It was a pleasure to work with the artist Martin Cleis, who came from Basel / Switzerland to participate in the resident editions.
Martin chose to leave the format of single print edition and chose to do a folio of a number of images from overseas and others he took in Brooklyn during the month that he stayed here.

In fall of 1974, when I first came to «the city that never sleeps» as a young artist, my contacts led me then to artists in the «Westbeth Artist Community» in southern Manhattan. «You are a printmaker», they told me and arranged a collaboration with the Japanese artist Hiromitsu Morimoto, an accomplished lithographer who helped me print my conceptual lithograph series «Crossbreed» in the print workshop of the artist community.
Also in fall, but 36 years later, I‘m back in a printing workshop in New York, this time in Brooklyn: Here, however, it‘s not an old classic litho press, but state-of-the-art digital printing machines for large-format plots. Brendan Carney, whom I met in Basel in 2005 as an artist in residence, founded the company in 2008. I was delighted when he invited me to spend a month here to produce a work in his workshop.
What came out of it, is now documented in this brochure.

Als ich im Herbst 1974 zum ersten Mal als junger Künstler in «die Stadt, die nie schläft» kam, führten mich meine Kontakte zu Künstlern der «Westbeth Artist Community» im Süden Manhattans. «You are a printmaker», sagte man mir und vermittelte mir eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem japanischen Künstler Hiromitsu Morimoto, der als versierter Lithograph in der dortigen Druckwerkstatt meine Serie «Crossbreed» drucken half.
Ebenfalls im Herbst, aber 36 Jahre später stehe ich wieder in einer Druckwerkstatt in New York, diesmal in Brooklyn: Hier aber steht nicht eine alte klassische Lithopresse, sondern modernste Digitaldruckmaschinen für grossformatige Plots. Brendan Carney, den ich in Basel 2005 als «artist in residence» kennen gelernt hatte, hat die Firma 2008 gegründet. Seine Einladung, einen Monat hier zu verbringen, um eine Arbeit in seiner Werkstatt zu produzieren, hat mich riesig gefreut.
Was dabei herauskam, ist nun in dieser Broschüre dokumentiert.

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES
Martin Cleis, born in Basel on April 5,1946, lives and works in Weil am Rhein / Germany since 2016.
Artistic-pedagogical training at the Kunstgewerbeschule Basel, graduated with a diploma as an art teacher, taught for a few years until he finally turned to art as a freelancer in 1973.
Numerous stays abroad as artist in residence or in conjunction with exhibitions in galleries, art institutes and museums (including Spain, Portugal, Germany, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Japan, Taiwan), works in public and private collections in Switzerland and abroad.
