Tatiana Maslany’s acclaimed performance in multiple roles – as clones – fuels another engrossing, exciting round of this BBC America series. Central character Sarah seeks her missing daughter Kira (Skyler Wexler), resulting in a grueling showdown with look-alike Rachel. Matt Frewer and Peter Outerbridge also return as regular cast members, with Patrick J. Aug. 2 - Larry Redhouse Piano jazz fusion The Larry Redhouse Trio is led by Navajo pianist Larry Redhouse, an indigenous American musician performing America’s original art form - jazz. His trio music has matured with a distinctively modern jazz sound, incorporating elements of straightahead jazz, Latin and funk styles into unique heart-felt interpretations of jazz standards and brilliant, soul-stirring originals. Redhouse has led groups that have opened for such notable jazz musicians as Chick Corea, Terence Blanchard and Donald Harrison. The trio has also performed at The Smithsonian Museum, The Kennedy Center Jazz Club, The Steinway Peace Piano Concert and The Grenoble Jazz Festival in France.

‘Violette’ Emmanuelle Devos and Sandrine Kiberlain play women who begin an intense relationship that lasts throughout their lives - a relationship based on the quest for freedom. (NR - 132 minutes) Stan: As often noted, the catalysts for living and the pursuit of our ambitions come from various life experiences. And so it is for the central character French novelist Violette Leduc who’s story is the subject of this French language biographical drama. Dark, foreboding, and often tragic, it serves to inspire the thought of the human will and surviving the adversities of life.

‘Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger’ Filmmaker Joe Berlinger follows the trial of the infamous gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, using the courtroom action as a springboard to examine accusations of multifaceted corruption within our nation’s law enforcement and legal systems. (R - 107 minutes) Herb: A riveting and labyrinthine crime documentary that drops staggering bombshells about the corruption of the FBI, state and local Boston agencies in the handling of the Bulger case. This story is proof positive that real life is more fascinating and twisted than any fictional crime story ever imagined by Hollywood. One of the best documentaries of the year.

‘Earth to Echo’ By Stan Robinson Working in film production for over two decades, my favorite projects were sci-fi themed stories where special effects were a key element to set the mood for the film. While working on the television series ‘The Adventures of Superboy’ for three seasons, the two departments I spent the most time being a ‘sponge’ on how they were going to translate the printed words to the screen: the camera and special effects departments. In director Dave Green’s vision for ‘Earth to Echo’, Brian “Astro” Bradley, Teo Halm and Reese Hartwig play

kids who, after receiving a bizarre series of encrypted messages, embark on an adventure with an extraterrestrial who needs their help. It’s a film where the young kids take center stage and present the basic premise anchored by ‘the innocence of children’, the ‘Earth to Echo’ young actors ‘spin a good yarn’ as the story unfolds. With shades of ‘Super 8’ (2011) on one hand and ‘E.T.’ (1982) on the other, delightful lessons abound with enjoyable moments for both the young and the old. (PG - 91 minutes)

Bug Springs Trail - Catalina Mountains Finally, we have some monsoon relief in the relentlessly dry Old Pueblo. The smell of rain and sound of cicadas make any hike or bike ride quite inviting this time of year, GO FOR IT! The Catalina’s are always beckoning to us in the summer with their shade and streams; however, there are some lower Catalina trails that get left out quite often. Green Mountain, Bug Springs and Prison Camp trails are just a few mid-level hikes (or bike rides) that you should check out if you decide to make the time. Between the desert valley and the high mountain forest there is a really beautiful transformation of scenery to be witnessed. Bug springs trail offers dramatic views while you switchback through the low pine flora and fauna to get up to the shady oaks. Whether you are a hiker or biker this trail will offer a pleasant challenge, and surprising milieu for photography and solitude. It is very popular with mountain bikers and the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bikers have adopted it to help maintain it for both hikers and mountain bikers. The

way up from the Bugs Spring parking lot is a hike and bike trek for the first 1.5 miles and then the trail evens out. You can also choose to just ride down and you are sure to find some challenging water bars and technical rocky areas. I hiked Bug springs last week on a gloriously gloomy day and saw many mountain bikers flying down and most of the cyclists I talked to said they didn’t ride up the trail but caravanned to Molino View parking lot. Even so, what a fun and challenging trail to ride! The gorgeous staggering Century plants are in bloom reaching their yellow flowers out to the sun. Mythically flowering once every 100 years, they actually bloom between 10 and 30 years and then die shortly after offering their delicious honey water to the pollinators of our lands. Huge rock formations, a well maintained trail and dramatic canyon and city views all make this hike one my new favorites in town and on my bike ride bucket list. It’s about 4.5 miles one way, with little shade for the first two miles, so bring extra water and pile on

your sunscreen. The much awaited monsoon season has finally arrived so get out and get out for a cloudy mountain trek this season! For more information on biking Bug Springs and other trails check out the Sonoran Desert Mountain Bikers at www.SDMB. org. To check out pictures of this area and many more around Arizona, check out my Facebook page “Take a Stroll with Niccole” and as always send

questions or comments to me at takeastrollwithniccole@gmail.com. Happy trails!

The wick of a trick candle has small amounts of magnesium in them. When you light the candle, you are also lighting the magnesium. When someone tries to blow out the flame, the magnesium inside the wick continues to burn and, in just a split second (or two or three), relights the wick. AZWeeklyMagazine.com
