TOP TIPS TO MANAGING STAFF HOLIDAYS Dealing with multiple holiday requests can prove to be extremely difficult, especially when everyone wants annual leave at the same time. Regardless if it is Christmas or Summer holidays, employers must manage these requests fairly. We have provided some helpful tips on how you can implement an effective holiday management plan and therefore adopt best practice in your business. 1. ENSURE YOU HAVE AN ANNUAL LEAVE POLICY The holiday policy outlines your company’s approach to annual leave, setting any restrictions for employees in regard to if they can or can’t request leave and outlining the process they should follow when requesting this leave. Therefore, employees will know what to expect when requesting leave. 2. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED BASIS – ALLOCATION OF LEAVE Allocating leave on a first come, first served basis is a fair method to manage multiple requests for annual leave at the same time. This approach will have to be clearly outlined in your holiday policy and stresses the need to ensure appropriate time is given for requests by employees. 3. OUTLINE ANY TIME FRAMES WHERE ANNUAL LEAVE IS NOT PERMITTED You can restrict staff from taking leave during particularly busy periods, especially when you require a full workforce due to business demands. You must ensure that all employees are aware of these restrictions in your holiday policy. 4. OUTLINE ANY SPECIFIC DAYS WHEN ANNUAL LEAVE MUST BE TAKEN You may want all your staff to take holidays over a certain period where the business shuts down, such as between Christmas and New Year. Again, you will need to include this is in your holiday policy and indicate to staff that they will need to reserve some of their allowance for this period. 5. LIMIT THE NUMBER OF EMPLOYEES WHO CAN TAKE LEAVE AT THE SAME TIME To satisfy business demands, your business may require a minimum number of employees to be available for work at any time. Therefore, to ensure your business is always adequately resourced, limiting how many people can take holidays from a certain department will ensure demand will always be met. You will need to ensure that staff are aware that the allocation of annual leave is dependent on their fellow colleague’s requests. 6. REQUIRE EMPLOYEES TO PROVIDE APPROPRIATE NOTICE WHEN REQUESTING LEAVE You can specify that employees provide a notice period that is at least twice as long as the period of leave they wish to take. Ultimately, the more notice you have that an employee is off on holidays the better you can prepare.

Issue No.21

7. GIVE APPROPRIATE NOTICE IF YOU MUST REFUSE A HOLIDAY REQUEST As an employer, you can refuse an annual leave request, however you must provide a notice period which equates to the amount of leave requested. An example, if five days of leave have been requested, the employer must give notice of refusal of at least five days before the requested leave period. 8. REVIEW HOLIDAY REQUESTS AT INTERVALS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR Reviewing holiday requests at regular intervals throughout can prove to be helpful as it can spot whether there are too many staff holding onto their annual leave allowance, which could result in a clash and unavailability for leave when allocating. By reviewing requests, you can remind staff of how many days they have left to take and encourage them to utilise this allowance. WHAT IS YOUR EXIT STRATEGY? EVERY SALON OWNER NEEDS AN EXIT STRATEGY, BECAUSE AT SOME POINT, FOR WHATEVER REASON, IT WILL BE TIME TO MOVE ON FROM YOUR BUSINESS. WHEN THINKING ABOUT AND PLANNING YOUR EXIT STRATEGY. the two most fundamental questions to ask yourself are: 1. How am I going to get my money out of the business? 2. How much money will I get? It is advisable to plan your preferred exit strategy well in advance, as it can be a lengthy process. Here are some options to consider: LIQUIDATION: This is the ‘close up shop and sell all the assets’ exit strategy. For a very small salon, especially those that are dependent on the performance of a single individual, liquidation is sometimes the only option, as there’s really nothing else to sell. It might be advisable to restructure the salon so it can be operated by somebody else – turning it into a salon for sale. KEEPING YOUR BUSINESS IN THE FAMILY: This is the dream of many salon owners, as keeping your business in the family ensures that your legacy lives on and provides a living for your heirs. The advantages to this are you may be able to keep a hand in the business in an advisory capacity. However, you need to know that the family members have the skill, interest and commitment to take over.

