Patient Experience

Addressing the psychological, physical, social and spiritual needs of our patients during treatment and beyond through meaningful interactions is integrated into the fabric of Baptist Health. Philanthropy has been beneficial in enhancing the patient experience by supporting initiatives within our organization to allow our patients to feel heard, understood and cared for.

Providing take-home HALO® SleepSlacks to babies born at Baptist Health Baptist Hospital, Baptist Health Homestead Hospital and Baptist Health South Miami Hospital is an important step to ensure that families avoid a preventable tragedy. The accidental suffocation and strangulation of infants can be largely attributed to sleep environment risks associated with loose bedding and blankets. A sleep sack provides parents a safer and more effective way to swaddle their newborn. All three hospitals model safe infant sleep practices and advocate for providing safe sleep education to the families. Upon discharge, with the help of philanthropy, all parents are given a brand-new HALO SleepSack.

Studies show that babies fed human milk have better outcomes and less risk of infection, including lower rates of necrotizing enterocolitis, a life-threatening intestinal disorder that affects primarily premature infants. At Baptist Health South Miami Hospital, philanthropy has helped launch a donor breast milk program to ensure that babies who need human milk can get it. In 2022, the hospital fed more than 7,760 ounces in donor milk to newborns in the neonatal intensive care unit, thanks to philanthropic support.

Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute offers a Patient Navigation Program to ensure that patients don’t have to face the challenges of a cancer diagnosis alone. Made possible through the generosity of our donors, the patient navigation team is there for patients every step of the way — whether they have questions about their diagnosis, concerns about treatment or need recommendations for support programs. Each patient is paired with a nurse navigator, who serves as an advocate to see that patients receive support and a treatment plan that best fits their needs. In 2022, more than 8,700 patients were impacted by the program.
