CITY! COVER STORY

BROADWAY IN TUCSON

THE ONE AND ONLY ‘JERSEY BOYS’ HEADED THIS WAY! June 17th – 22nd at Centennial Hall One of Broadway’s biggest success stories takes you behind the music of the legendary Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons to follow the rags-to-rock-to-riches tale of four blue-collar kids who work their way from the streets of Newark, New Jersey to the dizzying heights of pop stardom. Although Valli and his cohorts Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi are famed for their legendary harmonies, things didn’t always go so smoothly among them off stage. This acclaimed, Tony Award-winning show spotlights the ground-breaking group’s hit songs “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Rag Doll,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” and more.

Jersey Boys has amassed throughout the years. JERSEY BOYS on Broadway has received the following awards: 4 Tony Awards® including Best Musical 2 Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical 2 Drama League Awards including Best Musical, and the Julia Hansen Award for

Excellence in Directing for Des McAnuff Original Cast Recording received a 2006 Grammy Award® for Best Musical Show Album. The album has remained in the Top Three of Billboard’s Broadway Albums Chart every week since it went on sale in 2005. The Cast Recording has been certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

To date, the show has been seen by over 13 Million People Worldwide (as of July 2011), and features 20 Four Seasons songs, including “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” and “Oh, What a Night.”

The 2006 Best Musical Tony® Award winning sensation opened to critical and popular acclaim at the August Wilson Theatre on Broadway on November 6, 2005 (previews began October 4, 2005). The show is written by Academy Award-winner Marshall Brickman & Rick Elice, with music by Bob Gaudio, lyrics by Bob Crewe, and is directed by two-time Tony® Award-winner Des McAnuff and choreographed by Sergio Trujillo. The award-winning Broadway show’s credentials are more than plenty, to say the very least. Here’s a quick peak at just a few of the endless milestone achievements

June 11th, 2014 - June 17th, 2014

• Actors are asked not to sing songs from the show, but many elect to sing other songs by The Four Seasons.

• Frankie runs through 1 pair of pants each week, with repairs every other day. (He slides on his knees in the number “Beggin’”)

The music • The Four Seasons sold 175 million records worldwide - all before they were thirty years old.

• 9 seconds - Fastest quick change in the show, for Mary Delgado to get out of the car and into her robe for “My Eyes Adored You”

• 33 songs in the show, including 5 #1 hits, and 11 songs that made Billboard’s top ten.

• 12 quick changes for Frankie Valli. His shortest quick change is 15 seconds.

• 19 hit songs by The Four Seasons or Frankie Valli didn’t make it into the show, and are listed in the playbill as “The Ones That Got Away” (including 4 top ten hits).

• 5 hours – time spent per week handbeading repairs to the “Snowflake” dresses. Originally beaded by machine (cost: $300 per yard).

• As the musical traces the origins of the group when they performed songs written by other groups, the songs in the show represent work by 34 songwriters, including Otis Blackwell, Dorothy Fields, Louis Prima and Judy Parker. Most of the hits of The Four Seasons were written by original member of The Four Seasons Bob Gaudio and their producer/lyricist, Bob Crewe.

• 102 shirts in the show, including reproductions of vintage shirts (patterns are printed on fabric by computer and then made into shirts. Cost: over $200 per yard) • 4 heels broken on stage (so far!) • 75 costumes/looks for the male swing • 37 costumes/looks for the female swing

The costumes • 196 total costumes/looks in the show, incl. some vintage suits, ties and dresses. • Tommy has 12 costume changes, Nick has 11, Frankie has 15 and Bob has 10.

• 87 shoes used in one performance • 1 gallon of detergent used per week for cleaning

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

• ½ gallon of spot cleaner used each week • 2.4 miles - Distance a dresser will walk/ run during a day, including day work, pre-show call, working the show and postshow work. The Sound • 65 microphones used in the show, both wireless and hard-wired. • The full sound system includes 120 speakers • 75,000 watts of amplification are used to power the sound system • 15 people spent 12 weeks hand build the sound console in England • Our wireless microphones broadcast into television channels that are not present in each city. In Chicago, we programmed our microphones around the local TV channels. We wouldn’t want “American Idol” accidentally coming out of the system when we turn Frankie’s microphone on! • In each city, we have technical rehearsals of the set, lights and sound system with the cast, crew and the band to prepare for performances in the theater, and to adjust the sound mix to adapt for acoustic needs of each theatre.

‘Lucky Them’

‘All Cheerleaders Die’

‘The Dance of Reality’

Caitlin Stasey plays a rebel girl who joins her high school cheerleading squad in an effort to take down the captain of the football team. However a supernatural turn of events thrusts the girls into a different battle. (R - 89 minutes)

Alejandro Jodorowsky blends his unhappy and alienated childhood as part of an uprooted family with metaphor, mythology and poetry, reflecting his philosophy that reality is not objective but rather a “dance” created by our own imaginations. (NR - 130 minutes)

Joseph: The first hour of “All Cheerleaders Die” is fairly fun. Unfortunately, the pyramid pretty much completely collapses during the final act, which essentially throws all caution to the wind and not only oversteps the fine line that separates satire and stupidity but outright ignores such a line even exists. Until then, though, the new comedic horror flick is an entertainingly dark take on the high school experience.

