MAKE THE MOST OF CHRISTMAS NOW IS THE TIME TO PLAN YOUR BEAUTY SALON’S CHRISTMAS TRADE. GET READY TO BOOST YOUR SALES, ENJOY THE PARTY SEASON, AND LOOK FORWARD TO A HEALTHY START TO THE NEXT YEAR. Do you want to know how to attract more customers to your beauty salon this Christmas season? Use the elements that captivate the senses of passers by: make them stop, come in and shop. Music and movement are traditional attention getters, but aroma can be an overlooked resource to assist shoppers to part with their money in your salon. Sound, smells and visual merchandise will get attention where a pretty, but static and ordinary display may go unnoticed and may not give your salon that competitive advantage. The Christmas Season is always an opportune time of the year to make some profit for your beauty salon or spa and to increase beauty retail sales. Selling gift vouchers or gift cards is a great way to keep clients coming back and stay busy after the holiday season. Gift vouchers can prompt multiple appointments because the voucher has already been paid for. 5 EASY WAYS TO INCREASE YOUR CHRISTMAS VOUCHER SALES

Winter Issue No.20

Place gift vouchers around the salon. Use these items as part of the decor, so that clients are aware that gift vouchers are available. Change these items at least once per week to maximize exposure. Send an email newsletter to your database highlighting the benefits of gift vouchers. Announcements about gift voucher availability can help to increase voucher sales and promote your brand. Make sure to time your email distribution appropriately. A ten day lead time before the Christmas rush is a good starting point to help clients begin thinking about giving your vouchers as gifts.

Include a coupon or offer with purchase. Give the giver a small gift such as a free product, a coupon for a future service they can use for themselves, or a salon voucher with a smaller amount already loaded onto it. Incentives to purchase a gift voucher can boost salon retail sales and encourage more clients to turn to you instead of a competitor when narrowing down the field of choices. Selling gift vouchers regularly helps to secure your business and help to maintain a healthy cash flow. With the right marketing strategy it can help to promote your brand too. Continue to focus on increasing voucher sales all year round and keep your appointment books full, even during the non-holiday season! MAKE YOUR WEBSITE OPEN FOR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING BUSINESS By early December ensure your website is completely up to date and ready for Christmas shoppers. On the home page, actively promote gift sets and vouchers. Make it EASY and SIMPLE to order on line. Whether you are selling on line or just in salon, or both, concentrate your salon marketing and selling efforts on the first five and third five days of the month. Most people get paid on the last day of the month or on the 15th and research has found that 64% of people spend the bulk of their discretionary income within the first five days after pay day.

Make sure your salon contains information about gift vouchers. Ensure your website is up to date about how easy it is to purchase gift vouchers from you. Provide lots of information about gift voucher availability, highlighting the benefits of giving a gift voucher to your salon.

Send invoices separately from vouchers or packages. Some online customers will send your products or voucher directly to their recipients. Make sure you don’t mail any product brochures or invoices which list the prices, ruining the gift experience for the person. Instead email the invoice directly to the purchaser.

Offer free gift wrapping. Clients and shoppers appreciate this extra touch and this step adds more perceived value to the purchase. Invest in some eyecatching envelopes, decorative ribbon or small gift boxes for your vouchers and turn it into a real ‘gift’.

Plan and kick-start your Christmas retail and voucher campaign now, let December be your most profitable time of this year!!

Darcybow reminds me of an old fashioned fairytale ,little girls dressed in sumptuous velvets and intricately smocked classic styles, reminiscent of times gone by. Created by Mum of three, Triona’s whimsical designs have been inspired by traditional classic tailoring and also her own childhood memories. Each piece is lovingly made by hand, designed for your child’s comfort whilst never compromising on style. Darcybow is clothing designed to become her favourite, a piece that is always treasured . “I wanted to recreate an old way where people bought clothing that was designed to be worn and worn again and again. The clothes we wore were part and parcel of our childhood memories, we all remembered that “good dress’,a dress that was beautifully made, worn to all occasions and then passed on ,a dress that held many memories within.I think people are really moving away from fast fashion and are once again enjoying buying less but buying better.” Triona now blends her passion for design ,being a Mum and her job as long haul cabin crew .The brand is in its third year and gaining huge popularity both at home and abroad with stockists in the UK and USA, aswell as Ireland. Dresses have been worn by the daughters of famous faces including Armie Hammer’s daughter and Uk vogue contributor Alice Naylor Leyland. Uk fashion influencer “thefashionbugblog” claims Darcybow is a new brand discovery with the cutest dresses. This years Winter collection echoes the same old world charm of luxurious velvets and cashmere capes. Traditional tartans and dark forest green or plum velvets make the perfect choice for Christmas morning.

