‘The Immigrant’

‘Borgman’

‘The Sacrament’

Jan Bijvoet plays a vagrant who enters the lives of an arrogant upper-class family and turns their lives into a psychological nightmare in the process. (NR - 113 minutes)

AJ Bowen and Joe Swanberg play a news team that trails a man (Kentucker Audley) as he travels to an undisclosed location to find his missing sister (Amy Seimetz). Upon entering Eden Parish and meeting the community’s leader (Gene Jones), it becomes apparent to the newcomers that this paradise may not be as it seems. (R - 100 minutes)

Herb: What if David Lynch and Quentin Dupieux made a film together, and that film was a Twilight Zone/nightmare version of Down and Out in Beverly Hills meets Twin Peaks? That’s Borgman in a nutshell. A really odd, fascinating film that is not for everyone but so head-scratching strange I couldn’t stop watching. I’m still trying to figure it out, and that’s kind of cool.

Name Arthur Michael Brady Belinda Rodgers Brenda B Brianna Wilkins Catherina Garibay

Prize Out of Africa Fuego Bistro Enchanted Island Spokes on Southern Out of Africa

Joseph: “The Sacrament” is scary because - unlike the events that transpire in most horror movies these can actually occur. Star Gene Jones nails the role of a religious wacko so perfectly that you may have a hard time listening to your pastor’s next sermon without at least having to shake off a shiver of paranoia as it passes through your spine.

Name Holly Angelly Iris Speller Jamie Powell Kristin Ingram

Prize Big Surf Phillys Boulders on Broadway Skateland

Marion Cotillard plays an immigrant who falls prey to a charming but wicked man (Joaquin Phoenix) who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. The arrival of a dashing stage magician (Jeremy Renner) restores her self-belief and hopes for a brighter future while becoming her only chance to escape the nightmare in which she finds herself. (R - 120 minutes) Stan: Reminded of Martin Scorsese’s ‘Gangs of New York’ (2002) and its stark view of life in New York City in the late 1800s, ‘The Immigrant’ presents a view of those arriving in the USA in the 1920s at Ellis Island, New York City as immigrants looking for a better life. Many became victims of the unscrupulous, and, many where helped to achieve that dream by those who were true and just-ofheart. A very good visual history lesson indeed. Joseph: “The Immigrant” looks beautiful (though pales in comparison to last year’s “The Great Gatsby”) and its cast is incredible (boasting the likes of Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner) but its story is dull and depressing while its characters are wooden stereotypes that we have seen countless times before in better movies. Herb: Not since the Godfather Part 2 has New Your City of the 1920’s been captured so beautifully on film. This dark tale with a killer cast led by Joaquin Phoenix and Marion Cotillard is spot-on from start to finish. Director James Gray has a real winner that should be seen on the big screen. Be sure to watch it that way while you can.

Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard play radical environmentalists who look to execute the protest of their lives - the explosion of a hydroelectric dam. (R - 112 minutes) Randy: The trailer looked promising and I am a huge fan of Director Kelly Reichardt’s previous films. What promised to be an edge of your seat thriller ended up being a snooze fest, with the only real suspense being

when the closing credits would start to roll. There was a promising thriller buried in the script, but Reichardt when the artsy route. Herb: This is a real slow burn of a film, dark and moody from start to finish. I thought the character development and story arc were compelling and I thought that the casting was spot on with Sarsgaard, Fanning and Eisenberg really inhabiting their roles. If you see one drama about evil, conflicted ecoterrorists this year this is the one to see.

‘Night Moves’

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT top 10 Movies The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Kelly Reichardt (‘Night Moves’) By Randy Montgomery

“Aside from movies, books and newspaper stories, we also thought about who we knew in our own lives that might actually do a truly radical act or have those sorts of underlying qualities. “Nobody struck me as the obvious choices for these roles and instead the characters grew with time, which is how I like it. If I could picture the

“Sherlock Holmes” (2009): Downey redefines the image of the classic sleuth in this smartly paced adventure from director Guy Ritchie.

