THE BLACK AND GOLD Rushville Christian Church Hosts Annual Trunk-or-Treat

k-or-Treat

On Halloween night, October 31st, Rushville Christian Church hosted its annual Trunk-or-Treat for all ages There was a mix of spooky trunks, haunted games, face painting, and lots of yummy food

Many Rushville and DeKalb students attended, and Eighth Grader Noa Danese believes that it was “great” and “very decorated ” Plus, there was plenty of candy to go around, and everyone claimed to get a good amount

With all the fun festivities occurring, kids still missed the infamous haunted house run by Andrew Johnson Eighth Grader Keiffer Solomon said, “They had games and the usual church stuff from previous years; I feel like the worst part was that Andrew wasn’t running the haunted house ”

Even though the Halloween festivities are over, there is still plenty more to celebrate at the Rushville Christian Church, with the youth group every Sunday from 6:30 P M to 8:30 P M There will also be the annual Princess Banquet on the evening of November 22nd, so be sure to show up and show out

Dekalb Tigers Face District Wrap-Up What to Watch

For this week’s What to Watch, I recommend The Peanuts Movie. This follows the jolly adventures of Charlie Brown, his dog, and all his friends.

When a new red-haired girl shows up on his block, he is excited and sets out to impress her While Charlie Brown tries desperately for this red-haired girl to pay attention to him, his dog, Snoopy, embarks on an imaginary journey to save his love, Fifi.

This movie shows the importance of being kind and believing in yourself, no matter what, with plenty of funny commentary to go with it.

This movie is also very nostalgic for those who grew up watching Charlie Brown, and for those reasons, I rate it 4 out of 5 stars

Also, if you want to get into the Thanksgiving spirit, check out A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. This story follows the Peanuts gang as they celebrate a chaotic Thanksgiving

Whichever you choose, it’s always a good time to spend an evening with Charlie Brown and Snoopy.

On Friday, October 31st, the DeKalb Tigers Football team played their first district game and last game of the season against the Stewartsville Wildcards The final score was 48-32, the closest score of the season

Head Coach Wardlow says, “I think we probably played our most complete game of the year Had a bunch of injuries, trying to play through pain that could be injuries I would say a lot of our younger players got a lot of playing time ”

Wardlow goes on to predict that “the experience is going to be beneficial for next season, as younger players have more mental experience. We need to get in the weight room. Put some muscle on. Aside from getting hurt, we shouldn't have ever had to put some people in spots they're unfamiliar with.”

Senior Kyle Funk agrees that overall, the game was a good one for the Tigers “I feel like I played really well No one really played bad We just had a lot of unfortunate injuries ”

With injuries being the only problem Friday night, the boys did a good job wrapping up their season and tried their best to work on new things each week We are proud of all their work this season and look forward to seeing their return on the field this fall.

What to Play

If you are looking for a blast to the past or a game to remind you of your childhood, I recommend Super Mario Bros Whether you play the older 1985 version or the newer version released in 2006, you are guaranteed to have a fun time

In this game, you play as Mario or you have the options of Luigi and their friends in multiplayer mode, while traveling through complex obstacles. Your goal in Super Mario Bros is to rescue Princess Toadstool from your enemy, King Koopa, or Bowser You travel through eight worlds with a total of 32 levels before you can save Princess Toadstool

You can buy the newer version through video game retailers like GameStop, Best Buy, Walmart, or Amazon, and the older version is typically only available through Amazon or eBay. For some family or individual fun, consider playing this captivating yet challenging game

What to Read

One book I recommend is The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks This story explores several heavy themes, such as love, trials, and is considered very different from his normal romance novels

This novel follows a young widow, Julie Barenson, who finds herself in a dangerous love triangle. Through the story, Julie Barenson tries to navigate new relationships after her husband has passed away, but a dangerous sociopath is now stalking her.

If you enjoy The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks, I also recommend The Notebook and A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks

I like this book because it's a good book to read, especially if people like to read romantic books For those who don’t normally enjoy romance books, The Guardian is a thriller as well as a romance novel that might give you a different perspective on romance I rate this book 3 out of 5 stars because it talks about a lot of heavy themes, and it’s very fast-paced.

