RETAINING BEAUTY THERAPISTS HOW WILL YOU KEEP YOUR TALENTED COMMITTED EMPLOYEES? HOW WILL YOU GET THEM TO STAY WHILE OTHERS MAY TRY TO ENTICE THEM AWAY? You’ve hired the best beauty therapists, they are the heart and soul of your business, your salon’s competitive advantage. You love them because they are critical to your salon’s success. They make your salon the best one for your clients, and offer the best salon customer service they can. They’re the ones you simply cannot afford to lose… and the ones your competitors are trying to steal from you! I QUIT I’M GIVING YOU MY NOTICE I’VE FOUND ANOTHER JOB CAN WE TALK? If any of the above strike fear in your heart or make your stomach sink, you are not alone. Anyone managing or supervising others reacts with dismay to statements like these, especially when the people saying them are critical to your salon/spa. These beauty therapists are the people who are necessary for the success of your business and your peace of mind.

Autumn Issue No.18

HOLD ON TO YOUR STAR PLAYERS Firstly, always remember that thoughtful planning, honest and continuous communication, and basic human respect go a long way with your employees. Have you ever asked your beauty therapists what keeps them in your salon? Have you ever asked what might lure them away? If not, why not? Just asking the question is a retention strategy. Many salon managers say that their time is totally consumed by the business at hand. There is always an urgency to take care of clients, leaving very little time to listen, let alone ask. If you have fallen into this category, you are missing a secret of how to succeed: just ask! Ask each beauty therapist what keeps her working in your salon. Make a note for each person’s answer. Every month, review the notes and ask yourself what you’ve done for that employee that relates to her needs.

Here are the most common reasons people stay: (listed in order of popularity) Career growth, learning and development Exciting work and challenge Meaningful work Great people Being part of a team Great boss Recognition for work well done Fun at the job Having a sense of control over my work Flexibility Fair pay and benefits Inspiring manager Pride in the organisation Great work environment Location Job security Friendly Technology A good boss who cares about employees will help talented people find these aspects in their work. Outstanding therapists give you and you a salon competitive advantage. Talented beauty therapists are scarce and will continue to be scarce. If you have them working on your team, create a workplace environment that is so productive and fulfilling talented therapists will want to stay.

By collaborating with renowned universities and leading researchers, Ultraceuticals are leaders in the global cosmeceutical industry, crafting a simple regimen of products which deliver fast-acting (within 90 days) and discernible results to reveal clear, firm, glowing, beautiful skin. The range of professional-grade products and in-clinic treatments, help address major skin concern such as the signs of premature skin ageing, and pigmentation due to photodamage as well as skin breakouts. “Our mission is to empower everyone we touch around the world with real skincare and life changing results. We are proud of our products and we know that our formulations are high performing. We focus on formulation when we communicate to our audience because that’s what makes us unique. It’s that simple.” says Dr Herber. All Ultraceuticals treatments incorporate the powerful UltraSonophoresis (Infusion) technology. UltraSonophoresis utilises low frequency ultrasound that has been shown to increase transdermal penetration of various ingredients up to 1,000 times than that achieved with other application methods. Signature facial treatments integrate a vitamin infusion to boost penetration of potent actives deeper into the skin. The Skin Workout & Paramedical treatments include an UltraSonophoresis deep cleanse for the perfect pre-treatment skin preparation. Ultraceuticals will also be bringing a hydra dermabrasion treatment that can be used in conjunction with the range. The Ultraceuticals products are also not tested on animals and are accredited by “Choose Cruelty Free”, Australia and “PETA”. Ultraceuticals strives to use ingredients that are obtained from non- genetically modified and environmentally sustainable resources where possible. The products are free of propylene glycol, parabens, synthetic dyes and fragrances.