In ‘Night Moves’, Jesse Eisenberg, Dakota Fanning and Peter Sarsgaard play radical environmentalists who look to execute the protest of their lives - the explosion of a hydroelectric dam. (R - 112 minutes)

“The inspirations for the characters at first were far-reaching – anyone from Patty Heart and the Symbionese Liberation Army, members of the Weather Underground, the Black Panthers, Earth First, the Earth Liberation Front, and the would-be Portland Christmas tree bomber – to the fictional character of Raskolnikov in Crime and Punishment.”

“The Avengers” (2012): It certainly isn’t his film alone, but there’s no question Downey’s return as Iron Man is a major factor in the fun here.

“Iron Man” (2008): The first sequel was good, but the original is destined to stay one of Downey’s top projects. He truly soars with it. “Good Night, and Good Luck.” (2005): Working for director and co-star George Clooney as CBS News writer-producer Joseph Wershba, Downey demonstrates (in relatively little time) just how effective he can be dramatically.

“U.S. Marshals” (1998): This sequel to “The Fugitive” is by the numbers, but Downey has more to do than anticipated – and does it well – as a special agent working with the marshals. “Chaplin” (1992): Downey was rightfully Oscarnominated for handling the tough task of playing a silentscreen icon, in his private life and also in re-creations of classic scenes. film completely in the beginning, it wouldn’t be very interesting to me.

“Air America” (1990): Downey and Mel Gibson make an entertaining duo as renegade pilots for the CIA during the Vietnam War.

“Jesse (Eisenberg) is super analytical and he likes to know the how and why of everything. Dakota (Fanning) is still a mystery to me. She’s super self-reliant and very private in how she does things. She doesn’t rehearse, she just does her own thing and figures it out; she’ll take notes and somehow it all works.” – Kelly Reichardt

“True Believer” (1989): Portraying an earnest lawyer wannabe, Downey is well-matched against James Woods, who plays a courtroom maverick.

“Less Than Zero” (1987): Downey’s memorable role in this drama – as a privileged young addict – foreshadowed events in his own life. “The Pick-Up Artist” (1987): In filling the title spot, Downey adds a smart performance to what could have been just a standard story.

Please visit azhumanities.org for more information. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings at 7 a.m., bird enthusiasts will join a naturalist for a guided walk appropriate for beginning and advanced birders. Bring your own binoculars; only a limited number are available for loan from the park. Visitors will see many birds that make the park their home. The Hummingbird Patio is an excellent spot to start your tour. Another good viewing point is the visitor center roof. Most year-round birds are found in the riparian area next to Oak Creek or along the field behind the visitor center. The Audubon Society has designated Red Rock State Park as an Important Birding Area because of the many species who live or visit here. Daily at 9 a.m., a volunteer naturalist leads a guided nature walk and informs visitors about the different life zones of Red Rock State Park. The subjects discussed on the walk include: plants, wildlife, geology, history and archaeology. The walk is a learning experience allowing participants to take part in

question and answer sessions. Daily at 2 p.m., the park hosts a ranger/ naturalist led activity of approximately 45-minutes. Programs may include a nature-hike, a special presentation or an educational/nature video. This program may be an indoor or outdoor activity. Several covered ramadas and picnic tables are available to reserve throughout the park. The ramadas feature charcoal barbecue grills, picnic tables, electrical outlets, water and nearby restrooms. To inquire about reserving a Ramada for groups, call the park at (928) 282-6907. These areas are also available for daily visitors. Red Rock State Park is a “pack in-pack out” facility and does not provide trash receptacles. Please remember to “pack out” your trash with you to help us protect the environment and wildlife. A Junior Ranger program is available for children between the ages of six and 12. Junior Rangers pledge their part in helping preserve the beauty of the park for everyone! Junior Ranger booklets, available at the Visitor Center, have activities to complete. Once approved by a Ranger, the newest Junior Ranger at Red Rock State Park is sworn in after taking the pledge and receiving a Junior Ranger button. The Park Visitor Center features many displays about the area’s geology, archaeology, flora and fauna, including an interactive relief map of Sedona and computer programs about various park features, including the House of Apache Fires. The popular video, “The Natural Wonders of Sedona” narrated by local voice-over artist John Conway, is shown several times daily in the Park Theatre. The video features aerial explorations of Indian ruins and dramatic landscapes, colorful desert wildflowers and local wildlife. For more information about Red Ro k State Park call (928) 282-6907 or visit AZStateParks.com/parks/RERO. Red Rock State Park is located at 4050 Lower Red Rock Loop Road in Sedona, Ariz. Park hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the Visitor Center is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Park Entrance Fee is $5 per adult (14 and up), $3 per youth (7-13) and free for children (0-6). Summer is here and it is time to ‘Take a Stroll with Niccole’ in the higher elevations of this beautiful, mountainous landscape we live in. Summer months in Arizona make a great time to relax and explore the mountains that aren’t as inviting to us desert rats during the colder months. In the Pinetop-Lakeside and Show Low area alone there are over 40 lakes located within forty miles of each other. At 8,900 feet you will find a small 24 acre lake off of highway 260 about 22 miles outside of Pinetop area called A1 lake. It was named after an honorary Apache Chief Achesay, who was instrumental during the Indian wars and made great progress for Native American rights in the early 1900’s. The military personnel were unable to pronounce his name and dubbed him A1. A1 lake is not the biggest or the deepest lake in this diverse land, however, it is hands down some of the best fishing in the area and one of the most beautiful in the White Mountains. This lake is stocked full of rainbow,

