bloating and water retention to boosting immunity and promoting relaxation, lymphatic drainage massage is a multitasking marvel.

For those battling with bloating or puffiness, this massage can work wonders in promoting a slimmer, more sculpted silhouette. By targeting stagnant fluid and promoting circulation, it helps to flush out excess water and toxins, leaving you feeling lighter and more refreshed.

And let’s not forget about its immune-boosting prowess. In today’s fast-paced world, supporting our body’s natural defence system is more important than ever. Lymphatic drainage massage can help kickstart your immune response, keeping pesky bugs at bay and leaving you feeling fighting fit.

But perhaps the most alluring benefit of all is the deep sense of relaxation it provides. As skilled hands work their magic, tension melts away, leaving you in a state of pure bliss. It’s the ultimate self-care indulgence for those craving a moment of tranquillity in their busy lives.

THE GENTLEMAN’S

Notebook ELEVATE YOUR GOLF STYLE: WHAT TO

WEAR ON THE GREENS

In the dynamic world of golf fashion, 2024 promises to be a year of bold choices and classic elegance merging seamlessly on the greens. As the traditional golf attire evolves, we find ourselves immersed in a fascinating blend of athleisure-inspired styles, vibrant colours, and a fusion of streetwear within the ever-classic golf wardrobe.

A notable trendsetter in this movement is J Lindeberg, whose ambassador, world number 4 Viktor Hovland, turned heads at the 2023 Masters with his daring choice of colourful, abstract patterns. This departure from the norm symbolises a shift towards a more expressive and individualistic golf fashion experience, a boundary we imagine is only going to be further pushed on the greens this spring.

Challenging the established norms even further is the innovative luxury golf brand Malbon. Currently sported by former world number 1 Jason Day after the expiration of his $100 million Nike Golf deal, Malbon is making waves with its streetwear-inspired designs, vintage aesthetics, and fresh approach

to golf timepieces. The brand’s collaborations with major names like Nike, Adidas, Coca-Cola, and TAG Heuer underline their commitment to pushing boundaries and creating their own new, exciting trends within golf attire.

However, whilst the boundaries of golf fashion are certainly being pushed, traditional outfits continue to hold their ever-present ground on the greens. The juxtaposition of classic and contemporary styles creates a diverse and exciting landscape for golf enthusiasts, allowing players to express their individuality through every swing and stylish stride on the course.

With an array of beautiful courses in our local area such as Old Thorns, Furzeley, Petersfield and Hockley just to name a few, this spring represents the perfect time for you to debut your new golf look. Whether you’re drawn to the timeless classics or the avant-garde, 2024 invites you to make a statement on the course that reflects your unique sense of style.

Printmaking has been used within storytelling for hundreds of years. As an illustrator obsessed with storybooks and fairy tales, it makes perfect sense to use this visual art form in my work.

I’m an illustrator and printmaker based in Portsmouth. I create whimsical, hand-printed illustrations using a relief printmaking method called linocut.

I studied illustration at the University of Portsmouth, where I first tried linocut. The process involves using sharp tools to cut an image into a piece of linoleum. The surface is then inked up, and the image is transferred onto paper using a printing press. It’s a very therapeutic and almost meditative process, and I think it’s my way of being mindful and finding some inner peace.

After sketching an idea several times, the final composition is transferred onto the lino block. I’ll start slowly cutting out the lino using my tools, carving out the negative space and leaving behind the positive to be inked up. I often leave marks to chance and decide in the moment how I’ll create texture within the block. I use traditional oil-based inks and thin Japanese papers, which provide a nice crisp print. By layering colours, I’m able to achieve a warm depth in my illustrations that I just can’t do with a pencil or pen. Using this printmaking process really helps my ideas come to life.

Although the process is simple, completing a final print from the first sketch can take me a long time.

These dark themes spark ideas for illustrations, and I enjoy the challenge of matching this with grace, charm and light.

