NEW YORK BAGELS ‘N BIALYS GOES KOSHER New York Bagels’ N Bialys has recently gone Kosher in the bakery. Under the supervision of the Vaad Hakashruth of greater Phoenix, the bakery portion of the restaurant & deli underwent the process of certification to make the bagels, bialys and breads pareve, pas Yisroel. Owners Shelley Curtis and Ruth Leatherman are committed to maintaining the certification and moving forward to insure consumers that they are buying baked goods that meet the highest level of Kosher law. There has been a void in the valley since another local bakery closed that they hope to fill as they look for additional bakers to help them expand their Kosher offerings. They are pleased that all products are preservative free with natural ingredients that you can pronounce. NYBB has offered bagels n bialys wholesale around town at some of the finest businesses and hopes to now expand into a whole new market with Kosher establishments. In addition to the now Kosher bagels n bialys, the restaurant & deli offers breakfast and lunch with all the traditional fare of a kosher style New York deli 365 days a year opening

Weir has participated in various reformations with Grateful Dead members, such as stints as The Other Ones and The Dead. Weir has also collaborated in recording and on stage performances with Bob Dylan, bassist Rob Wasserman, pianist Bruce Hornsby, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and Black Crowes’ singer Chris Robinson, and in 2008 he performed in two Deadheads for Obama concerts. To the delight of his fans, this stop in Phoenix will feature Weir with his band RatDog (Jeff Chimenti, Steve Kimock, Jay Lane, Robin Sylvester and Rob Wasserman). JERSEY BOYS, THE TONY AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL Opening Tuesday, July 29th at ASU Gammage One of Broadway’s biggest success stories takes you behind the music of the legendary Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to follow the rags-to-rockto-riches tale of four blue-collar kids who work their way from the streets of Newark, New Jersey to the dizzying heights of pop stardom. Although Valli and his cohorts Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi are famed for their legendary harmonies, things didn’t always go so smoothly among them off stage. This acclaimed, Tony Awardwinning show spotlights the groundbreaking group’s hit songs “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and more. ASU Gammage 1200 S. ‘Third Person’

‘Begin Again’

‘Life Itself’

Mark Ruffalo plays a dejected music industry executive who forms a bond with a young singersongwriter (Keira Knightley) new to Manhattan. (R - 101 minutes)

Filmmaker Steve James recounts the inspiring and entertaining life of world-renowned film critic and social commentator Roger Ebert. (R - 112 minutes)

Stan: Writer/director John Carney, who’s 2006 film ‘Once’ was an outstanding blend of story and music, once again delivers a very moving story with just the right amount of solid character nuances with the song/music performance sequences easily blending together for a very poignant film. Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley’s performances tug at our hearts and our minds for personal reflections in our own lives.

Joseph: During its best moments, “Life Itself” is more than just an overview of Roger Ebert’s life; it becomes an engaging examination of film criticism that addresses its roots, its advantages, its deficiencies and its future. The new documentary also becomes a celebration of life, an observation about death and any number of other things that speak to each individual viewer.

Herb Stratford’s perspective on film is story first. Herb watches thousands of films a year as he programs the Napa Valley film fest in Napa, CA. Melissa McCarthy plays a woman who, after losing her job and learning that her husband has been unfaithful, hits the road with her profane, hard-drinking grandmother (Susan Sarandon). (R - 96 minutes) Joseph: “Tammy” is missing the two absolutely essential elements of comedy - surprise and spontaneity. Without these, you may as well just be watching a boorish woman run

