Bias in medical devices continues to be an issue: ‘Healthcare needs to consider new approaches’ urges Dr Pardis Shafafi
F
ollowing the findings of the Equity in Medical Devices: Independent Review, which revealed bias within medical tools and devices, as well as raising concerns over the use of artificial intelligence – Dr Pardis Shafafi, anthropologist and Global Responsible Business Lead at Designit, has called for a change in approach:
“Unfortunately, we still incorrectly assume that the underlying health knowledge that informs care, products, and services is objective. It was the same twenty years ago when I was a student nurse. Things need to change.”
“Healthcare needs to consider new approaches to the design of its tools and use of AI – applying a framework akin to the Hippocratic Oath – a ‘Do No Harm’ attitude. It’s a
concept that healthcare professionals understand in the context of medical decision-making, but are struggling to apply elsewhere, such as in patient interactions and the design of the tools and processes. This new application would mean engaging with a situation actively, applying critical thinking, mitigating risk and ultimately, reducing harm.”
“If healthcare practitioners took the ‘Do No Harm’ approach they could avoid the biases that have plagued healthcare for years and are being exacerbated by AI – all of which have arisen precisely due to antiquated assumptions about the infallibility and objectiveness of medical science.”
Aground-breaking way of supporting doctors to diagnose prostate cancer using the latest artificial intelligence (AI) technology has launched in Somerset.
Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (FT) has joined forces with Cambridgebased technology company, Lucida Medical, as the first NHS trust in the UK to introduce its AI tool, called Pi, to work alongside teams of radiologists.
With support from charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Prostate Cancer Research, the Pi tool is being introduced at both Yeovil District and Musgrove Park hospitals to assist radiologists in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer, using an AI technique that looks at a prostate MRI scan.
Macmillan estimates that there are more than 500,000 men living with prostate cancer in the UK. It’s the most common cancer in men, and 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed in their
lifetime. Prostate cancer is particularly dangerous when found at stages 3 or 4, and more than 12,000 deaths occur in the UK each year.

In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to feature MediServices as our Healthcare Provision Company of the Month
MediServices was founded by CEO Andile Siziba, who single-handedly launched a mobile Intraoperative Monitoring service nationwide which drastically reduced the need for critical surgery to be cancelled when ‘in-house’ teams were unavailable.
Over the years, MediServices has grown exponentially, now employing 24 people and 50+ contractors, expanding into neurophysiology, cardiology and ultrasound. Its innovative, solution-driven models have transformed neurophysiology, clinical diagnostics, referrals, and administrative management.
Louaz Hofton, MediServices Healthcare’s new Chief Strategy Officer
Recently, the company has also recruited three senior roles to execute the strategic plan to harness the market share within neurophysiology.
Christine Mozzamdar as Chief Operating Officer, Dr Sajjad Ali as Clinical Lead for Neurophysiology & Deputy Medical Director Designate, and Louaz Hofton as Chief Strategy Officer. These appointments will greatly help to increase the service provision of outsourced and insourced services through diversification of clinical modalities.
Its neurophysiology capabilities include Intra Operative Monitoring (IONM), Electroencephalogram (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) – as well as cardiac physiology across the NHS and private sectors. In 2024, it further expanded to provide insourced and outsourced nonobstetric ultrasound services to hospital Trusts and Integrated Care Boards (ICB).
“MediServices has a dedicated team of support colleagues who manage patient referrals, bookings, and reporting too. The
support team also provides a seamless schedule for practitioners and consultants to ensure that clinical quality and safety are maintained, and the skills meet the clinical requirements. Additionally, we are developing an integrated digital booking system designed to streamline processes for NHS and private partners, thereby improving operational efficiency and supporting sustainable growth,” stated Andile Siziba, Founder and CEO.
Ellie Brennan,
MediServices Healthcare’s dedicated Trainee IONM Physiologist
apprenticeship programme and other training initiatives. Andile explained:
“The company currently employs three dynamic apprentices: two in business administration, and one in digital marketing. Early last year, we also welcomed a trainee Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM) physiologist. These programs help position MediServices as a forward-thinking employer committed to fostering talent and innovation within the healthcare sector. In 2025, we are also embarking on a research feasibility project with a local university, and local software company that involves the use of AI for machine learning that will focus on the use of our services.”