My work evokes a sense of nostalgia, with a lot of my ideas coming from fairy tales. These stories teach us valuable life lessons and how to find strength in our darkest times. If you go back far enough, the early versions of these tales are rather dark compared to the versions we remember from our childhood - and it’s not always ‘happily ever after’. These dark themes spark ideas within me for illustrations, and I enjoy the challenge of matching this darkness with grace, charm and light.

I believe art should be affordable and accessible to all. Printmaking enables me to create affordable, handmade multiples of the same artwork, but each one is unique and sometimes limited in number.

Since July last year, I’ve been working in a beautiful space at Hotwalls Studios in Old Portsmouth. The studio is part of a Grade I listed historical site open to the public, and it feels like a castle from a fairy tale. Coming out of my home studio has been a big change for me, but a positive one. It’s allowed me to share my process with the public and see how they engage with my work. The space also allows me to teach my craft, hosting small-group workshops for all skill levels.

If you’d like to try linocut printmaking, why not attend one of my beginner-friendly workshops? Dates and details can be found on my website.

You can see how I create my linocut artwork by visiting the studio. I also have a selection of framed and unframed original artworks for sale, plus greeting cards and gifts.

EMBRACING

IN HOME DESIGN

As the spring season approaches, the desire to infuse new life into our living spaces becomes ever more palpable. One timeless and captivating method to achieve this rejuvenation is by incorporating florals into your home décor. While we are all familiar with the classic floral prints characterised by historical shapes and muted pastel hues, there exists a plethora of other floral facets waiting to be explored. From bold, realistic blooms in vibrant colours to modern graphic prints with a selective palette, this spring invites you to let the floral trend bloom according to your personal taste.

From wall coverings to window treatments, upholstery to cushions, and bedding to rugs, there are numerous contemporary and modern ways to introduce floral elements into your living spaces.

Wall Coverings

Floral wallpapers are making a statement this season, offering designs ranging from bold and beautiful, showcasing a myriad of colours, to more subdued and controlled palettes. Consider using a grandiose statement design in a small area,

“Strive for balance by pairing vibrant wallpaper with subdued floral curtains”

such as a cloakroom, to create a dramatic impact without overpowering the entire space. The use of oversized blooms or delicate blossoms in rich hues like deep fuchsias, emerald greens, or sultry blacks can evoke a sense of opulence, while pastel florals induce a calming effect. For a less traditional approach, opt for a stunning graphic wallpaper with a simple yet impactful colour palette. Designers like Schumacher and Marian McEvoy present beautiful options, such as the Thistle Vine wallpaper in red and gold or the Polka Dot Jungle fabric in black and green. Their designs are available in various colourways for seamless integration into your design scheme.

Window Treatments

Curtains and blinds offer an excellent alternative if committing to floral wall coverings seems overwhelming. They still deliver a significant impact, allowing you to incorporate large patterns and vibrant colours in a more manageable way. Curtains with intricate floral embroidery can add texture and depth to your space, bringing a handcrafted elegance and character. For a lighter and brighter feel, consider installing Roman blinds with a floral block print design. There are many fabulous choices available that provide a more subtle floral pattern – such as Fabricut Henna Flowers fabric in Delphinium, for instance. Whether you choose the subtle charm of Creeping Ferns in modern stripes or the boldness of oversized blooms, there is a diverse range of floral options to suit every taste.

“Curtains with intricate floral embroidery can add texture and depth to your space”

Floral Rugs, Art, Cushions, and Throw Pillows

For a smaller-scale introduction to florals, rugs, art, cushions, and throw pillows offer a flexible approach. A floral floor rug grounds your space and introduces a subtle floral motif echoed in other accessories, such as cushions and art.

Experiment with different floral themes without committing to a full room transformation. Cushions, in particular, provide an easy and inexpensive way to switch up floral patterns with the changing seasons – we used these stunning floral cushions from Susie Watson Designs to add a subtle floral theme to intertwine perfectly with the client’s stunning artwork and floral display.

“Opt for a stunning graphic wallpaper with a simple yet impactful colour palette.”

Consider coordinating floral elements in different spaces throughout your home to create a cohesive look. This can include using similar motifs in curtains or window treatments in adjacent rooms, ensuring a seamless flow while striking a balance to avoid overwhelming the space.