Writer/director Paul Haggis tells three stories of love, passion, trust and betrayal that play out in New York, Paris and Rome; three couples who appear to have nothing related but share deep commonalities lovers and estranged spouses, children lost and found. (R - 137 minutes) Stan: Very fond of the ‘trilogy style of interconnected’ stories of writer/director Paul Haggis, most notably the multiple Oscar® and awards winner ‘Crash’ (2004), his latest ‘Third Person’ doesn’t disappoint. Each of the stories moved this reviewer as the essence of relationships are laid bare, and, serves to affirm or reaffirm our own ideals. A suggestion when viewing: as the stories unfold simply go along for the ride of your life. Herb: Director Paul Haggis constructs an elaborate interwoven tale of different relationships in different cities at different points. The film’s stellar cast does a good job with the weighty subject matter of relationships on the rocks, regret and loss.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Filmmakers Faith Conroy and Jim Wilson (‘50 to 1’) By Joseph J. Airdo In “50 to 1,” a misfit group of New Mexico cowboys find themselves on the journey of a lifetime when their crooked-footed racehorse qualifies for the Kentucky Derby. They face a series of mishaps on their way to Churchill Downs, becoming the ultimate underdogs in a final showdown with the world’s racing elite.

cross-country to Kentucky. It is a bit of a class system film as well. They took on the bluebloods of Kentucky and kicked their [butt]. It is a really inspiring picture. There is no insight that you have to have into horseracing to understand this movie. These are guys who are down on their luck and have a dream. That is what it is all about.” - Jim Wilson

“‘50 to 1’ is a true-life story that took place in 2009 - just 5 years ago. This unheralded racehorse named Mine That Bird won the Kentucky Derby. It was the most amazing race that I have ever seen. I have owned horses for 25 years in Los Angeles, raced around the world, made documentaries on racing and all kinds of movies but I have never seen a race quite like this. “This is really about underdogs making it and trailering their horse

“You will be overcome with emotion. This incredible race that you see just takes you away. It is uplifting and you don’t get that very often anymore. We wanted something that was different; something that people could actually sit down and be entertained - not offended or upset or have something twisted happening in front of them. This is just a great, feel-good family film.

“It is about, as they say in the movie, getting out there and taking chances. It is about following something even when everybody tells you that you are a fool. You go out there and do it anyway because this is what you

want and this what you believe in and you are not going to give up your dream. That is what this movie is about. It really is. It has got a horseracing backdrop but it is about that message.” - Faith Conroy

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Writer/Director Michael Tully (‘Ping Pong Summer’) By Joseph J. Airdo Conte plays a shy teenager who, during his family’s 1985 summer vacation makes a new best friend, experiences his first real crush, becomes the target of rich local bullies and finds an unexpected mentor in his outcast next-door neighbor.

In “Ping Pong Summer,” Marcello

“I was born with a paddle in my hand. No, that’s not true. But I loved ping-pong from an early age. When I was growing up in the 80’s, I wasn’t a cinephile. So I wasn’t watching art films and documentaries and all of that stuff. I was going to the local video store and renting VHS’s of ‘Summer Rental’ and ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ - not even ‘The

Karate Kid’ but the knockoffs like ‘No Retreat, No Surrender’ and stuff like that.

movies in a way but it takes itself very seriously and earnestly. So it is a weird alchemy.

“So what I wanted to do was make a movie that was kind of a love letter and a tribute to my own upbringing - my own normal, middle-class, not dangerous upbringing - and insert that into the movies that I loved unironically as a kid. When you describe it, it sounds formulaic but my hope is that we did some things differently that will make it really specific and entertaining for folks. I hope that people appreciate its earnestness because it is rooted in a love of movies that maybe you would call bad movies. It is a tribute to bad

“But I also hope that people just sit back and enjoy a movie that is a little more leisurely paced. The edits back in 1985 movies weren’t as fast as they are now and that was one thing we made it a point to do. And, ultimately, I hope that people will get out of the movie theater and want to go dig in their crates, pull out their old rap tapes from the 80’s and their old ping pong paddles and go out in their garage or their basement and fire up some ping pong.” - Michael Tully

A Day with Snoopy and Friends at Knott’s Berry Farm Snoopy and the Peanuts gang have been delighting fans for decades. Camp Snoopy at Knott’s Berry Farm (in Buena Park, CA) allows guests to step inside the world of Peanuts through High Sierra fun; a land of rides and themed attractions. The five-acre section of the park opened on July 1, 1983 and was the first of its kind in many ways. The Knott family along with creator Charles Schulz wanted “a carefree place where nature, adventure and imagination come to life.” The newly “refreshed” area carries on that legacy and offers over a dozen rides, a stage show and an area dedicated to meeting characters in scenes straight out of the comic strip.