What’s more, MediServices is very much a part of its local community and sponsors a junior grassroots Cricket team. Andile explained more and what its future plans are.
At the core of any successful clinical service lies robust clinical governance. MediServices is a Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered organisation and has made significant investments in this area. Its commitment to excellence is demonstrated through its accreditation efforts that include: ISO 9001, ISO 14001 certifications, and IQIPS accreditation of which it is currently completing.
MediServices maintains a consistent focus on the future, and actively invests in its workforce through its comprehensive
Dr Sajjad Ali, our Clinical Lead for Neurophysiology & Deputy Medical Director, presented a masterclass to clinicians at The Association of Neurophysiological Scientists (ANS) conference late last year, discussing topics such as single fibre EMG
“By sponsoring Redditch Entaco Cricket Club, MediServices demonstrates its commitment to community engagement and social responsibility through strategic CSR initiatives. The sponsorship promotes health and wellness, creates positive social impact through supporting youth development, and showcases our dedication to inclusivity and community well-being.
Also, watch out for our brand-new website launching by the end of Q1. This is part of our strategic plan to enhance our market presence. The company also has plans to continue elevating brand awareness and salience.”

“Our main role is to design, manufacture and supply quality wall and door protection systems. We specialise in healthcare solutions such as wall protection, door protection, handrails and bed heads that enhance hygiene, reduce maintenance costs and ensure longterm durability whilst reducing maintenance costs,” stated Phil Christopher, Sales and Marketing Director.
With a focus on durability and performance, Yeoman Shield is proud to be a British manufacturer and works closely with healthcare facilities, care
homes and public sector buildings to provide robust protection solutions tailored to high-traffic environments in healthcare.
Life safety, compartmentalisation, regulatory compliance, and smoke containment are just a few of the critical reasons why fire door services are essential in healthcare settings. Yeoman Shield’s fire-rated door protection products, and associated services not only provide robust solutions but ensure both the safety and compliance of any facility.
Footfall and movement of equipment and objects in 24/7 operational settings such as hospitals and care homes can easily cause damage. For businesses that operate around the clock, fire doors must be in optimal condition in order to provide consistent safety. Yeoman Shield’s range of fire rated door protection products will save businesses thousands of pounds on future costs when it comes to replacement services or repair.
Yeoman Shield continually strives to expand its product range, offering a comprehensive selection that includes door frame and architrave protection, clapping lath protection, glazing beads for doors,
door protection panels, door kick plates, and door edge protection. Combined with exceptional customer service and expert installation, Yeoman Shield stands out as a clear leader in the industry.
What’s more, regular inspection, maintenance and servicing of fire doors are essential to ensure they function as intended in an emergency. Yeoman Shield has a suite of services to go alongside its long-standing and industry recognised products. All fire door inspections are undertaken by Yeoman Shield qualified fire door inspectors who can also carry out maintenance and remedial work on fire rated doorsets under the FIRAS third-party certification scheme, as well as install new ones. What’s more, Yeoman Shield door protection products can also be offered as supply only.
Project design
Yeoman Shield also offers a Colour Scheme Picker tool that allows clients to visualise designs and choose colours that align with their branding or interior needs featuring three ranges: On Trend, Premier and Ancillary. Once finished, simply click the ‘Get Summary’ button on the website and all details will be emailed directly to your inbox within minutes. Samples are also readily available.

Since 1966, Yeoman Shield has been dedicated to delivering high-quality solutions that protect buildings while preserving their aesthetic appeal. The company’s commitment to cost-effectiveness, regulatory compliance, and exceptional customer care are hallmarks of its trusted service. Looking ahead, we asked Phil about the company’s plans for the future.
“We plan to continue innovating our wall and door protection systems, invest in sustainable solutions, and grow our presence in the public sector to support a wider range of buildings.”

this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to feature Bellman & Symfon as our Amplified Technology Company of the Month
Bellman & Symfon, founded in 1989 by Peter Jungvid in Sweden, is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments. Over the years, the company has grown significantly, partnering with trusted distributers and collaborators worldwide to ensure its products reach those in need. Despite its global presence, Bellman & Symfon remains rooted in its Swedish origins, with its group head office still located there.
In the UK, the company operates from Warmington, Peterborough, specialising in assistive listening devices and alerting solutions. These innovative products empower individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to live independently, safely, and fully connected to their loved ones and the environment.
