LET FREEDOM SING Friday, July 4th at 3 pm Centennial Hall Bring the entire family to celebrate the Fourth of July at the 30th annual Let Freedom Sing, a patriotic spectacular conducted by Dr. Joan Ashcraft. The event is produced by Arts Express, an organization that strives to change lives and build a better community by creating opportunities to learn and experience the power of the arts. This annual production celebrates our freedom and those who served to protect it throughout the years. When the lights are dimmed inside Centennial Hall, Let Freedom Sing will feature patriotic favorites, popular American music from several decades and fantastic family entertainment. The audience will be invited to participate throughout the program. Music such

as Sweet Land of Liberty and God Bless the USA will remind you that our freedom has not occurred without a price. The Davis-Monthan Honor Guard will post the colors, and each branch of the military will be recognized during a special Salute to the Armed Forces. The sounds of Tucson’s own Big Band Express, directed by Pete Swan, will have everyone tapping their feet. Founded in 1994, Big Band Express was created to promote big band music in Southern Arizona through its performances. Next on the program is a tribute to Freedom Has A Face: Mike Viti’s Hiking for Heroes, a project dedicated to honor the legacy of every service member who has been killed in action during the Global War on Terror. A former soldier and West Point graduate, Viti has pledged to hike over 7,100 kilometers, one for every member

of the Armed Forces killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. His trek began in DuPont, WA and will take him through Tucson this summer. The Tucson community is invited to walk with Mike locally as he heads east toward his final destination of the 215th Army-Navy Football Game in Baltimore on December 13. The next portion of Let Freedom Sing celebrates our country’s tenacity and spirit with such selections as I’m Ready and St. Louis Blues performed by award winning blues and boogie woogie pianist Arthur Migliazza. Arthur has been playing piano professionally since age 13 and is a graduate of Sabino HS and University of Arizona. Arthur was inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame and has twice been a finalist at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN. Your spirits will soar when you see Arthur’s fingers flying as his piano rises up onto the stage. The pace will change slightly to honor the everyday sacrifices of soldiers

and their families. Opera and musical theatre artists Stephanie Carlson and Dennis Tamblyn will perform How Could I Ever Know from Secret Garden with each also featured on their own selections. Tucson favorite Armen Dirtadian will lend his special vocal style during his performance with Big Band Express. This portion of the program will conclude with a song from Walt Disney World’s millennium celebration called We Go On. Other talented performers throughout the afternoon, in addition to the magnificent Arts Express Choir and Orchestra, will include Delores Maddox, Jeremiah Gaefke, Erin Hagedon, Peter Ageh, Ruby Peckford, Jane Brandt and Wayne McKinley. Unique to this year’s performance will be a special recognition of the 70th anniversary of D-Day. White Cliffs of Dover, Taps and A Letter from Mom will bring the realities of war closer to home, building toward the final portion of the program that honors all

3 branches of our military, veterans and active duty personnel with a Salute to the Armed Forces. Many other patriotic and popular favorites will round out the afternoon including A Tribute to George M. Cohan, Make Them Hear You from Ragtime and America the Beautiful, God Bless America and I Believe in America. The experience wouldn’t be complete without viewing the lifesized cardboard replica of Charles Lindbergh’s plane, the Spirit of St Louis, which will be located outside Centennial Hall. Created by students in Arts America, a summer program of Arts Express, the airplane was the program’s “Big Project” teaching them about large set design and the American history of the 1920’s. FC TUCSON 4th OF JULY BLAST FC Tucson officially revealed the Inaugural FC Tucson 4th of July Blast Presented by CenturyLink. The fireworks show will follow FC Tucson’s match against Albuquerque Sol FC on Friday, July 4. The match will kick off at 7:30 p.m. with the fireworks scheduled to begin roughly 30 minutes after game concludes. “We want this to be the biggest, loudest and most electric crowd we’ve ever had at an FC Tucson match,” said the FC Tucson ownership group in a joint statement. “We expect to set a club record for the highest attendance

in our young history and then we want to celebrate the world’s greatest sport in a World Cup year with a spectacular display during the match and the afterward. FC Tucson would like to thank CenturyLink for stepping up to help us make this first year of a new tradition possible. This will be an amazing celebration.” “We at CenturyLink are extremely excited to partner with FC Tucson for this year’s 4th of July Blast,” said Century Link VP and GM for Greater Arizona Guy Gunther. “CenturyLink is proud to be associated with FC Tucson and organization with a bright future, community focus and a desire to help grow the great game of soccer locally and nationally.” The 4th of July Blast will be the third and final match of the Southwestern Showdown featuring FC Tucson and Albuquerque Sol FC. ‘Earth to Echo’