Create Harmony by Coordinating Florals in Different Spaces

To achieve a harmonious look throughout your home, coordinate floral elements in various spaces. If you’ve used a bold floral wallpaper in one room, pick up similar motifs in curtains or window treatments in adjacent rooms. This creates a flow, allowing the eye to travel seamlessly from one space to another. Strive for balance by pairing vibrant wallpaper with subdued floral curtains or vice versa, maintaining equilibrium in your design.

In conclusion, florals are a timeless and versatile design choice for your home. Whether you prefer subtle nods to floral motifs or a full-on floral extravaganza, the options are limitless.

Imogen Bailey: Stepping into the Spotlight

Imogen Bailey, a talented local actress, is currently captivating audiences in some of the industry’s most cherished musicals. Originally from Hayling Island, Beautiful South recently sat down with Imogen to delve into her fascinating journey that has landed her centre stage…

Can you share a bit about your journey into the world of theatre? What inspired you to pursue acting as a career?

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to be immersed in the world of theatre since childhood, as my family regularly took me to London’s West End and touring musicals. Initially a competitive gymnast from ages 5 to 14, I also attended ballet classes to help with my floor routines, where I actually fell in love with ballet, which led to my first onstage performance as a dancer in ‘Giselle ‘with the English Youth Ballet in 2008! I loved my experience there so much that I participated in three more of their productions!

After moving to Arabesque School of Performing Arts in 2012 for more intense training, I realised my passion for musical theatre and worked diligently at singing, acting, and dancing to give myself the best chance at succeeding in the industry. My hard work resulted in securing offers from four top London musical theatre colleges and eventually accepting a place at Urdang Academy with a full scholarship. Following three years there, I finished my third year early to kickstart my professional career as Kate in ‘Oklahoma!’ at the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Do you have any specific rituals that help you get into character?

There are no specific rituals, but we typically do a physical warm-up led by the company Dance Captain and a vocal warm-up led by the musical director an hour and a half before the show. If I am covering a role, I make sure to go over lines, choreography, and songs before the show!

Can you walk us through a particularly challenging moment you’ve experienced and how you handled it?

My most challenging moment was when I snapped my ankle ligaments mid-show while dancing the ‘hand jive’ in ‘Grease’ at the Dominion Theatre. Rushed to A&E, I had to end my time with the musical early. Despite the difficulty, with physiotherapy, rest, and lots of ice, I returned to dancing within ten weeks.

“Being part of the original London cast allowed me to create the character from scratch, a truly special experience.”

What has been the most memorable role you’ve portrayed on stage and why?

My most unforgettable role was ‘Stray’ in Disney’s ‘Newsies’ at the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. Being part of the original London cast allowed me to create the character from scratch, a truly special experience. Additionally, my current roles in ‘Shrek the Musical’ as ensemble, ugly duckling, blind mice, and 1st cover Princess Fiona have been a dream come true, particularly due to my obsession with the musical and all the films as a kid – such a fun show to be a part of! I’ve even been lucky enough to go on for the leading role of Fiona, most recently in our visit to the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton, which was particularly special for me.

How do you typically prepare for a new role?

I focus on learning my lines before rehearsals and watch related films or YouTube videos to thoroughly research the show or role as much as I can! Being my best self physically and mentally is essential, too, ensuring I am ready to absorb as much information as possible at rehearsals.

What advice would you give to aspiring theatre actors just starting their careers?

Work hard and believe in yourself! This industry is tough, so focus on personal improvements, listen to feedback, and take advantage of classes, workshops, and auditions, even if it’s just for exposure and practice.

In your opinion, what role does theatre play in society, and why is it still relevant in the digital age?

Theatre is a diverse form of entertainment – there is something for everyone! As a performer, my favourite aspect is inspiring future talents just like those who inspired me. For instance, ‘Shrek the Musical’ delivers a feel-good show paired with a powerful message, reminding us to celebrate uniqueness, a message still crucial in today’s world.