“We’re proud to be part of the assistive technology sector, working to make the world a more accessible place,” stated Elizabeth Penny, Marketing Executive.
“Our products are crafted with simplicity and reliability in mind, featuring a sleek, modern Scandinavian design. Take the Bellman Visit system, for instance – it’s an intuitive alerting solution that adapts to each user’s needs, helping them stay connected and safe, all while blending effortlessly into their daily routines.”
The Bellman Visit system is a popular choice for healthcare settings, as it helps patients to stay alert to important notifications while supporting staff with effective communication tools. Another product that is extremely popular is the Maxi Classic Listener, a personal amplifier designed for anyone struggling to hear speech or sounds clearly.
Its simple yet elegant design features minimal buttons and provides outstanding sound quality. Used with regular headphones, earphones or hearing aids, the Maxi Classic helps users enjoy conversations with loved ones in clinical environments as well as hear the TV with ease. It can be set up in just a few minutes and has already received glowing reviews for its great ergonomics, versatility, and digital features that are noise-free and clear to understand.
“The Maxi is used often in care settings as its situational listening means that those who are uncomfortable with hearing aids can listen and converse with caregivers on their terms,” added Elizabeth.
The company places a strong emphasis on consumer feedback, implementing robust procedures to enhance patient outcomes in clinical settings. In addition to continuously gathering input from customers, Bellman & Symfon conducts regular focus groups and research at its headquarters in Sweden to improve its solutions.
“These focus groups ensure that our solutions are continuously refined to meet the needs of users. We also note that having mild hearing loss is thought to double the risk of developing dementia, and this risk increases the more severe a person’s hearing loss
becomes. This has come from an RNID study, and is something we are aware of the importance of, particularly in healthcare settings,” stated Elizabeth.
Many of the Bellman & Symfon products are designed to integrate easily with existing systems, particularly in the telecare sector. Currently, the company’s Visiting Alerting System works with existing Careium, Access, Apello, Tunstall, Chiptech and Possum systems, but Elizabeth enlightened us as to some recent changes.
“We’re constantly evolving, and are proud to be collaborating with even more telecare providers to help those with hearing loss stay informed and alerted to important events in their home and care environments. At Bellman & Symfon, everything we do is driven by a passion for helping people reconnect with their loved ones and surroundings. We’re here to listen, support, and provide solutions that make life easier and brighter for our users.”
“Looking ahead, our vision remains the same – to keep innovating and extending our global reach. We will continue to support the deaf and hard-of-hearing community through partnerships, new products, and ongoing advancements in assistive technology.”

Bona, a global leader in innovative floor care and maintenance solutions, announces the launch of the new Bona Resilient Solution Colour Collection. Based on the science of colour psychology, the new collection is inspired by nature and designed to transform interior spaces into a welcoming environment that promotes wellbeing and productivity. The collection consists of five colour groups and 15 earthbound hues that work in tandem with the Bona Resilient System – Bona’s innovative system to restore, renew and upgrade resilient floors.
The Bona Resilient Solution Colour Collection was developed in collaboration with Dr. Axel Buether, a pioneer in modern evidence-based colour psychology. Drawing from reallife contexts, Dr. Buether’s research shows that by incorporating natural elements into interior spaces – such as the floor – colour can profoundly enhance wellbeing and improve physical health.
Findings reveal that the careful choice of colour in offices and interior spaces may have important benefits to an organisation by improving the
experience and behaviour of people. Dr. Buether’s research has showed that when using natural colours as a design tool, identification with the workplace grew with more than 50% among the entire staff, while also improving the rating of the working environment by up to 40%.
To simplify the colour selection process, Bona updated its Floor Visualiser tool which allows users to take a photo of a space to test colour and chip combinations quickly and easily.
The Government’s drive to address NHS waiting lists means more has to be done to resolve bed-blocking which now represents the bed capacity of 26 hospitals, a study reveals1
According to NHS data2, dealing with stairs at home is the primary cause of delay in hospital discharge. Stairway access specialist AAT has already put in place an innovative strategy to facilitate a solution: its stairclimber re-issue capability provides a safe and costefficient answer that can be achieved within a matter of days.
When the original recipient no longer needs the stairclimber, it can be reallocated to someone else, subject to appropriate assessment. Because the stairclimber is free-standing and portable, there is none of the delay inherent with alternative stairway
access methods, which require structural surveys, installation etc.
