Cross Country’s Helton Hits Yet Another PR
By: Katlyn Boydston
On Monday, October 21st, the DeKalb Cross Country team had a Conference meet in Maryville.
This week’s Ag Ed on the Move lesson for the third graders at the Elementary school was about Beef Cattle
Senior Ceci Sherlock took the lead in teaching this week. According to Ceci, this week’s lesson went “really well. They really liked our bingo game.”
Next week, the DeKalb FFA will go back to the elementary school to deliver a lesson on Dairy Foods.
Coach Taylor said, “It was the 275 Conference. We only had one High School runner, and that was Zylar Helton, and it went amazingly because he had a PR of 23 48 ”
“It was good, thought I was gonna puke, but I didn’t, so that’s good,” said Zylar Helton about this most recent PR
The Middle School season will be over after the Haunted Hustle on October 25th to help with the DeKalb Pride Band fundraiser, but the High School has Districts on November 1st at Missouri Western

How To: Trick-Or-Treat Properly and Safely
By: Laci Burnett
Step 1: Pick A Costume
Visit a nearby store that carries costumes, such as Walmart, Spirit Halloween, or Target, or search for them on one of the numerous online stores available. If your costume is thin or lacks sleeves, consider bringing some layers, as it is predicted to get below 40 degrees Fahrenheit on Halloween.
Talk with friends about their plans on Halloween night, and convince someone to join you or a group of friends. There are plenty of adorable group costumes available that are perfect to do with friends!
Find A Buddy or Two Step 2:
Step 3: Think Ahead
Be aware of where you go when Trick-or-Treating, stay with your group, and consider sharing your location with a parent, guardian, or trusted adult in case of emergency. Remember your warm clothes, and bring extra bags for candy!
A general rule of thumb for Halloween is only go to houses you know, or houses with their lights on. Obviously, knock on the door, and if someone doesn’t answer, try the next one. There are plenty of houses in the DeKalb and Rushville area, and make sure to stop by the Rushville Christian Church. They are having their Trunk-or-Treat with plenty of candy and games for all the cars, and free drinks and food in the basement!
Trick-orTreat Step 4:
What to Listen To What to Read
By: Ashlynn Bowen
If you are stuck on picking a good book for this chilly weather, then I recommend The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
This book is a prequel to the other three books in the Hunger Games series and was released on May 19, 2020
This specific book is set 64 years before The Hunger Games and shows what young President Snow was before his rise to evil. While Coriolanus Snow is young, he is a decent human and is chosen to help Lucy Gray attempt to survive the games. If you have never read the books, the “games” are just 24 kids killing each other, while people watch and bet on who will win
There are also movies you can watch! The first Hunger Games movie was released in 2012, and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was released on November 17, 2023 My favorite thing about this book is how well it represents the differences between people who were raised in the capital and the districts. While Lucy Gray may have come from her covey, she still represents District Twelve, and when she shows her charming personality, it helps people in the capital realize that people from the District are still humans.

This week, I want to recommend listening to Conan Gray, who I found during my seventh-grade year. I heard one of his newer songs for the first time this week: Vodka Cranberry.
Vodka Cranberry is on the album Wishbone, which came out in August of 2025. Conan Gray is on tour for this album in October 2025, with the second leg of the tour starting in February 2025
Conan Gray’s music is typically considered pop, indie, or alternative He is often compared to Cavetown, Olivia Rodrigo, Lorde, and Billie Eilish
My favorite songs from Conan are Lonely Dancers, Boys and Girls, and, of course, Vodka Cranberry I really enjoy Conan’s unique voice and song style, so I would rate his music an 8 out of 10, and I recommend his music for anyone who is looking for something new.

Lady Tigers Say Goodbye to Landmark Softball Season
By: Miley Phillips
The Dekalb Lady Tigers Softball team laid it all out on the field this weekend ending their hard fought season on Monday night.
Saturday, October 18th was the first round of Districts for this team. They won this game against Northeast Nodaway with a score of 8-5 This win moved them on to the second round The second game took place on Monday, October 20th against Stanberry They played a good game but sadly lost 3-2
Even though the team was upset about their season ending, they have a lot of things to be proud of. The Lady Tigers won the Maysville tournament, got seeded first in their District and are the 2025 conference champions! They ended their season with a record of 14-8. They had more wins this season than the softball teams have had since 2015
All the Seniors agree that it was a good season. We all grew as people and learned how to play together as a team. If we could choose any season to go out on it would be this one.
Coach Horr said, “I think despite how it ended, it was one of the most successful seasons that Dekalb has seen in a long time – not just from a wins and losses perspective – but from how each player grew over the season and how we came together”
Throughout their season, the team doesn’t just play softball, but also always have a great time together doing some of the things they do. They have an annual scavenger hunt around town, allowing them to get out in the community. And with so much rain this year, they were able to take a trip to go bowling together
Even though the actual softball season was from August to October, these ladies started putting in work in June. Throughout the summer, they had weights training and a trip to Centralia, playing eight games in two days. Even though they do a lot of tiring things, their hard work really paid off this season.
If you see one of these girls around, tell them how good they did this season Even though it seems far away, the next season will start before we know it

Football Team Prepares for Districts
By: Grayson Moore
Last week, on Friday, October 17th, the DeKalb High School Football team played their eighth season game against the Mound City Panthers and lost 56-16.
Coach Kaleb Wardlow says, “I’d say we played one of our better games of the year We’ve improved from previous weeks It’s been rough at times, but we can only get better from here and hope to win our first District game ”
During practices, the Football boys have been working on running plays in order to prepare for their game at DeKalb against East Atchison on October 24th.
Garrett Marriott says, “I feel like I did a pretty good job I got a lot of tackles and made a lot of plays”
The team has their last regular season game tonight, which is also Senior Night, at DeKalb, so make sure to come out and support them! For Districts, they play first at Stewartsville on October 31st.

What to Play
By: Bella Beems
Imagine this: You suddenly wake up and you don’t know where you are, you look around and see sticky, blood-covered walls and rusty room decor You stand up from the uncomfortable bed you were lying in, and you hear the floorboards creak
Suddenly, an ugly old hag runs in and hits you with a bat and knocks you out. You wake up back in the same bed again, in the same room.
You know now not to make a creak in the floorboards. You have to stay as quiet as possible to not alert the hag and find a way out of wherever this is.
This is basically all Granny is. In honor of the spooky season, I recommend Granny, a survival horror game where you go through the previous scenario
You adventure around a house and its secret corridors, trying to unlock the front door and escape without making a noise If you make a noise, don’t worry, just hide in time before Granny comes and gets you!
Granny is available on iOS, Android, and PC via Stream and Google Play.
What to Watch
By: Lauraly Lane
One movie I recommend is Monster House This movie revolves around three kids: D J Walters, Chowder Peterson, and Jenny Bennett, and how they go into Old Man Nebbercracker’s house. They figure out the house is haunted and are basically stuck inside the house.
The house was built for Nebbercracker’s late wife, Constance. Who fell into the basement of the house, and she is the spirit of the house. Constance had rocks thrown by kids and she hated children When Nebbercreacker found this out, he started to chase children away from the sidewalk in front of his house so the house doesn’t get scared
The kids got stuck in the basement and learned the house's backstory from when the house was built They also almost get killed in the basement I really like this movie because it is creepy, and you don’t always know why an elderly person is the way they are.