‘Coherence’

‘Deliver Us from Evil’

On the night of an astronomical anomaly, eight friends at a dinner party experience a troubling chain of reality bending events. (NR - 89 minutes)

Eric Bana plays a New York police officer who begins investigating a series of disturbing and inexplicable crimes and joins forces with an unconventional priest (Edgar Ramirez) to combat the frightening and demonic possessions that are terrorizing their city. (R - 118 minutes)

Herb: Smart, quirky and unexpected, this film is a real treat that had me guessing what would happen next, right up until the final frame. Proof positive that story is king in good films, this microbudget, unconventional sci-fi thriller is a must see.

Joseph: Dry scenes set during daytime are scarce in “Deliver Us from Evil.” So is any originality (it is your standard exorcism flick), cohesiveness (its story constantly heads off in different directions) or justifiable lure (it simply is not very entertaining). Worst of all, it wastes the talent of Joel McHale who, in a supporting role, is the movie’s only worthwhile element.

Brian “Astro” Bradley, Teo Halm and Reese Hartwig play kids who, after receiving a bizarre series of encrypted messages, embark on an adventure with an extraterrestrial who needs their help. (PG - 91 minutes) Stan: A film where the young kids take center stage and present the basic premise anchored by ‘the innocence of children’, the ‘Earth to Echo’ young actors ‘spin a good yarn’ as the story unfolds. With shades of ‘Super 8’ (2011) on one hand and ‘E.T.’ (1982) on the other, delightful lessons abound with enjoyable moments for both the young and the old. Joseph: Despite a second act that sags into boredom with repetitive scenes of loud chaos and an otherwise unoriginal plot that blends “E.T.” with “Chronicle,” “Earth to Echo” is an entertaining and even endearing extraterrestrial adventure, featuring an energetic pace that keeps audiences of all ages engaged and amused.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Actors Eric Bana and Joel McHale (‘Deliver Us from Evil’) By Joseph J. Airdo “I am good friends with Scott Derrickson, the guy who wrote and directed it who also wrote ‘Sinister’ and ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ and soon to be directing ‘Doctor Strange.’ And I thank God that I am friends with him. As he was writing this, he said, ‘I am writing this character as if it were you.’ So I went, ‘Cool. Hope I get to do it.’ “And after a lot of actors passed and actresses as well... and trained animals - I got the nod. So that is how I ended up getting it. As far as doing more stuff like this, I had a ball. I really had a great time and will look back on it as one of the more rewarding and fun and interesting [projects that I have ever done].” -

Joel McHale “I loved the character of Ralph Sarchie and I would have played him if it was just a straight-out thriller with no horror elements. I loved his storyline. I loved his journey as a person in the script - the fact that a person does not get to progress in life until they tackle their personal demons and the fact that he was basically kind of blocked until he dealt with things in his past. “I was just really fascinated from human level about all of that stuff. He just happened to be in a horror film with a great director. And I am

really glad that I did it. It was certainly a hell of a lot of fun to play a Bronx detective. I grew up watching a lot of cop stuff and at one stage briefly entertained the idea of becoming a cop. So it was great to play a man in a uniform who wasn’t in a uniform.” Eric Bana

Director Dave Green and Actor Reese C. Hartwig (‘Earth to Echo’) By Stan Robinson

“The project came to me in that I met the producer Andrew Panay, I went to a meeting and he said I really like your short films, I love the comedy in them and I love your editing, and we have this idea for a movie about a bunch of kids who go in the middle of nowhere and discover something strange. The seed of the idea came from him, and then me and my writing partnerdeveloped the idea!