AAT is the UK’s largest supplier of stairclimbers to the NHS and local authorities, with thousands of units already ‘on the books’ within the health and social care sector. And it has developed a unique Universal Seating System that ensures almost every user –young or old – can be safely and corrected supported when using the stairclimber without the need to purchase additional accessories. Thus AAT is the only company currently capable of expediting such a rapid best value solution.
Full details of AAT’s re-issue package can be found here: https://www.aatgb.com/takesteps-to-deliver-adaptations-forunder-1000

The Pharmacy Show is the UK’s largest trade show for the primary care and community pharmacy sector. With over 300 exhibitors and a world-class education programme, the Pharmacy Show 2024 edition was buzzing with excitement from the 13th-14th October at the NEC in Birmingham. Every year, it’s the definitive calendar event for creative networking, showcasing new products and innovations and meeting new and existing customers across the industry.
The 2024 edition saw over 8,700 pharmacy professionals from across community pharmacy, general practice and integrated care systems, including 347 exhibitors and 221 speakers. All of this, under one roof, for two days of dedicated trade conversations, education and sales! The event is uniquely designed, with theatres spaced directly across the show floor, to maximise the flow of visitors to exhibitors. Each year, many visitors say they have met suppliers or learnt about products they would not normally have the time to meet with or learn about beforehand, demonstrating that this is the ideal opportunity to showcase new products to potential customers.
The show is widely regarded as bringing commonality of purpose and sharing a united pharmacy voice, across a fast-moving sector. It is the perfect place to carry out a ‘temperature check’ on what is happening across the industry and attracts distinguished keynote speakers.
Garry Tyson, Event Director of The Pharmacy Show stated, “Thank you to everyone who was part of The Pharmacy Show 2024. Speaking to visitors, exhibitors,
partners, speakers, and sponsors – the show was the best ever by all accounts. We promise to make it even better in 2025 and will continue to unite our profession and sector. A special thank you to my amazing team this year, whose hard work paid off. I look forward to hearing the success stories from the show and seeing our sector move forward into 2025!”
The 2024 show, like the ones before was designed with dynamism in mind, with dedicated hands-on workshops live on the show floor and the opportunity to test and touch new products and solutions over the course of the two days.
The educational content was exceptional, offering a conference programme filled with expert-led sessions on emerging trends and innovative practices. Highlights included Roz Gittins’ insightful talk, ‘Online Pharmacies: Sharing Learning from the Pharmacy Regulator,’ and a panel discussion on ‘The UK Pharmacy Professional Leadership Advisory Board – What It Means for You.’ Chaired by Mahendra G Patel OBE, Head of the Centre for Research Equity at the University of Oxford’s Department of Primary Care Health Sciences, the panel featured distinguished speakers: Professor Claire Anderson, President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society; Nicola Stockmann, President of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK); Shilpa Shah, CEO of Community Pharmacy North East London and Independent Expert Member of the UK Pharmacy Professional Leadership Advisory Board; and Laura Angus, Chief Pharmacy Officer and Director of
Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation at the UK Pharmacy Professional Leadership Advisory Board.
The exhibition showcased a vast array of products and solutions, representing a broad spectrum of the industry. Attendees included well-known household names like Barclays Bank, as well as major industry players such as Bio-Kult, Boots UK, ASDA, ARMY Medical Services, Brother, Procter & Gamble, Puffin Packaging, and LloydsPharmacy Clinical Homecare.
The showcased products included: PICKING HEAD by BD Rowa Technologies, featuring patented V-picking head technology for safe and efficient prescription picking of multiple packages; a NEW LAUNCH by BR Pharmaceuticals – Valucalm and ValuOva, a tailored blend of vitamins and nutrients designed to support individual health needs and lifestyle goals; and Liquid Skin: The Better Bandage by Clemence Medical. This shelf-ready pack contains six units of an innovative skin sealant, offering a superior wound care solution for small cuts, abrasions, and blisters, outperforming traditional plasters and bandages.
The Show featured more than just product displays. It also hosted companies offering valuable services to healthcare professionals, including Personal Tax Returns, Payroll Services, and Pharmacy VAT Returns. In addition, the Show attracted a wide range of prominent pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare brands, from large-scale organisations to smaller companies. Advocates and charities supporting community pharmacies across the UK were also in attendance, contributing to the event's diverse and impactful presence.
