Emmanuelle Seigner plays an actress who attempts to convince a director (Mathieu Amalric) that she is perfect for a role in his upcoming production. (NR - 96 minutes)
Joseph: With “Rage,” you get exactly what you expect from a Nicolas Cage movie - a lot of yelling and screaming and... well... rage. Director Paco Cabezas appears to be so obsessed with gratuitous violence and stereotypical characters that he forgets the fact that action is not entertaining unless it is accompanied by at least some sort of significance.
Stan: Only two actors and one location (the stage), director Roman Polanski presents a stark view of emotions; desire to accomplish a goal, and the will to succeed as an insider’s view is laid bare on the craft of acting. Featuring outstanding performances by the actors and mesmerizing cinematography on a single set, do not let the French language spoken deter you from a 90 minute emotionally stirring cinematic experience. Add ‘Venus in Fur’ to your must see list.
Stan: As always with a documentary, the relative subject matter has to relate either directly or indirectly to our emotional state of minds. ‘Ivory Tower’ is highly informative on the inequities of the institution of higher education and what resonated with this reviewer is the skyrocketing cost vs the end result with the thought: is the end result for knowledge or financial stability. Herb: Guaranteed to meet a tough audience reception locally when ASU is slammed on screen, this informative doc on the state of higher education is insightful, but ultimately unfulfilling in that it really offers no solutions but just shows the failures of the system. Well done, but a somewhat depressing look at college in the 21st century.

‘Earth to Echo’ ~ Poorly scripted, badly acted & miscast. Despite its flaws, the movie has heart & is fairly enjoyable. I want an Echo stuffed animal. Grade: B‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ ~ Was not a huge fan of the first installment, but part two won me over with the impressive animation and heartwarming storyline. Grade: B+
Stan: In a story that examines relationships and responsibilities relative to adults and sibling/ youngsters, ‘Hellion’ with deliberate pacing provides the opportunity for examination of motives for the central characters. While the narration seemed a bit over the top, the poignant performances of the cast and the brevity of the running time, aptly compensates. Joseph: “Hellion” moves along at a snail’s pace. And while some may find an appeal in the motion picture’s artistic approach, most moviegoers will simply become impatient as they wait for this melodrama to build up momentum. Unfortunately, it never does and we are left with an independent filmmaker’s measured vision of adolescent delinquency. Herb: Aaron Paul and Josh Wiggins deliver powerful performances in this gritty film about loss and bad choices. Both understated and edgy, I was impressed by the film but shocked at one point when I felt the narrative went too far to be believable. Worth a look to see what Aaron Paul is capable of post “Breaking Bad.”

