100-vuotiaalla Suomella on roska silmässä. Se on rakentanut myy7 tin yhden kulttuurin suomalaisuudesta väkivaltaisen ulossulkemisen kautta; kieltämällä saamelais- ja romaniväestöiltä yhtäläiset oikeudet ja pakottamalla heidät sulautumaan valkoiseen valtaväestöön. Myytti on rakennettu systemaattisesti ja istutettu syvälle suomalaisiin valtarakenteisiin kuten eri instituutioihin ja mediaan, eikä vähiten taiteessa ja kulttuurissa. Se elää rakenteiden sisällä ja muuttuu ajan myötä näkymättömäksi, valkoisuuden normiksi. Samaan myyttiin nojaa nykypäivän rasismi, jossa mustia ja ruskeita suomalaisia vähätellään ja uhkaillaan julkisessa tilassa tai hiljennetään mediatilassa. Ulossulkemiselle perustuu myös rakenteellinen rasismi, jossa ihonvärin tai nimen perusteella evätään pääsy instituutioihin ja työpaikkoihin, tai jossa tietyiltä ihmisryhmiltä ja kansalaisuuksilta viedään perustuslailliset ihmisoikeudet. Täällä on iät ja ajat asunut ”eri sukuista ja eri kielistä kansaa”** ja tulee vastakin asumaan. Voidaksemme

A 100-year-old Finland seems to have something of a blind spot. It has built a myth of a monoculture by violently pushing out others; by denying equal rights for Sami and Roma groups and forcing them to blend into the white majority. The myth has been constructed in a systematic fashion and has been deeply embedded in Finnish power structures such as different state institutions and media, not least in arts and culture. It lives inside these systems and has morphed with time into an invisible, white norm. Racism, as it

exists today, also cohabits these spaces. Black and brown Finns are dismissed and threatened in public spaces and silenced in the media landscape. This exclusion is also in the root of structural racism, in which a person is denied entry into certain institutions or jobs based on the colour of their skin or their name, or certain groups of people and nationalities have their constitutional human rights taken away from them. This country has always been, and will continue to be, inhabited by “folks of different inheritance and languages”**. In order to live together and to look brightly towards the future, the myth of Finnish monoculture must be dismantled.

This year, Baltic Circle is hosting a platform for discussions on the rights and self-governance of indigenous peoples; on cultural genocide; on rights to land and water; on climate change and solutions to it; on the revival of ecosystems and of people; and on the possibility of changing a nation. The program of works and encounters curated by Pauliina Feodoroff and titled First Nations invites the audience to engage in a sensitive and sore topic – Finnish colonialism.

The invited festival artists make sharp observations about the world (and possible worlds), with their senses soft. They take us to the birthplaces of the self (Pauliina Feodoroff, Maryan Abdulkarim, S.Nousiainen), to hushed cruelties (Michiel Brouwer and Anders Sunna), and to the fenced border regions of Europe (Rima Najdi).

They crush our hearts and fill them with joy (Motus). They prepare a voyage for us to the postmortal

Ensimmäiset kansat -ohjelmakokonaisuus kutsuu kipeän aiheen – suomalaisen kolonialismin – äärelle.

Festivaalin taiteilijat tekevät tarkkoja havaintoja maailmasta (ja mahdollisista maailmoista), herkin aistein. He vievät meidät minuuden syntysijoille (Pauliina Feodoroff, Maryan Abdulkarim, S. Nousiainen), vaiettuihin julmuuksiin (Michiel Brouwer & Anders

Sunna) ja aidatun Euroopan rajavyöhykkeille (Rima Najdi). He sekä murskaavat sydämemme että täyttävät ne riemulla (Motus). He val- 1 0 mistavat meille matkan kuolemanjälkeiseen tietoisuuteen (Post-MJ Era Institute Of Consciousness). He tekevät nykyhetken näkyväksi nautinnolla (Last Yearz Interesting Negro / Jamila Johnson-Small) ja kutsuvat antautumaan aistimiselle ja tuntemiselle (Todellisuuden Tutkimuskeskus). Illan päätteeksi Cirkon ja Baltic Circlen yhteinen festivaaliklubi kokoaa yleisön jakamaan kokemuksia, viihtymään ja juhlimaan konserttien, live-esitysten ja DJ-settien voimauttamina. They make the now visible through pleasure (Last Yearz Interesting Negro / Jamila Johnson-Small) and invite us to surrender ourselves to sensing and feeling. A joint club night hosted by Cirko and Baltic Circle wraps up the evening by inviting festivalgoers to share their experiences and to celebrate together, empowered by live music, performance acts and DJ sets. Also coming up: an epic surprise concert.