ULTRACEUTICALS NOW LAUNCHED IN IRELAND

Dr Jennifer Owens is a cosmetic dentist, with a masters in Aesthetic Medicine, with a background in wellness and yoga. She founded The Glow Clinic, in Merrion Square to focus on helping people uncover their inner and outer glow. Her team includes a dietician and brow micropigmentation specialist, and together they work to bring out your best self, inside and out. Jennifer is passionate about skin health, and combines in clinic treatments such as injectables, peels and microneedling with medical grade home care to achieve natural, sustainable results for her patients. Not being “comfortable in your skin” is an old saying, and is something I see the fall out from on a daily basis. It can colour someone’s mood, behaviour and even their ability to perform their job. I have seen acne patients’ personalities transform before my very eyes, when their skin clears up, and I always feel, jeez, life is hard enough sometimes, without an added, visible thing to worry about on a daily basis, isn’t it?! From the sagging effect of rapid weight loss or stress, to areas of hyperpigmentation that look very like dark under eye bags, and angry spots interspersed with wrinkles, many of us can feel pure despair when we look in the mirror sometimes. Our skin is a barrier, and helps to protect us, but sometimes it can feel like it defines us too, especially in this age of immaculate celebrities that “bounce back” from pregnancy, and the ever more frequent “selfie”. Unfortunately, as an organ, the skin tends to fall further down the list, in terms of importance for survival, than our kidneys, liver or heart; and so can be one of the first places that stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep or hormonal transitions show themselves. Happy on the inside tends to really result in happy on the outside, and appearing tired all the time does not help your energy levels. We are not quite as straightforward as an anatomy textbook, with clear, separate compartments. Stress can increase your risk of heart disease and cancer, lack of sleep can reduce your cognitive function below that of someone under the influence of alcohol, and having gum disease can put you at a higher risk of diabetes and potentially even dementia. We are not exactly simple creatures... so where do you even begin when attempting to improve your skin?

Autumn Issue No.18

It is essential to look at your lifestyle as a whole. A few well-placed botox injections do not transform your skin quality from head to toe (although, in cases of squinting at a computer all day long, it can be hard to beat them!), so examining the entire picture and identifying ways skin health is being damaged on a regular basis is a much better place to start. The usual suspects include the following: Lack of routine, or using products that are damaging to the skin. Excessively hot water, very foamy washes and micellar water with a low pH (that’s 99% of them) all irriate the skin and contribute to breakdown of the skin’s pH barrier. First stop during a skin transformation is to make sure your routine is working for you. Excessive blue light - We all know that staring at a screen late into the night can affect our sleep, and makes getting up early difficult. When we are lacking in sleep, our bodies release more cortisol, which contributes to 1)breakdown of collagen, and 2)predisposes us to weight gain around the middle. Not good my friend, not good for feeling or looking anything like you might want to. However the light

from your laptop or phone does more than contribute to poor sleep (which, just in case you weren’t sure... is not the key to healthy, glowing skin), did you know that it can also damage your skin, similar to the sun? Yes. This means sunscreen, everyday. Broad spectrum factor 30 or higher, and quite likely the one in your makeup is insufficient. Finding a sunscreen that you like is the way to go - there are hydrating ones, oil-free ones (Clear Shield, Alumier MD) and others that can give a lovely sheen to your skin akin to a highlighter (Hydrafactor, Obagi Medical). This, combined with blue-light blocking glasses (Ambr Eyewear, True Dark Glasses), will minimise the damage to your eyes, your skin, and your sleep pattern. Three birds, one stone. Sugar - yes, it has been well and truly vilified in the past few years and blamed for everything from obesity to cancer. It tastes great, and can be a lifesaver to help you power through when you are running on empty, but your skin suffers badly over time. A high sugar diet is basically like taking a machine gun to your collagen. And we want all of the collagen if we are to have small pores, plump, healthy skin and minimise the effect of ageing. If you are a sugar fiend, going cold turkey can be hard. And those sweeteners are not a better option. Instead, try and focus on quality. Rather than snacking constantly on biscuits you don’t even like that are lying around the office, treat yourself to your favourite bar of chocolate that afternoon. Mindless sugar consumption happens so easily, and telling yourself “later and better”, can be more sustainable than just “no”. Willpower gets fatigued, just like we do, and having a pack of nuts, a healthy (mainly vegetables) smoothie to hand on a busy day makes the choice somewhat easier. Ps. beating yourself up does absolutely zilch, just enjoy your treat and reset again. Your skin is like any other organ, and it responds well to proper treatment and care, so put the effort in and you might be surprised at the results. When people’s skin brightens up, so do they, and vice versa. We all deserve to feel comfortable in ourselves, and shine in our work, home life and relationships. We only get one life, so who are we not to glow our way through it?