Are there any dream roles or productions you aspire to be a part of in the future?

Currently, I’d love to play Princess Anna in Frozen, Eponine in Les Miserables, Veronica in Heathers, Wednesday in the Addams Family… the list goes on!

Can you share a memorable moment that has stuck with you throughout your career?

During ‘Oklahoma!’, I was performing the dream ballet, and a slowmotion dance coincided with a trap door opening… Long story short, my shoelace got stuck in my heel, resulting in a memorable fall at the front of the stage, with half my body disappearing down the trap door!

Trends for Spring 2024

Whether you have a quaint patio or a spacious porch, exciting trends are emerging in outdoor decor for Spring 2024. From vibrant colours to seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, let’s explore the top trends that will elevate your alfresco living experience this season.

Vibrant Colours and Patterns

Say goodbye to the monotony of neutrals and embrace the vibrancy of bold colours and playful patterns. Injecting your outdoor space with lively hues and eye-catching designs adds a touch of personality and flair. Mix and match florals, stripes, and geometric patterns to create an eclectic yet cohesive look that exudes charm and character.

Seamless Indoor-Outdoor Integration

Blur the boundaries between indoors and outdoors by seamlessly integrating your patio or porch with your interior living spaces. Match flooring materials, coordinate furniture styles, and maintain a cohesive colour palette to create a harmonious flow between the two areas. Embracing this trend not only expands your living space but also enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of your home.

Luxurious Outdoor Kitchens

Transform your outdoor space into a culinary haven with the addition of a luxurious outdoor kitchen. Indulge in the pleasure of cooking and entertaining al fresco with state-of-the-art appliances, custom-built countertops, and stylish dining areas. From built-in fireplaces to bespoke pizza ovens, elevate your outdoor cooking experience with sophisticated amenities that elevate your outdoor entertaining game.

Comfortable Seating Areas

Bid farewell to stiff plastic furniture and opt for comfortable seating options that invite relaxation and leisure. Plush outdoor sofas, lounge chairs, and sectionals crafted from durable performance fabrics offer both comfort and longevity. Create cosy nooks where you can unwind and enjoy the serenity of nature in style.

Natural Materials and Textures

Embrace the beauty of nature by incorporating organic materials and textures into your outdoor decor. From rattan and jute to stone and wood, infuse your space with warmth and authenticity. Enhance the natural charm of your patio or porch with tactile elements that create a welcoming and inviting atmosphere.

Timeless Brick Pavers

Rediscover the timeless allure of brick pavers, which have made a resurgence in outdoor design. Versatile and enduring, brick pavers add a touch of rustic elegance to any outdoor setting. Explore different laying patterns, from classic herringbone to contemporary stacked designs, to create visual interest and sophistication.

Small-Space Solutions

Maximise the potential of compact outdoor areas with clever small-space solutions that prioritise functionality and style. Whether it’s a petite patio or a snug balcony, transform unused spaces into inviting outdoor retreats. From versatile decking options to innovative storage solutions, embrace creativity to make the most of limited square footage.

Versatile Enclosed Porches

Embrace the versatility of enclosed or partiallycovered porches as multi-seasonal retreats that offer protection from the elements. Glass panels, screened enclosures, or retractable awnings provide shelter while maintaining a connection to the outdoors. Create an inviting sanctuary where you can relax and unwind, no matter the weather outside.

As we usher in the beauty of spring, let’s embrace the joys of outdoor living with these inspiring patio and porch trends for 2024. Whether hosting garden parties, enjoying a leisurely brunch, or simply savouring a quiet moment amidst nature, let your outdoor space reflect your lifestyle and personality. So, step outside, soak up the sunshine, and let your alfresco oasis become your own personal sanctuary this season.

FOOD & TIPPLE TALK

Canapés: the one bite delight

Canapes should be exciting, visually appealing, and, most importantly, delicious!

The job of a canapé is to get you excited for what’s to come and set a standard for the main event. You’ve probably been working all day on the perfect dinner party, so why start it off with a bowl of dry-roasted peanuts? Your guests deserve better than that. Canapes are one bite (well, they should be), so you really want them to wow.