Rankaisemiseen perustuva oikeuskäsite näkee rangaistuksen – suhteutettuna tekoon – parhaaksi vasteeksi rikokseen. Kun lakia rikotaan, oikeudenmukaisuus toteutuu, kun teosta maksetaan. Toisin kuin koston käsite, rangaistus kohdistuu vain väärintekoon, sillä on luontevat rajat, se ei ole henkilökohtainen, ei sisäl­ lä nautintoa toisen kärsimyksestä, sekä seuraa prosessioikeudellisia normeja.

Oikeudenmukaisen tilanteen palauttamiseen tähtäävä oikeusmenettely puolestaan keskittyy uhrin ja rikoksentekijän sekä myös tapaukseen liittyvän yhteisön tarpeisiin, sen sijaan että päätavoitteena olisi syyllisten rankaiseminen tai abstraktien lakiperiaatteiden toteutuminen. Uhreilla on prosessissa aktiivinen rooli ja syyllisiä kannustetaan ottamaan vastuu teoistaan, "korvaamaan aiheutet­ tu vahinko – pyytämällä anteeksi, palauttamalla varastetut rahat, tai osallistu­ malla yhdyskuntapalveluun".

W H AT K I N D O F J U S T I C E ?

Retributive justice is a theory of justice that considers punishment, if proportionate, to be the best response to crime. When an offender breaks the law, justice requires that they forfeit something in return. In contrast to revenge, this type of retribution is only directed at wrongs, has inherent limits, is not personal, involves no pleasure at the suffering of others, and employs procedural standards.

Restorative justice is an approach to justice that focuses on the needs of the victims and the offenders, as well as the involved community, instead of satisfying abstract legal principles or punishing the offender. Victims take an active role in the process, while offenders are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions, "to repair the harm they've done — by apologizing, returning stolen money, or community service”.

Millä tavoin (alkuperäiskansa­)artivismin toimintatapojen ääneenartikulointi ja yhdessäpamfletointi vahvistaa (luonto­)oikeuksien toteutumista. Voisiko olla toisin. Voisiko olla. Voisinko olla.

Näistä tarpeista koostuu Pauliina Feodoroffin kuratoima Ensimmäiset kansat ­teoskokonaisuus, johon kuuluu Maryan Abdulkarimin ja S. Nousiaisen kanssa suunniteltu ja ohjattu A u t o n o m i a n a i k a , kaksipäiväinen sijdsååbbar ­kyläkokous, Anders Sunnan ja Michiel Brouwerin Maadtoe ­näyttely sekä perjantai­illan klubi ja sunnuntainen elokuvanäytös.

And how to repair the wrongdoings. Can we take steps back with lands and waters.

Can we, even in art, ever model the international agreements that have for the past century defined the borders of nations, in relation to other nations, to shed light on the circumstances that enabled these agreements to be written, and to reconsider our

ways of organising, committing and acting in a context that is wider than an individual.

And to consider how the nation of genocidaires and its objects could bare to withstand the traumatised co-existence. Let the ones speak for themselves that were pushed aside.

How the presence and expertise of artworks, artistic actions and communities can strengthen and develop the recovery, revival and rebirth of (Indigenous Peoples´) languages, places and local ecosystems connected to the communities of the languages.

In which ways do (indigenous) artivist actions articulate and co-pamphletise the actualisation of (environmental) rights. Could it be another way to be. Could it be. Could I be.

These needs are in the core of the program of works and encounters titled First Nations, curated by Pauliina Feodoroff. The works include The Time of Autonomy created together with Maryan Abdulkarim and S.Nousiainen, a two-day Sijdsååbbar village council meeting, the Maadtoe exhibition by Anders Sunna and Michiel Brouwer, as well as a club night and a cinema.