About Look Good Feel Better Independent national cancer support charity Look Good Feel Better provides a unique service to women, men and young adults undergoing treatment for any type of cancer in locations across the UK. The charity was created to help combat the impact on appearance that can be experienced during cancer treatment and has been in operation in the UK for 25 years. The support is provided through workshops, online video tutorials and advice booklets to meet the varying needs of those with cancer. The workshops are led by experienced beauty therapists or make-up artists and local barbers or groomers for men’s groups. The sessions provide advice on issues relating to skincare, shaving and make-up which often include colour correction and help with loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. (common concerns when going through treatment - for both men and women) The advice given is practical and demonstrated using products donated by the charity’s corporate partners and teaches the tricks of the trade used to counteract these concerns. The groups also provide a safe environment for shared experiences as those undergoing treatment can sometimes find it easier to talk to others in a similar situation rather than those closest to them. The groups are always great fun! It’s more than make-up… Whilst the charity helps people to look good, the real benefit is in how looking good makes those that attend feel. The feeling better and improved emotional wellbeing has been shown to have a transformational effect on levels of confidence and self-esteem and this improvement can in turn effect cancer outcome. “Look Good Feel Better is not just about make-up, it’s not about vanity -it’s about control and giving you the strength to fight this horrible disease.” LGFB Beneficiary The charity currently provide support to over 20,000 people every year, however with almost one in two people now likely to be diagnosed with cancer the need for the service is greater than ever. “With two young children, I don’t really have much time for myself, but the Look Good Feel Better workshop showed me some simple make-up tricks that are so easy and yet make such a difference. Going through cancer treatment really saps your confidence and you feel so low, but now I know that I really do look a whole lot better. It gave me the confidence to complete my training and get a job as a Teacher.” Hannah, LGFB Beneficiary

Autumn Issue No.18

“I was reluctant to attend as I thought it wouldn’t be relevant to me, but my wife booked me on! I was surprised that I learnt so much at the session. The advice was relevant, practical and very professionally delivered. My skin had suffered a lot since the chemo and so had my confidence. The psychological impact of cancer is largely unaddressed but trying to stay strong for everyone was emotionally draining. After the session I felt like the man I used to be, all men should go!” Phil LGFB Beneficiary

BEAUTIFULJOBS Get involved Look Good Feel Better is always in need of volunteers who have skills or experience in the industry to help support the sessions. It is a truly rewarding experience to see the transformation of the beneficiaries at the workshops; in looks, laughter and reinstated confidence. If you feel you could help in any way, however small, please get in touch - we would be delighted to hear from you. info@lgfb.co.uk 01372 747500 www.lookgoodfeelbetter.co.uk

T

his month our famous face is a well-known presenter throughout the UK and Ireland, fashion icon and has his own male grooming and skincare line. We learn how good timing, paired with a gap in the market and a love for Irish nature was the key inspiration for laying the building blocks of the success story that is Kennedy & Co. Our beauty columnist Linda Pototzki catches up with Darren Kennedy to talk all things skin, career and what is next for the 38-year old. Darren announces he is off to Calcutta for the second time with Specsavers, he has a new television show under wraps and we can reveal that he is expanding his skincare empire into another category. While the entrepreneur is remaining tight-lipped on the details, he says the cat will be out of the bag in the next month or two. LET’S START WITH THE SKIN “I keep it really simple, to be honest with you. I normally cleanse in the shower with Boscia (approx. €10-€30, Boscia. com). Kennedy & Co., Purifying Peat Face Scrub (€12.95, Cloud 10) to give a good polished finish.” Depending on the day and what the skins needs, the RTÉ star loves to apply the luxurious La Mer, The Concentrate (from €165, Brown Thomas). To keep the peepers telly-ready, the faithful Kennedy & Co, Revitalising Eye Gel (€14.95, Cloud 10) does the trick. Finally, he completes the facial regimen with protection in the form of Kennedy & Co., Daily Moisturiser with SPF 20 (€12.95, Cloud 10).