You can get really creative; this is an opportunity for people to try something they might not usually go for.

The key to great canapés is all in the preparation. You want to have all the elements ready to go when your guests arrive – no last-minute panic fiddling around in the kitchen whilst trying to fix everyone a drink and a late arrival has just rung the doorbell. Choose your canapes wisely, and with a little bit of prep, you really can be the host with the most.

“Choose your canapes wisely, and with a little bit of prep, you really can be the host with the most.”

Here are some of our go-to canapés to try...

GILDAS

These are great make-ahead bites! They consist of an anchovy, green olive, and pickled green pepper skewered together on a stick. They are briny and ever-so-slightly spicy and really wet the appetite for more. Your friend who ‘doesn’t like fish’ might realise that, in fact, good anchovies aren’t that ‘fishy’ and are, in fact, savoury and delicious.

Pairs well with...

Vino Verde (Majestic, LB7 Vinho Verde DOC £7.99). This crisp, zesty white is the perfect way to cut through the bold, salty flavours of this canapé. It has a very slight fizz and a relatively low alcohol content, so it’s a great one to start the night with.

BLINIS

An absolute classic for a reason. Blinis are so versatile and surprisingly easy to make. The extra effort of making your own really is worth it in this case - Delia has a great recipe. They can be made days in advance and bear no resemblance to the rubbery pre-made ones you can buy in the supermarket.

“Small balls of risotto, bread crumbed and then fried for the ultimate indulgent bite.”

You can top with countless different delicious things. Smoked salmon or trout is always a crowdpleaser. The fluffy texture of the blini, the rich and fatty fish and the acid from the squeeze of lemon work so well.

If you use the blini as a starting point, you can let your imagination go a bit. We like to top them with a mild and creamy blue cheese like Dolcelatte, pickled pear and walnut for some bite.

Pairs well with...

Classic bubbles. Champagne and blinis will always be a winner, but if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, we’d urge you to try a Crémant. This is a French sparkling wine made in the same way as Champagne, just not from that region. It’s utterly delicious and much kinder on the wallet (Waitrose, Prince Alexandre Crémant de Loire £14.49)

Available at www.waitrose.com

“Blinis are so versatile and surprisingly easy to make. The extra effort of making your own really is worth it in this caseDelia has a great recipe.”

ARANCINI

If you really want to push the boat out these fried rice balls are a must. Small balls of risotto, bread crumbed and then fried for the ultimate indulgent bite. We like to stuff ours with Taleggio – a gooey Italian cheese, which turns molten when fried.

These can be a little fiddly but can be made well in advance and fried straight from frozen in a matter of minutes. The frying is well worth it for that tempting, crunchy exterior. These are always the first to go at a party!

Pairs well with...

Chardonnay (Majestic, Louis Jadot ‘Les Roches Blanches’ Mâcon-Villages 2022 £14.99).

A white wine with a bit of body works really well with these nibbles. It complements the richness of the arancini while still having enough acidity to cut through and keep you reaching back for more.

BYD simply means ‘Build Your Dreams’. It’s quite unlikely you’ll have heard of the marque, so here’s a brief overview:

BYD Auto concluded 2023 with record-breaking global sales of 3,024,417 units (yes, over 3m), which reaffirms its place as China’s best-selling car brand and manufacturer. Its parent company was founded in 1995, with BYD Auto established in 2003, focussing solely on EVs. Since spending some time with the Atto 3, two additional BYD models have arrived in the UK – the compact Dolphin hatchback and the quick, Tesla 3-rivalling AWD SEAL saloon.

The Atto 3’s exterior design is ‘contemporary’ for a latter-day SUV. However, it’s the inside that generates the most talking points. There are some interesting design flourishes up front, and the build quality and materials are considerably better than expected.

The two-model range kicks off with ‘Comfort’ for around £37,695, followed by ‘Design’ at around £2,000 more. Technically, they are identical, so your choice comes down to the equipment offered.