ride, narrated by Linus takes a scenic journey under thrilling roller coasters, past boysenberry plants and through scenes of camp-like activities. You will see Charlie and Sally Brown canoeing on the lake and Snoopy’s brother Spike chasing tumbleweeds in the desert. Once the ride is over, you’ll want “s’more” (pun intended).

from a restored farm truck located in the new picnic area near “Mount Charlie Brown.” Sensible snacks can be found in the candy store (amidst the sugary treats).

Make sure to stop and have your photo taken with your favorite Peanuts character. A new meet and greet area allows you to crawl in Snoopy’s dog house, sit on Sally Brown’s chair, or grab Charlie Brown’s baseball bat. They will be more than happy to take a “selfie” with you! The gang does take a 15-minute break from picture taking to hop on stage and perform an upbeat all-ages show. The ability to sit for a few minutes is a welcome reprieve. “Charlie Brown’s Happy Campers” runs daily though the end of summer. Sure, you may want a churro, but fresh fruit and sandwiches are also available

Knott’s has managed to refresh an already charming area of the park with exciting detail. Plan a trip to “Camp” in the middle of Southern California! Next Week: The Restored Calico Mine Ride at Knott’s Berry Farm Upcoming: Despicable Me: Minion Mayhem at Universal Studios

Any cooking show where the grand prize is a giant golden Spork and $1,000 has a sense of humor. Clearly these contestants are not vying for the James Beard Foundation Award. MTV’s latest, “Snack-Off’ premiering Thursday, July 10, features untrained cooks using ingredients that include jellybeans and waffles. Essentially, these are dishes that would satisfy most college students with the munchies. It’s not serious food, yet one of the chefs, Jason Quinn, is quite serious about food. “The one issue about doing the show for me is I am in this tradition, my ideal scenario is to be a chef, who makes great food and uses ultra premium ingredients,” Quinn says. “What I am worried about with the show is, will I be labeled as a junk food chef?” He’s a self-trained chef and chats while buying lobsters at an Asian market for his Santa Ana restaurant, Playground. “It is one of those things I can buy through my distributor for $12 a pound, or go to an Asian market for $6.99,” he says. “Snack-Off is the worst cooking show ever made, but the most hilarious cooking show ever made,” Quinn says. “As far as being about food, it is terrible. But it is a parody. (Host) Eddie Huang pulled me aside to say, ‘This isn’t ‘Iron Chef,’ it is a parody.’ ”

the industry came from? Fortunately, but not surprisingly, I have an opinion. It is one we have discussed before in this column, but one that bears repeating.

Not everybody has the bank account to support that kind of habit for long. And for those of you that think that a brewery could lower their prices if that was all they were producing, I say…exactly the opposite. Many of

to the basics. Craft beer is no different.

There have been several recent articles calling into question the need for a brewery to have a flagship brand. I have even heard people suggest that all craft breweries should brew nothing but high end, special release items. Clearly this is absurd for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, there is a limit to how many $10-$30 bottles of beer people will purchase.

these breweries are able to produce and sell their specialty releases at, or even below, break-even because of the success of their flagship brands. If they had to recoup all expenses in running a brewery through the sales of limited release beers, then beer costs would probably double.

exist…a balance that can be achieved between flagship and specialties? I would suggest the latter must be true in order for craft beer to survive and continue to flourish.

