UK suppliers of Particle Characterisation Analysers

In this issue of Industrial Process News, we are pleased to feature Meritics Ltd as our Particle Characterisation and Material Analysis Company of the Month

Formed in 2003 by Brian and Sandra Miller, originally Meritics Ltd was set up to solely distribute Beckman Coulter products, however, the company soon added complement analysers from other manufactures to create a one-stop shop for particle characterisation.

Today, Meritics Ltd represents a number of world leading manufacturers of particle characterisation instrumentation and is ideally placed to offer an independent view of the most suitable techniques to solve particle characterisation needs.

“Meritics supplies a broad range of industries with particle characterisation instrumentation along with assistance with method development, proof of concept and SOP implementation which is often required. These analysers are also regularly maintained and serviced by our factorytrained engineers. Meritics also has a comprehensive inhouse contract sample analysis laboratory and instrument hire facilities,” stated Steven Miller, Managing Director.

Recently, Meritics has successfully launched its new website design of which you can now view and access all 13 of Meritics amazing manufacturers on one platform. Through the easy-to-navigate drop down menu, you can also effortlessly access Meritics’ full product range that includes the two Beckman Coulter products: Beckman Coulter LS 13 320 XR Particle Size Analyser & Beckman Coulter Multisizer 4e Particle Size and Count Analyser.

In today’s fast-paced world, precision and reliability in particle analysis are critical for industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to food production. The LS 13 320 XR Particle Size Analyser is a groundbreaking tool that promises unparalleled accuracy, efficiency, and versatility. Whether you’re working with powders, emulsions, or suspensions, the LS 13 320 XR ensures high-resolution data that empowers you to optimise processes, improve product quality, and minimise waste. At the heart of this cutting-edge device is its state-of-the-art laser diffraction technology, capable of measuring particles across an

impressive range – from 10 nanometres to 3.5 millimetres. However, what truly sets the LS 13 320 XR apart is its multi-modal capability, powered by proprietary PIDS (Polarization Intensity Differential Scattering) technology. It accurately distinguishes complex particle distributions, making it perfect for industries like pharmaceuticals, where even minor variations can affect drug efficacy.

Whether you’re working in pharmaceuticals, food production, or biomedical research, accurate particle counting can make all the difference. With the Beckman Coulter Multisizer 4e Particle Size and Count Analyser you get a tool that employs Coulter Principle technology, providing precise particle size distribution across a wide range (from 0.2µm to 1,600µm). Whether you’re dealing with tiny nanoparticles or larger cells, the Multisizer 4e can count and size them with pinpoint accuracy, making it the ultimate tool for laboratories demanding exact measurements. As well as offering a level of automation that saves time and reduces human error, it is its adaptability that truly sets it apart. This system is ideal for diverse applications and doesn’t ‘just count’ – it gives a

full view of a sample’s composition by providing particle volume distribution, meaning you can confidently track changes and variations with ease.

The bottom line is, for laboratories looking to stay ahead of the curve in particle analysis, both these products offer unmatched levels of precision and flexibility you can trust everytime.

To ensure it stays ahead of technological advancements in particle analysis, Meritics choose its sales partners wisely and is often sought-out by companies wanting to develop their products in the UK.

“We attend many exhibitions and conferences across the world (such as Pittcon in the USA and ChinaLab in China) to look for innovative products and to keep up with a changing market.

Often, we work with companies which have a product or formulation development problems. Our understanding and knowledge of how a particle formulation behaves and grows or degrades is key to helping reduce waste, chemical uses and energy consumption. We also continue to service and repair older equipment well

past its official obsolesce date, which is usually common within these industries that adopt a ‘buy a new one’ mentality,” said Steven.

One thing that Meritics pride itself on is its ability to tailor solutions to different industrial processes. “We listen to our customers’ needs and are trained by manufacturers so we know which instruments work best for which

applications. Don’t forget we have over 100 years combined experience! We also remain active in attending specific interest groups and committees to keep abreast of what our customers demand,” added Steven.

