Weir has participated in various reformations with Grateful Dead members, such as stints as The Other Ones and The Dead. Weir has also collaborated in recording and on stage performances with Bob Dylan, bassist Rob Wasserman, pianist Bruce Hornsby, saxophonist Branford Marsalis and Black Crowes’ singer Chris Robinson, and in 2008 he performed in two Deadheads for Obama concerts. To the delight of his fans, this stop in Phoenix will feature Weir with his band RatDog (Jeff Chimenti, Steve Kimock, Jay Lane, Robin Sylvester and Rob Wasserman). One of Broadway’s biggest success stories takes you behind the music of the legendary Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to follow the rags-torock-to-riches tale of four blue-collar kids who work their way from the streets of Newark, New Jersey to the dizzying heights of pop stardom. Although Valli and his cohorts Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi are famed for their legendary harmonies, things didn’t always go so smoothly among them off stage. This acclaimed, Tony Award-winning show spotlights the ground-breaking group’s hit songs “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and more. ASU Gammage 1200 S. oF “MyStery GirlS” on ABC FAmIly “Mystery Girls” appeared to be on a fast track at ABC Family from the time the idea first was announced. Did it seem that way from your perspective?

By JacqueLine cuTLer

It came together so easily that it almost felt like it was too easy. Everything just worked out the way it was supposed to, with the script and the network and the casting. Doing the pilot, we were done by 9:30 on filming night, and it was seamless ... like we’d been doing it forever. And it’s stayed that way ever since we started.

‘Last Tango in Halifax’ Most TV shows concentrate on fashion for the young. Granted super skinny jeans, tank tops and shorts look far better on slim, supple bodies, but let’s face it, people continue to dress, some very well, as they age. For a primer on people in their 70s looking terrific, watch the gentle and very sweet drama, “Last Tango in Anne Reid and Halifax,” returning for Season 2 Sunday, June 29, on PBS Derek Jacobi (check local listings). Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid play Alan and Ceila, who fall in love again after being childhood sweethearts and separated for decades. Besides that he is a gentleman and she a lady, they want to look their best for each other during their courtship. “What I wanted to achieve with the overall feeling was real life, a working wardrobe, not too stylized,” says Ian Holmes, costume designer. “Something that looks that someone would wear on a day-to-day basis.”

Are the opening credits of “Mystery Girls” meant to evoke “Charlie’s Angels,” which was one of the biggest hits produced by your father, Aaron Spelling?

Definitely. I obviously was very inspired by all of my dad’s shows, and we really wanted to do “flashbacks” to our supposed “old show,” so we loved doing that. We love putting on wigs and heels.

JOSEPH J. AIRDO

‘Korengal’

‘Violette’

“Korengal” picks up where “Restrepo” left off - the same men, the same valley, the same commanders, but a very different look at the experience of war. (R 90 minutes)

Emmanuelle Devos and Sandrine Kiberlain play women who begin an intense relationship that lasts throughout their lives - a relationship based on the quest for freedom. (NR - 132 minutes)

Stan: Having experienced war, first hand, as a Vietnam veteran, the futility of winning and at what price is always an underlying factor. This continuation of directors Tim Hetherington’s and Sebastian Junger’s documentary ‘Restrepo’ (2010) on the Afghanistan war and the Korengal Valley, is unnerving as it is informative on the mindset of soldiers in combat.

Stan: As often noted, the catalysts for living and the pursuit of our ambitions come from various life experiences. And so it is for the central character French novelist Violette Leduc who’s story is the subject of this French language biographical drama. Dark, foreboding, and often tragic, it serves to inspire the thought of the human will and surviving the adversities of life.

Herb: If you’re a fan of directors Tim Hetherington’s and Sebastian Junger’s excellent doc “Restrepo,” then this might be of some interest to you, but I found it to be more of a rehash of that earlier film without a clear narrative focus. It seems like we’ve seen it before, and this doesn’t add much to the story. Do yourself a favor and watch “Restrepo” again instead.

By Stan Robinson A period film is a tall challenge for any filmmaker who has a story to tell that is set in the past. The time is the 1960s and yes, it is the time of my own youth as a teen in high school and the music I grew up with. ‘Jersey Boys’ is the story of four young men from the wrong side of the tracks

in New Jersey who came together to form the iconic 1960s rock group ‘The Four Seasons’. The film presents the code of honor learned in the streets of their native New Jersey that got them through a multitude of challenges: gambling debts, Mafia threats and family disasters. ‘Jersey Boys’ is a glimpse at the people behind a sound that has managed to endure for over

four decades in the hearts of the public. In the city of Kearny, New Jersey, Elm Street was transformed into a 1960s-era location for shooting, and, the man behind the music himself, Frankie Valli, who served as executive producer, was on set for the occasion.