Issue No.21

SELL YOUR BUSINESS TO MANAGER/EMPLOYEES: This is ideal, as the employee gets an established business that they are familiar with and enthusiastic about. It’s possible to arrange a long-term buyout, which can increase loyalty and greatly motivate staff to work hard to make the business succeed. Again, this arrangement may allow for you to stay on in an advisory capacity. Handled carefully, this option should have very little impact on clients. SELL YOUR BUSINESS ON THE OPEN MARKET: This is the most popular exit strategy option for salon businesses. The business owner puts the salon up for sale for a certain price – and hopefully walks away with the amount of money they want to get for it. A profitable, well run salon should be attractive to buyers and sell quickly. Assets, database, salon name, and good will can be incorporated when valuing the business for sale, maximising the return to the owner. However, salon businesses can be diffcult to value and the selling price may be much lower than expected. If this is your preferred exit strategy, spend time grooming your salon for sale, making it as attractive as possible to potential buyers.

TO GET THE BEST PRICE WHEN SELLING A SALON: • Sell at the right time, for the right reasons – otherwise a buyer will use your circumstances to leverage against you. •

Determine what your salon is actually worth – invest in a professional valuation, while accepting that your salon is worth as much as it will fetch in the market place.

Make sure your house is in order – people want to buy a thriving salon business, not a neglected one.

Keep all business records up to date.

Make sure the premises is well maintained and attractive to potential buyers

Whichever exit strategy you choose, planning in advance gives you time to do it right – and maximise your return on investment.encourage more clients to turn to you instead of a competitor

CONFESSIONS OF A FAMOUS FACE Hands up who has been following Louise Cooney’s inspirational, big move to the Big Apple! Chronicling everything from her house hunt, to living out of a suitcase at a hotel, to collecting the keys of her stunning new apartment, and who knew it was so exciting to watch someone open an Amazon order of a kettle or assembling a flat pack? Indeed it seems this influencer grabbed the hearts of her growing 183,000 Instagram followers as she embarked on her lifelong dream to up sticks, and maybe inspired one or two of us to dust off that dream we have put on hold for some time. Our beauty columnist Linda Pototzki catches up with the Limerick-native to discuss all things skincare, cosmetics and New Year’s resolutions. MORNING TIME Louise kick-starts her day with a gentle facial cleanse using My Clarins Re-Move Purifying Cleansing Milk [Brown Thomas, €19.50], applying with hands and pat dry with a towel. Next up is her antioxidant of choice in the form of Skinceuticals Phloretin CF [Beautyshop.ie, €126 – reduced at the time of filing] before lashing on Skinceuticals Discolouration Defense Serum [thebeautysalon.ie €99 – reduced at the time of filing]. Louise holds these two products in high regard as “I used to have bad pigmentation and it has gotten so much better since I started using those products,” the soft-spoken fashion, lifestyle and travel blogger confesses. Louise guards the face with Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 [Ninethavenue.com, €69.60 – reduced at the time of filing] and for an injection of hydration, Skinceuticals, H.A. Intensifier [Zest Beauty, €91.79] is top of the list. Louise hails this product for working double-time both as a hydrating moisturiser and primer as makeup applies smoothly afterwards. The award-winning influencer completes her morning skincare routine with The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% [Look Fantastic, €6.95] to banish any dark circles or under- eye bags.

NIGHT TIME For the night time, Louise reaches for Garnier Micellar Water [Boots, €5.13]. She laughs: “I know we are not supposed to. I am just so tired by the time the end of the day comes that’s usually what I will do.” Other times Louise will opt for Estée Lauder Advanced Night Micro Cleansing Balm [Allbeauty. com, €36.45]. Sticking to her Irish roots, she is currently loving Pestle & Mortar Exfoliate Acid Toner [Feelunique.com, €22.50 – reduced at the time of filing) and normally applies once or twice a week. The blonde beauty uses an eye cream for her peepers, followed by her favourite moisturiser before blobbing on some of The Ordinary Salicylic Acid [Cloud10 Beauty, €4.70] if a pesky spot raises its head. Louise confides that she has scheduled a consultation with her dermatologist on her next visit home to Ireland. Louise admits: “I should really be using retinol, but I just find whenever I’ve used it, my skin has reacted and it always goes dry. With what I do, I can’t really take the risk of having flaky skin on a day because I might have to take a photo or something. That is one thing I will take up for New Year’s, is doing retinol even if it’s only once or twice a week, you know that’s all. Everyone needs to do it.” FACIAL TREATMENTS Our gal places her trust in the hands of Dr Clodagh O’Shea at Beacon Face and Dermatology Clinic in Dublin for her facial treatments. Before jetting off to the States, Louise said she booked herself in for three HydraFacials [€150 per treatment] and also tried the Pellevé [€250 for just eye area or €650 for full-face treatment]. Louise loves the latter treatment for its benefits in treating any stubborn under-eye bags. The advanced radiofrequency treatment is also effective as an overall skin tightening anti-wrinkle procedure for the entire face, to safely and effectively tackle facial wrinkles without surgery. Since moving to the States, the 27-year-old says her professional treatment regimen is not as structured. She says: “I have been kind of religious with my daily routine, so I don’t really need them [facials], but I will probably get one good facial now when I get home.”

