NO TIME TO WORK OUT?

oF ‘MuRdeR in tHe FiRst’ On TnT How have you found playing out one main story over the entire season on “Murder in the First”?

I think that it’s really fulfilling from an acting point of view. Taye (Diggs) and I and the other actors genuinely had no idea where it was going from week to week ... what was happening or where the characters were going, and it was intentional, and I was happy not to know. I loved discovering it as my character Hildy did. It’s so much more interesting and so much more fun to play with.

By Jay BoBBin

It’s like a big, giant movie. It has a very clear first act and second act and third act, then a satisfying result at the end where it’s like, “OK, I’ve invested all this time, and now I’m going to get my big payoff.” It’s great.

Perhaps the mistaken notion would be that dressing the same actress, albeit for different roles, is easy. After all, she is just one petite woman. But Tatiana Maslany who has played eight clones, some of whom have been killed off, sports very different looks for each character on BBC America’s “Orphan Black” which has its second season finale Saturday, June 21. “Working with one actress is not easier,” says Darci Cheyne, assistant costume designer. “She is on the floor acting. And getting research in, because she is always on the floor is a bit of a challenge; making one person look so different and we need to get everybody’s ideas (before) going into the stores and then seeing if this is what everybody wanted.” As Sarah Manning, the street-wise protagonist of the story, she dresses down.

‘Obvious Child’

‘The Grand Seduction’ Taylor Kitsch plays a big city doctor who lands in the lap of a small fishing village that must procure a physician in order to secure a lucrative business contract. Upon his arrival, the townsfolk rally together to charm him into staying. (PG-13 - 115 minutes) Joseph: “The Grand Seduction” is neither satirical enough nor cute enough and therefore falls right in the middle. And if you are not laughing out loud or feeling genuinely moved, then you are just bored while you watch these simple townsfolk try to woo a big city doctor who never exactly comes across as a real character and instead serves as little more than a plot device.

‘The Signal’ Brenton Thwaites plays one of three people who, on a road trip, are drawn to an isolated area by a computer genius. When everything suddenly goes dark, he regains consciousness - only to find himself in a waking nightmare. (PG-13 - 95 minutes) Stan: Admittedly, as ‘The Signal’ ended and closing credits started to roll, I sat in my seat stunned by the last revealing sequence of this psychologically disturbing, masterfully presented film by cowriter/director William Eubank. Not since ‘The Matrix’ has a film prompted my inner examination of what is reality versus my perceptions and my own actions/ reactions based on those concepts. Thought-provoking indeed. Herb: A solid mash-up of sci-fi and almost-horror films, The Signal was a hit when I saw it at Sundance a few months back. Everyone in the cast is top notch, including Lawrence Fishburne doing his best Matrix man-in-charge bit. I honestly didn’t see the end coming, and was pleasantly surprised by this genrebending film—a fun romp.

YELLOW! June 11th, 2014 - June 17th, 2014

Jenny Slate plays a stand-up comedian whose unplanned pregnancy forces her to confront the realities of independent womanhood for the first time. (R 83 minutes)

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Stan: Falling into a category I’ve called ‘slice of life’ films, ‘Obvious Child’ opens as we join the central character on stage at her usual late night standup comic ‘R rated’ gig at a dark and dingy lounge (aptly presented by Jenny Slate) and through those in her ‘orbit’ the pros & cons, views & miscues, and, the hope of finding that special someone to connect with to handle the idiosyncrasies of each other, works on multi levels. Joseph: “Obvious Child’s” grounding in reality is one of the new romantic comedy’s two most admirable traits - the other being its heartfelt approach in its reflection of relationships in modern times. Despite several scenes centered around stand-up comedy that are not even the least bit funny and a leading lady (Jenny Slate) that is inherently unlikeable, the flick is authentically charming. Herb: Beautifully bittersweet and genuinely funny, Jenny Slate’s film is like an R-rated, much better episode of Seinfeld. It’s a really modern romantic comedy from a woman’s perspective that men can relate to. Got that? If not, go see it anyway, its got laughs, a glimpse at real life and a great group of people in it.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre (‘Obvious Child’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“Donna is not me or Jenny [Slate]. Donna is somebody who I think is relatable. Her tone is honest. I think that we just had this urge and desire to make a story that was about a real woman doing real things about a choice that we had not really seen in movies. It had been on the peripheral and there are many ways that a woman can deal with unplanned pregnancy. This choice that we are showing in ‘Obvious Child’ is something that one in three women will have gone through in their lives. That is just a statistic that I have read. I am definitely not an expert. “It’s not every woman’s story. I just think that we are telling an authentic story for this character - for this one woman. I think that no matter who

is talking about it - whether they are [pro-life] or [pro-choice], whether they like the movie or do not like the movie - it is a good thing. I am OK with either side voicing their opinion. What is not OK is when somebody from the pro-life movement criticizes the movie without having seen it. That is a little annoying. But, either way, I am looking forward to a true conversation.