FFA Attends National Convention

Ten of the DeKalb FFA members traveled eight hours to Indianapolis last week to attend the FFA National Convention While on this trip, they toured Lincoln’s tomb, Churchill Downs, and Louisville Slugger They also attended the rodeo, the opening session of the convention, and the Expo

Touring Churchill Downs allowed the students to see where the Kentucky Derby is held every year. They got to watch a mini-movie and then got led around the facility by a staff member. At Louisville Slugger, the students got a tour of how the bats are made and then were able to take home a free mini bat.

The opening session was a great experience for the students as well. They were able to be surrounded by other FFA members of all 50 states and 2 U.S Territories. They particularly enjoyed meeting students from Puerto Rico and California.

The Expo was a large career show where students could walk around and talk to different colleges, organizations, and businesses They also had the option to spend their time in the mega store where different booths sold apparel of all sorts While walking around, they also had a piece of paper where they could get signatures from all the states that were in attendance

Overall, the convention week was a great time for all ten of these FFA members They got to spend time fully submerged into the world of agriculture and have a lot of fun

Ag Ed Teaches About Pigs and Pork

What to Listen To

This Wednesday, on November 5th, Senior Miley Phillips taught students at Rushville Elementary about agriculture and pork production.

Miley Phillips, a committed FFA member who has been a part of the agriculture community for four years, taught third graders about pork production, its process, and its importance. While she loves agriculture and FFA, she also “really enjoy[s] teaching the younger kids.” When she is teaching these children, she believes “it's great to see the excitement on their faces ”

FFA members are fortunate to be able to teach students at Rushville Elementary each Wednesday about agriculture and its importance, and the younger generations have the opportunity to learn the value of and need for agriculture.

Bad Bunny is a Puerto Rican rapper and singer most known for his global fame and singing only in Spanish

His most famous album is Un Verano Sin Ti, with a record-breaking 20 billion streams on Spotify. This album was the album of the year in 2022 according to Billboard.

I personally recommend Bad Bunny’s most recent album, Debi Tirar Mas Fotos, released on January 5, 2025.

This translates to “I should’ve taken more photos.” This is where Bad Bunny talks about how he wishes he had taken more photos of the past while he had the chance, evoking his regret and nostalgia

Debi Tirar Mas Fotos has so many good songs on, it makes you want to get up and dance while also sharing a subtle political undertone.

Cross Country Finishes Season at Districts

Middle School Basketball is Here

On Saturday, November 1st, the Cross Country team went to Missouri Western State University to compete in Districts.

Zylar Helton was the only student who went, along with the coach, Dana Taylor, and this was their first competition in cold weather. “I didn't do very good, but I didn’t really think I would be the best,” said Zylar Helton.

This finalized the end of the season for cross country, and to prepare for next season, “I need to make sure I run in the offseason, and try a little bit harder,” said Zylar Helton.

On Thursday, October 30, 2025, the Middle School Basketball teams played against Osborn/Stewartsville Unfortunately, both teams lost to the Wildcards.

The girls' teams went on to play on Tuesday and lost 16 to 15 against North Andrew.

According to Emmie Kershner, “I think we need to work on our communication and our plays.”

The boys worked extremely hard, and eighth grader Griffin Davis says, “I need to work on my shooting, and the team needs to work on plays ”

The boys also went on to play on Tuesday and Thursday against North Andrew and Union Star.

Both teams will take on West Platte at home on Monday at 5:00 p m They will then head to Plattsburg on their Tigers on Tuesday

Dekalb Gains Another Tiger!

On October 30, 2025, Dekalb gained another Tiger! Charlie Jo Horr was born at 12:26 pm via C-section, which thankfully went as planned. She weighed six pounds and thirteen ounces and was twenty inches long.

Charlie Jo is the first baby in her family of now-three “I’m still wrapping my head around the fact that I’m a mom, but so far so good,” said her mom, Middle School Science Teacher and Softball Coach Haley Horr

Her first name came from Haley’s grandpa, Charles Spencer, and her middle name, Jo, is from both Haley's and Darian’s mothers' middle names. Her initials, CJ, are in memory of her sister. Her first nickname is Chuck from her dad, Darian!

So far, Charlie has been napping, grinning, and filling up her diapers a lot Surprisingly, she has a full head of hair!

Since Charlie was born the day before Halloween, she was able to participate, dressing up as Cinderella! Welcome to the Tiger family, Charlie Jo!