Take a Ride with the Calico Mining Company The Calico Mine Ride at Knott’s Berry Farm opened on November 22, 1960 and became an industry-leading attraction. The seven story mountain, which required over 275 tons of steel, features three levels of train track, running the length of 1,080 feet. Inside, there are two bodies of water and five waterfalls. With a cost of over 1 million dollars, the ride was an instant hit with guests. Authentically designed to portray mining operations of the 1850’s, the concept and initial investment came from industry pioneer Bud Hurlbut. A handshake deal with park founder Walter Knott (who at one time worked in a mine in the Calico region) kicked off the project. For the past five decades guests have boarded one of six 19th century-themed steam locomotives for an eight-minute journey through the Calico Mine, passing several dozen “miners” hard at work. They were offered a glimpse into the mine’s Glory Hole, which is 65 feet deep and 90 feet wide.
Once on board, you are welcomed by an old miner who warns of the dangers ahead. Passengers travel past bubbling water, near a cave filled with bats, encounter vultures and more. HOPS!! By now just about everybody who watches television understands that Miller Lite is triple hop brewed, which is great because it brings to the forefront one of the four key ingredients in beer, the hop. Periodically over the next few weeks we will examine the ingredients of beer, so Miller Lite has given us the start we need to discuss hops. By the way, “periodically over the next few weeks…” means whenever I am pushing deadline and have no idea what to write about, so bear with me. What are hops? Great question, hops may be the most misunderstood of beer ingredients. They are a vital part of most beers as they provide flavor and aroma, as well as a certain stability to our favorite beverage. They are the female flower cone of the plant known as Humulus Lupulus. This plant is an aggressive growing, climbing vine which is usually trained to climb up strings attached to trellises in the hop field, or hop yard. With the right amount of sunshine, a hop plant can potentially reach 40 feet high, although 25 feet is more common. They are also heavy with an average
plant coming in at 20 plus pounds, so the string they grow on must be fairly strong. The first known instance of hop cultivation was in the Eighth Century in Hallertau Germany, however they were not used in beer making, to the best of anyone’s knowledge, until somewhere around 1079 AD. Even then it took a while for hops to catch on and replace other flavoring agents, most notably gruit, as a regular ingredient in beer. Gruit was an herbal mixture which contained a large variety of herbs no longer in regular use today, some of them narcotic in nature. It took until the Sixteenth Century for hops to fully replace other herbs as the flavoring choice in beer. In fact, for a while in England, “Ale” was considered to be an unhopped beverage and “Beer” was hopped. This may have given rise to modern day misconceptions that ale is somehow different from beer, rather than a subset of the drink. Hops begin their life as rhizomes. Rhizomes appear to be nothing more than root cuttings with buds growing
from them, but also contain stored nutrients to provide initial energy for growth. It usually takes hops two to three years to grow to full maturity and produce a good output of hop flowers for harvest. Hop blossoms start out looking like large sand burrs and then take on a characteristic cone shape and grow in size. The size of a fully developed cone depends on the variety, varying from one to two inches long by one half to one inch in diameter. The hops are fully mature and ready for picking when two changes take place. First, immature hops have a damp, soft feel and when squeezed slightly tend to stay compressed. Mature hops feel more like paper, spring back when squeezed and feel noticeably lighter. The second key test is to pick an average example hop and cut it lengthwise down the center with a knife. When ready to pick the yellow powder, the lupulin sacs containing the essential oils and bitter substances, will be a dark shade of yellow, like the stripes on a highway, and it will be pungent. Hops
are about 80% water when initially picked. Keep that number in mind as we will discuss the importance of that a little later. Commercial hops are typically harvested by pulling the entire vine and taking it to an area where the hop vines are hung and dried. The cones are then harvested and usually processed into pellets. Although sometimes hops are sold as dry whole flowers or processed into hop oils. Different types of hops have different properties; some are used for bittering, some are used for flavor, and some are used for aroma. Depending on when they are added, hops can theoretically be used for any of these desired results. Bittering is important even though you may think you don’t like a bitter characteristic in beer. Without bittering hops, beer would be nothing but an incredibly sweet beverage that would be almost too cloying to drink. This comes from the starches in the malt that are converted to sugars during the brewing process. A little bitterness is needed even in the maltiest of beers. Noble Hops are perhaps the only subcategory of hops that are well known. They are central European varietals named for the region they are grown in: Hallertau, Saaz, Spalt and Tetnang. These hops have very low bitterness and come off as more herbal and spicy than anything else. They are typically used for the aromas they provide more than anything else. Look for these hops in traditional European lagers. On the American side, as with many things, bigger and bolder is better. Americans like bold flavors and the dominant hop varietals here certainly support that statement. The best known hop is the Cascade. Cascade hops are usually responsible for the grapefruit and other citrus notes found in many American Pale Ales and IPAs. Centennial hops are supercharged Cascades and are frequently used in conjunction with them. Centennials are notably used as the exclusive hop in Bell’s Two Hearted Ale. Other American hops include Amarillo (a hybrid of Cascades with a spicy twist to the citrus notes), Chinook (with a piney, resinous character), Nugget (a strong bittering hop used in a variety of American beer styles), and Simcoe (a spicy/floral mix of flavors which is appropriate in just about any ale that has a hoppy component.) Hops are often used together to provide a combination of flavors and aromas and beers are sometimes dry-hopped. Dry hopping involves
adding hops to the beer during the fermentation process to provide an additional burst of aroma to a beer, usually a pale ale or IPA. There has been a recent trend towards single hop beers. With a single hop beer each batch is produced with a single variety of hop which changes every time it is brewed. This really illustrates the different flavors and aromas hops can bring to beer. Fresh or wet hop beers are anxiously awaited and tend to arrive in October. What is a wet hop beer? It is a beer that is produced using the freshest hops possible. In many cases they are harvested local to the brewery and show up in the brew kettle the same day they are picked. If no hop fields are near the brewery, they are shipped overnight and added to the brew kettle no more than 24 hours after harvest. Since fresh picked hops are 80% water, these beers are called wet-hopped. The freshness of the hops provides an amazing aroma and flavor which makes you think you are in the middle of the hop field. Wet hop beers are similar to Beaujolais Nouveau wines which are best consumed young and fresh. They should be consumed within three months of bottling. While they will still be drinkable and enjoyable past that time, the fresh aspect of the hops may be lost. Next time you try your favorite beer, try to determine the hop profile. Is it all in the aroma? Is it spicy or citrusy? Does it leave a lingering finish? Doing this will be another step in your journey of fine beer appreciation.

Strahan angling to get slimed on ‘Kids Choice Sports 2014’ Michael Strahan hosting the “Kids Choice Sports 2014” is such a perfect match it’s surprising that the Thursday, July 17 live show on Nickelodeon is the first one.

