WELCOME TO THE BEACON

Here at the Beacon we are renowned for the breadth and depth of our events programme, and this Autumn we continue to celebrate our 10th birthday with an eclectic and entertaining mix of performances, lighting up lives in Inverclyde.

But even when there aren’t any performances there’s still plenty going on. You can Take Part in a whole range of activities, including Beacon Youth Theatre and Platinum Dance classes, or take a look at the art exhibitions in the light-filled upstairs Gallery. And there’s always the ever-changing view across the Clyde to admire while enjoying something delicious in the Café & Bar.

Live comedy is a strong presence at the Beacon, and this Season is no different, with Milton Jones, Gary Faulds, Craig Hill, Nina Conti, A Scottish Comedy Collective, The Dolls and the stars of Still Game all queuing up to tickle your ribs.

In a more serious vein, toxic masculinity gets the once-over in the acclaimed Tron Theatre/National Theatre of Scotland production of Moorcroft, while Man Shed explores the challenges of later life, and 1990s Glasgow gang culture is put under the microscope in When We Were Young. The 1900 Flannan Isles lighthouse mystery is given a contemporary setting in Keepers of the Light, and the Beacon is also host to its very own murder mystery – but you’ll have your dinner served with that!

Music comes in the form of tributes to ABBA, Country and Western, Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and Elvis, an evening of James Bond theme tunes, live sets from Steve Grozier, Jill Jackson, and Jo Beth Young and Serious Child, spine-tingling concerts from The Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland and Dunedin Consort, and lunchtime recitals from students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. And don’t forget that the Studio makes the ideal intimate setting for Beacon Jazz Club.

We’ve not forgotten our younger theatregoers either! Families can learn about Ultimate Dinosaurs with Dr Ben Garrod, join Timothy Pope in Shark in the Park, tag along with Misty on a Magical Adventure and travel with Poppy Diddle to the Moon.

Local amateur organisations present My Fair Lady and Jack and the Beanstalk – do support these fantastic groups – while the Beacon co-produces two major new productions: Battery Park dives deep into Britpop and the crushing of working-class dreams, while Plinth reappraises the role of statues via the story of Theseus and the Minotaur.

And of course it wouldn’t be an Inverclyde Christmas without the Beacon’s fun-filled pantomime! Book now to guarantee your tickets for Beauty and the Beast, with a cast of Beacon regulars including Jane McCarry, Mark Cox, Jimmy Chisholm and Lee Samuel.

Messy-haired master of the one-liner, Milton Jones is one of this country’s most successful touring comedians. His unique style of comedy has audiences in stitches, and the laughs are just as loud as his shirts.

Dida Cordria has won many international piano competitions and is a BBC Young Musician prizewinner. She currently studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. Her programme opens with sparkling baroque music by Bach and moves on to one of Beethoven's greatest piano sonatas. It concludes with Rachmaninov's last composition for himself, his amazing 'Corelli Variations' which demonstrate all aspects of the piano from lyrical beauty to astonishing virtuosity.

Guitar music from Spain and South America has an irresistible charm and today’s music demonstrates this in spades. Ross Morris is a Cornish classical guitarist who performs as a soloist at international music festivals and concert series across the UK.

Scottish-Dutch pianist Anna Michels has performed major piano concertos with numerous Scottish and Dutch orchestras. Schumann’s effervescent 'Faschingsschwank aus Wien' is a description of an Austrian carnival. Rachmaninov’s Preludes include some of his most passionate music as well as some startling virtuosity.

Steve Grozier is one of Scotland’s finest songwriters. His ability to write literate, introspective lyrics and his emotive vocals have earned comparisons with such luminaries as Neil Young, Bob Dylan and Townes Van Zandt. His debut album, All That’s Been Lost, garnered universal praise.

Grozier has performed with some of the biggest names in Americana, folk rock and alt-country: Blitzen Trapper, Buck Meek (Big Thief) and Joe Pug.

He is a BBC featured artist at the Edinburgh Festival, Americana Music Association showcase performer and regular at Celtic Connections.

December 1900. Three keepers disappear from the Flannan Isles lighthouse, west of the Outer Hebrides. What happened to the men has never been answered and becomes the talking point for three technicians who find themselves stranded on the remote station.

Join Davie, Alec and Mac as they delve into the mystery and step into the shoes of the missing keepers. Some stones, of course, are best left unturned... Izzy Gray’s Keepers of the Light combines traditional storytelling with a contemporary staging, and an original score by Ewan Watson.