Autumn Issue No.18

THE BIRTH OF A SKIN GURU If you were to think that Mr Kennedy was a skincare addict from an early age, you would be sorely mistaken. Darren admitted he was a late bloomer to the world of the AHA, BHA, Glycolic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid and the other skin buzzwords.

“I was a bit of late developer in skincare, to be honest with you. I would have only really gotten into skincare in my mid-20s, even at that I would have been very blasé and never really had a routine or did something consistently. I think a lot of guys are like that but the earlier you get onto it, the better.” It was only recently where his love for the biggest organ came to pass. Through being an ambassador for Kiehls, La Mer and other big, multinational skincare powerhouses his passion and interest grew. While there was a target audience for masculine grooming and skincare globally, Kennedy spotted a gap in the market for a homegrown Irish line. Honing in on what Ireland is perceived as across the pond, Kennedy says “Ireland’s provenance was really important.” It is associated with imagery such as “openness in space, fresh air and clean water and pureness, he says. These are all qualities that Darren value and wanted to pull through those qualities in the shape of what we now know as Kennedy & Co. KENNEDY & CO: MALE AND/OR FEMALE Kennedy & Co is an affordable skincare brand made originally to target the male demographic. A clear indicator that the fivepiece line is worth its salt when despite the male target audience, women too are flocking in to get their hands on the range The line is paraben-free, vegan and animal-cruelty free and is currently stocking in most good pharmacies nationwide as well as Cloud 10. Launched late last year after two and a half years of development, the range includes a scrub, moisturiser, eye gel, beard oil and hair clay. As Kennedy & Co reaches its first birthday at the end of the month, are there plans to expand the brood? “We will be launching new products and will be entering a new category. It will happen around October/November time,” Darren admits.

ADVICE FOR THOSE WHO WOULD LIKE TO BREAK INTO SHOWBIZ? The Strictly Come Dancing star said he was by no means an overnight success story. He says it took a lot of graft and offers advice who are interested in following in his footsteps in the entertainment industry. His key advice is to expect no quick fixes and you will have to work your way up the ladder. Darren started his career in television at the tender of age of 17, as a Runner at Ireland AM. He did a lot of radio and television and worked his way up, which stands to him today as he has an understanding of everyone’s role on set. Every stage there was a different highlight. The documentary Gay Daddy was a highlight. Sometimes, as a young man on TV get you can get dismissed and this was a huge cornerstone for Darren. Working with the late Gerry Ryan, Kennedy notes as a key point in his career. “Gerry Ryan was amazing to me, he was a huge feat and great mentor for me,” he says. After wanting to be a vet (at age 13 he decided he might be too squeamish) Darren studied for four years in International Business Languages and spent his third year at the University of Bordeaux. He then secured a graduate programme with IBEC and got a job working with Tourism Ireland and worked in Paris for a year. Darren returned home for a job to work with tech giant Google. Darren notes: “I was the 40th employee at the time in Google Europe in Dublin for 20 months. It was great I travelled the world but it wasn’t my passion and left to pursue a career in media.”

HALLOWEEN As we enter the spooky festive season, we are intrigued to learn if Darren has any tricks up his sleeve to mark the festive event. “I do love to get dressed up and I was hoping to spend Halloween in West Hollywood, in LA. I did that last year and it was amazing. It is like a festival, basically like St Patrick’s Day but people are dressed up for Halloween and they would normally have a massive act performing like Katy Perry or someone like that, it is so much fun.” However, due to work commitments, he will be celebrating closer to home this year. With a stellar career in beauty and entertainment, Darren is by no means going to slow down and says it is full steam ahead. As well as being a brand ambassador for Specsavers, running and expanding a successful skincare line in the next month or two, Darren revealed he just completed filming a brand new series which will be launching in the UK in 2020. We say, watch this space.