deal with big and small experiences in your life; tragic or not so tragic; from getting dumped to stubbing your toe to fighting with your parents - all of those things. It just feels like this character is a naturally funny person, so she is going to be herself no matter what we dealt her. And we throw a lot at her.” - Gillian Robespierre

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“I think that tragedy and comedy are very close together. When we sat down to write Donna’s tone, it was very similar to the tone that my friends and I have. We are kind of funny people. When big things happen in our lives, sometimes using comedy is not just a deflection. It is like actual medicine, helping you

Writer/Director Will Eubank (‘The Signal’) By Stan Robinson “I found the project with my friend David (Frigerio), we came up with the idea, and we actually worked backwards with the story concept, pulled my little Carlyle Eubank on board and we started writing it! We needed to reverse engineer ‘How to get there’, how to get to the big idea at the end of the film.

what happened, they wake up in some strange place, some type of government facility or something. When they are told that it is believed that they may, or may not have made contact with something, and the officials need their help in remembering what happened to them!

“To get it made we pitched it, then we wrote it, and we landed with a producer Brian Kavanaugh-Jones who really liked the script and quite literally said this is awesome, I like this, I can get this made one of two ways, either for not very much money and go right away [into production] for around 3 – 4 million dollars or so, or, I can find a proper amount of money of around 10-15 million but that could take a very long time. We decided to go ahead and get it done!

“I want my films to hopefully work on two levels, a high brow and a low brow. I like a lot of cliché stuff like the foreboding shot at the top of the stairs. It’s a ‘trope’ and I love that stuff - and it’s a lot fun in a film. That said, there are deeper parts like how powerful human emotion can be. Nic in the film is kind of like a computer, and trying to be that way because he’s scared of his emotional self. Even when logic says no, our emotional self can still say yes and empower us to do something really big. In the end he just goes for it. WORDS FROM THE WISE

Live with no excuses and love with no regrets.

I’ve learned that things change, people change, and it doesn’t mean you forget the past or try to cover it up. It simply means that you move on and treasure the memories. Letting go doesn’t mean giving up... it means accepting that some things weren’t meant to be.

RUGBY AND BEER The Phoenix area is going to host a couple of major rugby tournaments this year, so what better time to talk about beer and rugby then right now. First up is this week’s Sizzling 7’s tournament to

2014 sizzling 7’s invitational & Qualifier tournament

be held at the Tempe Sports Complex starting at 3:00 PM on Saturday. This tournament will also be part of the national 7s qualifier series. For those of you that don’t know, Rugby Sevens is a variant of the traditional Rugby Union which uses fifteen players per side. Sevens (using only seven players) is fast paced game designed to be played in about one fifth the time of a normal rugby match. If you are familiar with rugby already then this is quite a different game; if you are not familiar with rugby this game is an easy to understand version

of the game that does not require a major time investment to watch. Rugby players love the sport and play as much as possible. It is a grueling, physical game that requires players to have strength, speed and endurance. When the game is over, most rugby players retire to the local pub to enjoy a beer or five and celebrate the camaraderie of the sport. Frequently the losers are buying for the winners, and everybody enjoys several rounds of rugby songs. Rugby songs tend to be about drinking or the opposite sex Continued On Page 28...

...Continued from page 26 and frequently tend to be a little bit bawdy. As the evening progresses, and songs are sung several times over, they get louder and louder, and sometimes less understandable. Where the match is played frequently dictates what kind of beer is consumed. For example, if you are playing in Maggotfest, a rugby tournament held in Missoula Montana, you are probably drinking Big Sky beers after the match. Which is only fitting since Big Sky is the sponsor of the tournament. Something about Moose Drool after a hard fought rugby match that just hits the spot. Play a match in Ireland and chances are a nice lager or stout is your post match beer. What will spectators and players at the Sizzling 7’s be drinking? Well, the aforementioned Big Sky is a sponsor as is Ska Brewing out of Durango Colorado, so you can bet that spectators and players alike will have plenty of Trout Slayer, Pinstripe and Modus Hoperandi around. Afterwords there should be plenty of beer on tap in the local bars around the Sports Complex. Check out Beef O’Bradys at 6045 W. Chandler Avenue as they will be the host restaurant for the tournament and will have the Championship celebration party from 10:00 PM until 2:00 AM.

