PASSIVE FIRE WORKS PROGRAMME
Our Warrington branch holds a £1 million per annum contract with the NHS Liverpool University Hospitals Foundation Trust to carry out passive fire safety works across four hospitals.
Fire door replacements and remedial works, as well as penetration sealing, were completed at both Aintree and Broadgreen Hospitals. These essential upgrades are designed to prevent the spread of fire and smoke in the event of an incident—potentially saving both lives and property. A total of 15,000 actions were undertaken across the two hospitals.
CLC has supported the client in meeting building compliance and regulatory requirements to help ensure the safety of staff, patients, and visitors.
CLC has carried out fire compartmentation projects in various buildings across a number of our hospital sites. The fire stopping work has always been completed to the highest standards. Works have been delivered in a timely manner and within the project budget. By working with our Hospital Bolster System, CLC consistently keeps project managers updated on progress, which greatly assists in the planning and coordination of the work.
The main operational challenge when working in a live hospital environment is operating safely and efficiently around service staff and patients, particularly in high-risk areas such as operating theatres and end-of-life care wards.

We carefully sequenced our work and operated out of hours where necessary to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors, while minimising disruption. Communication is crucial in a live hospital setting, so our teams liaised closely with the Trust, estates teams, staff representatives, and managers to ensure our work did not impact the hospital’s service delivery. We always use industry-leading products when delivering our fire safety projects. For example, we use ROCKWOOL systems to ensure the highest standards of installation, whether it’s batt, mastic, high-expansion sealants, or pipe wraps. This commitment to quality ensures long-term protection and regulatory compliance.
Due to the live nature of this project, clear and regular communication with all stakeholders was essential. The branch worked closely not only with the Estates and Trust teams but also with on-site managers and staff to ensure that works progressed smoothly without disrupting hospital services.
We have worked with the NHS Trust for several years, developing a strong and trusted relationship. Past projects have included building and ward refurbishments, alteration schemes, and now passive fire stopping, such as the work completed at Aintree and Broadgreen Hospitals.
The Project Manager shared the following about our ongoing partnership: “We can see the quality of the work that’s being carried out
and the detail that’s being used and their level of finish that’s been presented through the fire stopping work that’s been carried out.
CLC has always been able to help us delivery these projects within the cpaital allocations for the projects.
We have a very good working relationship with CLC that’s been built over the years, and we’re more than happy to bring them back and have them helping out on the various projects going on across the estate.”