Winter Issue No.20

The Collection has also proven very popular with brides to be this year as flower girl dresses for winter weddings. The signature Darcybow Capes tend to sell out fast, the beauty of the design means at least two years wear. Triona is very conscious of the slow fashion movement and incorporates these values into her designs, most styles will last beyond one seasons fit and the quality of the fabric is evident meaning they will truly last and wash, forever. All the styles are limited edition and are never mass produced.

BelleVIVE

This Winter also seen the launch of a new collection - The Communion Collection. It was a natural progression for the brand due to it’s classic style.Triona believes a communion dress is a very special buy, a communion day is a huge Irish tradition and a special day for family .She remembers both the day and her dress vividly but she also holds a special memory of a day trip to Dublin to choose her dress.

Winter Issue No.20

With this in mind, Triona has collaborated with two other Irish designers, Liwu jewellery and prettybowtiques.ie. A special day needs a special dress so Triona has designed just ten limited edition dresses. This Communion Collection hosts appointments in beautiful locations around Ireland ,where Mum and daughter will have a private appointment with all 3 designers. “We have really enjoyed these days out ourselves , we have loved meeting all the girls, their mums and grandmothers and sharing all our own memories of our own dresses .The little girls have loved having this special time time together with their Mums and I hope we have helped in creating a new memory ,whilst doing so.” To ensure exclusivity, these dresses can only be purchased through Darcybow and can only be viewed and fitted through appointment only. The three mums are already taking appointments and planning for next year. Darcybow will be at Gifted in the RDS from the 4th-8th of December. BEAUTIFULJOBS In the hair and beauty industry we are very fortunate to be surrounded by beautiful woman but I feel myself twice as fortunate to be able to style woman who are not only beautiful but who have been refined by the forges of life and who have emerged stronger and wiser. Those women who juggle home and career and still manage to look stylish and beautiful. Those woman who need to wear many different hats - partner, mother and business associate - with style and grace and a healthy sense of humour! In our youth obsessed society beautiful mature women are often overlooked in spite of their, often, astounding achievements. Ageing is often seen as a path to obscurity and mature ladies overlooked in terms of vitality and usefulness. Yet these wonderful women have the benefit of experience, knowledge and compassion. In Ireland and indeed in many parts of the world, there is still a disparity in salaries of men and women. In addition to which women often have to work twice as hard to reach the top of the corporate ladder. Happily I have had the pleasure of looking after some of the most beautiful, smart and successful ladies in diverse range of professions. There is the company CEO who has been awarded multiple accolades every year for the past 10 years for entrepreneurship and service excellence but who still manages to find the time to bring her daughters and sons to dance classes or football practice. There is the legal professional who works a 12 hour day most weeks but still finds time between family and work to champion the cause of the dispossessed and underprivileged. There is the stay at home mother who has to maintain the home, clean, cook, walk the dog, fetch the children from school, comfort and guide the children and encourage her partner 365 days a year and who still manages to be beautiful- both inside and out. Finally there are the teachers who lead by example with firmness and compassion - non-judgemental but always ready to lend an ear and whisper works of encouragement and guidance.