Confessions of aHairst REPORTING FROM DUBLIN

Autumn Issue No.18

My first years wages at that time amounted to £28.50 for the first year, then exceeding to £38.50,that 50 pence was truly well spent on buses, booze and powder bleach, my white skinhead was some upkeep. I soon became an artist in my own right, my boss said I had a natural flair. Iwent on to win student of the year amongst 100 students in Mr .Contstatine’s Hairdressing Acadamy. In my second year of training , I entered the North West Blackpool hair show in Blackpool, held annually my category was streetwise (right up my ally) I won it, 1st place position and 100 pounds. Fast forward aged 28, I moved to Lucan in 1998 in late September, a well known salon was opening up, I had my interview and got the position, builders were delaying and I was beginning to get frustrated with the weather, sitting around the house with no wages, so I phoned the tax office ,opened an account for self employed, distributed flyers , and built up a mobile round, the hubby was working away in Belfast and we saved a good few bob, so I started to look for a unit in Lucan village, I came across a top fellow , who had a bike shop called Jimmy and he showed me this upstairs derelict building, I took it on, 4 months grace was given and I opened The Fresh Hair Company, it was a superb buisiness, I worked 72 hours per week and sold it in the boom in 2004. I followed my passion into the teaching /education route, I was offered a position in the Dochus Women’s prison, the scissor sisters were inmates as with Cathrine Nevin, and a Russian girl who carried a chopped head in a suitcase, so I declined that job and took the V.E.Cs, teaching the travelling community, personal care and presentation, hair and aspects of beauty.

The 2009 reshuffle into where the goverment money was being spent , meant the closure of most V.E.Cs. I have been teaching night classes for E.T.B and I also built a state of the art salon in my home. Upskilling is key, my particular chosen field is cutting, and colour correction. My aspirations are to have a T.V programme SALON TAKEOVER sourcing the dying salons, retraining, relaunching and bringing the passion back for the disheartened salon owner.

I am the passion in my buisiness. every rose has a thorn but the beauty is still there, that's businiess.

I knew I was destined to be a hairstylist when I cut my cousins fringe, with a pair of plastic scissors, right before her school photographs, lets just say, it was evident that at aged five, I invented the Viza fringe. In the Eightys Maggie Thatcher brought in an apprenticeship incentive, to train school leavers with a skill, gaining a city and guilds qualification, attending a day release college.

Putting Art At The Heart Of The Home Hailing from the coastal town of Kilkeel in Co. Down, Jacqueline spent her childhood climbing the Mourne Mountains and paddling in the sea. These memories have no doubt heavily influenced her desire to paint.

So often she meets clients who love art but need advice and guidance on how it will fit their decor and colour schemes. Jacqueline will happily tailor a painting to suit a particular style or interior so that the two work in perfect harmony together.

From the moment she was able to hold a pencil, she was drawing everything she saw around her which lead her to qualify with a B.Ed (Hons) in Art & Design 2000.

Jacqueline’s work can be viewed on her website, www.jacquelinerooney.com, in The Yard Gallery, Holywood, Made In Mourne in Kilkeel, Painted Earth in Newcastle, Carlingford Design House, Carlingford and The Donard Hotel, Newcastle .

After the birth of her two sons in recent years, Jacqueline realised that anything was possible if you put your heart and soul into it. She took the leap of faith from the security of her busy career as Head of Art in a large secondary school to pursue her ultimate dream to paint full time. Jacqueline’s artwork has been described as vibrant, emotive and atmospheric and she draws inspiration from the stunning landscapes and coast of Ireland. She is passionate about light and colour and this is portrayed in each and every painting. Jacqueline’s Art has gained widespread recognition and evoked so many emotions in so many through her use of uplifting colours and imagery. Jacqueline’s love for Art & Interiors has been evident in so much of her work. She studied interior design alongside art and loves to twin her knowledge of both to advise clients on the best piece of her art to complement and enhance their home.