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! “For shooting we had 28 days of principle photography and it was very fast shooting. We shot during the summer at night with kids so the hours, as you know, were very tight since we were shooting with kids. The sun was gone by 9pm for pure darkness and the kids could only shoot until 12:30am so we had those 3 ½ hours of basically never cutting (the camera) so it was a constant ‘Lets go, lets go’. We were really moving along with shooting, between 4 to 8 pages of script a day depending on the scene. The kids were wonderful and loving the fast pace of shooting!” - Dave Green

“I’m a big sci-fi fan, and I do a bunch of auditions all the time. The audition for this one was just another audition and I was thinking maybe I’ll get it and maybe I won’t. The audition for

‘Earth to Echo’ was completely fake! The audition was an entirely made up story and not the actual ‘Echo’ story! They liked my read, they called me back for the traditional call back, and I got the part! The shoot pace was super productive, I mean it had to be! We were all working really hard, and it was very cool! What was very cool was Dave had this awesome idea right before we started doing the movie. We all went out to Universal City Walk, went to dinner and we all just kind of ‘broke the ice’ kind of stuff so that when we got to the filming we were able to get right to work! Dave is a wonderful director who related to each of our personalities so we felt free to get into our characters!”- Reese C. Hartwig

Tuesday night bike ride – Tucson, AZ

Have you ever seen the 100 or so bicyclers strolling along by the U of A campus with their funky carnie lights and boom boxes yelling “Happy Tuesday”? If you have ever witnessed The Tour de Tuesday crowd, you would know and remember that encounter well. They swoop under the 1-10 interstate and up and down the river paths, through neighborhoods and

into downtown streets warning each other of potholes and bumps in the road. If you are close enough to them you will hear the music and random chatter scattered throughout the group, everyone in a while someone will yell “POTHOLE!” or “BUMP!” to warn the other cyclist of inherent wipeout danger. If you spot them from farther away you can see all the different colored lights flaring off into the arid night air, riding together as a community yet all at their own pace and with their own style. This epic ride has been going on for about 6 years and was all started by a bunch of local guys for fun to escape the heat of the summer sun. The ride is supposed to be roughly 8

miles and takes a different route each time they go out into the city. I joined the group on the 24th of June and we ended up with 13 miles total for that evenings ride, at the slow pace of the group it was hardly noticeable. Everyone meets at about 8:30 p.m. out by the big flag pole at Old Main building on the U of A campus. People come out from all over the city. College students, families, grandparents and fun seekers with every type of bike imaginable call come out from the shelter of buildings to enjoy our summer nights and the good company. The ride takes off at about 9:00 p.m. and the rider’s smiles show great pleasure to have the nighttime Tucson wind in their faces as the excitement begins. Biking is a huge part of our culture in Tucson, it is not just a means of transportation or a sport; it is a way of life in the old Pueblo. Bike riding is sustainable commuting, a fun way to exercise, it’s good for the environment

and brings the community together in ways that nothing else can. Everyone is welcome, so get out and take a Tuesday night trek this summer! Meet up: Tuesday’s at 8:30 p.m. at the flagpole in front of Old Main Building at the U of A. Bike riders of all ages, sizes and bike styles are welcome to join this inviting and fun community group. This ride goes at a slow pace and stops to wait for stragglers along the way. Check out their Facebook page for more information at -Tuesday-Night-Bike-Ride- or find me at Take a Stroll with Niccole

Any cooking show where the grand prize is a giant golden Spork and $1,000 has a sense of humor. Clearly these contestants are not vying for the James Beard Foundation Award. MTV’s latest, “Snack-Off’ premiering Thursday, July 10, features untrained cooks using ingredients that include jellybeans and waffles. Essentially, these are dishes that would satisfy most college students with the munchies. It’s not serious food, yet one of the chefs, Jason Quinn, is quite serious about food. “The one issue about doing the show for me is I am in this tradition, my ideal scenario is to be a chef, who makes great food and uses ultra premium ingredients,” Quinn says. “What I am worried about with the show is, will I be labeled as a junk food chef?” He’s a self-trained chef and chats while buying lobsters at an Asian market for his Santa Ana restaurant, Playground. “It is one of those things I can buy through my distributor for $12 a pound, or go to an Asian market for $6.99,” he says. “Snack-Off is the worst cooking show ever made, but the most hilarious cooking show ever made,” Quinn says. “As far as being about food, it is terrible. But it is a parody. (Host) Eddie Huang pulled me aside to say, ‘This isn’t ‘Iron Chef,’ it is a parody.’ ”

I share a lot in common with Porthos. Both of us are from humble beginnings. He was born into darkness and found his way into light, and much as I did in becoming a professional actor. I am from Brixton in South London. It was rough. I was congratulated to get out. I always had the world vision of wanting to get out. Porthos needed something to fight for and believe in.