This is our pick of the best exhibitors from last year’s event, listed here in alphabetical order: Cripps & Maxim Group. Further details can be found on the next two pages.

For the past 12 years, Cripps has proudly had a stand at the NEC’s annual Pharmacy Show, making it a vital part of our calendar. This event gives us a unique opportunity to connect with operators, agents, funders, and fellow lawyers in the pharmacy sector. While our work in the sector is non-stop throughout the year, at the Pharmacy Show we have a dedicated weekend to reflect, learn, and engage with those shaping the future of pharmacy.
The hall is always buzzing with everyone who is passionate about primary care, striving to make a positive impact on their communities and patients. We relish the opportunity to listen to our clients, share experiences, and gain insights into what’s working, what isn’t, and what’s on the horizon for the pharmacy sector. This vibrant setting allows us to better understand how we can support those who need it from a legal perspective, ensuring we get things right for our clients so they can, in turn, provide exceptional care for their patients.
At Cripps, we are committed to providing excellent legal support across the pharmacy sector, from first acquisitions to retirement sales and everything in between. With over 25 years of experience, we handle around 30 deals each year, distinguishing ourselves through our sector expertise. Our deep knowledge of
the pharmacy market helps us anticipate potential issues, doing the thinking for our clients, and coming up with proactive solutions that create smooth transactions.
In our conversations at the Pharmacy Show, we’ve noticed several emerging trends shaping the future of the pharmacy sector. One key focus is the growing demand for technology integration within pharmacy operations. From digital prescriptions to AI-powered pharmacy management systems, technology is central to improving efficiency, patient care, and regulatory compliance.
We are also seeing a strong emphasis on collaboration within the healthcare ecosystem. Primary care networks are evolving, and there is more focus on cooperative models between pharmacies, GP practices, and other healthcare providers. This has been evidenced over
the past 5 years through the increased focus on delivery of services, which continues to be forefront of operators’ offering to their patients, particularly with the introduction of Pharmacy First (which is not without its own challenges). Empathy is essential in working with older people, but can so often be forgotten. Carers are time pressurised and often rushed, but understanding what struggles older people are going through can really help in providing calm and truly person centred care.
Alive is a charity based in the South West that is dedicated to improving the quality of life of older people. They provide activity and training to older people and carers anywhere in the UK which is both person centred and co-produced. Recently they have been supporting homes to improve their empathy and connections with those they work with. They are running training courses, using an empathy suit that is designed for carers to literally walk in the shoes of those they care for. The suit allows carers to change their approach, as they begin to truly understand how hard it is for older people to complete simple tasks, or understand what people are saying.
Lesley Hobbs, Deerhurst Care Home Manager, who undertook the Alive
training said, “The suit is amazing and so insightful. The dementia empathy suit has weights around the ankles and knee pads to restrict the movement and speed of the wearer. There are tinted goggles that affect the wearer’s peripheral vision alongside the colours around them. The gloves that are worn are connected to a machine that makes hands shake, meaning control of movements and co-ordination were
thrown out. You can wear headphones that play a continuous tinnitus sound, and the neck brace reduces the full and able movement of the neck. It was fascinating, and I believe all of our carers should experience the suit as part of an induction process.”
Not only are carers asked to put on the equipment, Alive’s trainer asks the attendees to complete day to day tasks, such as putting on a shirt, drawing, walking down a corridor, eating and drinking, mirroring the challenges that older people face. Very often these are tasks that to everyone else appear simple and normal.
One carer said, “Standing up was an effort, walking was challenging, simple tasks proved difficult and emotions were running high. I felt frustrated and wanted to give up, especially whilst flicking through a newspaper. At times I felt sad and lost whilst other people communicated around me as I couldn’t hear what they were saying.”
Another care staff member said, “This is the best training I’ve ever had!”
Nicola, Alive’s training and delivery manager, said, “I think this training is so important for anybody working with older people in any context. It’s a real eye-opener, an emotional experience. It’s something that’s going to stay with me, personally, for a while.”

You might be asking yourself where to use Ecogrit Concentrate and what you can use it for? The best idea is to keep a container in the boot of the car. The reason for this is to have something that would help you out if you ever got stuck on ice and could not get traction with your wheels, leaving you stranded.
