HOLIDAY ARTS! It’s a Wee Winter Wonderland at The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures (November 26 through January 6). Enjoy the museum decorated for the season including more than a dozen miniatures that will depict holiday traditions in different eras and around the world such as Shogatsu in Japan, Kwaanza, a German Christmas in the 1800s, southwestern festivities, a 1930’s New Year and more. Be sure to check the online calendar for a schedule of musical performances and craft projects for children that are included with museum admission.

Tucson Jazz Society It’s almost time to ring in the New Year of 2014, and the Tucson Jazz Society will celebrate in style during their 8th Annual New Year’s Eve Gala. The evening starts with The Big Band Sounds of the Tucson Jazz Orchestra, The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, stars of “Riverwalk Jazz” on NPR and XM, and George Howard’s Motown Rhythm and Blue’s Show. It also includes a fantastic gourmet dinner feast, and a midnight New Year’s champagne toast at the newly renovated Westin La Paloma Resort and Spa. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band, stars of the Riverwalk Jazz Program, nationally broadcast on NPR and XM Radio, is renowned worldwide for playing the classic jazz associated with King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke, among others, plus music by great American composers such as Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Irving Berlin. The band has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap Farm, Austin City Limits and at festivals and concerts across the U.S. and Latin America. The Tucson Jazz Orchestra is a long standing favorite in Tucson, and is reunited after several years for this event. Directed by Tucson Jazz Legend Jeff Haskell, the TJO is made up of the cream of the crop of Tucson’s pro jazz musicians. Blues Hall of Famer, George Howard, the GHB Girls and horn section will be blasting out some of Motown’s finest hits along with the R&B hits we grew up with. A great way to wrap up the evening and ring in the New Year! More info: tucsonjazz.org; 520-9031265

Tucson Guitar Society The Tucson Guitar Society International Series continues with five outstanding concerts. This year’s Guitar Foundation of America Competition winner, Rovshan Mamedkuliev of Russia will perform (January 23). This competition is widely considered to be one of the most important for classical guitar, and the winners are uniformly excellent. Rene Izquierdo of Cuba comes to Tucson fresh from his Carnegie Hall appearance. He is one of the most musical players on the concert tour today, and he will play love songs with soprano Maria Jette (February 6) as part of the Second Tucson Desert Song Festival – a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Grammy-Award winning David Russell of Scotland and Spain returns to Tucson to play two concerts (March 1 and 2). Russell is a superb musician who earns the highest praise from critics and audiences alike. And amazingly, you can hear him play in a 200 seat hall: it’s as if he were playing in your living room. All performances are in Holsclaw Hall on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

Tucson, and nowhere is that more evident than in a recital by the opulent soprano Christine Goerke, a veteran of New York City Opera and other leading houses. For UApresents, she’ll sing art songs by Brahms, Wagner, Gluck and Poulenc, among others. The Poulenc pieces pick up a thread of French music running through this season’s festival. The most prominent Gallic work will be the Tucson Symphony’s concert performance of “The Damnation of Faust” by Berlioz, featuring Jennifer Johnson Cano, William Burden and Jordan Bisch. The festival also offers Duruflé’s gentle “Requiem” and works by Debussy and Ravel performed by the Tucson Chamber Artists and mezzo Kelley O’Connor; a recital by soprano Maria Jette and guitarist Rene Izquierdo, courtesy of the Tucson Guitar Society; and young artists from the prestigious Steans Music Institute singing for the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. As the festival finale, Ballet Tucson will present Ravel’s exotic “Daphnis et Chloe,” and a ballet based on arias from Bizet’s “Carmen.” More info: tucsondesertsongfestival.org

Professional Company, Apprentice Company, “Many Limbs” Youth Aerial Company and members of their Releasing into Performance Community Class. The word Solstice literally means “standing still sun.” The winter solstice is the shortest day of the year; it marks the turning from the cold, dark days of winter to the warmer, lighter days of spring and summer. Traditionally, this season was used as a time of reflection, renewal and community celebration. ZUZI! Co-founder and Artistic Director, Nanette Robinson, along with company members, have choreographed an evening influenced by images of the ocean and the element of water. These inspirations will make for a very special evening.

In this season of giving, ZUZI! offers a gift of the magic of movement, creative energy, and reflection. The 16th Annual Solstice Performance, “The Poetry of Water” (December 19, 20 and 21), also features a silent auction.