His band Battery Park, a raucous female-fronted four-piece from Greenock, are recording their debut album and preparing to tour the country supporting Oasis. But then, out of the blue, they disappear from the scene and are never heard of again. Thirty years later, a young student approaches Tommy in the bowling club bar and tries to unravel what happened to the boy wonder and his mates. Battery Park has live music from Andy McGregor, writer/director of the 5-star Spuds and Crocodile Rock. It’s a funny, earthy play about Britpop, glorious defeat and working-class dreams, packing an emotional punch that resonates long after the final note. Suitable for age 14+

The Scottish Fire Brigades Heritage Trust is proud once again to host the Band of the Royal Regiment of Scotland at our annual charity concert. The Band have been particularly busy over the past year. Playing at the late Queens funeral and at the Coronation ceremonies of King Charles in London and Edinburgh. The band who will play a wide range of music from traditional military, folk , movie themes, and much more will be accompanied by pipers from the Army School of piping in Edinburgh. This is a not to be missed evening of musical extravagansa, providing entertainment for all the family. All proceeds for the concert will go to the Soldiers Charity and the Scottish Fire Bridges Heritage Trust.

Renowned visual theatre maker Al Seed presents his latest striking work, examining the role and reappraisal of statues. At the heart of Plinth is an exploration of statues as artefacts of war, particularly the archetypal image of the ‘hero’, and within the work Seed reimagines the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.

Plinth is the latest in a series of performances Seed has created around the theme of conflict and the politics of its remembrance. This world premiere, co-produced with Vanishing Point in partnership with the Beacon and Tramway, will be full of rich imagery and astonishing movement.

Christine Tobin is one of the most distinctive voices on the UK and European jazz scene. She was awarded the BBC Jazz Award for Best Vocalist in 2008 and Jazz Vocalist of the Year at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards in 2014. Her Leonard Cohen tribute, A Thousand Kisses Deep, won a Herald Angel award at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2013. Two years later she and her musical partner, guitarist Phil Robson, moved to New York. Phil has also been a long-time member of the awardwinning jazz group Partisans. Now back living in Ireland, they recently toured Christine’s rapturously received latest album, Returning Weather, and continue to work as a duo, performing original songs and impeccable arrangements of jazz standards.

‘I prefer pastels because of a wide range of premixed colour variations and soft appearances of the finished work. My main aim is to produce a warm naturalistic effect through colour, light and tonal values. The variety of pastel colours provides me with a greater sense of creativity, while working across different genres and locations stimulates my imagination. From the Clyde coast and Hebridean islands to Paris and Venice, each location has its own unique characteristics that I aim to capture. I hope this exhibition demonstrates the flexibility of my chosen medium.’

Are you ready to step into the spotlight?

Our weekly drama classes offer an inspiring and supportive environment where young people (aged 5-18) can develop their performance skills, spark their interest in theatre and make memories that will last a lifetime!

WHAT’S IN IT FOR ME?

Our young performers have the opportunity to create vibrant new pieces of theatre, explore different approaches to storytelling, take part in festivals and unique events and have the opportunity to perform in our state-of-the-art professional theatre.

But it’s not just about what happens onstage; Youth Theatre is a fantastic way of encouraging children and young people to express themselves, work with others, build confidence and, most importantly, have fun!

In addition to regular classes, our Youth Theatre members also have the opportunity to work with visiting artists, build relationships with other drama groups and trainers, and receive exclusive offers for upcoming shows.

Our Young Company offers a more focused and intensive grounding in performance and theatre making. Our weekly classes invite participants to explore and experiment with a range of approaches, techniques and theory, while working collaboratively to create vibrant and innovative new shows which are fully staged in our theatre.

We strive for professional standards in our work, whilst also maintaining a friendly and supportive atmosphere during the rehearsal process. Furthermore, our members are invited to work on exciting new projects throughout the year with visiting professionals; in the last year alone they have had the chance to work with artists from Surge, Scottish Youth Theatre, Magic Torch Comics and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, in addition to taking part in the National Theatre Connections Festival.

HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?

We believe that every young person should have the opportunity to take part in our programmes. There are no auditions to join and you don’t need any drama experience, just an interest in theatre and lots of enthusiasm!

We understand that in these difficult times, cost can be a barrier for some young people so are delighted to be able to offer a limited number of bursary and concession places for each year (big thanks to the Bridge Awards for making this possible).

Explore the joys and therapeutic benefits of dance, music and the creative spirit!

Beacon Arts Centre is delighted to host a weekly class designed especially for people living with Parkinson’s, their families and carers. The class is accompanied by a live pianist and takes place in our tranquil gallery suite overlooking the Clyde. The session is followed by a social cafe where we all kick back and enjoy a cuppa and a blether!

This is a drop-in class and can be paid for on the day at Box Office. Advanced booking available but not required. Carers join free and our building is fully accessible.