Anders Sunna ja Michiel Brouwer 2 5 herättävät kysymyksiä Ruotsin hallituksen harjoittamasta saamelaispolitiikasta; rakenteellisesta rasismista ja hyväksikäytöstä. Näyttely tasapainottelee nykymaalauksen ja dokumentaarisen valokuvan sekä tunteiden ja kylmän byrokratian välillä.

Anders Sunnan maalaukset ovat henkilökohtaisia, tuskallisia kuvauksia saamelaisten sortamisesta ja pakkosiirroista, jotka ovat jatkuneet Tornionjokilaaksossa jo neljä vuosikymmentä.

Ammentamalla kuvastoa oman sukunsa historiasta Sunna haastaa nykyhetken valtaapitäviä alueella.

Michiel Brouwerin valokuvat toimivat Sunnan maalausten vastavoimana sekä niitä täydentäen. Brouwerin kliiniset kuvat ovat todisteita Ruotsin valtion harjoittamista julmuuksista; siitä, kuinka saamelaisia on käytetty rotubiologisten kokeilujen välineinä. Kokonaisuutta täydentävät Brouwerin maisemavalokuvat ja Sunnan suvun kamppailua kuvittavat potretit.

Anders Sunna and Michiel Brouwer raise questions about Swedish Sámi policy, racism and exploitation operated by the Swedish government. The exhibition balances between contemporary painting and documentary photography, between human emotions and cold bureaucracy.

Anders Sunna's paintings tell a deeply personal and painful history about the forced relocations and oppression of the Sámi people that have continued in Tornedalen for over 40 years. By expressing his family history, Sunna challenges those in power in the Tornedalen county today.

In contrast, and in addition to this, Michiel Brouwer's clinical photographs present powerful evidence of the cruelties the Swedish government is capable of. Documentary images proving how Sámi people were used as tools in eugenic practices are shown alongside Brouwer’s landscape photography and portraits expressing the Sunna family’s struggle.

A N D E R S S U N N A (Jokkmokk) grew

(Gothenburg) studied documentary photography at St. Joost Art Academy in Breda, the Netherlands.

After graduation his work has mainly focused on investigating the colonized parts of Northern Europe.

Together with Anders Sunna, he has been working on the Project Maadtoe since 2012. Brouwer has published a photography book about the influence of Swedish race biology, that was awarded at the European Design Awards in 2013.

up in a reindeer herding Sámi family in Kieksiäisvaara. He studied Fine Arts at Konstfack College of Arts, and his work has been exhibited all around Sweden, Norway and Finland as well as in Berlin and Paris.

In his art, Sunna explores the history of his family and the Sámi community; the relocations and colonialism operated by the Swedish government. Sunna’s work creates a platform for political commentary and an outlet for feelings. It encourages other Sámi people to stand up for their identity with pride.

The age-old village council structure of the Skolt Sámi people summoned all villagers together when important decisions were to be made. The decisions were reached by consensus, with breaks in between for eating, drinking and rest, to ensure that everyone was safe and sound and had the sufficient information at hand to guide the decision making.

Think Much. Cry Much. kutsuu yleisön tarkastelemaan rajoja rakennelmina sekä niihin liittyvää vastuuta, joka koskettaa meistä jokaista.

Osallistujien kuunnellessa teoksen äänimaisemaa ja reagoidessa kuulemiinsa ehdotuksiin, syntyy koreografia ihmisten muuttoliikkeestä; koreografia kehon kyvystä ylittää rajoja, erityisesti EU:n aitaamia.

Rima Najdi matkusti Euroopan raja-alueilla tutkimassa rajojen ylityksiin liittyviä käytäntöjä ja niiden vaikutuksia kehoon. Hän tapasi ihmisiä, jotka rakentavat, vartioivat, aitaavat, ylittävät, neuvottelevat ja haastavat rajoja.