These are the women we at Moyo would like to honour today with this, the IVY, collection. Those strong and fearless warriors who redefine the definition of womanhood. These women who do not conform to society’s constraints, who feel confident enough to challenge the traditional taboos around sexuality and behavioural norms. Women who do not feel the need to behave the way society dictates and who are free to love whomever they please without fear of reprimand or censure. Women who feel confident to wear whatever they please regardless of age and suitability. Women who have weathered the storms of life and who have emerged more beautiful because of the journey. To the women of Dublin, the women of Ireland and the women of the world we Moyo salute you and we love you. We would like to thank the Ivy Restaurant in Dawson street for the use of their beautiful space and Ellen B Boutiques (Clontarf and Malahide) who sponsored the gorgeous outfits for the models. Credits: Models Luda and Jana, Dan Silva and Dan Butler for the videos and photography and the whole Moyo team for giving up their weekend together this wonderful project. Finally we would like to salute Woman’s Aid Ireland for the wonderful work they do for the woman’s cause. Moyo would like to donate any and all proceeds from this project to Women’s Aid Ireland as a small gesture of gratitude for everything they do for the women of Ireland. Meet Group CEO & Founder of Dublin’s Best Hair Stylists & Expert Hair Salon BROWN SUGAR Where did it all start? What led to you becoming the founder of Dublin’s Best Hair Stylists & Expert Hair Salons? My Sugar Culture journey began back in 2005 when I was working under my father’s guidance (who was very successful in his own right with a well-known salon chain), As a hairdresser and salon manager. I had the spark of an idea for a high-end salon offering, combining both hair and makeup under one roof. I was fortunate that a great property became available at that time on South William Street, as the fashion wholesaling trade began to move out of the area, and I could envision a gorgeous boutique salon thriving in this area, which is so close to Dublin’s busiest shopping district, Grafton Street. After securing the lease on what is now known as our flagship salon, Brown Sugar No 50 South William Street, I assembled a team of the very best hair and makeup professionals, my idea became a reality and I couldn’t have ever dreamed of the success we experienced thereafter. Your business has become a huge success. What did you do differently that lead to this stardom? What set us apart from our competitors, is the unique service we offer. The Brown Sugar brand has become synonymous with a first-class hair and beauty experience, pairing highfashion hair and beauty, in a boutique setting, with attention to detail in every corner of the service. From head massages in a luxurious therapy suite, make-up from award-winning artists in a private makeup suite, to prosecco on arrival. Brown Sugar brought something new to the maintenance of going for your cut and colour, turning it from a chore into a luxury experience. It is the overall experience which we offer, that led to our success. Who or what inspires you on a daily basis? I’d say I am driven and motivated by success. The industry which I am in is constantly evolving, pushing boundaries so I’m constantly looking to see what others in the industry are doing, in my local area and on a global level. Leaders in the industry inspire me and other hairdressers motivate me to always work hard.

Winter Issue No.20

Who is the most interesting person you have met and why? I meet interesting people all of the time, but I had a very interesting encounter with writer, Salman Rushdie. Salman was living in Ireland, in hiding at the time I believe, after the fatwa encouraged Muslims to kill him because they claimed his book The Satanic Verses was blasphemous. He was the most infamous author, on the planet at that time, so it was a surreal experience for me to get to meet and converse with him. We can see you are a family man; how do you balance career and life balance? For me, family always comes first. I have always had a very close relationship with my mother & father, and my siblings. My brother Frank works alongside me, as technical manager in Sugar Culture, and I’m also very close with my two sisters, Meg and Kerrie. My fiancé Aimee works in the industry also, so when it comes to balancing life at home with her and my five beautiful children, we work together as team. Aimee helps me to divide my attention when it’s called for. We both have a very hands-on approach with the kids but when work needs my attention, she allows me the ability to turn my focus to that. There is no “one rule” fits all, just a commitment to support one another. Teamwork makes the dream work, or so we say in Sugar Culture.