brook and Apache trout year round and is actually quite popular for ice fishing once it freezes over. It is only a few miles away from Sunrise Park which offer lift rides on the weekends up to the top of the famous Mt. Baldy at 11,500 feet up. There is endless fishing, hiking, horseback riding, camping and rock climbing and other outdoor activities all around this area. You can find solitude and peace with primitive camping or make some friends at one of the campsites that offer full amenities such as showers and bathrooms. If you want to escape the valley’s heat, without spending too much time or money, head up to the peaceful White Mountains where the whole family will find something to love. The weather is perfect right now with warm days filled with outdoor sports and cool nights with smores and unbelievable star viewing. Keep in mind there are serious fire restrictions due to the recent drought so get a propane grill and lantern, and remember you are in bear country so

be bear aware to keep your campsite safe. What are you waiting for? Dig your sweaters out that you probably didn’t get a chance to use this year, fill up the gas tank and head north to enjoy the lakes of Arizona. Get out and take a trek this summer! For more information and virtual tours of Arizona outdoors please check out my Facebook page “Take a Stroll With Niccole” and for more information you can email

me at takeastrollwithniccole@ gmail.com or check out www. arizonaswhitemountains.net which is a fabulous guide to dining, lodging, and all outdoor attractions.

Spike searches for inspired new ‘FrankenFood’ creations Chef Josh Capon and “sandwich king” Tony Luke Jr. hit the road in search of the latest and most offbeat food crazes in “Frankenfood,” a comedy-and-cooking-competition combo platter that premieres Sunday, June 22, on Spike TV. Each of the 10 episodes finds Capon and Luke in a new town, along with a guest judge from a local eatery. One by one, amateur chefs file before the trio in a bid to prove that they have come up with the week’s best Frankenfood, which the show defines as “a mashup of original and unexpected food combinations, resulting in delicious dishes or awful misses.” In one episode, examples of the former include Gyro Bites, which combines the flavors and textures of a gyro wrap and an egg role. One notable miss is the Bratnana Split, a jalapeno bratwurst topped with cherry chocolate-chip bacon ice cream, beer & honey ice cream and orangemarmalade pickle ice cream. Contestants that receive good marks from at least two of the judges move on to the final round, where the two best dishes are selected, tweaked a little by the culinary experts, then served to customers at the restaurant. The winner receives $10,000 and a spot on that restaurant’s menu. “Is this show ‘Top Chef’? No, and it isn’t supposed to be,” Capon explains. “We don’t take the food too seriously. At some point (in development), this show turned into a food comedy/ variety show. The characters and the foods speak for themselves, and the banter between myself, my co-host Tony Luke Jr. and whatever guest judge we are having can sometimes be fun.”

The first season it was my idea to have moments with the kids and roll camera and let kids talk. I guarantee something funny or something adorable will happen. For the second season, we brought in more of those moments. They have no editor. They don’t care what you think of them and that is what is so fun. Seeing as they are not my children, I am all for it.
