Nick@ Night By Nick Connell “Love is a temple, love’s the higher ground Ĺ„ Ĺ‹ %RQR 8 This week’s performances all revolve around the theme of love. It seems the issues and choices around love either end in forgiveness or murder - both physically and metaphorically. With extremism still lurking in the shadows, one wonders if we need a revival in the hearts of our playwrights to bring a deeper understanding of the current malaise sweeping the country. With spring approaching, one can always hope for a higher revelation in the relationships of men and women. TURANDOT Arizona Opera at Symphony Hall in Phoenix Arizona Opera waited over ten years to present their new production of Turandot - and it was well worth the wait. With an enormous cast of characters wrapped around a spectacular set of China - woven with incredible costumes of silk and color, this performance of music and story was breathtaking and astounding again! With Conductor James Meena leading the Arizona Opera Orchestra, and DirecWRU %HUQDUG 8]DQĹ‚V FUHDWLYH WRXFKHV UHYHDOHG LQ WKLV VWRU\ RI ORYH DQG GHDWK WKH Phoenix faithful were treated to a heavenly performance not seen since 1999! THIS Actors Theatre at The Herberger Center in Phoenix The love and sex theme continue at Actors Theatre with their regional première of This. For all the lauds from the NY Times as best new play off Broadway, this is more gamesmanship and adultery than substance. But the characters are funny to watch and even more humorous to listen to. With our leading character Jane lost in grief (played by Anne Marie Falvey), we must rely on her clique of friends, Marrell and Tom our unhappy husband and wife (played by Yolanda London and Michael Peck); Alan, their openly gay and “wainscotingâ€? pal (played by Oliver Wadsworth); and the wild card, a bisexual doctor without borders Frenchman Jean Pierre (played by David Dickerson) to bring her back to her senses. Especially appealing are the ones at Sun Up Brewing at 3rd and Camelback and the one at Four Peaks in Tempe. Both of these locations are MXVW RII WKH OLJKW UDLO OLQH DQG ZLOO PDNH for an easy ride to the festival. On Sunday, for those of you ready to work off some of Saturday’s indulgences, head on over to SanTan Brewing in old town Chandler‌and bring your ELNH 6DQ7DQ LV MRLQLQJ ZLWK WKHLU good friends from Ska Brewing to offer a Brews Cruise. This event will feature a little bit of food at SanTan and a mass bike ride to several of the area beer hotspots. If you’re not up for riding on Sunday, perhaps stopping by SanTan later in the day is the right move. The American Homebrewers Association will be hosting D PHPEHUVKLS UDOO\ DW ,I \RX always wanted to brew your own, this is the place to be. There will be plenty of highlight events for the week. Look for Chairman of the Mead, David Myers from Redstone Meadery to be in town, and on Sunday, he will host what has WR EH WKH 9DOOH\Ĺ‚V Ä&#x;UVW Mead Dinner at Trader Vic’s in Scottsdale. Also on Monday, many of the breweries will be tapping their Double Red ale brewed to commemorate Beer Week. Doug Odell from Odell Brewing in Fort Collins will appear on Monday at

Papago Brewing, and I am certain he will have something good to drink. Friday night’s feature event may very well be Epicuriad. Hosted at FireSky Resort by Foodies Like Us and EHQHÄ&#x;WWLQJ WKH Beer For Brains Foundation, this is one exciting food and EHHU HYHQW ,W IHDWXUHV JUHDW ORFDO chefs including Beau MacMillan, Aaron May, James Siao and Christopher Gross. Each of these chefs will be preparing a dish to be paired with an Arizona beer. As an added kicker, each dish will be paired with a local wine as well. The attendees will sample both beer and wine pairings and try to decide which they like best. It’s bound to be a touch choice and no matter whether beer or wine comes out on top, everybody who buys a ticket will be a winner. And, don’t forget there is a great charity involved. Other events to look for include a vegetarian beer dinner at Atlas Bistro, a Flemish Sour blending seminar at Whole Foods, a feature night for canned beer at Papago, many meet the brewers nights, several barrel aged beer tastings, and a whole host of other great events. We will feature a few of these over the next couple of weeks leading up to the event, but you can check out the week at www. arizonabeerweek.com. Check daily as the calendar is being updated constantly.
