This summer, the locker room was always open in the morning, so students could come in and participate in summer weights Summer weights are when students come in over the summer, 4 days per week, to stay active and come to do workouts and lift weights.
This course had approximately 40 students, about 20 boys and 20 girls The type of activities that were carried out were a weight training program, workout, and sports practice. The coaches also added a few fun activities, such as a relay race with fireworks on the 4th of July.
According to Coach Roberts, “It is important to participate in these activities because it’s important to be healthy, improve yourself, get stronger and faster.” Also, “We don’t always have time to make adjustments and get stronger and get faster during the season,” says Coach Horr
Students found the program beneficial. “I went up to almost a hundred pounds in squats, and it helped boost my confidence,” says Freshman Lauraly Lane
Some of the best parts of weights were, “Seeing the boys get stronger and faster,” says Coach Roberts. Coach Horr says one of the best parts was, “Seeing how much weight they can lift at the beginning of the summer and how much weight they can throw around at the end of the summer. That’s really awesome.”
Coach Horr notes that “Summer weights are really the time to make adjustments, so it’s really important to show up and show out, especially if you’re looking for that varsity spot.” Coach Roberts would like to “invite more kids to come to Summer Weights because the only way to get better is working hard.”

Overall, this year has a lot of potential for this team to grow and achieve new heights.

On Monday, September 9th, the Middle School Football team won their first game of the season, against Rock Port.
The team was understandably nervous as they arrived at Rock Port. Nevertheless, our middle school Tigers took what they had and ran with it, ultimately winning 72 to 48.
8th grader Parker Pierce says, “My favorite part of the game was when the sixth graders passed the touchdown to get us the 72 points we had by the end of the game.”
7th grader Jackson Wachtel says his favorite part of the game was for sure, “getting tackled.”
Even though both the seventh and eighth graders had different takes on the game, they all had fun with their first game of the season and beat their expectations of how the game would end
Coach Roberts wants everyone to “Come out and support ” The next Middle School Football game is on Monday, September 16th at home, facing Mound City

In DeKalb, we’ve traditionally always had a Homecoming dance as a celebration of the upcoming year and the sports teams’ season beginning. Looking through our old yearbooks, we’ve had dances celebrating sports since 1956, when the dance of the year was “The Tower Dance.” In 1958, the first high school dance of the year was called “Basketball Homecoming,” which would later be known as Courtwarming, and then there was a second dance in the spring, “Track Homecoming,” celebrating the new season and the spring sports
In all of the years since Dekalb has had these high school dances, there have been King and Queen candidates, who are elected by the votes of their classmates Our King and Queen candidates are announced at the Homecoming football game, which usually has double the number of spectators as a normal Friday night game. However, our school has had issues with students staying to watch the crowning ceremony, and then leaving before the actual Homecoming dance
Each year, the attendance has been dwindling in numbers, to the point where we can’t afford a DJ to attend and play music for the occasion. It’s difficult to draw students to the dances in the first place, and it’s even harder to make them pay the class dues and entry fees that make them eligible to stay at the dance A possible solution to the attendance problem might be to have our school dances on
Saturdays rather than the Friday of the game
However, the teacher or teachers who are chosen to chaperone the dance would have to miss out on their Saturday night that they could be spending with their families, and students still might not even show up
To fix this problem, our STUCO has decided to change the look of our homecoming dance and activities this year. This year, we are going to have a Homecoming Bash rather than our traditional dance. The idea might be controversial, with opinions and thoughts like, “If people won’t show up to the dance, why would they show up to the Bash?” The reason why is because the bash is going to look a little bit different than a dance. There will be food, games, and possibly even karaoke. Student Council Advisor Ms Cagle says, “Basically, we want to introduce something new that will be enjoyable to students ” She encourages everyone to come out and enjoy the celebration.
You might enjoy our new Homecoming bash if you didn’t enjoy our previous dances This might be the forever alternative to a Homecoming dance, or maybe it will help the attendance and funding enough to start fresh with our dances. The Bash will take place on Friday, September 27th, starting after the football game till 11:30 p.m. You don’t want to miss out on the start of a new tradition that future students will look back on in yearbooks to come.

