THE BLACK AND GOLD
Cheer Clinic Ignites Halftime
By: Josie Long
Last week on Friday, October 3rd, the DeKalb Tiger Cheerleaders held their annual Cheer Clinic, but a little differently this time In previous years, they had the Clinics during Basketball season; however, this year, it was during Football, which was exciting for many of the little ones who participated
The Cheerleaders held their first practice for the minis on September 28. For only practicing twice before the game, many of the girls were both excited and nervous about their performance.
Their performance was a major success. “It was chaotic and fun. Watching the kids go out on the field was exciting because you got to see the work they put in,” said Sophomore Shaylee Phillips
For the most part, I think all the cheerleaders can agree that this is one of their favorite activities to be in charge of for the cheer season

Lady Tigers 275 Conference Champs
By: Michaela Copeland
On Monday, October 6th, our Softball Lady Tigers had an exciting game at DeKalb against Platte Valley The girls had an amazing game, winning both the Varsity and Junior Varsity games, and securing their place as Conference champs
This game was also Senior Night, honoring our 5 senior girls: Riley Burdette, Grace Downing, Kenzie Pflugradt, Miley Phillips, and Ceci Sherlock. Riley, the team’s Varsity catcher, had the opportunity to pitch for the first (and last) time during the 1st inning of the J.V. game. Coach Horr adds, “What a once in a lifetime experience for everyone I’m glad she was able to experience it, but never again She pitched for three batters, got the first one out, then walked the last two ”
The game ball was awarded to Grace on Monday night, and Kenzie on Thursday night. Grace was awarded the game ball because of her leadership on the mound and positive energy in the dugout. Kenzie got the game ball on Thursday because she made some really good plays in the outfield that saved some runs, or as Grace says, ‘saved her butt ’”
Coach H. is excited for the team because “This was the first year that the team has won the Conference since 2019. Other schools in our Conference are Platte Valley, Northeast Nodaway, and Stewartsville. It’s a small Conference but that's okay. We play each team twice throughout the season, and it's a best of however-many game matchup, and it’s pretty cool that we get to participate in that.”
This year’s Softball Seniors were Coach H ’s first team since she has been a coach here “This group is the group I started with when I came here, so it’s pretty special to me to see them grow into great leaders and role models. I’m really proud of them, all of them.”

Last Friday, October 3rd. Taylor Swift released her 12th album, The LIfe of a Showgirl, which was much-anticipated by fans worldwide The album is off to a successful release with all 12 tracks topping the Apple Music and Spotify charts, as well as Billboard’s Top 100.
Taylor’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, is a lively album reflecting her triumphant state of mind Her new album is an upbeat pop and soft rock record about their (hers and Travis Kelce’s) celebrity and contentment in love.
Taylor Swift said her new album was joyful and about her offstage life and private inner world during the Eras Tour, but her new album also features darker undertones and shots at those who have wronged her.
Songs on this album are The Fate of Ophelia, Father Figure, Actually Romantic, Cancelled, Elizabeth Taylor, Eldest Daughter, Wish list, Honey, Opalite, Ruin the Friendship, and Wood. The most popular song off this album is The Fate of Ophelia.
My personal favorite off this album is Wish List because it seems like a good song and it reminds me about what the future could be like.

Every week, they present a different topic to the third graders. This week’s topic was about Missouri crops. There is a lesson and then an activity. The activity was making Missouri out of play dough
Junior, Kelsey Chatman took the lead in teaching this week. Her favorite part was “all their questions they had and their personalities - they are all different”

What to Read
By: Bella Beems Trapshoot Shoots for the Stars
By: Laci Burnett
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak is about a young girl named Liesel Meminger in nazi Germany and her journey to becoming a book thief.
This book is unique because it follows the point of view of Death during World War 2 Death tells the story of Liesel, a young girl cursed from the beginning with her communist heritage She catches Death’s attention from the moment she enters Molching, Germany, to live with her new foster family
We learn a lot about Liesel’s journey to becoming a book thief, her foster family, and meet many different people with many different lives throughout the book. I personally have not finished reading this book, but I can’t wait to do so because of how much this book captivates me.
Trapshoot members went to their meet on Saturday, October 4th, at the trapshoot range in Falls City, Nebraska. Members did exceptionally well, and according to Mr. Medsker, they “moved from fourth place to third place in the overall team standings for the year,” and continue to keep growing
Members were faced with heavy winds on Saturday, which affected their scores, but as Mr. Medsker said, “that affected all the schools.” Even though the wind was an unexpected obstacle, Medsker says, “We had five people hit 40/50.” These people include Seniors Gary Griffin, Emma Pitts, and Khloe Pflugradt, Junior Jessie Ashpaugh, and Freshman Parker Pierce.
Trapshoot will continue to shoot away and get better as the year continues, and it is exciting to see their abilities. Come and support our Trapshoot team at their next meet on Saturday, November 1st.

Breast Cancer Awareness
Photo Credit: Knoxville Institute of Dermatology
One of the most common cancers in women is Breast Cancer. One out of eight women has, or has had, breast cancer. Being 13% of all US citizens, it is one of the fastest-growing cancers in America.
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer killing women around the world Many women in this area have had Breast Cancer, and some are still fighting it For almost four decades, October has been Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and as a result, the world wears pink in October. Unlike other months of awareness, people are more aware of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Many sports do pinkouts to spread awareness for breast cancer, and professional sports help raise funds for breast cancer as well. Our high school sports, like Softball and Football, also do pinkout in October. Coach Horr says, “I think it helps spread awareness, too, being a female sport and almost everyone knows someone who has had it”
But Breast Cancer isn’t just found in women. Men can also have Breast Cancer, since both men and women have breast tissue, but it is not very common. It grows slowly throughout the body and is one of the most common cancers around the world.
October is not only a month to bring awareness to those with Breast Cancer, but to acknowledge those who have previously fought it and those we have lost. So this October, wear your pink, bring awareness, and remember to do your monthly self-exams.