Most of the time the phrase implies that some sort of problem has arisen and getting back to the basics means let’s start over and do it right. Clearly that is not the case with the craft beer industry. So why is it important now to get back to the basics to re-learn, and more importantly, understand where

The main reason for this is that it is not the hardcore beer geeks that are responsible for the growth of craft

...Continued from page 26 beer. A growth that is annually in the double digits. Lest we ruffle any feathers, the hardcore beer geeks should get credit for being early adopters and influencers of craft beer… and certainly do their share to build a community’s craft culture. But the real success of craft beer lies in the conversion of new drinkers. Some come from the American Premium Lager camp, looking for bigger flavors; while others come from the wine drinking community, looking for the big flavors they already know but with a little less alcohol or at a lower cost. In fact, the craft beer industry gained many wine consumers during the Great Recession of 2008 (and 2009 and 2010…) when wine drinkers realized that they could still get full flavored beverages, but instead of paying $12 per glass, they could do it at $5 per glass just by switching to beer. I think we all realize that the first step to gaining a new, regular consumer is getting them to try the product. Craft beer is no different. So are all these new consumers out searching for Dark Lord or Canadian Breakfast Stout? No, they are reaching out to the flagship brands…the brands they can find at the bars and restaurants they frequent, as well as the grocery stores where they shop. These are the people that are raising the industry to new heights with their discovery of craft beer. WWW.GRANDCANYONBREWERY.COM

It should come as no surprise then that most people come to craft beer through various flagship brands. Many of these are brands that the beer snob

would look down on. I would be willing to bet that the single biggest transition or gateway beer is probably Blue Moon. It is safe to say that without Blue Moon, there would be a lot less craft beer drinkers in the world. If you took away brands like New Belgium Fat Tire, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Anchor Steam, that number would drop even further. Of course you will have some people that will make the inevitable discovery of fuller flavored beer without ever touching a flagship brand. Just as you will have some brewers that will be successful without brewing a flagship beer. However, these are the exceptions, not the rule. At the end of the day, we all get to drink craft beer because people took a risk and created a flagship brand to back a company that they were just getting started. They needed a brand that would sell well enough to create the cash flow needed to build the company, and maybe to experiment with beers that had even more flavor. New Belgium is the classic example of this. Don’t think for one minute that a brewery could create the kind of brewery that produces La Folie and the rest of the Lips of Faith series, without first getting their feet under them with Fat Tire. Since we are getting back to basics, it would be appropriate for a journalist to end an article with a nice closing paragraph tying everything together. Well, if you ever meet a journalist, make sure you tell him or her that. Me…I’m just going to tell you that I look forward to my next beer, no matter what it is.

#1 In an experiment conducted in 2001 at the University of Bordeaux, every one of the 54 undergraduates in wine making and tasting thought they were tasting a red wine while it was actually a dyed white wine. Furthermore, when comparing identical wine of different prices, experts raved about the expensive wine while panning the cheap wine #2 In 1976, there was a wine tasting in Paris that blindly compared Californian wines to French wines. California won and the lone reporter covering the event was blacklisted for reporting it.

#3 A 2005 study found that the scores of “wine experts” are essentially meaningless, revealing that a typical judge’s scoring of a wine varied by plus/minus four points over three blind tastings poured from the same bottle.

Halle Berry returns from space with a surprise in ‘Extant’

Halle Berry stars in the premiere of the sci-fithriller series “Extant” Wednesday on CBS.

Halle Berry doesn’t say “yes” to television work every day, but Steven Spielberg is a powerful lure. The Oscar-winning actress stars in the executive producer’s home-screen latest project as CBS debuts the scifi thriller series “Extant” Wednesday, July 9. No one connected to the show seems to mind any thematic references to last year’s Oscar-winning movie “Gravity” as Berry plays another woman in space, this one newly returned home from a yearlong solo mission ... but with a very unexpected development. She discovers she’s pregnant, and if she’s confounded by the news, so are loved ones including her husband (Goran Visnjic, “ER”) and a doctor friend (Camryn Manheim, “The Practice”). Also factoring into the story is the married couple’s humanoid son (Pierce Gagnon), who’s at the crux of a scientific debate over what constitutes a soul. Michael O’Neill (“Bates Motel”), Hiroyuki Sanada, Annie Wersching (“24”) and Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer (“The Newsroom”) are among other “Extant” cast members. “I’m a fan of sci-fi, but I’m even more a fan of Steven Spielberg sci-fi, which is more supernatural,” Berry explains. “I love that this show is rooted solidly in strong characters before you get into the otherworldly aspects. You first