BYD ATTO 3 Chinese brand makes strong UK debut

Standard kit on the ‘Comfort’ model includes 11kW AC charging, a rotating 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, a 5.0-inch driver’s display, auto LED headlights with high beam assist, electric front seats, adaptive cruise control, a heat pump for climate control and a vegan leather interior. On the outside, there are 18-inch alloys, aluminium roof rails, LED headlights with high beam assist and a panoramic sunroof.

‘Design’ gives you a larger 15.6-inch rotating touchscreen, a handy electric tailgate, fancier ambient lighting and floor mats. There are just five exterior colours available for both models. My choice would be the ‘Comfort’ trim while wearing my smug face, knowing that the extra £2k required for the ‘Design’ is still in my pocket.

The Atto 3 is softly sprung, which makes for a comfortable, calm ride. It is slightly larger than a KIA Niro or Nissan Qashqai, so there is plenty of room in both front and rear. On the road, grip levels are more than acceptable, and the handling exhibited no intrusive surprises. It may not be something you’ll yearn to drive through the twisties, but it’s perfectly agreeable when you’re being sensible.

“On the road, grip levels are more than acceptable, and the handling exhibited no intrusive surprises.”

Recharge speeds are conventional, and a single motor drives the front wheels. The SUV deploys BYD’s own ‘blade’ battery design, which is integrated into the car’s structure to save weight and space. The 60.5kWh battery in both UK Atto 3s will charge from 30% to 80% in 29 minutes and is good for a claimed range of 260 miles.

The Atto 3’s single electric motor produces 204bhp and 310Nm of torque, which is not an enormous amount by EV standards but enough to propel the 1.7-tonne electric SUV from 0-62mph in 7.3 seconds to a top speed of 99mph.

Overall, the space inside is good, while the build and material quality impress greatly, and standard kit levels are generous. Assuming the 260-mile range works for your lifestyle, you’d do well to put the BYD Atto 3 on your test drive shortlist.

NO1 ANTI AGEING DESTINATION HAMPSHIRE

Goodwood’s New Dog-Friendly Cottages

Beautiful South’s Lily Lloyd visits Goodwood’s new dog-friendly cottages for a relaxing retreat in the heart of West Sussex…

This past weekend marked the kickoff of our 2024 staycation plans, and let me tell you, the anticipation was well worth the wait. With longer, brighter days welcoming the arrival of Spring, there couldn’t have been a more idyllic setting for our getaway than Goodwood’s newest dogfriendly cottages.

On Friday evening, our party of three (my partner and I, accompanied by our heart-throb miniature wire-haired dachshund, Bruce) arrived in the heart of West Sussex. The charm began at check-in as we were led to Peach Tree Cottage, a haven just a stone’s throw from The Goodwood Hotel within the sprawling Goodwood Estate.

The cottage, boasting two thoughtfully designed bedrooms with individual bathrooms, an openplan kitchen, diner, and sitting room, a utility room, and a convenient downstairs toilet, felt like an instant home away from home. Bruce wasted no time exploring both the communal front and private back garden, claiming his spot in the dog bunk beds and sniffing out the welcoming bowl of dog treats.

“Every detail of Peach Tree Cottage radiated a special touch, leaving us wishing we had booked a lengthier stay.”

Every detail of Peach Tree Cottage radiated a special touch, from the furnishings to the finishing touches, leaving us wishing we had booked a lengthier stay. The sleeping arrangements included a King Bed in the Master Bedroom and Twin Beds in the second bedroom, both adjacent to beautifully appointed Ren bathrooms stocked with premium products.

After a pre-dinner soak (my overnight stay ritual) and quick outfit change, we made the short stroll to The Farmer, Butcher, Chef, Goodwood’s flagship sustainable restaurant boasting 2AA Rosettes. Just as we remembered from previous visits, the restaurant’s warm and intimate ambience, coupled with a vast collection of Goodwood memorabilia spanning centuries, set the stage for a delightful culinary adventure.