To finish, we asked Steven what emerging trends in industrial processes is the company preparing for. He answered, “The growth of the electric vehicle industry – battery manufacture in particular. Additive manufacturing and its use in 3D printing along with the new materials used to sprint (metals, plastics, ceramics) are key markets we are focusing on. We have, however, just welcomed two new employees: James Gregg (service) and Darren Bunker (sales support) and a new instrument – Bettersize BeScan (formulation stability analyser). With these new additions to the team we will continue to seek out new and innovate products whilst growing our customer relationships into long term collaborations.”

A small investment in lubrication can make a significant difference

We understand how important it is that your machines run smoothly, and maintenance tasks kept to a minimum, which is why as specialists in lubrication, we also understand how lubricants can improve the effectiveness of components and the efficiency of machinery. But all too often this valuable resource is forgotten.

In our highly engineered world, lubrication is essential, and can significantly extend the lifespan of machinery and equipment, increase reliability, reduce TCO, and support best practice in audits and compliance.

A recent example of where a proactive approach to lubrication has been employed was at a new state of the art flourmill in the UK. The flourmill recently made a significant investment in new milling technology to continue their progression and commitment to sustainability. With this investment came a responsibility to ensure lubrication was managed expertly by utilising technologically advanced, food safe lubricants whilst maintaining full compliance, and set the standard for best practice in lubrication management. Driven by Buhler OEM approvals, the company not only wanted a lubricant supplier, but a company that could offer ongoing technical support and prove to be a long-term partner.

Our World Class Lubrication (WCL) Management approach involved a comprehensive survey of the site, which was conducted by an experienced Klüber Lubrication Technician and resulted in a catalogue of assets with the corresponding lubrication points and recommendations for Buhler approved lubricants. As part of the survey process, an optimisation review with recommendations for potential actions to reduce lubrication tasks by utilising Klübermatics (automatic lubricators), and sight glasses was completed.

Following survey approval, we added a colour scheme and metal detectable colour coded labels for all lubrication points. Klüber Lubrication also supplied labour for label application throughout the mill.

All relevant quality and compliance documentation was provided in the form of a Compliance Folder, and additionally, the flour mill was informed of the MyKlüber app which gives access to all relevant

Finally, lubrication training in the form of Train the Trainer sessions were delivered onsite by Klüber Lubrication UK Technical Manager, Shaun Dell. This level of training meant that the attendees were equipped with the knowledge to deliver lubrication training in-house.

Next Steps: Taking World Class Lubrication Management on the road MAINTEC 2024, is a landmark event for the maintenance, reliability, and the asset management industry, and as industries continue to evolve and demand for higher productivity grows, the importance of effective lubrication in maintenance processes cannot be overstated. For this reason Klüber took the decision to exhibit at MAINTEC 2024 and explain how making a small investment in the right lubricant can increase the lifetime of machinery and reduce maintenance tasks.

One of our key messages at MAINTEC 2024 was our World Class Lubrication Management approach. The 7-step sequential process is designed to align with many common maintenance methodologies employed across manufacturing; whether that’s TPM, Autonomous Maintenance, or Operator Asset Care, our World Class Lubrication management approach, restores your operations to base conditions, before building a lubrication management system that delivers long term asset reliability, operational efficiency, and continuous improvement.

In the context of improving maintenance processes, the implementation of a strategic lubrication program is vital. Such a program involves selecting the right type

of lubricant for each application, establishing accurate lubrication intervals, and using precise application methods. It also includes monitoring and analysis to assess the effectiveness of the lubrication and to make informed decisions about maintenance activities.

Another often overlooked aspect of lubrication management is the storage and handing of them, but this is an area Klüber put a lot of emphasis on. Proper lubrication storage is crucial for several reasons that go beyond the simple need for a storage cabinet. It’s about creating a system that enhances overall maintenance practices and equipment.

Lubrication storage is essential for simplifying lubrication activities, reducing contamination risks, ensuring compliance, standardising lubricant use, and supporting effective operator asset care. It’s about creating a bespoke system that enhances overall maintenance practices and equipment reliability. You may want to keep your quality declarations and documentation in there too.

Therefore it is a topic worthy of consideration, taking it further than a standard COSHH cabinet and instead, designing a bespoke unit to ensure it meets the needs of your production processes.