Mark O’Keeffe You also super fashionable, what designers do you love? And what is your favourite item of clothing? Where do you shop for your clothes? My favourite brand to wear would probably be The Kooples. I am a big fan of their tailoring. It’s quite contemporary and cool and generally my go-to. Normally I’d shop in Brown Thomas. I’m a big fan of Bricks & Mortar stores. I enjoy the ritual on retail shopping, but they have since discontinued TheKooples in Brown Thomas, so I buy online from time to time. I’d have to say my favourite item of clothing is a Kooples Mac with matching overcoat. I feel a little bit like a James Bond when I wear it, but some people say I’m more like Inspector Gadget. What is the daily routine of a busy businessman like yourself ? I’m usually up every morning at 6 am and in the gym at 6.30 am. I train for 1 hour and then head home to my house in Portmarnock. I shower and make breakfast for the kids, before dropping them to school. Most days I am in work for 9 am. I spend my first hour or so in my office, with my office team, who update me on a number of different things, from accounts to marketing and anything that needs my immediate attention. I then tend to get around to each of my salons, touching base with the teams and clients. I love how much variety that brings to my day and how my day is never the same. Every Friday & Saturday I can be found working behind the chair with my regular clients, in South William Street, but I always aim to be home by 6 pm to cook dinner and spend time with Aimee and the kids. What top grooming product can you not live without? I love Eight & Bob aftershave. While not a grooming product it’s something I used regularly. You never know who you’ll bump into, every day so I like to make sure I am smelling good. I believe it was also a favourite of JFK - so if its good enough for a president! Where is the most amazing place you have visited? What does the future hold for you and Brown Sugar? Any new projects in the works? Something exciting for customers and clients to look forward to perhaps? Probably New York! As cities go, I think it’s magnificent. A buzzing hub of entertainment with so much to do and be inspired by. It has been quite a busy year for us, we just launched two new salons, in Frascati Centre, Blackrock. Our male-offering Sugar Daddy Barbers has got its second outpost and we brought our nail and beauty offering, Sugar Coated to fruition. We launched in mid October, so the paint is still drying in those two new units. We will be putting all of our efforts into making these a success and continuing to drive the experience in our other salons. However, what I can tell you is that we are in the very early stages of discussion to launch another ‘Sugar’ brand. We’re working on the development of a new cool hair and beauty bar that harnesses all the things our clients know and love our Sugar Culture salons, in a neat express package. We have aptly named it… Sugar Rush!

Of course the number one reason why anyone would hire clothes is for financial reasons. The price tag on the high end labels that most people aspire to wear is just too hefty for most, however if you were to rent that little black dress for your special occasion, you can have access to your favourite designer without racking up the credit card debt. We often buy a cheaper of the rack dress for an occasion because we know we will only wear it once or twice and be done with it but with dress hire you can really look fabulous and different for the same price and that tight wardrobe space is not taken up either. Not only does renting your outfit make sense financially, it is also environmentally friendly. It is an unbelievable fact that with UK households sending 300,000 tonnes of fashion waste to landfill every year and the average number of times a garment is worn is dropping by 36% over the last 15 years. Our society is really beginning to educate themselves in consequences of our day to day activity. People are beginning to eat less meat and veganism is becoming more and more acceptable, clean beauty is also growing and now it is happening with the fashion industry with hiring clothes becoming more common. Hiring a dress means that you can look fab at every function you attend and be proud of the fact that you have done your bit for the environment also. Finally, who wants to be seen twice in the same outfit. Head turning dresses for example the Rixo Lucy dress or the Alice McCall Zen dress, are so different that it is hard to wear them to two occasions where photos will inevitably end up on social media. Hiring a dress allows you to wear a new dress by different designer at each event you attend. At Willow, we stock designers such as Zimmermann, Rixo, Self Portrait, Alice McCall, Thurley and Kevan Jon. We stock sizes 6-16 and prices start as low at ÂŁ40 per hire. Viewing is by appointment only.

Willow Designer Dress Hire is a newly opened business located in Newry Co Down owned by myself, Cara Heaney. After doing a recent and long overdue clear out of my wardrobe, I realised just how many dresses I had that I had only worn once to weddings, christenings etc. I had paid a lot of money for these but some were long out of date and I just wouldn’t feel comfortable wearing them again. So into the charity bag they went This got me thinking that I probably wasn’t the only one with lots of wardrobe space taken up by dresses worn once and I dreaded to think of the amount of money spent on these. It really was such a waste. To be honest I had never thought of hiring dresses before but something just clicked that it would be a great service to offer. You would still get that great feeling of wearing a fabulous dress and not being out the money. The more I researched this, I discovered that there was a gap in the local market for this service but not only for just ordinary dresses, what about really nice high end labels – the kind you see on the more popular social media influencers. The sort of dresses that can set you back £400-£600 at full price. I had obviously found hire service suppliers online – mostly in Dublin and London and they do formal style gowns. None of these were easily accessible to me where I could go try on the dress and then decide if I wanted to take it or not and none specialised in the dresses that you wear to normal occasions such as weddings.

Winter Issue No.20

Why rent? Renting clothes is not a novel idea (hire companies such as Rent the Runway have been in business for over 10 years) however there is an increased focus on the environmental consequences of fast fashion which made the idea of sharing clothes more popular. People are sharing all sorts of things these days, from sharing your car to taxi people via uber or sharing a room in your property via air b&b so sharing clothes is becoming increasingly the norm.