36

get to know this family, and I think it’s a beautiful set-up for what’s to come as we get further and further into the series.” Indeed, “Extant” is based on Earth for a number of its initial scenes before the first flashback-cued sighting of a space station. Berry deems her character, Molly, “an everyday woman. Sure, she has an extraordinary job – I’m not suggesting that people go into space in a pedestrian way – but at the end of the day, she’s fighting for what every woman would fight for, and that’s her baby. No matter what that is, it’s hers, and it’s part of her.” “Extant” was created by another of the series’ executive producers, Mickey Fisher, who had written the pilot simply on spec. He acknowledges that the success Spielberg, his Amblin Television firm and CBS had with “Under the Dome” last summer “really opened the door for us. I’d carried the idea around in my head in different versions; at one point, it was going to be a one-person play. Then about three years ago, I moved out to L.A. go try to break into TV, and I did the thing they always tell you to do as a writer: ‘Write the show that you would want to watch.’ ” Enter Spielberg, who became a patron of “Extant” early on. “Even just the possibility that he would read it at all,” Fisher reflects, “that the most successful

filmmaker of all time was going to read something I wrote, that in and of itself is a surreal thought. Then to hear that he liked it and that it was going forward ... I tell people that I sat and stared at a wall for 15 minutes, trying to wrap my head around it.” The executive producers of “Extant” also came to include showrunner Greg Walker, a veteran of series including “Vegas” and “The X-Files.” He reasons, “We learned a lot from watching Steven Spielberg as kids. All those movies have family elements that are deeply embedded in the mythology of the storytelling. Its like playing with a really great tennis player when we pitch him ideas; if you hit a really good, hard shot, he’ll return it and elevate your game.” The fact that “Extant” tackles big issues within a science-fiction wrapping was another major appeal for Berry. “That’s one of the reasons I love being a part of the ‘X-Men’ movie series as well,“ she notes. “It puts those social questions out there. This one addresses nature vs. nurture, and what it is to be human – can we teach a machine to have human qualities and to love? This show is so layered, and not just in being set 30 years in the future. It deals with issues we face today, for sure.” (An interesting note: Though the end credits on broadcast series now tend to fly by at breakneck speed, eagle-

eyed viewers may notice a Malia Obama listed as an “Extant” production assistant. For anyone who might wonder, yes, it is that Malia Obama.) “Extant” is not Berry’s first television series, though one has to go back quite a way for that. It was “Living Dolls,” a 1989 ABC spinoff of “Who’s the Boss?” about young fashion models. After establishing her film stardom, she returned to TV in the HBO drama “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge” (which earned her an Emmy, among many other awards) and the Oprah Winfreybacked ABC projects “The Wedding” and “Their Eyes Were Watching God.” “To me, some of the best writing is on television,” Berry maintains, “and I love the turns that it’s taken. I also love that it’s quickly becoming no division between film actors and TV actors. It’s becoming OK to go wherever the good writing is, wherever the great characters and storytelling are ... and if truth be told, it’s becoming a lot easier for people to see your work on television.” The owner of a best actress Oscar for 2001’s “Monster’s Ball,” Berry calls the movie world “a hazy place to me right now. It’s hard to understand which films are able to get made, and what moviegoers who actually go out and buy tickets really want to see. I think television is becoming an important medium for actors who just want to work. And do good work.”

Stacy Lewis: girl on fire

In women’s golf, there is no Tiger Woods; there is no single player who when on the golf course commands the attention of the entire media and fan base that Woods does. That, perhaps, could be a good thing for the talented women of the LPGA tour, who will compete in their version of the British Open Thursday through Sunday, July 1013 (on ESPN), at the Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England. Stacy Lewis, however, is one player who may put a little pressure on herself to repeat as British Open champ. So far, in 2014 Lewis is once again on a roll, having won the North Texas LPGA Shootout in early May and the ShopRite LPGA Classic a month later. These victories place Lewis at the top of the Rolex Women’s World Cup rankings.