BEAUTIFULJOBS

MAKEUP In terms of make-up, Louise preps the skin with Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Hydrating Primer (Look Fantastic, €39.95), before choosing her favourite foundation of the moment Laura Mercier Flawless Lumière Foundation Radiance Perfecting, shade 2n1 Cashew and Urban Decay Stay Naked Correcting Concealer, shade 30NN (Urbandecay. com, €26). To set the face, Louise uses Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder (Brown Thomas, €42). Louise contours the face by swapping between the Estée Lauder Bronze Goddess Powder Bronzer shade light (Look Fantastic, €39.95) and Inglot Freedom System AMC Bronzing Powder (Inglot, €12.20). To add a hint of sparkle and glow, Louise loves BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed Highlighter (Space NK, €35.95). Louise frames her brows with Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade shade medium brown (Beautybay.com, €21.95). The current mascara of choice for our lady of the hour is Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Classico Mascara (Brown Thomas, €35). To add a pop of colour to the lid, she alternates between Tom Ford Eye Colour Quad, shade Suspicion (Nordstorm, €83.50) and Bobbi Brown The Essential Eye Shadow Palette shade Burnished Bronze (Asos, €44.24).

Louise also notes that meeting new friends is among her top highlight yet since moving to New York. If you are not among the lucky few who qualify for the coveted U.S working visa, Louise recommends to try and find an agency or company who will provide sponsorship, which she admits can be a challenging feat. NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS Louise is excited to be kick-starting 2020 with moving her adorable fur baby Dachshund, Cooper to NYC. For some, a New Year often causes us to take stock and re-evaluate on the previous year, our progress to date and list our dreams for the year ahead. Louise says: “You know, for me, something I want to do in the New Year is to learn to say ‘no’ more. That is something I struggle with and that is in both my personal and business life. I just kind of want to look after myself a bit better like more self-care, taking more time for myself and not feeling guilty about it.” We look forward to continuing to follow Louise (and Cooper) on her great 2020 NYC adventures.

Louise completes her look with a splash of either Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist (Tatcha.com, €43.17) or the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dewy Set Setting Spray (Beautybay.com, €30). Intrigued by Louise’s passion for cosmetics and ‘religious’ skincare regimen, I ask if Louise would be interested to follow in the footsteps of Suzanne Jackson’s trailblazing cosmetic and tanning empire and maybe pursue her own palette formula or cosmetics range. “Yeah, maybe with more of just like a skin-focused, maybe with like a really nice foundation or something like that would be more of interest to me. I haven’t ever been hugely into creating makeup looks or anything like that, but I do like a nice makeup look that looks natural under the skin, a nice finish that’s easy to do. So something like that, I think there is a market for. Not everyone is hugely into having every palette, sometimes people just like having the basics.” LOUISE’S NYC TOP TIPS For those of us that have moving Stateside on our New Year’s resolutions list, Louise recommends having chunky savings as a number one priority.

Issue No.21

Louise admits: “Definitely save money. The last time I was here I hadn’t saved that much but I was a student so I was used to living a different life and used of not spending much but it is an adjustment. It is very expensive here, so you have to be very budget aware and have savings.” Louise’s other words of wisdom include the ability to push the boundaries of your comfort zone and have the energy to meet people. This is key, as she declares you need to form a network of friends which has a key knock-on effect on your overall experience.