A bespoke lubrication storage system, for improved visual management

In conclusion, the importance of lubrication in maintaining manufacturing assets and improving maintenance processes cannot, and should not be overlooked. By adopting Klüber best practices, businesses can enhance the reliability, efficiency, and longevity of their equipment, ultimately leading to better performance and cost saving.

The benefits of stainless steel coiled spring pins

Michael Pasko explores the advantages of employing 420 chrome stainless steel coiled spring pins across diverse applications

Spirol invented the Coiled Spring Pin in 1948 and they are used in companies developing automotive, medical, heavy equipment, military, aerospace, and consumer products. In applications requiring a combination of high strength, superior fatigue life, and corrosion resistance, 420 martensitic chrome stainless steel offer a host of technical benefits and provides an overall robust cost-effective solution.

High strength

Spirol’s 420 stainless steel Coiled Spring Pins are hardened to values approximating their high carbon steel equivalents and share the same minimum rated shear strength. This process also develops desired spring properties and fatigue resistance.

Coiled Spring Pins are offered in light, standard and heavy duty to meet applicationspecific requirements

Chrome stainless steel Coiled Pins also offer good corrosion protection against most common atmospheric and environmental conditions without the risk of rapid work hardening associated with 302/304 austenitic stainless steel. In most cases, companies may use 420 chrome stainless steel Coiled Spring Pins as drop-in replacements for high carbon steel pins assuming galvanic potential has been considered relative to the host material.

Corrosion resistance

When companies require corrosion resistant Spring Pins, there are two common options: carbon steel with

Precision Engineering

a sacrificial protective plating or coating or stainless steel alloys which are inherently corrosion resistant.

Platings and coatings provide excellent performance though they are consumed over time, whereas stainless steel provides a lifetime of protection providing free oxygen is available in the environment (free oxygen allows the fastener’s protective chromium oxide layer to reform if damaged). For plated and coated parts, once the plating or coating is depleted, the carbon steel is left unprotected and rapidly corrodes.

420 martensitic chrome stainless steel also provides good corrosion resistance in environments, including, but not limited to, normal atmosphere and humidity, steam, fresh water, alcohol, ammonia, alkalis, mild acids (e.g. carbonic), petroleum products such as gasoline, oil, crude, and mild detergents and sterilising solutions.

While 302/304 austenitic stainless steel Coiled Pins provide excellent corrosion protection, this material is not an appropriate solution when the pin will be subject to dynamic loads, or where strength and fatigue resistance must equal or exceed that of high carbon steel. Alternatively, 420 martensitic chrome stainless steel provides an exceptional combination of strength and fatigue resistance – in addition to its inherent corrosion resistance.

Fatigue life

420 chrome stainless steel also provides enhanced fatigue life, an important consideration given that Coiled Spring Pins often function as dynamic elements within many applications. A unique characteristic of Coiled Spring Pins is that their flexibility after installation protects host holes and assemblies by dampening vibration and shock loading.

For comparison, Coiled Pins of the same duty (ie. material thickness) produced from material of equal dimensions, were tested in the three standard materials: MBK – a standard duty, high carbon steel, plain finish; MCK – a standard duty, 420 chrome stainless steel, plain finish; and MDK – a standard duty, 300 series austenitic stainless steel, plain finish.

Resultant trend lines demonstrate 420 chrome stainless steels superiority in fatigue when tested at increasing percentages of assigned minimum double shear strength.

Summary

Coiled Spring Pins manufactured from 420 chrome stainless steel are an excellent material choice where high strength, moderate corrosion protection, and superior fatigue life are critical. Additional benefits to consider include cost/benefit relationship in performance applications, high-wear resistance, good tensile and creep strength at moderately elevated temperatures, oxidation and erosion resistance, improved component cleanliness as compared to high carbon steel, and reduced potential for mixed product & debris compared to plated and coated carbon steel product.

Michael Pasko is Applications Engineer at Spirol International.

Hart’s Speedors meet requirements

Four Speedor high-speed doors have been installed by Hart Door Systems at a major frozen and cooked meat manufacturing facility. The doors are just 1.5m wide and 1.95m high, the second smallest Speedors ever manufactured by Hart.

“The contract demonstrates two things,” says Gordon Kipling, regional sales manager for Hart. “Not only is our Speedor range available in distinctly different types of doors but where applicable the doors can be available in reduced sizes for precise requirements.