Name Arthur Michael Brady Belinda Rodgers Brenda B Brianna Wilkins Catherina Garibay

Prize Out of Africa Fuego Bistro Enchanted Island Spokes on Southern Out of Africa

Herb: Famed cult director Alejandro Jodorowsky’s return to the screen is not for everyone. Easily the strangest film you will see all year is both fascinating and disturbing as it tells an autobiographical story of the director’s childhood, sort of, or at least I hope not entirely literally. View at your own risk.

Name Holly Angelly Iris Speller Jamie Powell Kristin Ingram

Prize Big Surf Phillys Boulders on Broadway Skateland

Toni Collette plays a veteran rock journalist who teams up with an eccentric amateur documentary filmmaker (Thomas Haden Church) to discover what really happened to a long-lost rock god who also happens to be her ex-boyfriend. (R 97 minutes) Stan: Eerily drawn to stories/ themes that highlight eras from the past I have actually lived, I am appreciative that I don’t cling to what is modernly called ‘old school’ mindsets at 68 years old. ‘Lucky Them’ is a reminder that the past can sometimes get in the way of living life in the present as the central characters differences in motivations for the pursuit of finding answers in the past, can get in the way of closure. Joseph: “Lucky Them’s” themes about living in the past vs. letting said past lie is both contemplative and compelling. Unfortunately, the story itself never gathers enough steam to make the most of those themes as the search that is at the center of it all keeps getting placed on the back burner in favor of frivolous romantic (more like lustful) affairs. The conclusion’s cameo and emotional depth draws us back in but it is too little too late. Herb: A fairly solid entry into the new genre of narrative films about imaginary, struggling indie rockers and their life stories. Toni Collette and Thomas Hayden Church are a great pair in search of a dead/ missing musical legend. Funny, sweet and well done, this is a real sleeper that will get lost this summer, but is a good antidote to the loud, noisy and “dumbed down” films out every week this season.

It is about a family who basically found themselves in the chaos that ensued. [There were] some really bad decisions in government so you have got the Indians and Pioneers at odds. [Pioneers] were kidnapped by the Indians, taken away from their families as little girls, and they grew up in the Indian village. It is kind of

their story of faith, hope and survival. “I love just to be a part of good productions. But I also love to be a part of films that encourage people to think beyond themselves - and for themselves. So much of society is wrapped around, ‘Here is what we are telling you. Now you just go and do it - respond to whatever we are telling you.’ I really think that it is so important and critical for people to think for themselves. Why is it that you believe what you do? What is it that you think about something?

creates individual thinking - and also anything that creates values. There is so much lost in society and I think that any value-creating story is very important. And another thing is if you do not know history, then you are destined to make the same mistakes. I think that when you can learn from people’s inspiring stories and lives - especially true stories from history - then you can learn from them and not make the same mistakes in your own life.” - Kelly Greyson

Take a Stroll with Niccole: San Francisco Peaks in Flagstaff, AZ Summer 2014 Challenge: Hike Mt.Humphrey’s Trail (#151), 11 miles out and back If you would like to stand proud upon the tallest peak in Arizona, head to Flagstaff this summer where the air is cool and tinged with the smell of fresh pine. The Humphrey’s trail starts in Hart prairie (The bunny slope for you Snowbowlers), a gorgeous flower-filled meadow, where you can look down upon the rolling hills of Flagstaff’s staggering forests. You can enjoy the mountain vistas and watch the flora and fauna change as you climb from the shady canopy of the Ponderosa forest to the uncovered rocky switchbacks that take you to the final destination at the peak of Mt. Humphrey. After a great hike you find yourself at the peak staring into the vast wilderness from the ancient lava tubes to the Northern rim of the Grand Canyon. This is one tough hike, not because of the distance or elevation gain but because of the altitude which is from 7,000 -11,500 feet. If you are a

valley dweller it may be best to spend the night in Flagstaff the night before the trek to get yourself acclimated to a thinner atmosphere and higher environment. Although Flagstaff has remarkably comfortable weather in Arizona during the summer bring a windbreaker and 50 SPF sunscreen for this stroll because the sun can be brutal on the mountain which gets battered by the strong winds near the top. The best thing to do is keep your eyes on the weather forecast and head up early in the morning, if you see a monsoon swooping in, head for lower ground. Snowbowl is also operating their ski lift all summer long for those of you who aren’t able to make the hike. It is a beautiful 25 minute ride on their Agaziz chairlift and will allow you amazing opportunities to photograph and just take in the Arizona views. The Humphrey’s trek is one of the best in the state and summer is the perfect time to escape from the Tucson heat, so get out and take a Northern Arizona trek this season!

To check out pictures of this area and many other outdoor attractions around Arizona, check out my Facebook page “Take a Stroll with Niccole” and as always send questions or comments to me at takeastrollwithniccole@gmail. com. Happy trails!