R I M A N A J D I is a Berlin-based performance artist. Her work occupies and (re)negotiates in-between spaces. She grapples with the ways in which identity is constructed and perceived, focusing on the lived experience of the body. She is interested in the vulnerability of the body in relation to the politicized tropes of gender, safety, mobility and representation.

In action or as artefact, her art questions stereotypes, the failure of language and both real and imagined borders.

Think Much. Cry Much. invites us to consider borders as a construct and to understand how we all are responsible for borders.

As the participants listen and respond to voices, sounds and instructions playing on headphones, a choreography of a migration arises – a choreography about the capacity of the body to overcome borders, especially those enclosing the EU. In order to research border rituals, Rima Najdi travelled around Europe and met with people building, guarding, fencing, crossing, challenging and negotiating borders. Out of those encounters and countless interviews, she created a radio drama that positions our bodies amidst borderlands.

AFTERLIFE is a simulation of Michael Jackson’s afterlife in the era of major pop deaths; a daring and hallucinatory get-together, creating a space for a joint voyage into the post-mortem consciousness of Jackson.

AFTERLIFE is a cut in the multiverse. It offers a one-time chance to step into a parallel spacetime and to meet Jackson’s spirit eye to eye.

AFTERLIFE reaches into the other side so we would momentarily feel what it’s like to be inside the head of a controversial pop star and just how beautiful it is to be free of selfhood.

is a performance collective and a research body run by individuals who grew up within the pop culture of the 80’s and 90’s. The mission behind the Institute is to articulate the influences of the spectacle through the mythical terrain created by Michael Jackson.

The Institute’s previous work includes an exploration of Jackson’s life work and superstardom called Neverland (URB 15), as well as Wake (Baltic Circle 2015), a club-meets-funeral mirroring the effects of Jackson’s passing on humanity. AFTERLIFE is the third and final part of the Post-MJ trilogy.

MDLSX is an explosive sound device, a lysergic and solitary hymn to the freedom of becoming, to gender b(l)ending, to a being that cannot be contained within the borders of the body, skin color, sexual organs, or boundaries of national identity.

It is a road trip of the exceptional performer Silvia Calderoni who – after 10 years with Motus – experiments a DJ/VJ set-like format, in order to start an exploration around borders.

By blurring fiction and reality MDLSX weaves together a kaleidoscopic queer universe. Autobiographical bits and literary evocations come together in a tour de force that exists on the edges; visible and invisible, physical and emotional, splendid and monstrous.

The workshop is aimed at professionals and students of theatre and performance.

It will be through this transformation process, through the work that we will do together in the rehearsal room, that the elements of this new identity will be engaged by steps and degrees; where the appearing and disappearing of gestures and objects will create mirages and transitory illusions.

This is the objective! To find the limit, the border, the critical point where it is possible to glimpse the transformation.

We will spend a lot of time on that borderline asking ourselves why as we cross it. Like at the border between two states.

From geopolitics to biopolitics.

We will always work in a collaborative way, to build together a forever becoming community, where there won't be any clear and easily recognizable identities but only moving entities.

on vuonna 2001 perustettu esitystaiteellisten seikkailijoiden kollektiivi, jonka pyrkimyksenä on havainnoida, kyseenalaistaa ja uudistaa todellisuutta tekemällä esityksiä. Suurin osa ryhmän esityksistä tapahtuu perinteisten esitystilojen ulkopuolella: kadulla, metsässä, gallerioissa, festivaaleilla, työpaikoilla ja ihmisten kodeissa.

Sleeping Beauty on osallistava 6 esitys, joka lähestyy seksuaa- 4 lisuutta valta- ja roolileikkien keinoin. Esityksessä on mahdollisuus toteuttaa fantasioita “nukkuvan” ihmisen kanssa. Osallistuja voi itse valita, haluaako olla nukkuja vai vierailija, ja tuoda mukanaan haluamansa asusteen ja rekvisiitan.

Esiintyjähahmot ovat tavattavissa festivaaliklubilla, jossa heidän kanssaan voi neuvotella fantasioista ja mahdollisuuksista toteuttaa niitä kahden kesken. Yhteisymmärryksen synnyttyä osallistuja ostaa lipun esitykseen ja siirtyy intiimiin, rauhalliseen tilaan, jossa kohtaaminen tapahtuu.