“In this case there was a need to protect the production environment against drafts, humidity, dust and dirt by installing our Speedor Cleanroom with its fast opening and closing speed. Our pharmaceutical standard Cleanroom Speedors control airflow thus reducing contaminants.”

Designed specifically for manufacturing and research facilities, Speedor Cleanroom works in environments where hygiene standards are high such as pharmaceuticals, electronics and micro-mechanics industries.

The main features of Speedor Cleanroom include maintaining strict air leakage

requirements over specified pressure differentials. Complete with an intelligent control panel with digital display each Cleanroom has a reliable and clean in-line drive system complete with an integral safety brake and a non-touch safety light curtain to protect personnel.

Advanced Rework Technology Ltd

(A.R.T.), the leading independent provider of IPC-certified and bespoke training services for the electronics assembly industry, is providing constantly-updated courses that help prevent component damage during electronic assembly.

■ Moisture, corrosion, and rust: Water can corrode certain metals, cause short circuits, and rust over-time.

ICS Cool Energy launches a state-of-the-art training suite in Totton

Electronic components and products risk many types of damage whilst on the assembly line, including:

■ Electronic Discharge Damage: This can result in immediate damage to sensitive components or it can lead to component failure further down the line.

■ Mechanical stress: Bending, dropping, and cracking are some of the ways that components can become damaged during assembly.

■ Thermal damage: Overheating during soldering can lead to the alteration of fundamental electronic properties.

■ Overcurrent and overvoltage: Components that are subject to currents or voltages beyond their maximum ratings can degrade over time or destroy immediately.

■ Reverse polarity: Connecting components in reverse can cause instant damage, especially in diodes, capacitors, and ICs.

■ Chemical damage: Improper cleaning agents or exposure to harmful chemicals can corrode contacts, leads, and solder joints.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR EXPLOSION RISK?

No matter what you're processing – chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, biomass, wood products – if it produces dusts or powders, there's a high probability you have an explosion risk. All it takes to interrupt plant productivity is a combustible material, oxygen and an ignition source.

For more than six decades, IEP Technologies has provided the right explosion protection solution for every type of process application. From cyclones and dust collectors to milling equipment and dryers. We can design a protection system and surround you with 24/7 service and support. Protecting plant starts with knowing your explosion risk.

Explosion suppressor: eSUPPRESSOR™

The IEP Technologies eSUPPRESSOR™ is a high-rate discharge suppressor used for explosion suppression and isolation systems. Its electro-mechanical operation is unique to the industry, as no pyrotechnic devices are required for activation.

The eSUPPRESSOR™ has standard features that include pressure monitoring, lock out tag out capability and LED indication of device status. A key benefit is that all the safety functions are fully monitored, which is not possible for any device employing pyrotechnic actuators. The eSUPPRESSOR™ design & manufacture has SIL2 third party certification.

Spark Detection: Atexon® Passive Protection

The ‘Next Generation’ Atexon® Spark Detection and Extinguishing systems by IEP Technologies have recently received third party approval by Factory Mutual (FM), meeting the latest detailed requirement of FM3265:2020. For UK users the equipment is also certified to UKCA, UKEX and VDS certification is in the pipeline. The innovative Atexon® SD300-EX series spark detector is a world first being able to detect visible light (VIS), near infrared light (NIR) and infrared light (IR), with a 180° field of view. The benefit being it has the ability to see different ignition sources though material layers, even with dense material flow, with reduced hardware.

Typically, the most cost-effective explosion protection method in terms of hardware, install and maintenance is IEP Technologies’ passive protection devices. These include vents, flameless vents and isolation devices. Explosion relief panels are calculated to vent a deflagration, and in doing so prevent the rapid developing pressure. This reduces the chance of vessel rupture, and structural damage. Similarly flameless vents work by the same principle, allowing the heat and pressure dissipation but differ from a traditional vent by mitigating the flame from passing into the atmosphere outside the flame arrestor. This type of venting method has all the benefits of traditional venting but has the added benefit of reducing the chance of possible injuries to personnel. Vent sizing is based on several different factors, call us today to discuss your options.