“Bruce wasted no time exploring the front and back garden, claiming his spot in the dog bunk beds”

Our evening commenced with a Sage Bramble cocktail, a delightful concoction adorned with sage and blackberries. The curated collection of beers, spirits, and wines sourced from local vineyards added a distinct touch to the drinks menu, whilst the mocktail assortment was equally impressive, offering a refreshing alternative for non-drinkers. Starters dazzled with dishes like Garlic Soup paired with a slow-cooked hen’s egg and Sussex Red Beef Shin featuring black garlic, pickled pear, potato, and horseradish cream. Main courses, such as Hake with celeriac fondant and South Down’s Rolled Lamb Shoulder with barbeque-glazed belly, offered a symphony of flavours.

As always, sides were no afterthought, with Beef Dripping Triple-Cooked Chips and Tenderstem Broccoli stealing the spotlight. The dessert was a sweet finale, featuring options like Honey Parfait with Estate kefir, seeds, and pollen, as well as Chocolate and Coffee Sponge with roasted mandarin.

We admired the sunrise through the cottage’s dutch door as we sipped on our Nespresso the following morning. After yet another bathe, we headed over to make our breakfast reservation. Enticed by its organic produce from Goodwood’s Home Farm, we returned to the Farmer, Butcher, Chef and were once again completely and utterly satisfied with the selection on offer. Post-breakfast, we made the most of full access to The Health Club. While my partner headed to the pool, I took the liberty of booking a Grown Alchemist Regenerating Facial in the Health and Wellbeing Treatment Rooms. It’s not often you get to start your day with a facial designed to decelerate the signs of ageing with a total skin system reboot, but when you do, you certainly make every moment count.

Before bidding farewell, we embarked on a scenic walk through the Estate’s 11,000 acres. Using the handy map, we explored the Estate’s glorious parkland and woodland, encountering cows, horses and walkers along the way.

Our stay at The Peach Tree allowed us to enjoy the privacy and comfort of home with all the luxurious amenities of The Goodwood Hotel. When you get the chance to book, look forward to settling down with the fire on, curling up with a book or puzzle, and discovering the diversity and delights that make Goodwood so unique.

First seal pup in Hampshire waters is

born on the Beaulieu River

Agrey seal pup recently born on the Beaulieu River is believed to be the first of its kind in Hampshire waters. Conservationists have been keeping a watchful eye to give it every chance of survival.

The Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour team has been safeguarding the pup from disturbance by river users while working with Natural England, the Seal Alliance, British Divers Marine Life Rescue and Wild New Forest Guided Tours to help protect it.

Harbour Master Wendy Stowe said: “This is very exciting news, as grey seals don’t usually breed in these waters, and we believe it is the first pup to survive here.

“We would like to thank our river users for acting responsibly and helping us keep the seal pup safe and undisturbed during its all-important first month. We look forward to watching it grow and join the grey seal colony on the Beaulieu River.” Seal pups grow quickly on a diet of high-fat and protein milk from their mothers, and this new pup has now survived its first month. Pups triple their body weight from 10 to 40kg in their first three weeks as their white fur is replaced by a shorter patterned coat.

“This is very exciting news, as grey seals don’t usually breed in these waters.”

Grey seals are a native wildlife species which has naturally colonised on the Beaulieu River but only recently started to breed locally. Over a third of the world’s grey seals live in UK waters, with as many as 88% of those in Scotland.

They are not the only wildlife to make their home on the Beaulieu River, which is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) as well as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Its unique habitats provide a lifeline as a feeding ground for more than 200 species of birdlife. It has remained a special place by the custodianship of the Montagu family for over four centuries, and the Beaulieu Estate takes a proactive role in promoting best practice standards.

That commitment is reflected in recent awards, with Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour being highly commended for its sustainability practices in The Yacht Harbour Association’s first Sustainable Marina Awards and receiving their International

Clean Marina accreditation for helping to protect the UK’s oceans and waterways. It is also part of The Green Blue, a joint environmental programme by British Marine and the Royal Yachting Association, which promotes sustainable boating for healthier waters.

Wendy Stowe added: “We feel fortunate to share such a wonderful area of the New Forest and have a duty of care to protect the environment and its inhabitants.
