Innovating assistive technology for a more inclusive world

In this issue of Healthcare Matters, we are pleased to feature Bellman & Symfon as our Amplified Technology Company of the Month.

Bellman & Symfon, founded in 1989 by Peter Jungvid in Sweden, is dedicated to fostering inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments. Over the years, the company has grown significantly, partnering with trusted distributers and collaborators worldwide to ensure its products reach those in need. Despite its global presence, Bellman & Symfon remains rooted in its Swedish origins, with its group head office still located there.

In the UK, the company operates from Warmington, Peterborough, specialising in assistive listening devices and alerting solutions. These innovative products empower individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing to live independently, safely, and fully connected to their loved ones and the environment.

“We’re proud to be part of the assistive technology sector, working to make the world a more accessible place,” stated Elizabeth Penny, Marketing Executive.

“Our products are crafted with simplicity and reliability in mind, featuring a sleek, modern Scandinavian design. Take the Bellman Visit system, for instance – it’s an intuitive alerting solution that adapts to each user’s needs, helping them stay connected and safe, all while blending effortlessly into their daily routines.”

The Bellman Visit system is a popular choice for healthcare settings, as it helps patients to stay alert to important notifications while supporting staff with effective communication tools. Another product that is extremely popular is the Maxi Classic Listener, a personal amplifier designed for anyone struggling to hear speech or sounds clearly.

Its simple yet elegant design features minimal buttons and provides outstanding sound quality. Used with regular headphones, earphones or hearing aids, the Maxi Classic helps users enjoy conversations with loved ones in clinical environments as well as hear the TV with ease. It can be set up in just a few minutes and has already received glowing reviews for its great ergonomics, versatility, and digital features that are noise-free and clear to understand.

“The Maxi is used often in care settings as its situational listening means that those who are uncomfortable with hearing aids can listen and converse with caregivers on their terms,” added Elizabeth.

The company places a strong emphasis on consumer feedback, implementing robust procedures to enhance patient outcomes in clinical settings. In addition to continuously gathering input from customers, Bellman & Symfon conducts regular focus groups and research at its headquarters in Sweden to improve its solutions.

“These focus groups ensure that our solutions are continuously refined to meet the needs of users. We also note that having mild hearing loss is thought to double the risk of developing dementia, and this risk increases the more severe a person’s hearing loss becomes. This has come from an RNID study, and is something we are aware of the importance of, particularly in healthcare settings,” stated Elizabeth.

Many of the Bellman & Symfon products are designed to integrate easily with existing systems, particularly in the telecare sector. Currently, the company’s Visiting Alerting System works with existing Careium, Access, Apello, Tunstall, Chiptech and Possum systems, but Elizabeth enlightened us as to some recent changes.

“We’re constantly evolving, and are proud to be collaborating with even more telecare providers to help those with hearing loss stay informed and alerted to important events in their home and care environments. At Bellman & Symfon, everything we do is driven by a passion for helping people reconnect with their loved ones and surroundings. We’re here to listen, support, and provide solutions that make life easier and brighter for our users.”

“Looking ahead, our vision remains the same – to keep innovating and extending our global reach. We will continue to support the deaf and hard-of-hearing community through partnerships, new products, and ongoing advancements in assistive technology.”