Starring Vincent Piazza, John Lloyd Young, Steve Schirripa, Christopher Walken, Kathrine Narducci, Lou Volpe, and Johnny Cannizzaro. Produced & directed by Clint Eastwood; Executive Producer Frankie Valli; screenplay Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice. Warner Bros. release (R - 134 minutes)

‘Man Finds Food’

and viewers find less of the man

Adam Richman became famous as the guy who would eat what disgusted, terrified or vanquished others. That 5-pound hunk of meat, wrapped in bacon, battered-soaked, then deep-fried then smothered in fries and a cheesy sauce? He ate it, and with gusto. Richman could apparently eat it all. And it did catch up with him. In Travel Channel’s “Man Finds Food” debuting Wednesday, July 2, viewers learn about fun discoveries. First, though, they will notice a svelte Richman. He’s dropped about 100 pounds, eats clean and works out. He’s playing soccer and eating a strictly vegan diet, which Richman describes as, “amazing. It made me grow as a chef, made me learn more and play more with flavors. “Right now I am obsessing on veggie meats and proteins and making them work so that has been kind of groovy,” he says. “I have always had a soft spot for sushi.” Richman trained as a sushi chef. He also trained as an actor at Yale Drama School and is a peripatetic traveler, so creating television about new places is perfect for him. “ ‘Man Finds Food’ is about the off the beaten track restaurants and restaurants that have hidden items only available to those in the know,” he says. On the show, he finds places that look like the wrong end of a warehouse but open up into lovely bistros. Richman is particularly thrilled with the unexpected such as finding delicious food in a Hawaiian bowling alley.

DAY DRINKING I’ve always loved the drinking songs of Tom T. Hall. The classic, to me anyway, is “I Like Beer”. That song gets right to the point and addresses the situation head on. Another favorite from Mr. Hall is “Day Drinking”, a story about a couple of guys out on the town since 9:30 or 10:00 that morning. Not only that, but they are regulars at spending the daytime hours in bars telling the waitress how they won the war. Thinking about that song, along with a couple of afternoon beers, it occurred to me that Phoenix is a town with some great day drinking bars. Bars that are at least as much fun during

the day as they are at night, some might be more so. We have plenty of them, so let’s focus on the ones that feature great craft beer.

Last time we looked at some great bars, so let’s recap those, and then add some other fine ones to the mix. Right at the top of the list has to be TT Roadhouse. Located on 68th Street, just north of Thomas in Scottsdale, this tiny bar is real easy to drive right by. Once you get in there, it is an enchanted world. Plenty of great craft and an amazing jukebox that you can have all to yourself during daylight hours. Sun Up Brewery at 322 E.

Camelback is on our list. A small bar and dining area gives way to a courtyard which seems comfortable even during the worst of the summer, and beyond that, the brewery building which also has a large open space filled with tables, and another bar. Brewmaster Uwe Boer can frequently be seen through the glass working hard on his amazing beers. Papago Brewing at Scottsdale and McDowell has a nice, relaxed feel during the day, with plenty of great beer, great food and always pleasant, knowledgeable service. If you ever had a drink in Tempe, you

probably know the Yucca Tap Room, but did you know that they now have some great beer there? And you may think that Yucca is all about great bands, and it is. Still, sitting there during the day time nursing a Bell’s Oberon or a Left Hand Milk Stout poured off the nitrogen faucet makes for a relaxing afternoon. With a 6:00 AM Happy Hour, how can you go wrong? On 7th Street at Sheridan, look for The Main Ingredient. Matt Diamond, who has been behind the scenes at many great bars and restaurants in Phoenix, steps out front to present his version of a great bar. With a patio as big as the inside, a top notch staff, and incredible taps and bottles, how can you go wrong? Couple that with fantastic food and you can let the day run right in to the evening. If you need anything else… Happy Hour runs all day until about 6:00 PM. If wine is more your thing, take a trip to Cave Creek and try out Brix Wines at Cave Creek Road and Tom Darlington. This is one of those places where you walk in an you are an instant regular. Brix is a fine place to while away an afternoon. A wonderful selection of wines, an owner who will talk sports, country music, politics or just about anything else that interests you and a diverse clientele make this a great stop. On any given day, you might find yourself sitting next to the guitar player from one of the hot local bands, a professional bull rider, or any of the other fascinating people you might meet there. Only three handles but it is one of those places where an afternoon can pass by pretty quickly.