Stacy Lewis

Lewis would like nothing more than to find her name at the top of that same list when the LPGA wraps up its schedule in November. Such an achievement would make her the first American women’s golfer to achieve that year-end feat since it began in 2006. This is Lewis’ second stint at the top of the hill, having been ranked No. 1 for four weeks in 2013. Not bad for the Toledo, Ohio, native who grew up in the Houston area and overcame scoliosis as a child. An All-American at the University of Arkansas, her amateur career was as decorated as they come. Since turning professional in 2008, she’s been one of the top names in the LPGA, racking up 10 wins and two majors.

FAMILY

“The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie”

THURSDAY The Picture of Dorian Gray 3 p.m. on TCM You thought the book was freaky? Hurd Hatfield and George Sanders star in this 1945 adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s elegant horror yarn of a handsome young man who makes an infernal bargain to retain his good looks — although a painting of him starts to reflect the inner rot of his soul. Supporting actress Angela Lansbury snagged an Oscar nomination; Donna Reed and Peter Lawford also co-star.

FRIDAY Alice in Wonderland 3 p.m. on FAM There still can be new life in old stories, as the Disney organization and director Tim Burton prove again with this effective, liveaction take on the Lewis Carroll classic. Mia Wasikowska plays Alice as a teenager who bolts from a marriage proposal and tumbles down a rabbit hole into a wondrous land where she encounters such characters as the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), the evil Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and the much nicer White Queen (Anne Hathaway).

AnnaSophia Robb (“Bridge to Terabithia”) and Alexander Ludwig play teenagers with special abilities that quickly become evident to the cabbie (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) they enlist to help them get away from government forces. The special effects are much improved from the time when the central roles belonged to Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who have cameos here.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring 9 a.m. on TNT In director Peter Jackson’s first installment of the epic trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, Frodo the hobbit (Elijah Wood) is enlisted to help the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen). Evil forces are gathering to control the land, and Frodo is given a magic ring, which he must destroy. He is accompanied on his journey by a noble assortment of companions. Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd and Dominic Monaghan co-star.

Hook 3 p.m. on BBC-A Dustin Hoffman stars as the villainous Capt. James Hook, who kidnaps the children of the grown-up Peter Pan, in this 1991 Steven Spielberg production based on the story by Sir James M. Barrie. The cast includes Robin Williams (Peter), Glenn Close (a pirate) and Julia Roberts (Tinkerbell).

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 1 p.m. on NICK The yellow sponge’s oceanic world made it to the big screen in this 2004 feature film. When King Neptune’s crown is stolen, SpongeBob and Patrick leave Bikini Bottom and head for Shell City to retrieve it. There’s more than just the headgear at stake: Mr. Krabs has been accused of being the thief. Voice talent includes Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke, Clancy Brown, Scarlett Johansson and Jeffrey Tambor, with a cameo by David Hasselhoff.

WEDNESDAY Soul Surfer 7 a.m. on FX

PRESENTED BY

“Jumanji”

In 2003, teen surfer Bethany Hamilton made international headlines in a tragic way when she lost her left arm to a tiger shark. Her story is recounted in this 2011 drama, based on her own book, that doesn’t stint in re-creating the attack. AnnaSophia Robb (“Bridge to Terabithia”) does a fine job in the central role, with strong backing from Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid as Bethany’s parents. Kevin Sorbo and music’s Carrie Underwood also appear.

A Bug’s Life 10:30 a.m. on DISN Created by Pixar, the computer-animation studio that also teamed with Disney on “Toy Story,” this 1998 fantasy focuses on an epic battle between brave ants and invading grasshoppers. Among the celebrities lending their voices are Dave Foley (“NewsRadio”), David Hyde Pierce (“Frasier”), Kevin Spacey, Julia LouisDreyfus (“Seinfeld”) and Phyllis Diller.

