Biology is a popular A level subject, whether combined with other sciences and Mathematics or Geography. Biology is a preferred subject for medical, veterinary and pharmaceutical careers. It is obviously necessary for continued university studies in Biological Sciences, Agriculture, Ecology, Psychology and all related disciplines.

Module 4

Biodiversity, evolution and disease • Communicable diseases, disease prevention and the immune system • Biodiversity • Classification and evolution

Module 5

Communication, homeostasis and energy • Excretion as an example of homeostatic control • Neural communication • Hormonal communication • Plant and animal responses • Photosynthesis • Respiration

Module 6

Genetics, evolution and ecosystems • Cellular control • Patterns of inheritance • Manipulating genomes • Cloning and biotechnology • Ecosystems • Populations and sustainability Assessment consists of three examination papers (Biological processes, Biological diversity and Unified Biology) totalling six hours.

Entry requirements

A GCSE grade 7 in Biology or in Science and Additional Science is the minimum required to apply for Biology A level