Six ways to avoid Christmas

Weight Gain

(and still have fun)

It’s normal to want to indulge over Christmas, but the number of people joining diet clubs and gyms in January speaks volumes about how many regret their festive binges. But the fact is, you can still enjoy the festive season and not gain weight. For most people ‘Christmas’ is actually just a handful of days – Christmas Eve, the Day itself, Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and maybe a party or two along the way. The trick is to not feel left out by integrating treat foods into the context of an overall healthy diet. So one mince pie, not four, in one afternoon. And as long as you have some strategies in place before the festive season, there’s no reason why you can’t start the New Year looking and feeling fantastic. Here are my 6 tips for how to avoid gaining weight over Christmas, and still have fun:

1 EAT SMART If you don’t have a plan (for parties, going out, visiting friends, having family over and so on) you are setting yourself up to fail. Be clear in your mind what your healthy options are, and if you know you’re going somewhere you won’t be able to eat the right foods, take some nutritious snacks or meals with you. Fill up on some protein-rich ham or leftover turkey, or keep sugar cravings at bay with a homemade energy ball before you hit the party circuit.

Winter Issue No.20

2 PORTION CONTROL Eating from a smaller dish causes you to eat less, because the food itself looks more substantial. If you transfer food from a 12-inch plate to a 9-inch plate, it looks like more food and you, therefore, feel more satisfied. 3 AVOID EXCESS Christmas excess can lead to hangovers, and hangovers often lead to poor food choices, especially a tendency to seek out sugar and starchy carbs. Research reveals that fat from certain foods, including ice cream and roast potatoes, goes straight to the brain and tells you to eat more! It triggers messages that are sent to the body’s cells, warning them to ignore appetitesuppressing hormones that regulate our weight. The effect can last for a few days, sabotaging efforts to get back to a healthy diet afterwards. Dr Deborah Clegg, who conducted the research, explains: “Normally our body is primed to say when we’ve had enough, but that doesn’t always happen. When you eat something high in fat, your brain gets ‘hit’ with the fatty acids and you become resistant to insulin (which regulates blood sugar levels) and leptin (the hormone that suppresses hunger). Since you are not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.”

Article By Nichola Flood 4 OUT OF SIGHT If you want a chocolate and all you have to do is reach to the tin and help yourself, chances are you’ll end up eating 3 or 4. But if you have to get your shoes on, walk to the shop in the cold to buy some chocolate, you probably wouldn’t bother. Ever heard yourself say “take this away from me, so I stop eating?” With food directly in front of you, it’s easy to overindulge. Once it’s removed, you realise you aren’t even hungry – you were just eating because it was there. So keep unhealthy foods out of sight in cupboards or better still, don’t buy them. If you know they’re in the house, you might not be able to resist. 5 REMEMBER VEGETABLES Veggies don’t need to be doused in oil and roasted to within an inch of their lives to taste good. One of my favourite festive side dishes are thinly sliced Brussels sprouts, which I flash-fry with garlic, pine nuts and a dash of white wine. It’s so tasty, I make it all year round. Slow-cooked red cabbage and apple is another fantastic way to get some much-needed nutrients. 6 BE KIND TO YOURSELF It is the season of goodwill, after all. If you slip up, don’t beat yourself up or see it as an excuse to write off the rest of the day and eat everything in sight. Just chalk it up as one bad decision and move on. You can get back on track tomorrow. Have a great Christmas and I look forward to sharing more of my Health & Wellness tips in 2020.

BLAZER OR JACKET

Winter Issue No.20

The main difference between a blazer and suit jacket is that a suit jacket features matching trousers. However, suit jackets are also typically more formal than standard blazers. As such, they aren’t always ideal for casual looks, but it is possible to make them work, especially if the style is unstructured. To do so, try breaking the suit up and teaming your jacket with chinos. Alternatively, embrace the whole suit and wear it with a T-shirt and sneakers.

Party S THE PARTY BLAZER

While a blazer may be your go-to for formal occasions, the classic jacket can be twisted for the party season and will work surprisingly well for a variety of looks, including those that are casual. So, if you’re looking to achieve a relaxed yet refined appearance, a blazer can make a perfect choice. Of course, to nail a casual or formal blazer outfit, there are several factors to consider, including colour, material, fit, and styling depending the event.