Categories include the expected, such as best male and best female athletes. There’s also favorite newcomer, favorite catch, best save and clutch player of the year.
That’s inarguable. Strahan has proven himself completely comfortable on live television; he has a genuine enthusiasm and describes himself as a big kid.
This being a Nick awards show, there are fun categories: “sickest moves, don’t try this at home award, smells like team spirit, party like a sports star, king and queen of swag, biggest cannon and favorite comeback athlete.”
And like any kid, he has his eyes set on one very special Nickelodeon awards byproduct – slime.
“Who has the best swag is not necessarily about attitude,” Strahan says. “It’s about confidence. There are different ways of swag. So who has their own unique style that people love and want to emulate?” Strahan knows about swagger. He played in the NFL for 15 years, was named to the 2014 Pro Football Hall of Fame. And in 2001, he broke the 18-year-old NFL single season sack record with 22.5 sacks, a record that still stands. Given his years on the New York Giants and on “Live! With Kelly and Michael” Strahan has met pretty much everybody, but says, “I still get excited to see athletes I admire. I am excited to see Derek

“I am prepared to get slimed,” Strahan says. “ I’ll suck it up and just let it happen. If you get slimed, it tastes like applesauce. The outfit you wear? Be prepared to lose it.” Like Nick’s other awards shows, children are encouraged to vote often. Let’s face it, choosing the queen of swag is not as serious as electing your next senator – though it is more fun. “You can vote many times,” he says. “That’s the great thing about it. Kids are on their computer and use social media. When my generation was coming up, we didn’t have the opportunity to vote on our favorites athletes. It’s your awards show and vote as much as you want.”

Cruz homered for the Orioles on Opening Day of the 2014 season and hasn’t looked back. As of late June, he was leading the league in home runs and RBIs and was in the top 15 in batting average. Should his production continue and those of his counterparts falter, Cruz could find himself a potential triple-crown threat. Meanwhile, Cruz’s PED days appear to be behind him. ‘Move over, zombies, it’s a vampire apocalypse! Early on in “The Strain,” a chilling summer series premiering Sunday, July 13, on FX, an airliner from Berlin arrives at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Very quickly, airport officials notice that the aircraft is sitting a little too quietly on the tarmac. All the window shades but one are drawn. There’s no chatter coming from the cockpit, nor is there any cell phone activity from the passengers. It’s a “dead plane.” Fearing the worst, they summon Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll, “House of Cards”), head of a team from the Center for Disease Control, who enters the airplane in heavy protective gear to find all passengers and crew dead, albeit with no apparent signs of injury. As the investigation continues, they discover the

plane’s storage compartment contains a large wooden crate filled with earth, but otherwise empty. And here’s a curious thing: Its latch is on the inside ... . Yes, kids, we’re dealing with vampires, but not the sensitive bloodsuckers from The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” or, god forbid, the sparkly brooders from the “Twilight” books and movies. Adapted by Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) and Chuck Hogan from their best-selling trilogy of books, “The Strain” gives us terrifying old-school vampires in thrall to an ancient Master, spreading their plague via tiny, repulsive parasitic worms. They even have their own Van Helsing figure to battle: crusty Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley, best known for hosting that infamous Red Wedding on HBO’s “Game of Thrones”).

“I didn’t think the world needed another handsome, brooding vampire show,” says executive producer Carlton Cuse, who will run the show on a weekly basis (del Toro directed the pilot). “Guillermo has really seeped in a lot of old mythological stories. This idea of vampires as Strigoi, which is the Romanian word for vampires, that they are really scary and deadly and dangerous — that was really appealing to me.” Cuse adds that to some extent the arc of “The Strain” — which he hopes will run for five seasons — chronicles how Stoll’s character, a man of science, must come to accept the supernatural roots of this escalating global crisis. When we first meet Ephraim, though, he’s a former golden boy whose marriage
has imploded just as he is about to be confronted with the most difficult case of his career. “Everything is sort of coming crashing down all at once,” Stoll says. “And he really doesn’t have the skills to deal with failure. That seems like a really fertile ground to play in. “Guillermo is really interested in the physical and the anatomical on a molecular level, but he’s also interested in the mythological and the spiritual. I think where those two things meet is where he finds his inspiration,” the actor adds.