Brothers, it is time to do the Emperor's will If you remember the first Space Marine game from PlayStation, then you’ll love this game.
Space Marine 2 is a third-person shooter, hack-n-slash game created by Focus Entertainment.
This game is the latest installment of the franchise. It is available on the PS5, Xbox, and PC
I love this game for its gore and how accurate it is to the lore of Warhammer. Also, the storyline is solid and perfect for the game.
I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it to others.

On June 14, 2024, the family-favorite sequel Inside Out 2 came out, shocking critics and leaving them with only positive reviews. Inside Out 2 made $1.650 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film in 2024.
Inside Out 2 is the sequel to Inside Out, which was released on June 19, 2015, and is about an aged-up Riley going through puberty and gaining new, more complex emotions.
While at hockey camp, one of the new emotions, Anxiety, makes it her mission to make sure Riley succeeds even if it means hurting Riley a bit in the process.
Joy, Anger, Sadness, Fear, and Disgust are kicked out and have to find their way back to Riley’s headquarters and save her before it is too late.
Overall, I thought this movie was one of my favorites during the summer It shows what it is like to go through puberty and feel all these emotions at once and maybe not know how to handle them
I remember watching Inside Out when it first came out when I was younger, and I can say the sequel did not disappoint at all and kept the same standards as the first
I believe Inside Out 2 is a beautiful family movie, full of laughs and scenes that will make you cry.

Over the summer FFA was always busy. They worked on their SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) projects, attended their COLD conference, went to the State Fair, and even helped out at DeKalb’s Homecoming.
Some of the SAE projects consisted of bottle-feeding calves, growing/helping with a garden, working for a business, and even harvesting crops. “Over the summer, I visited students who were working on their ag projects. Most students had animals, some had gardens, and they just showed me their projects at their house or here at school,” says Mr. Medsker.
The FFA Officers attended the COLD conference where they participated in Ag Olympics competitions. “We made posters on what standards we should have, and some of the ones we had were
accountability and knowledge,” says Junior FFA Officer Klhoe Pflugradt. They also set goals for the upcoming year
A group of FFA students also went to the State Fair where they helped with a statewide community service project. “We listened to a few keynote speakers talk about food insecurity in the state of Missouri and brought canned food to pay for our entry fee. Then we went to a food packaging facility at the Fair,” says Junior FFA Officer Presli Punzo. They also took down veggetables they grew to be put on display and judged.
At the DeKalb Homecoming, a group of FFA students helped serve breakfast to the community to “Raise funds for trap shooting, Contest teams that make it to State, and FFA field trips,” says Junior FFA Officer Miley Phillips.

Second-year FFA students attended a fall workshop with a National FFA Officer on Tuesday, September 10, in Savannah.
The students participated in activities involving how to communicate and build teamwork skills, including one that had Sophomore Michael Pitts “crawling under a table.”
Mr.Medsker says the event is important because “you get to meet other people, learn leadership skills, and it’s good to get out of the classroom every once in a while ” Medsker adds that overall, it went pretty well and the students all enjoyed it
Sophomore Maggie Hall said they played games based on communication skills, and that they got to meet other people. Overall, she thought the event was fun. “If you don't do AG,” says Maggie, “you should 10/10 recommend!”

One book that I am currently reading and loving is One Of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus. This book is a very good murder mystery and has plenty of plot twists. While reading we are trying to figure out which one or all of the five teens purposely killed a student. It gives many perspectives and I would totally recommend it!
If you're anything like me, you need a book that is interesting and makes you want to keep reading. One book that I would recommend for that is Verity. Verity is a romance book and one of my favorites from Colleen Hoover. In this book we watch Lowen try to do her job while also trying to figure out if she is living in the same house as a murderer or not. This book does get very intense and is very hard to put down.
As the weather slowly cools and the leaves fall it's time to bring in a fall book. One of my favorite series to read during fall is any of the Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling, my favorite is Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban. In this book, we follow Harry Potter and see him take on his third year at Hogwarts while trying not to be killed! This book series also comes in movies and I would 100% recommend it.

This year, the team has improved and grown from showing up to summer weights to working hard at practice. Senior Tori Hawk thinks that “the team has improved on our bunting, which will help us win more games ”
Coach Kristian has a goal for the team to make it further into Districts at the end of the season. This can be attainable as long as the team keeps working hard. Already having multiple wins this season, it’s looking strong for the DeKalb Lady Tigers Softball team.