For those of you that enjoy the match and want more, or want to see traditional fifteen a side rugby, there will be another major tournament at Reach 11 off Cave Creek Road some time in December. To learn more about

Rugby, check out the rule comparisons elsewhere in this publication.

Basic Guide to Rugby Rules of Play: The game of rugby is played over 80 minutes, split into two 40 minute halves. Each team has 15 players who assume various positions, which play critical parts in the teams play. The ball can be moved by carrying it in the hands or kicking it any time during play, but under no circumstances can the ball be passed or made to go forward by the ball carrier other than by kicking the ball with the foot or shin. If the ball is hit or passed forward without it being kicked, it is called a “knock-on’ penalty and results in a scrum to the opposition. The aim of a team is to score as many points against your opponent whilst conceding none. Points are scored as

follows: Tries – A try is worth 5 points and is scored by a player touching the ball down in the opponent’s try area (between the try line and the dead ball line). Tries can also be awarded as penalties when an attacking player was illegally blocked by the defending team, or as a pushover try when an attacking pack push the scrum over the opposition’s try line. Conversions – A conversion is awarded when a try is scored and allows the attacking team to gain 2 more points by kicking the ball over the posts of the rugby goal. The conversion is usually take from the line in the field where the try was scored. Penalty – A penalty kick scores 3 points and is awarded if a serious foul has been committed. Drop Goal – a drop goal scores 3 points and is a kick at the goal during the course of play where the ball is kicked just after touching the ground. Players – there are two categories of players, forwards and backs, and within those categories there are fifteen different positions. Forwards MF_Fortune Awaits_10-25x11-5_03833-1 JC.indd 1

form the scrum and are the guys that are responsible for defending their territory and gaining control of the ball for their team. They can usually be identified from the cauliflower ears, flat noses and missing teeth. Backs are the players with the best speed. They will be the primary ball handlers and will score the vast majority of the tries. Variations with the Sevens version: Seven players instead of 15 – three forwards and four backs Two seven minute halves with a one minute halftime. There are no draws, tied matches continue to play five minute periods until there is a winner All conversions must be dropped kick rather than place kicked Scoring team kicks off rather than the team that was scored upon. Rugby is a great sport but one that is best learned by watching rather than reading. Get on out to the Sizzling 7’s tournament this weekend and check it out.

Gregory Smith stars in “Rookie Blue,” returning for its fifth season Thursday on ABC.

Sam’s in surgery, Andy’s in agony

It’s actually been nine months, but in the world of “Rookie Blue,” it’s only been a very short time since Detective Sam Swarek (Ben Bass) was shot.

ment with Andy,” adds Cameron. “It was important to us to spend that time, even if it meant the episode had a slightly different structure.”

His ex-flame, Officer Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym), watches him being wheeled into surgery as Season 5 of the Canadian-made ABC police drama opens Thursday, June 19. Dov Epstein (Gregory Smith) is at the hospital, too, hoping to see his girlfriend and fellow officer Chloe Price (Priscilla Faia) – as is her estranged husband, Wesley Cole (Cle Bennett) – as she recovers from also being severely wounded on the job. Andy and Dov head for a nearby diner to grab a quick bite. Within moments, though, they end up among the hostages of a couple bent on robbing the place ... and the new adventures of the cops of 15 Division are off and running.

Peregrym appreciates having that moment on camera, as well as Andy’s first encounter with latest beau Nick Collins (Peter Mooney) after he watched her run to Sam’s side. “To have a year off, then come back and put ourselves back where we were emotionally, was so strange,” the actress notes. “Every day, there was crying and heavy stuff, but I think it’s a really good first episode.”