Private viewings can be arranged by appointment in her studio in Rostrevor, Co. Down.

meet instagram star, personal trainer & founder of oh fitnessan

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INITIAL INTEREST WITH FITNESS? My family were always into sport. My parents played tennis and loved running. I started playing gaelic football and camogie when I was a teenager. I started going to the gym as soon as I was old enough to. It always felt like a natural progression.

Autumn Issue No.18

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS? HOW DID YOU GO FROM A SIMPLE FITNESS FANATIC TO A WIDELY SUCCESSFUL PERSONAL TRAINER AND ONLINE COACH? I currently have two different plans available. The Oh Fitness Furnace is for those that want a weight training program for the gym. They will also learn about calories and macros but also the mindset of training and nutrition. The Oh Fitness Feel Good Factory is less about numbers and more about a holistic approach to your nutrition and training. There is mindset and yoga as well as sweaty workouts. I also have a course to qualify Personal Trainers. This seemed like the next step as a lot of people wanted to follow in a similar path to me. As I said, I was always into fitness but it never occurred to me that I could pursue it as a career. I studied Actuarial Mathematics and had a good job in financial software. I found myself feeling a bit lost at the age of 25. I thought this can’t be it for the next 40 years. I spoke to the lady in HR in desperate need of advice on what I could do. She asked what I REALLY wanted to do. I wasn’t sure. I answered ‘I’d just like to stay in the gym all day…’. Then I put the wheels in motion to do a personal training course part-time around my full-time job. I knew I would have to advertise online and I used myself as proof of what you can achieve when you put your mind to it. I shared my journey on instagram, when it was first getting big and things were more organic. I quickly grew to 10,000 followers by the time I qualified as a PT. Within a year I had 60,000 followers and I was on the gym floor. I loved training people one on one. I made so many amazing connections with people who are still friends today. It got to a point where I was a little uneasy again and I had to do some more soul searching. When I really drilled down on what I wanted from life - I pictured just living on a laptop on the beach. I still wanted to be able to help people though. So that’s when I decided to go all in on the online coaching. LOOKING AT YOUR INSTAGRAM YOU SEEM TO DO A LOT OF TRAVELLING ON TOP OF RUNNING YOUR OWN BUSINESS. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BALANCE BOTH? My main values I like to live by are Freedom and Happiness. It makes it easier when you know your true values. You can make tough life decisions a lot easier. I love waking up in different countries. I love not having an alarm every day. I had to make the decision to give up my apartment to give myself the freedom to travel. It also means not seeing family or friends as much as I would like. But I am so happy with where my life is at the moment. In terms of business, I can easily make the decision to pay to outsource most of the work. Again, because one of my values is happiness, I am able to work just enough to have enough money to do what I want.

g a H O iobhan

S

I could work a lot harder and earn a lot more money but it wouldn’t be in line with my values. I do all the support with my clients but I have the business as automated as possible so that I just need to do 1-2 hours per day at the laptop (or even just the phone). This gives me the freedom to travel or be wherever I want to be in the world on that day. WHERE HAS BEEN OR IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO VISIT AND WHY? Definitely Bali. Followed closely by Thailand. SE Asia is a magical place if you let yourself see it. People are very mindful and kind. Life is simple. I drive an old scooter. I don’t style my hair or wear makeup. I feel comfortable in my own skin. I really enjoy the training vibe in Canggu in particular. It is a yoga/ surf town with an Australian influence. Lots of good food, chilled people and of course - great weather! WHAT IS THE DAILY ROUTINE OF A BUSY PERSONAL TRAINER LIKE YOURSELF? I somehow manage to give off the vibe that I am busy but usually I am on my laptop booking flights! My morning routine is very important to me - then I see how the day pans out. Usually: 6AM - Wake naturally. Read 20 mins and Journal 6.30AM - Whatsapps and Messages 7AM - Coffee and DMs 7.30 - 8.30AM - Emails 9AM - Muay Thai or Crossfit Training 11AM - Breakfast with some cool people 12PM - 3PM - Chill by the pool, walk on the beach or read more! 4 - PM - Often a second training session or else a Bintang on the beach watching the sunset, then Dinner. 8 - 9PM - Catch up on phone, post to instagram 9PM - 10PM - Try avoid the phone, read more and fall asleep YOU CURRENTLY OFFER 2 PROGRAMS TO YOUR CLIENTELE, WHICH OUT OF THE 2 IS YOUR MOST POPULAR? The Oh Fitness Furnace is definitely the most popular. It’s interesting because most people don’t realise that the Feel Good Factory is what they really need before they start worrying about getting lean or strong. Unfortunately it is diffcult to market the more holistic approach to people. I find most people just wanna look better naked, fast - which is cool, that’s why I offer both options! DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO FURTHER EXPAND YOUR ALREADY SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS? WHAT DOES THE FUTURE BEHOLD FOR OH FITNESS? I was a little complacent over the last year because things were going well but I’m getting itchy feet to start working a little harder to improve my processes. I am guilty of just living in the now and not looking too far into the future. Luckily I have a business partner who pushes me to branch out and try new things. I have no solid plans yet but I’m just going to keep trying to help people in mind and body!