THE NEW SMART CASUAL

Nailing a festive party dress code can prove tricky when it’s not done properly. A great way to pull this off is a well-tailored jacket, you can stand out from the crowd while still adhering to the party dress code, a turtle neck under the blazer can also give a sophisticated and party ready look without being extra, if you love the classic look, just a formal white shirt will look as nice.

We’ve shared some great apps with our wonderful readers in 2019 in our ‘Get ‘Appy’ segment. We hope that we have bought you apps that have enhanced all parts of your life. This month we have decided to pick apps that are all about bringing people together and about looking forward to the future. We have a little something for everyone. So for the last time in 2019, “Come on, get up, get ‘appy!

CATCH IT The festive season is a time for happiness and good will to all. Yet, for some people this time of year can be overwhelming and can cause stress, anxiety and feeling alone. Which is why we have chosen the “Catch It” app this month. This app is designed to teach you how to turn negative thoughts into positive ones and improve your mental wellbeing. “Catch It uses cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help you change the way you think and feel about things.” This app works with you and helps you to record and rate how you’re feeling and then build upon this to catch patterns in your mood.

Winter Issue No.20

If you are feeling alone or like everything is on top of you this festive season, then try this app or reach out to one of the many support networks available. You are not alone, even if you think you are!

GET ‘APPY

One thing that is great about the longer nights this time of year is the blanket of stars and planets above us. Yet, have you ever wondered what the group of stars shaped like a saucepan is called, or why one star is bigger, brighter and a different colour. Well, with Star Walk 2 you can have all your questions answered. This app is designed to work like a compass to the stars, so if you have your locations turned on, on your phone, you can simply lift the app towards the sky and you will see what constellations are there and what they are called, but more, you can find out more about them too. This app is great at telling you about any celestial events that are coming, like super Moons or meteor showers. It’s definitely an app you can use on your own or as some family fun. Beautifully designed and with some very atmospheric music too. This app has a free mode, but we highly recommend paying for it to unlock all of the amazing features.

JOY As well as presents and mince pies, there is something else that brings people together. It’s not only the popping of champagne but the popping of a certain question that fills our hearts with glee. So if you are one of the lucky ones to have found your Prince or Princess Charming, then the Joy app is for you. This is an online wedding planner that helps you build and create a wedding website, which you manage from the app. But don’t worry if you’ve never built a website before as it is very user friendly. You can create your guest list, invite them via email, and your loved ones can even RSVP online. This app even lets you create a wedding album where people can upload photos. The best thing about this app, is the price; it’s currently free to use and will stay that way if you’ve registered before they bring in charges. Weddings certainly aren’t cheap, but this nifty little app can certainly help with some of the work! If you have an app that you love, or one you’re launching, get in touch and we’ll do our best to get it featured in our ‘Get Appy’ section.

STAR WALKS 2

There is no doubt this is the most wonderful time of the year. All the lights sparkle, people are jolly and bright, and for the festive season everything feels right in the world. So this New Years’ Eve why not have one that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. This month in Roam for Activity we have chosen three European cities that host epic and different types of New Years’ Eve parties that you’d be mad to miss! Whether you’re a clubber, festival goer, or want something more sophisticated, you’ll be spoiled for choice.

Berlin - Germany If your type of NYE is to dance into the early hours then Berlin is the place for you. It is the clubbing capital of Europe and it’s not hard to see why. The city offers a special clubbers ticket which covers eight different venues. The ticket cost €93, which might seem steep, but when you think that covers 8 clubs and 26 dance floors, plus free drinks and a shuttle bus or ship, it’s reasonable enough.

Winter Issue No.20

You can also kick off your party with the 2 km street party with live music, food stalls and entertainment which starts at the Brandenburg Gate. And don’t forget to catch the stunning fireworks at Alenanderplatz at midnight and then dance until dawn. Berlin is the city that offers the very best for dancers this New Years’ Eve.

Madrid - Spain Madrid is a stunning family friendly city which this NYE offers a huge and packed city party. The streets are a hive of activity, which attracts locals and visitors from all over the world. This New Years’ Eve you could join the party in Madrid and feast on the tapas and bottomless (or so it seems) Cava.

Winter Issue No.20

Enjoy the fireworks at Puerta del Sol at midnight, yet make sure you have 12 grapes in your hand. It’s a Spanish tradition to hold 12 grapes in your hand and them eat them when the midnight hour strikes. Each grape is said to bring you good luck for the year ahead; one grape for every month. Wash down those seedless and sugary grapes with another glass of Cava and see 2020 in with true Spanish style.