Platinum Dance

Every Monday  10 & 11am | £5 per class

Our Platinum Dance Classes offer physical and mental health benefits to those aged 55+ while partaking in fun and accessible dance activities. Reactivate old dance skills or learn some new ones in this supportive and focused environment. This class, which focuses on technical skills and choreography, will boost self-confidence and encourage social interactions. Classes overlook a stunning view of the River Clyde.

Our 55+ Platinum Dance Class is a fun, gentle way to move the body every Monday morning. We begin class with a warmup before moving on to a series of exercises exploring contemporary dance technique, balance, mobility and strength. As the class progresses, we move on to travelling exercises focusing on creativity and self-expression. Finishing the class, we work on a section of choreography building upon this each week.

What to wear? Loose and comfortable clothing and bring a bottle of water!

Halloween Hell A Murder Mystery

Meet Gore the Ghost, Count Chickens and the Monster Mistress – half witch, half Frankenstein – and share an engaging over-dinner experience which will have you screaming with laughter.

Welcome to the ancestral home of Count Chickens, a dark, dank, insalubrious place. We trust you will have an enjoyable evening (fatalities notwithstanding). Over the course of your dinner, you are invited to interrogate each of the suspects in turn. Ask them absolutely anything you can think of to confirm (or not) your suspicions and be aware that all are under oath – only the murderer(s) will lie!

Why does the Mistress look so familiar? Are there Vampire Slayers in the house? Is Gore whiter than white? Obviously there is no shortage of murderers and monsters, but who is guilty this time? The hunt is on.

Tickets include glass of fizz on arrival, three-course dinner with tea/coffee and entertainment.

Beacon Arts Centre is situated on Custom House Quay, opposite the Custom House, and is within easy reach of Greenock town centre and close to all public transport links.

BY ROAD

Beacon Arts Centre is off the A8 behind Greenock Police Station. Turn into Brymner Street at the Police Station and then right into Custom House Place. We have free customer parking to the rear of the building and to the left of the building in front of the Custom House.

Greenock Central railway station is 500 metres away up a slight gradient, with a frequent service on the Glasgow Central/ Gourock line. Journey times from Glasgow are approximately 30 or 40 minutes and services run until 11pm (an hour earlier on Sundays). Check scotrail.co.uk for up-to-date timetables.

CONCESSIONS

Concession rates are available on many performances and apply to the following groups: Children (under 16, or over 16 in full-time education) • Young Scot cardholders and students • Senior citizens • Those in receipt of Jobseeker’s Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, and Employment and Support Allowance recipients • Disabled patrons. Carer and assisted companion tickets are also available • Members of Equity, BECTU, Scottish Society of Playwrights and Musicians’ Union. Proof of entitlement must be shown when collecting tickets.

MAIN AUDITORIUM

There are 9 wheelchair positions with companion seats in our main house: 5 in the stalls and 4 in the circle.

STUDIO THEATRE

There are 3 wheelchair positions with companion seats in our Studio.

TRANSFER SEATS

We understand that some of our customers may wish to transfer into a seat. Please advise Box Office if you will be transferring into a seat for the performance and our FOH staff will be happy to store your chair for you until required.

GALLERY SPACES AND CAFÉ

All other visitor spaces are fully accessible to all. Guide, hearing and other working dogs are welcome in all parts of the theatre. Please advise when booking if your dog will remain with you during the performance. There are separate, accessible toilet facilities located at each of the principal seating levels. Our venue has an induction loop with staff fully trained to help. Disabled parking spaces are situated to the front of our main door.

ACCESS REGISTER

Our scheme makes it easier to book the right seats for you and helps our staff deliver excellent and consistent service. It does this by only asking you once about your requirements to ensure a great visit. You can join easily by either filling out a form at Box Office or Online. Personal Assistant (essential carer) tickets are only available to those registered to the scheme; however, it is not a requirement to join the scheme in order to book tickets.

By joining the scheme and booking concession tickets you agree that the ticket(s) will only be used by a disabled person (as defined by the Equality Act 2010) and their essential carer. Customers who intentionally give false information will be removed from the register.

GROUPS

For certain performances, we offer one free ticket with every 10 purchased.

BOOKING FEE

We charge a £2.20 online and phone transaction fee which goes towards our processing costs. All booking fees are subject to change as we develop our services. We charge £1.50 for postal delivery.

FAMILY FRIENDLY

We are breast-feeding friendly. There are baby-changing facilities.

DISABILITY FRIENDLY

Beacon Arts Centre is fully accessible with wheelchair spaces, lifts and an induction loop. Our staff are fully trained to help.

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

We aim to be as green as possible and are proud to use compostable utensils and packaging in our Cafe. We recycle and are working to reduce our energy use.

WI-FI

We have FREE Wi-FI throughout the building.