The perfect coat has been around all year, but the new breed for autumn/winter are even thicker and more luxe-looking paired with a turtleneck for the colder days or just a T-shirt under for the warmer days. Wear over a simple roll neck tucked into some tailored trousers, skirts or just over a dress and you’ve got a great workwear look that requires minimum effort.

5 BEST THINGS TO DO IN KOTOR, WHILE IN MONTENEGRO Planning a trip to Montenegro and looking for the best things to do in Kotor? We’ve covered 5 MUST DO while you there. It didn’t take us long to fall in love by all the delightful things to do in Kotor. This tiny town in Montenegro may be compact, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in stunning views, interesting history, and seemingly endless small streets and alleys to lose yourself in, its truly magical.

BelleVIVE STAY IN KOTOR Staying in Kotor’s Old Town (aka Stari Grad) is a delightful experience that we highly recommend it’s incredibly fun to wake up in the morning and immediately be surrounded by beautiful architecture and endless adorable coffee shops. However, fair warning: on the weekends, the bars and clubs in Stari Grad play music well into the night, so if noise pollution is a concern for you, bring earplugs and try to choose a quieter corner to stay in.

BAY OF KOTOR Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Kotor, in general, is to admire the bay from all angles–but while many of the most popular vantage points may be from the climb up to San Giovanni’s Fortress, the close-up views from right up against the water are definitely worth checking out as well!

OLD TOWN Kotor’s Old Town is such an incredible place to wander, its small and impossible to get extremely lost, but it’s very easy to lose track of exactly where you are, the streets are full of markets and wonders, we absolutely loved it.

The Salience of

Sleep So many people I see in my clinic struggle with the effects of poor sleep. So I would like to talk to you about why a good sleep is so important and how you can go about getting it! A good night’s sleep is as important to health as eating the right things and exercise. Your physical and emotional wellbeing depend on getting enough. Yet we’re living in sleep-deprived times. Some people are even competitive about how little sleep they’re getting, like dragging yourself through the day on four hours’ rest is a badge of honour. Scientists even say we’re now getting an hour or two less sleep each night than we were 60 years ago. And the effect on our bodies is not good. The amount of sleep each person needs varies. Waking up feeling refreshed in the morning is a good indicator and so is being able to wake without an alarm. If you need an alarm to wake up, you are not getting enough sleep. If you don’t get enough sleep, you may not be able to concentrate properly, and become irritable or agitated. You may also have blurred vision, be clumsy, become disorientated or slow to respond, and have decreased motivation. And, on top of that, if you’re tired and cranky, you are significantly less likely to make the best food choices.