BelleVIVE Paris - France One of the most elegant, romantic and sophisticated cities in the world, Paris won’t let you down on New Years’ Eve. Known as The City of Lights, it’s sure to fill you with joy and happiness. You have a huge choice of ways to celebrate your NYE. You could sail down the Seine where you can truly admire the festive lights and vibe of the city. Treat yourself to a champagne dinner and celebrate by the Eiffel Tower, or you can visit the epically different party at L’Aquarium, and dance surrounded by fish and sea creatures. The fireworks are saved for Bastille Day in the French capital, but don’t despair, they offer a spectacular laser show at the Champs Elysées in true Parisian style.

PODCAST TWO THE CREATE UNKOWN

NEW LAW - Dangerously Overtaking a Cyclist D

RIVERS BEWARE of those cyclists who take up too much of the road, cause traffic build ups and are a danger to those around them!

We have all been frustrated by the actions of a cyclist in front of us on the road but until you sit in the saddle for yourself on a busy road and experience the tailwind of a passing vehicle you have no idea of the danger that driving too close can cause.

Winter Issue No.19

You are at the mercy of the drivers around you and even more vulnerable than a pedestrian. A cyclist is placing his trust and his life in the hands of drivers travelling from behind and outside of their line of sight. It takes little speed and proximity to knock an unsuspecting cyclist to one side and into the side of the road. Any fall from a bicycle can have major injuries with broken collar bones and deep gashes often seen as a lucky escape from more catastrophic injuries arising from the impact with a vehicle. Our roads are in permanent need of repair with potholes appearing in an instant in front of a cyclist with often little or no suspension to cushion the shuddering vibration from the force of the contact.

So the simple reality is that drivers must be aware of the risk that cyclists face, the fact that they may need to swerve to avoid hazards and give them space to maneuver whether they like or not. Otherwise drivers will now face the consequences of a fine of â‚Ź120 and three penalty points under new law at best or at worst the guilt from having seriously harmed someone by their dangerous driving. Too many cyclists suffer from close passes and near misses. Too many are being killed and injured on our roads. The Road Traffic (Traffic and Parking) (Amendment) Regulations 2019 builds targets those drivers who put cyclists at risk. New signage will warn motorists to provide for adequate overtaking space for cyclists. The signage includes providing for a one metre distance overtaking space (in locations with speed limits less than 50km/h) and 1.5 metre distance (where speed limit exceeds 50 km/h).

So drivers leave room for those frustrating cyclists or you just might end up paying dearly with a criminal conviction and a claim for personal injuries against you. If you fall foul of the new law or have been the victim of dangerous overtaking of a cyclist please contact us for free legal advice as to your rights at Luke Curran & Co. SHOULD EMPLOYER’S BE ALLOWED TO TAKE EMPLOYEE’S TIPS? Plans have been announced for a new legal obligation to be implemented in the UK and Ireland, which would ensure that employers’ hand over all tips to their employees. This will be created via a bill and has been in the pipeline for several months. Simply this means employers will have to distribute tips among workers “on a fair and transparent basis”. With the principles being set out in the proposed bill. In the hospitality sector, tips, gratuities and service charges make up a significant share of employees’ income these roles typically pay minimum wage and employees rely on tips to make up their wages. However, recent research has discovered that a minority of employers retain at least 10% of their workers’ tips which some even keeping the entirety of tips received.

Winter Issue No.20

However, this new bill does not come without its challenges. Unfair tipping practices are becoming harder to track due to societal change in consumer spending. There is an increasing number of consumers now paying tips on card rather than in cash directly to the workers, with approximately 80% of tips are now gifted on card. The focus on this proposed bill has been ongoing as a result of the UK campaign Fair Tips, Fair Pay Campaign which revealed that a number of large restaurant chains were taking staff tips and using them as a method of ‘top up’ for the wages of employees who were being paid under the minimum wage threshold. If this bill is voted on and passed, this bill will apply to England, Wales and Scotland. However, Northern Ireland won’t be protected by the new bill as a result of Stormont suspension. Similarly, to this the Republic of Ireland have made arrangements to amend the Payment of Wages Act. This amendment means that employers that fail to clearly display their policy on their premises will be subject to a fine.