On 1 January across the world, millions of us make lofty promises to ourselves. We’ll get healthy, go to gym, drink less wine and eat more greens. We plan to be perfect. By February, most resolutions are gathering dust as we shake off the holidays and wrestle with the reality of work, friendship, parenthood and bills. It doesn’t happen to me so much these days because I have the skills to coach myself out of it but is this your reality? Why can’t you follow through? According to psychologists, even though you might want fast results, you procrastinate. Sustained effort is key to success, so by wanting too much and therefore spreading yourself too thin, you end up at the starting line, feeling defeated already (and even less inclined to begin all over again if you need to). Resolutions are a healthy way to reboot your life – but you need to keep them real. The secret is to fashion long-term, reachable goals that contribute towards what everybody wants, in the end: happiness. Here’s how: 1. YOUR ATTITUDE DETERMINES YOUR ALTITUDE. The way you get there is more important than the goal. It’s no use mentally committing to a 10-mile run three times a week if you’re going to think about it, rather than do it. Instead, stop plotting and start doing: get up, put on your trainers and just exit the front door. Less detail, more action. 2. FOCUS ON PLEASURE, NOT PAIN. Diets are a common New Year goal – but why turn your meal times into a prison sentence? Sustainable, health-boosting plans, such as the Low GL way of eating, are fun, affordable and delicious. Many people associate ‘eating healthily’ with deprivation, rather than delight. Turn those thoughts around – each healthy bite you’re choosing is a gift to yourself.

3. IF IT AIN’T BROKE…WHY FIX IT? Perhaps you’re feeling content with life ‘as is’ right now, so don’t fall into the trap of confusing ‘wants’ with ‘needs’. Modern society is aspirational – everything must be bigger and better. Sometimes, though, things are lovely just as they are. That’s where gratitude comes in. Be grateful for the most insignificant bits of your life. Each act or thought of gratitude eventually fills your happiness tank. 4. SWAP BAD HABITS FOR GOOD ONES. You might not want to give up your Wednesday croissant and hot chocolate fix, but you can. Just replace it with an a healthier, alternative ‘treat’. Many of my clients say swapping out their tea and biscuits for two squares of 75% dark chocolate and a handful of raw cashew nuts was a lot easier than expected. Choose your habits wisely – don’t allow them to choose you.

Article By ‘The Queen of Health’ Nichola Flood 5. IGNORE THE NEWS. While keeping abreast of current affairs is important to most, there’s no need to depress yourself. Being wired to the world is addictive. You’re far more inclined to feel out of control, unhappy and blue if you’re constantly bombarded with bad news. Have an information-free day a week (and yes, that includes browsing Facebook) will help you feel more spiritually rested. 6. RESPECT YOURSELF. The slightest improvement is worth a cheer. Be proud of and acknowledge what you’ve achieved, no matter how small. If you’ve decided to make 2020 the year you’ll fix those niggling health issues or make a commitment to losing weight don’t forget to check in with me and we can arrange a call – Email info@thequeenofhealth. ie with your health & wellness questionswalk to the shop in the cold to buy some chocolate, you probably wouldn’t bother. Ever heard yourself say “take this away from me, so I stop eating?” With food directly in front of you, it’s easy to overindulge. Once it’s removed, you realise you aren’t even hungry – you were just eating because it was there. So keep unhealthy foods out of sight in cupboards or better still, don’t buy them. If you know they’re in the house, you might not be able to resist.

Deciding what to wear in January can be a tricky task. You need to keep warm and recuperate from the preceding festivities but, at the same time, a new year unconsciously calls for a sleeker, more polished and contemporary closet, new year is a good excuse to invest in a new wardrobe. Making just a handful of updates to your existing stash, you can escape that post-Christmas winter wardrobe rut, trying out new styling techniques and investing in a few key pieces that you get the wear of it is the key to go through what’s left of winter and into spring/summer.

EMBRACE COLOURS While it’s perfectly wonderful to have a minimalist sense of style, if you ever crave making a statement but feel silly doing it, new year is a great time to express yourself and to flex your creative muscles. So, if you want to put on bold tights or clash prints or put on something Avant Garde, allow yourself the space to do it. Allow yourself the room to make mistakes this year! Take risks. Try something new, mix your old dress with new bright and bold pieces, even if the trend turns out not to be your style, or that dress actually isn’t as fabulous as you thought it would be, give yourself the room to try and experiment colours, it is a great way to express yourself for the new year. Instead of being afraid it’s going to be too much, let yourself have fun. Try on the statement belt, put on a hat, and go for the bold lipstick.

