Welcome to the Beacon Arts Centre’s Spring Season What better way to brighten the long winter days than with a visit to Greenock's Beacon Arts Centre, here to light up the lives of all those in Inverclyde and beyond?

Come along during the day and get involved in our fantastic creative learning activities, including a first series of Masterclasses – everything from Playing the Fool to Playing with Shakespeare – which will open windows on new worlds of imagination. Or perhaps immerse yourself in one of the wide-ranging series of arts exhibitions, curated by Fraser Taylor, an Honorary Professor at Glasgow School of Art and co-founder of The Textile Collective.

And of course it goes – almost – without saying that the Beacon is the place to be for a fantastic evening out.

If you want to get up close and personal and hear the inside stories of extraordinary lives, then lively chat and a few surprises from the doyenne of Scottish comedy, Elaine C Smith, and footballing supremo Gordon Strachan should fit the bill.

If it's dance you're looking for, Strictly's Ian Waite and Vincent Simone, The Ballroom Boys, provide the grace and style, while Ballet West bring the classical poise of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Spirit of the Dance the toe-tapping, leg-kicking dazzle and flair.

Warm-hearted and nostalgic comedy comes to the Beacon with Liam Dolan and Johnny Mac's affectionate tribute to ‘Francie and Josie’, and the will-they, won't they return to the music-hall stage of The Rainmen.

TV's Patrick Monahan gives his low-down on modern life, from living in a caravan to living it up on the ski slopes, and Edinburgh Fringe award-winners Croft & Pearce present their new sketch show.

We have a fantastic music programme this season, from tributes to Doris Day and Leonard Cohen to The Hollies and ABBA, traditional music from harpist Karen Marshalsay, new kids on the block Gnoss and the raucous Tannahill Weavers, plus a Fiddlers’ Rally and Inverclyde Burns Club’s annual competition, jazz, swing/big band and country and western - the Beacon has all angles covered.

Kids and families aren't forgotten either.

Unlock the gate to the Secret Garden, see the world from an animal's viewpoint in Scottish Opera's enchanting Fox-Tot!, explore environmental issues in The Man Who Planted Trees, get ready to fly with Whirlybird – and see everyone's favourite cheeky wee scamp, Oor Wullie, like you've never seen him before!

The Beacon is delighted, too, to host Inverclyde Musical Youth Theatre's production of The Sound of Music (climb every mountain to bag a ticket!) and The Albany’s overnight sensation Hairspray: The Musical.

One last thing. Don't forget that the stunning Gallery Suite may be just the setting for your special event. With its jaw-dropping panoramic views across the Clyde making this a unique venue, it's yet another reason to make sure the Beacon Arts Centre is well and truly on your arts and culture radar.

Beacon Young Company offers a structured opportunity to young people aged 16 to 21 in Inverclyde who are interested in pursuing a career in the arts. The Young Company will have a focus on devised work, how to become a theatre-maker and will make its debut at Mull Youth Theatre TEN Festival.

We are absolutely delighted to welcome Fraser Taylor as Guest Curator for art exhibitions at Beacon Arts Centre. Fraser is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, working across a wide range of media including drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and animation. Fraser will curate an inspiring and regularly changing programme of local, national and international artists. We are thrilled and excited to have an artist of Fraser's talent and reputation working with us, presenting thought-provoking exhibitions throughout the year for everyone in Inverclyde and beyond.

Fraser also studied at the Royal College of Art and since 1983, has developed an interdisciplinary art practice and exhibited internationally. His practice is rooted in drawing and strategies manifest in a range of singular or collaborative projects, including large-scale sculptural installations, set design, print media, film and painting. As an educator he has lectured at leading fine art and design institutions, and from 2001 until 2017 was a Visiting Artist and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Fiber and Material Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. In 2017 he was awarded an Honorary Professorship from Glasgow School of Art, University of Glasgow and co-founded The Textile Collective.

Alastair Houston Sat 1 Feb – Sat 29 Feb

Alastair David Houston was born in 1965 and brought up on the west coast of Scotland. Coming from an enthusiastic sailing family, he spent his early years on the waters, leading to a move to the professional sailor’s world of Palma, Mallorca, in the late 1980s.

Working on yachts was second nature, and with a chance meeting with art and yacht enthusiasts proposing the question ‘can you paint my boat?’ came the answer ‘yes and I can also paint a picture of it!’.

Interested in art from a young age, Alastair has always loved drawing and painting. This was a first commission and so began his career as an artist.

Award-winning pianist and saxophonist Euan Stevenson and Konrad Wiszniewski give fascinating insights into classical music’s relationship with jazz.

In an informal presentation, these two leading jazz musicians demonstrate Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Duke Ellington’s shared love, show why Miles Davis and Erik Satie were kindred spirits and play widely acclaimed original compositions.

We have a free Access Requirement Register (ARR) in order to improve our service to you.

The information you provide for the Register will be stored on file to help find the best available seats for you quickly and easily.

You can join the Access Requirement Register by filling in a form which is available from the Box Office or on our website.

Please note free Personal Assistant (essential carer) tickets will only be available to those on the Access Requirement Register, although it is not a requirement for you to join the Access Requirement Register in order to book tickets.

At certain performances, we offer one free ticket with every 10 purchased.

We charge a £2.20 online transaction fee which goes towards our processing costs.

ACCESS How to get here

Beacon Arts Centre is situated on Custom House Quay, opposite the Custom House, and is within easy reach of Greenock town centre and close to all public transport links.

By road

Beacon Arts Centre is off the A8 behind Greenock Police Station. Turn into Brymner Street at the Police Station and then right into Custom House Place. We have free customer parking to the rear of the building and to the left of the building in front of the Custom House.

By train

Greenock Central railway station is 500 metres away up a slight gradient, with a frequent service on the Glasgow Central/ Gourock line. Journey times from Glasgow are approximately 30 or 40 minutes and services run until 11pm (an hour earlier on Sundays). Check scotrail.co.uk for up-to-date timetables.