“I’ve never tried before to pick up exactly where we left off,” co-creator and executive producer Tassie Cameron says. “We normally jump ahead three months or six months, so that we start in a bit of a fresh way and the audience has to play catch-up. This was more challenging because we’re picking up moments after the finale of Season 4 and trying to remind everybody where you’re at. And you’re starting in this very intense, emotional place. “We decided that if we were viewers of the show, if we skipped ahead even a week or a month, we’d be so frustrated not to have seen when Sam woke up and had his first mo-

36

The season premiere also introduces new characters: Inspector John Jarvis (Oliver Becker), a no-nonsense superior destined to shake things up at the precinct; and Sarah Swarek (Robin Brule), Sam’s long-estranged sister. The following week adds Duncan Moore (Matt Murray), a troubleprone rookie with the nickname “Selfie” who gets Andy as a training officer. As much attention as “Rookie Blue” gives the up-and-down “McSwarek” relationship of Andy and Sam, Cameron likes that Season 5 also showcases “characters that sometimes don’t get an ‘A’ story. We get to do special episodes where it’s all about Oliver (the officer played by Matt Gordon) or all about Nick. We’ve designed one around Oliver’s worst day, personally and professionally, and Matt is stellar in it.”

Gordon heeding lessons, thriving as Dodgers’ leadoff man

Dee Gordon

BY GEORGE DICKIE

NOW, WATCH TV ANY WAY YOU WANT.

IT’S TV JUST FOR ME.

For all his speed and flash, Dee Gordon is still learning. Still learning the position of second base, to which he was moved at the start of this season. Still learning to hit the ball on the ground to take advantage of his speed at the top of the Los Angeles Dodgers lineup. Still learning to steal bases. The lessons, given his production in the first two months of the season, appear to be well-learned. The 26year-old Florida native and son of former MLB reliever Tom “Flash” Gordon leads the majors with 30 steals in 33 attempts, 12 more than anyone else. Credit Dodgers coach Davey Lopes (who swiped 557 bases during his career) with his success in that department.

As a hitter, Gordon has progressed from averages of .234 and .228 in 2012 and 2013 to .283 so far in 2014, and his on-base percentages have likewise trended upward, from .280 to .314 to this season’s .332. A born listener, Gordon has embraced the advice of hitting coach Mark McGwire. In the field, the converted shortstop has made five errors in 128 changes (a .978 fielding percentage) and has exhibited great range and fearlessness in the pivot. Not bad for a guy who began playing the position less than a year ago. So imagine what he might do when he’s done learning. Gordon and the Dodgers face the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday, June 21, in a regional game airing on Fox.

Full name: Devaris Strange-Gordon Birthplace: Windermere, Fla. Birth date: April 22, 1988 Height/weight: 5 feet 11 inches/170 pounds Bats/throws: left/right Road to stardom: Played basketball as a preteen; didn’t take up baseball until high school ... played at Avon Park H.S., Seminole Community College and Southeastern University ... drafted in the fourth round by the Dodgers in 2008 ... hit .301 with 73

steals in ’09, earning Midwest League MVP honors Career highlights: Made Dodgers debut as a pinch runner June 6, 2011, and went 3 for 3 with a stolen base the next day ... hit first MLB home run May 1, 2012 ... on May 1, 2012 was part of a Dodgers lineup that featured five sons (with Tony Gwynn Jr., Ivan DeJesus Jr., Jerry Hairston Jr and Scott Van Slyke) of ex-MLB players Personal: Raised by father Tom after his mother, Devona Strange, was murdered by an ex-boyfriend

Giant 8:45 p.m. on TCM Edna Ferber’s tale of a Texas ranch family was James Dean’s last film. So it’s gone down in movie history as a Dean picture, even though his character — a troubled ranch hand who strikes it rich — isn’t the star. That distinction belongs to the ranch’s crusty owner (Rock Hudson) and his Eastern wife (Elizabeth Taylor), who spends years battling the ingrained racism and sexism of the local culture. Dennis Hopper also stars in the 1956 epic.

FRIDAY Great Performances 8 p.m. on 8 KAET Located in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, Tanglewood is one of the world’s most beloved music venues. The 2012 episode “Tanglewood 75th Anniversary Celebration” features the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops, Tanglewood Festival Chorus and Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra — led by conductors John Williams, Keith Lockhart and Andris Nelsons — along with artists Emanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Peter Serkin and James Taylor.

Puss in Boots 1 p.m. on FX

as Eleanor Roosevelt. Hume Cronyn and Jean Hagen co-star.

Featured earlier in the “Shrek” fractured fairy tales, the title character landed his own movie with this animated 2011 comedy-adventure. Still voiced by Antonio Banderas, Puss has serious rivals in Jack and Jill (voices of Billy Bob Thornton and Amy Sedaris) for magic beans that can lead their holder to a fortune. Humpty Dumpty (voice of Zach Galifianakis) also plays a big role in the proceedings. Salma Hayek is heard as Puss’ ally Kitty Softpaws.