DRESS DOWN AND LAYER UP Layering can be hard to get right but when you do it’s one of the most effective ways to breathe new life into your sartorial stash, party season might be over but that doesn’t mean you should have to banish your glam pieces to the back of your wardrobe right away. Instead, layer your favourite fancy dress over a thin roll neck jumper and pair with knee-high boots, or take your party-ready skirt and wear it with trainers and an oversized knit. Layering up and clashing it with cosy textures like suede and cashmere are a great way to get the wear out of dresses.

CHOOSE QUALITY NOT QUANTITY Rather than buying fast fashion that you will end up throwing away in a couple of months, be kinder to the environment (and your wallet) and try focusing on quality rather than quantity this year. Don’t just buy ad hoc things because they’re on sale. This year make smarter purchases, before you buy something, see if you can at least make three outfits with it. Think about whether the quality is good. Consider if you even want it or if the price is tempting you. Be savvier with your wardrobe accumulation. Whether you work in an offce, a c asual agency, or from your neighbourhood coffee shop you want your professional style to truly express who you are. One of the biggest mistakes you can make for your wardrobe is dividing your clothes into two islands: work and play. Your offce s tyle d oesn’t n eed to dramatically differ from your evening or weekend style, you just need to be smart about your shopping and styling buy pieces that are good quality so you can mix then with everything and get a great wear of it.

New year, new beginnings...Well that’s what we tell ourselves anyway. But if you’ve started 2020 with a fire (or fat) in your belly and you’re determined to get trim this year then we have three apps this month that are aimed to get you on the right track and stay there. Remember, getting healthy is a marathon not a sprint and summer bodies are made in the winter. So there’s no time like the present to get to it. Put some music on, move to your own rhythm and sing loud & proud “Come on, get up, get ‘appy”

MY FITNESS PAL My Fitness Pal has been around for 15 years, but there is a reason this app is a constant favourite. With this app you can design a weight loss programme, with calorie counting, that is built around your height, age and weight. By keeping a food diary or journal you are more likely to reach your health goals. As well as logging what you put into your body, with this app you can also measure what you put out with the exercise you do. Or better still, with walking being one of the best forms of exercise, this app also acts like a pedometer.

Issue No.21

This app is also supported via your web browser, so you can keep a log of your intake and outtake from your phone, tablet or computer. This app is free and has always been that way. If you’re new to fitness apps, give this one ago.

GET

If just the thought of trying to run 5km makes you sweat. Or the cost of a gym membership makes your purse strings tighten. Or the thought of trying to squeeze into spandex like Jane Fonda makes you shudder, never fear there is help on hand from the Active 10 app. This app is all about the activity we were born and designed to do; walking. Walking is an excellent form of exercise as its free, relatively easy and has loads of benefits, such as reducing stress levels! The question is how much you should do and how to monitor it. With Active 10 they encourage you to walk a minimum of 10 minutes per day at a brisk pace (about 4.8km or 3 miles per hour pace) and that’s it. The app sends you notifications to encourage you to get you going and even has a built-in meter to work out if you have walked briskly enough. This free app is a brilliant way to start your fitness journey.

FITOCRACY Ok, so working out may not be for everyone. That doesn’t mean you don’t want to get healthy. Perhaps you would just prefer to play Candy Crush than do crunches. If this is the case, then Fitocracy could be for you. This fitness app is an “online game and social network that aims to use gamification to help users improve their fitness.” This app is designed for newbies as well as experienced fitness folks, but what’s different about it is that it beautifully pairs engaging fitness routines with gaming. You score points when you have completed workouts, unlocked achievements and reached your personal goal. This fitness app is all about the fun. Whatever way you decide to get healthy in 2020, remember to seek medical advice and set your own pace. We all march to the beat of our own drum, don’t be afraid to take time to find your rhythm. If you have an app that you love, or one you’re launching, get in touch and we’ll do our best to get it featured in our ‘Get Appy’ section.

Marvelous Mediterranean Sun - Santorini Santorini might be small at only 18km at its widest, but it sure is mighty. This island is quintessentially Greek with its white-washed buildings and its stunning and vibrant blue roof tops. The ruggedness of this island and its black sands were formed after a volcano erupted in the 16th century and because of this the land is mountainous and lush. There is no volcano on Santorini, but you can take a boat trip to the islands nearby and actually hike up and take in the stunning views. But if you like walking, why not walk from one side to the other and truly explore what Santorini has to offer. The main city of Fira, sits 587 steps above the port below and is geared towards tourists with its restaurants, bars and clubs.