Boulders on Broadway makes for a nice stop on any day drinking tour. Continued On Page 26...

...Continued from page 24

Pop in for lunch and you will already see patrons enjoying some fine beers. Plenty of rotating handles and just enough mainstays gives anybody a good reason to stop in regularly. Since the last time we did this, Tempe has gained some great day drinking locations. First on that list has to be World of Beer. Located at 6th Street and Mill Avenue, World of Beer is a playland for the beer lover. 58 handles and 500 bottles guarantees that you will always find something you like. Add to that a knowledgeable staff along with an open feeling and you will be running out to add more money to the meter on a regular basis. You can almost always count on a couple of brewery reps or other industry people stopping in during the day, so if you have questions about your favorite beers, you might have experts on hand to answer them. World of Beer also has a Gilbert loction. Right down the street from World of Beer, is Handlebar and Grill. This bike and pet friendly bar has the feel of a European small town bar. Enjoy the big patio when the weather is right and choose from all kinds of great beers. Hungry? Try one of their amazing brats for just the right snack or lunch.

Any of the three Mellow Mushroom locations makes for great day drinking. Check them out at Happy Valley and I-17, Tempe or CityNorth next to Desert Ridge. Have a pizza and several great beers. The CityNorth location frequently starts events at 3:00 PM to appeal to the day drinking crowd.

O.H.S.O. Nano Brewery at 4900 East Indian School has a great selection of beers, a nice front patio, fantastic food and a great staff. Sounds like a perfect recipe for day drinking. Enjoy the bar or front patio area, or sit towards the back and watch the nano brewery in operation. Not all the beers are from the brewery, in fact, most are not. But the emphasis on local beer is a key to making this an afternoon gathering spot. Technically, I am not sure you can day drink on the weekends, but their back patio really kicks it up a notch on Saturday and Sunday; and their brunch is outstanding. Try their new location in North Scottsdale as well. Patios are great fun and one of the best is at Brat Haus in Scottsdale. Gourmet Brats and a great beer selection is just the thing to complement the huge outdoor space at this location. Plenty to do and see out back, with the feel of a German Beer Garden, but if indoors is your thing, a comfortable bar with some other tables is a great place to belly up. Try the Krombacher in a boot if you really want the full service feel. There are plenty more places out there and we will cover some of those in our next day drinking column, which hopefully won’t take another three years. In the meantime, no matter when you have a beer, whether it’s a breakfast beer, a beer with lunch, an early afternoon, or starting the evening off, day drinking is a nice change of pace. Enjoy the places above and go for the good beer whenever you can.

A ‘Capitol Fourth’ star for all Seasons This year, an annual Independence Day celebration includes a Jersey boy. Frankie Valli – the singer who long has led pop music’s iconic Four Seasons – will be among the performers on the annual PBS special “A Capitol Fourth” Friday, July 4 (check local listings), from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. Emmy winner Tom Bergeron (“Dancing With the Stars,” “America’s Funniest Home Videos”) returns as host for the third consecutive year. “It’s exciting,” Valli says of the occasion. “It’s a great celebration for America, and for people to stop for a moment and realize what America really is – and how important it is to everything that goes on in the world. The sound of freedom comes from America; it was the place anybody who wanted to escape oppression thought about coming to.”

Tom Bergeron returns as host of the PBS holiday special “A Capitol Fourth” Friday (check local listings).

Valli hopes to express that thought during “A Capitol Fourth,” but he realizes “time may be of the essence.” Also set for the show are Patti LaBelle, Jordin Sparks, Michael McDonald, Sara Evans, Big Time Rush’s Kendall Schmidt and Broadway star Kelli O’Hara. Multiple Oscar winner John Williams will conduct a new arrangement of “The

Star Spangled Banner” on its 200th anniversary, and Jack Everly will lead the National Symphony Orchestra. Bergeron will take personal pleasure in presenting Valli on “A Capitol Fourth.” The amiable host says the two “coincidentally have been on the same flight from L.A. to New York and back a few times. I’ve had the chance to really chat with him at some length, and he’s such a great guy.” With the Clint Eastwooddirected movie version of “Jersey Boys” – the story of the Four Seasons -- now in theaters, it’s a big summer for Valli. “We have had an incredible career,” he reflects of the group that turned out “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Working My Way Back to You” and “December 1963 (Oh, What a Night)” among many other tunes. “We had hits in the ‘60s, ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s,” Valli notes, “and here we are, enjoying an enormous hit with a play going into its 10th year on Broadway, with six or seven companies around the world. How much more could anybody ask? Many of the things that have happened for us are things I never dreamed would be able to.”