SUNDAY

Sunrise at Campobello 10:30 a.m. on TCM Remembered principally as a character actor, Ralph Bellamy did fine leadingman work as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in this 1960 screen version of writer Dore Schary’s stage hit. The drama primarily focuses on FDR’s struggle against polio and how he refused to let the disease negate his political aspirations. Greer Garson is equally solid

Shrek Forever After 7 a.m. on FX Things get even twistier than usual during the fourth entry in the animated fairy-tale franchise, as a frustrated Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) strikes a bargain with Rumpelstiltskin that will allow the big green family guy to enjoy a day as a properly terrifying ogre. Unfortunately, Shrek doesn’t realize the “fine print” in this deal will have devastating repercussions for himself, Fiona (voice of Cameron Diaz) and the entire kingdom of Far Far Away.

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids 9:30 a.m. on FAM This delightful 1989 family comedy stars Rick Moranis as an absent-minded inventor whose shrinking ray accidentally reduces his kids and two neighbor boys to a quarter-inch tall. They wind up in the

backyard and must rely on their courage and wits to survive such gargantuan horrors as an ant, a bumblebee (kids prone to bug nightmares may want to skip this) and a lawn mower. Matt Frewer and Marcia Strassman co-star.

Finding Nemo 8 p.m. on DISN An Academy Award for best animated feature went to this dazzling 2003 boxoffice blockbuster from Pixar. A neurotic clownfish named Marlin (voice of Albert Brooks) teams up with a cheerful but scatterbrained blue tang fish named Dory (voice of Ellen DeGeneres in a comic tourde-force) to search for his son (voice of Alexander Gould), who has been captured by a diver. Other voices include Geoffrey Rush, Allison Janney and Willem Dafoe.

MONDAY Chitty Chitty Bang Bang 2:30 p.m. on TCM Best-known for his James Bond novels, Ian Fleming also wrote a children’s story brought to the screen by Bond-movie producer Albert R. Broccoli in this 1968 musical-fantasy. Dick Van Dyke stars as an inventor whose flying car takes him and his children (Heather Ripley, Adrian Hall) to the land of an evil baron (Gert Frobe, “Goldfinger”). Sally Ann Howes plays the aptly named Truly Scrumptious; Benny Hill co-stars.

TUESDAY Camelot 1:45 p.m. on TCM

You may have seen a housefly, but have you ever seen an elephant fly? A delight for all ages, this 1941 animated Disney movie tells the tale of Dumbo, a baby elephant taken from his mother’s side because of his extraordinarily large ears. He finds a friend in a talkative mouse, who teaches Dumbo to use his ears as wings and find success as a circus clown. The original score won an Academy Award, and the heart-wrenching song “Baby Mine” also was nominated.

“Finding Nemo” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The 1967 film adaptation of Lerner & Loewe’s musical suffers from the lack of the Broadway version’s big three stars: Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet. But with its timeless story, great songs, and Oscar-winning sets, costumes and scoring, it’s still a treat. Richard Harris stars as King Arthur and Vanessa Redgrave plays his queen, Guenevere, who breaks his heart by falling in love with knight Lancelot (Franco Nero).

Woodstock…the imagination roars when you hear the iconic word. Woodstock 69’ was in a time of revolution, rebellion, and free spirits. On Memorial Day Weekend, 2014, those exact same grounds welcomed Mysteryland. Brought to the USA by ID&T/SFX, this 21+ EDM (Electronic Dance Music) festival is the first festival in 45 years to be hosted at Woodstock. Nearly 20,000 attendees from 27 countries arrived, 7,500 camped, and all of them embraced the longest running dance festival in the world. When you walked in, it was as if you had transported to the inside of a story book. Attention to detail from the ground up was incredible. The theatrics, performers, installation art, were all brought to life through the designs, setting, and the people embracing it. The stages were unlike anything you have ever seen. The main stage looked like it was built by a deck

of giant cards and some mini stages replicated a boat and other incredible designs. Alongside the festival scenery, you could walk to any stage and dive right into whatever music that was playing. I remember just looking around at some point and thinking to myself, “Wow, this is phenomenal.” And it was. The enthusiasm, energy, and statute of the show were surreal. Kaskade concluded Mysteryland which was followed by a 10 minute (seemed like 10) choreographed epic firework show to bass thumping beats. A big appreciation and thank you to all of the crew members and staff that made the inaugural show a success. Be sure to not miss out in 2015. This is a must attend event if you love music and a one of a kind festival experience. “Yesterday is history. Today is a gift. Tomorrow is a mystery.” -Tavit & Lydia