Family of eccentrics takes law into own hands in NBC’s ‘Engels’

WHAT TO WATCH
With the stateside success of such Canadian-made series as “Rookie Blue,” “Love It or List It” and “Top Chef Canada,” NBC hopes to catch summer lightning in a bottle with another import from north of the border, “Working the Engels.” The half-hour sitcom, which premieres Thursday, July 10, stars Kacey Rohl (“The Killing,” “Red Riding Hood”) as Jenna, a young lawyer who inherits her father’s legal practice upon his death. It turns out, though, that Dad wasn’t great at paying the bills, as the practice is $200,000 in debt, so Jenna and the rest of her clan come together to rescue it from the brink. That cast of ne’er-do-wells and crazies is composed of Ceil (Andrea Martin, “SCTV,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”), the overly dramatic, slightly narcissistic mother hen who works as the firm’s paralegal; Sandy (Azura Skye, “Zoe,” “Jack and Jane”), the slacking ex-druggie sister who takes over as the receptionist; and Jimmy (Benjamin Arthur, Canada’s “Less Than Kind,” “American Reunion”), the career petty criminal whose street smarts come in handy as the investigator. Katie Ford (“Desperate Housewives,” “Miss Congeniality”), an executive producer who created the series with sister Jane Cooper Ford, explains she originally pitched the series to the American networks as an hour procedural, but wound up retooling it to a comedy after getting laughs at the pitch. “It was sort of a light drama with the idea that it was really character-based with these fun, rich characters ,” she says. “That’s what really stayed with me and that was what felt the most fun. I didn’t know what I was talking about in terms of pitching a procedural, but the rest of it really kind of came to life. “One of the weird sort of inspirations for it, oddly, some time ago was ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter,’ “ she continues. “Because to me that was like the only family that was working together, and all they did was smoke and pray, but I found it compelling to watch them. So I thought that’d be fun to actually take that, a family working together, and put that in a narrative.” Jenna, the central character, is the glue of the Engels, someone whom Rohl describes as the “only one who has her feet on the ground.” “She is the rock, I think, that everybody uses to help themselves stand up when they’re in various states of whatever,” she says. “But she’s definitely the only one with a solid head on her shoulders and the only one who sort of thinks logically and practically. And yeah, she does hold everybody together. I think she’s the pillar that everybody holds onto.” While Jenna is the pillar, her mother, Ceil, thinks she is. Though her portrayer, Martin, says there’s nothing she wouldn’t do for her kids. “I think that she lives through her children,” Martin says. “I think that she’s slightly in denial about her own abilities. I think there is a bit of narcissism but I don’t think that that comes first. I think the love for her family — and family — comes first. But of course, she has her own eccentricities, and probably her husband pampered her a little bit. So now she’s in the world without much purpose. He’s gone, the kids are grown ... . Freud said there’s two things in the world: love and work. And now she’s able to combine both of them in ‘Working the Engels,’ so it seems for Ceil it’s everything.” “What I love that Andrea brought to this character,” Ford says, “is she brought a warmth. I mean, the character Ceil has a warmth and loves her kids. And like she says in the pilot, ‘I’m like a bull in a candy store when it comes to my kids.’ I mean, it’s all about them. And Andrea brought this sort of warmth and support. Like we would have a couple of lines where we would have Ceil kind of dismiss Sandy or dismiss Jimmy in some way. But Andrea always turns those lines around to make them supportive, and it actually made it funnier. “And Andrea’s such a wonderful actress,” Ford continues. “I love how she approaches everything from finding the truth of it and from there it can get ridiculous. And I think that’s part of what is the glue of this show, is kind of the truth of moments and the humor that sort of keeps a family connected.” Rohl, also a Martin fan, agrees. “I can’t speak for her,” she says, “but I don’t think she’s ever been a real fan of that sort of cut down, laugh-at-someone comedy. And I think that affected the tone of our show in a really great way.” Ultimately for the cast and crew, “Working the Engels” is about family. “I think that we have a show that really does show that positive side of family,” Rohl says. “That we can all (annoy) each other but still really, really love each other at the end of the day and do it out of love.” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The point is you are trying to make the audience laugh, and not each other. The times we crack up and relax is during the rehearsal. By the time you reach an audience, you are apprehensive and nervous and hope it will go all right. Given that you came out publicly then helped to change the laws, is there a great deal of satisfaction that you can now play part of a longtime gay couple?
Some people say these characters are letting down gay people by behaving badly or so stupidly. ... The work I have done on behalf of gay rights here is no more than many others have done, but to have been part of the sea change and to see it happen up close, and worrying about it and understanding how important politics is and going about changing the law has been fascinating for me, and it was something I cared about and was an authority on. And as an openly gay man, who could speak about the pressures and injustices of the past, I am very proud really of not me but the way this country with its old prejudices has changed. You wont find an old politician here who won’t say equality belongs to everyone. On the grounds of humanity, the laws have changed and now the work at hand is to change everyone’s view in the country and that will take longer to make sure everyone is at ease with the situation.