Toy Story 3 8 p.m. on DISN There’s still plenty of life left in Buzz Lightyear and cowboy Woody, as Tim Allen and Tom Hanks reprise their voice roles in this delightful and quite affecting 2010 sequel to the earlier Disney-Pixar box-office smashes. With their owner, Andy, heading off to college, most of his toys — except Woody, who goes with him — get a new destination, a day care center where they aren’t treated too well. Michael Keaton gives voice to Ken, longtime boyfriend of Barbie.

FRIDAY Step Up 7 p.m. on FAM Not the greatest movie but far, far — did we say far? — superior to “Save the Last Dance 2,” this 2006 drama stars the goodlooking Channing Tatum (“She’s the Man”) as a street kid who gets in trouble with the law. Part of his sentence is to help out at an elite performing arts school, where he meets a young student (the marginally decent Jenna Dewan) who needs a dance partner — fast. Damaine Radcliff, Drew Sidora and Mario co-star.

Fishel) are now married with children, one of whom is daughter Riley (Rowan Blanchard), the “girl” of the title. As was the case with her dad from the 1993-2000 series, there plenty of life lessons to be learned. Sabrina Carpenter and August Maturo also star in this new comedy series.

SATURDAY The Parent Trap 7 p.m. on FAM Lindsay Lohan (“Life Size,” “Another World”) plays the Hayley Mills part — make that parts — in this 1998 remake of the 1961 family classic. Twins separated as babies meet at camp and decide to switch places in an effort to get their long-divorced parents (Dennis Quaid, Natasha Richardson) back together. But the clock is ticking: Dad is about to marry a thoroughly unlikable woman (Elaine Hendrix). Lisa Ann Walter also stars.

“Toy Story 3”

The Sandlot 10 p.m. on FAM Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) desperately wants to fit in with the other boys in his new neighborhood, but one thing stands in his way: They all play baseball, and he knows nothing about the sport. When the local star player (Mike Vitar) takes Scotty under his wing, Scotty learns the game and builds valuable friendships. This 1993 heartwarming story also stars Patrick Renna and Marty York.

SUNDAY Bruce Almighty 9 p.m. on FAM It had been a while since Jim Carrey had a hit when this clever 2003 comedy, reuniting him with “Ace Ventura” director Tom Shadyac, proved he still had the stuff to lure big audiences. He plays a

TV reporter who reacts badly to being passed over for an anchor job. Lamenting his lot in life, he gets a surprising gift from the |deity (Morgan Freeman): power over virtually everything. Jennifer Aniston plays Carrey’s girlfriend.

MONDAY Let It Shine 9 p.m. on DISN Teenage singing star Roxie Andrews’ record label sponsors a songwriting contest; her childhood friend Cyrus creates the winning entry, but his best buddy, Kris, gets credit for it — something Kris is in no hurry to correct. Coco Jones, Tyler James Williams (“Everybody Hates Chris”) and Trevor Jackson (“Eureka”) star in this tuneful family musical.

TUESDAY How Green Was My Valley 7:15 p.m. on TCM Five Academy Awards, including best picture, went to John Ford’s vivid, heartfelt 1941 adaptation of Richard Llewellyn’s novel about a Welsh mining family. Director Ford also won an Oscar, as did Donald Crisp for best supporting actor. The splendid cast also includes Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O’Hara and Roddy McDowall.

WEDNESDAY

Getting control of the guys in your life? There’s an app for that. That’s the premise of this new two-hour telepic that stars Zendaya (“Shake It Up”) as a teen who downloads a smartphone application that’s supposed to help her gain control of her unruly dog. But something happens to the device and now she finds she can make any man submit to her will. Adam DiMarco and William Ainscough also star in this family-friendly comedy directed by Peter DeLuise.

Doctor Dolittle 6:45 p.m. on TCM Rex Harrison plays Dr. Dolittle, a gentle soul in the Victorian era who prefers talking to animals rather than humans. This 1967 fantasy-musical garnered Oscars for best song and special visual effects. Adapted from Hugh Lofting’s stories, the film also stars Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newley, Richard Attenborough and Geoffrey Holder.

Girl Meets World 9:45 p.m. on DISN “Boy Meets World” characters Cory and Topanga Matthews (Ben Savage, Danielle