Autumn Issue No.18

You might be surprised to learn that, in a computer simulated driving test, those who had had just a few hours sleep were more dangerous on the (virtual) road than the people who had had a few drinks! In fact, the majority of road accidents are caused by tiredness.

z z z

Article By Nichola Flood The purpose of sleep is to rest and recover – and to allow the body to repair itself. These maintenance and repair processes take 7 to 9 hours. Adults need between 7 and 9 hours per night – regardless of what you think you have trained yourself to get by with. BUT JUST HOW DO YOU GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP? The most common cause of insomnia is a change in your daily routine. For example, travelling, change in work hours, disruption of other behaviours (eating, exercise, leisure, etc.), and relationship conflicts can all cause sleep problems. Establishing good sleep hygiene is the most important thing you can do to maintain good sleep. It might also be helpful to keep a sleep diary to help pinpoint any particular problems.

• Keep the temperature in your bedroom comfortable; not too hot, nor too cold. • Use your bed only for sleep and sex. This may help you completely switch off. • Keep the bedroom completely dark, so you’re not disturbed by light, which your brain detects even when your eyes are closed. Eye masks can be useful. • Spend time outdoors to soak up the sun. • Try to take some gentle exercise every day. There is evidence that regular exercise improves restful sleep. This includes stretching and aerobic exercise. A brisk walk ticks both boxes. • Make an effort to relax for at least 5 minutes before going to bed - a warm bath, massage, meditation. • Keep your feet and hands warm. Wear warm socks and/or mittens or gloves to bed. • Consider getting a traditional alarm clock so your smartphone can stay out of the bedroom (see below). Better still, work out how much sleep you need by going to bed 15 minutes earlier until you find that you wake up naturally before your alarm. That’s your personal sleep requirement.

DON’T... • Engage in stimulating activities – like playing a competitive game, watching an edge-of-the seat film, or having an important conversation with a loved one. Even using smartphones and tablets can interfere with sleep, because they emit the same kind of light as the morning sun. • Eat a heavy meal within four hours of going to bed. • Drink caffeine after lunch – like coffee, ‘normal’ and green tea, and colas. • Use alcohol to help you sleep. Alcohol can make sleep more disturbed. • Go to bed too hungry. Have a snack before bed – a glass of milk or banana are ideal. • Try to avoid daytime naps. • Try not to get frustrated if you can’t sleep. Go to bed in a positive mood – “I will sleep tonight”.

PODCAST TWO HOW TO FAIL WITH ELIZABETH DAY

BREXIT & IRISH CROSS BORDER INSURANCE CLAIMS T

he prospect of a no deal Brexit is becoming very real indeed. And the consequences are becoming clear in relation to motor insurance. There will be a large volume of traffic from Ireland to Northern Ireland and vice versa and therefore into and out of the EU. The ability for drivers and companies to recover losses arising from road traffic accidents with vehicles from opposing sides of the border post Brexit needs to be considered. Cross border motor insurance has long been governed by various EU laws that will no longer be applicable for UK registered vehicles and their drivers after a no deal Brexit.

Autumn Issue No.18

In short you should be aware of the following: 1. The 4th Directive Under this Directive citizens who were involved in Road Traffic Accidents abroad were able to pursue compensation in homeland Courts and were also able to claim when the negligent driver of a foreign vehicle was uninsured. This was very convenient. Under a no deal Brexit this will no longer apply. 2. The Motor Insurer’s Bureau (MIB) Apart from its role dealing with uninsured and untraced drivers the MIB also steps in where the insurance company of an insured EU driver fails to deal with a claim. After a no deal Brexit this will cease. Whilst the MIB will still help to identify the foreign insurers they will not pay if that insurer does not engage. 3. Current Claims against Foreign Uninsured Drivers The MIB have said if there is a no deal Brexit, they will only settle these claims if proceedings are issued prior to the 29th March 2019.

Conclusion Many roads for compensation for drivers in cross border accidents will be closed after a no deal Brexit. At Luke Curran & Co. Solicitors located in Newry are well placed to deal with these challenges. We hold practicing certificates in both Ireland and Northern Ireland to facilitate cross border litigation to recover compensation for clients irrespective of the outcome with Brexit. If you have any queries on this subject feel free to call Luke Curran & Co. Solicitors on 00442830267134 or email at law@lukecurran.co.uk