Sleeping Beauty antaa tilaa henkilökohtaisille fantasioille, kosketuksen kautta kommunikoimiselle, aistimiselle ja tuntemiselle. Se kutsuu osallistujan astumaan esityksen todellisuuteen, jossa valta ja antautuminen, luottamus ja suostumus, uteliaisuus ja arkuus, halut ja pelot, näkyvillä oleminen ja ihmisen kauneus kohtaavat. Esitys on queer-orientoitunut ja toivottaa tervetulleeksi kaikenlaiset kehot, sukupuolet ja seksuaaliset suuntautumiset.

Sleeping Beauty on osa TO D E L L I S U U D E N T U T K I M U S K E S K U K S E N Seksuaalisuuden laboratoriota (SexLab, 2016–2017). SexLab tutkii seksuaalisuutta; sen ilmenemismuotoja kulttuurissa, sen moninaisuutta ja mahdollisuuksia, sen rajoja ja tabuja – ja tietenkin seksuaalisuutta esityksessä.

REALITY RE SEARCH C E N T E R , founded in 2001, is a collective of artists engaged in performative adventures. Their shared aspiration is to observe, question, and renew reality by creating performances. Most of their performances take place outside of traditional art spaces: in the woods, in offices, on the street, in boxing rings, in virtual reality, in parliament, or in homes.

Sleeping Beauty is a participatory performance that approaches sexuality through power and role play. The performance offers an opportunity to carry out fantasies with a “sleeping” person.

The participant can choose to be either the sleeper or the visitor, and bring along gears, accessories or props to one’s liking.

The performers will be present at the festival club where audience members can negotiate with them about their fantasies and the possibility of making them happen. When mutual understanding is met, the participant can purchase a ticket for the show and move into an intimate, peaceful space for the encounter.

Sleeping Beauty gives room to personal fantasies, sensations and feelings, and communication through touch. It invites the participant to step into the reality of the performance where power and surrender, trust and consent, curiosity and timidity, desires and fears, being seen and experiencing human beauty meet. The performance is queer-oriented and it welcomes all kinds of bodies, genders and sexual orientations.

Sleeping Beauty is part of the SexLab (2016–2017) initiative run by the performance collective R E A L I T Y R E S E A R C H C E N T E R . The SexLab explores sexuality; its cultural manifestations, its diversity and possibilities, its limits and taboos – and, of course, sexuality in the performative context.

and electronic instruments. Their creative use of drum sets, loopers, synths, samplers, drum machines and guitars invokes a primitive, energetic spirit that makes people dance.

LAURA MURTOMAA Mr. Playbackboy: Poliittinen puhe nro 1.

Silvia Calderoni on esiintyvä taiteilija ja DJ, jonka ovat muovanneet taide- ja teatterimaailman underground-virtaukset. Calderonin DJ-keikoilla taiteilijan keho ja musiikki sulautuvat yhdeksi energiapurkaukseksi – ennakoimattomaksi yhdistelmäksi elektropunkia, kasaria, new wavea ja trashia.

Poliittinen puhe tässä ajassa, paikassa, tahdinosilla ja tahdittomasti ääniä lainaten; drag-esitys, jonka tekemiseen osallistuvat myös tasavallan presidentti, pääskynen sekä monet muut. Laura Murtomaa on esitystaiteilija ja muusikko, jota kiinnostaa rajat, niiden liikkeet sekä vapaus, sillä ”Kukaan ei ole vapaa ennen kuin kaikki ovat vapaita.”

Silvia Calderoni is a performer and DJ formed by artistic and theatrical underground currents.

Her DJ set is a performance in which the artist's body and music blend into a single explosion of energy – an unpredictable mash-up mixing electronics, electropunk, 80's, new wave and trash.

Mr. Playbackboy holds a political speech set in this time, in these places, through these rhythms. A drag show shamelessly borrowing sounds from other beings such as the President and a sparrow.

Laura Murtomaa is a performance artist and musician whose interests include (shifting) borders and freedom because “Nobody's free until everyone's free”.