SATURDAY Jumanji 6:30 p.m. on FAM Two children (Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce) discover a mysterious board game in their new home’s attic. They begin to play, only to discover each roll unleashes terrifying consequences. When a jungleravaged man (Robin Williams) pops out of the game, they learn he was trapped in another world during a roll of the dice 20 years earlier. They must finish the game he started to undo all the damage and put things right. Bonnie Hunt and Bebe Neuwirth also star.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”

SUNDAY Race to Witch Mountain 9 a.m. on FAM A couple of 1970s Disney fantasies get an update in this enjoyable adventure.

of “AmericA’S GoT TAlenT” On nBC You can be biting and have no compunctions about speaking your mind, yet you are very gentle with the people auditioning for this. Why?

You can provoke people to just be mean. Over the last two seasons, it has been so accepting. They know they are safe here. We change people’s careers – Collins Key opening for Demi Lovato. There are a lot of strange, fun, weird acts. Does that remain fun for you?

Where else could you go? We are like a beacon of light. Where do these people go? “The Gong Show” never took the talent seriously. This is network TV. This will survive that format because of variety.

The Grammy Awards were introduced to counter the threat of rock music. In the late 1950s, a group of record executives were alarmed by the explosive success of rock ‘n roll, considering it a threat to “quality” music.

Boomrat Launch party, EDM Biz Conferences and Expo, a media dinner provided by the LIGHT group at Mandalay Bay, and of course, the Grand Slam of festivals, EDC Las Vegas - all occurred June 18th-23rd. Electric Daisy Carnival: which by now, is a house hold name, drew a sold out show of 400,000 fans over a course of 3 dusk till dawn days. This past year, we here at AZ Weekly have covered EDC Puerto Rico, Orlando, and New York, but nothing could prepare us for Las Vegas. The roaring energy kicked off on day one as we entered the gates. As the sun set, the thousands of taxis, shuttles, and cars poured in, filling every crevice of the landscape that was, EDC. Carnival rides lined the interior of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, performers dazzled onlookers as they walked by on stilts, and thumping beats filled your chest from all angles. For 12 hours a day, three days in a row, people got an escape. Whether it was from student loans, your boss at work, or any stresses that one might have, those problems didn’t exist. What did exist was an experience on a magnitude so high, you had to be there to understand.

At the main stage named ‘Kinetic’ the design resembled a cathedral with two massive owls with a grand wing span. Between every Dj transition, spectators were delighted to a theatric show on the stage through the use of LED panels, laser shows, pyrotechnics, water fountains (think Bellagio) and of course, an incredible firework display. The diversity of stages provided attendees a variety of music, so there was something for everyone. We came across a woman who had gone to EDC 6 times in a row, when I asked her why does she continue to go every year, she responded, “I love the progression the event itself has gone through. The music, the stages, and the lifelong friendships that are formed here, it will keep me coming back.” While EDM receives its due credit with the music now charting on Top 40 radio, the scene itself can be diffused by bad media publicity just as the rock and roll age came to be in the 70’s. The new generation of festival goers are a part of a movement that not much know about and onlookers are quick to judge based on attendees flashy outfits and unfortunate publicity of stimulants that give the rave scene a discerning image. Truth be told,

these massive festivals are booming and are popping up across the globe. The question is why? The answer lies within us. As the days go by, more and more people save up to get away and escape from the bad news we see every day on TV or hear about through social media. Music has always been about expression. The connection between humans through music is unparalleled. YouTubing ‘EDC’ will show you just how connected music brings us together. As 2014 EDC Las Vegas came to a close, we walked out as the sun rose, with the sunlight hitting our glimmering eyes and watching people dance off in the distance, it was simple to appreciate why this event sold out before any artist announcement ever occurred; because no matter what happens in the world, we have each other and we can put trust in one another. Together in unity, music bonds all of us, no matter what genre of music you’re into. If you have not had the opportunity to go to EDC, consider it, as it will probably be one of the most fun things you can do in your lifetime.
